I can't hear sound on my computer. Using the sound setting under the volume control I can see the sound card install. I can also test the speakers and they work fine. However, if I try playing a youtube video or playing an mp3 file in vlc player I don't hear anything. I do occasionally here the ubuntu sound when I log in. [11:29] 안녕하세요 === bladernr_afk is now known as bladernr_ [15:02] hi people [15:02] i need help with something [15:03] remember the LOAD_CYCLE_COUNT thing in the harddrives? [15:07] anyway [15:07] does somebody knows how to disable hard drive power management in a laptop? [15:07] even when it is running on battery? [15:08] because all tutorials i can find, are for intrepid and hardy versions [15:09] and settings are not there anymore... [15:09] the power scripts and stuff [15:10] asterismo: likely been moved [15:11] probably something you can just add back.. whats the issue though? [15:11] battery life? [15:11] no [15:11] running an earlier kernel will likely be more benifical to battery life [15:11] hard drive life span is not something i would worry about [15:11] the hard drives parks every 6 seconds when running on battery power [15:13] holstein > given the fact that hard drives just can handle like 600,000 head parks... unce every 6 seconds... you do the math [15:13] i do not care about battery [15:13] the hard drive is the problem [15:14] asterismo: doesnt matter what math i do... i dont worry about it [15:14] i can put a line in the init.d startup to turn hdparm to 255 [15:14] but, you can likely put those files in place and get what you need [15:14] but every time my wifes unplugg the netbook for using with battery [15:14] the hdparm changes to other value other than 255 [15:15] and it starts clicking again [15:15] every 6 seconds [15:15] clicking usually means failure [15:16] holstein > you should unless you have a nice computer that is not affected by this bug [15:16] the netbook has less than a year [15:16] and the hard drive did once [15:16] the warranty replaced for a new one [15:16] asterismo: i have several with years on them [15:16] no issues yet [15:17] clicking can mean parking heads for power saving [15:17] im not saying you shouldnt worry, or that you cant change those settings... im just saying, i dont worry [15:17] you only hear the click in very silence moment [15:17] when i hear clicking, that has meant failure [15:17] its a certain type of clicking [15:17] anyways.. testing the hard drive wont hurt [15:18] and changing those values and testing wont hurt either [15:18] i need to edit this in oneiric [15:19] i need to find the script that tells the PC to change it's hdparm setting [15:19] bbl.. [15:39] asterismo, just add your desired hdparm to rc.local [15:49] i already tried that [15:49] but when i unplugg the setting is overrided [15:50] now i tried installing laptop-mode-tools [15:50] and edited that script [15:50] Hello [15:52] anyone around? [15:53] wasup MartinLeb [15:54] ahh hey man, so im trying to install ubuntu and failing at the first hurdle hehe [15:54] what's the problem? [15:55] im trying to install 11.10 alongside windows XP on my netbook (eeePC 1000HE) [15:55] yep, and what's the problem you are having? [15:56] ive booted it onto a USB key like the website said, and when i boot ubuntu onto that, i go to install it and rather having the option than saying "install alongside windows" like it does on the website, the installation menu says "install inside windows xp" [15:57] I wouldnt recommend installing inside Windows [15:57] no other options? [15:57] I did that and couldn't hibernate [15:57] when you choose that, it restarts into XP, and runs the installation dialogue, and then when you click the option for the full instalation alonside windows, it just boots up your USB key [15:58] so you end up running full circle haha [15:58] the other options are to delete windows and install ubuntu instead, which i dont wanna do, or use install inside windows [15:59] and not be able to hibernate like wilsonbradley says [15:59] Does it give you the something else option [16:00] You should defrag XP then shrink the xp partition, then install Ubuntu in the free space, having backed up all your data first [16:00] ohh right [16:00] yeh i do have the something else option [16:01] so partition my c drive and install it into that? [16:01] yep [16:01] but dfrag first and definitly backup ..... just incase [16:02] only thing is, i didnt set up windows on this machine, it came out of the box, and there is a strange D drive partition which i have no idea what it does, think that will matter? [16:02] That is probably a recovery partition [16:03] yeh..i was wondering that, when i open it it just has a folder called "test report" but the thing is about 60 gigs [16:03] Yes, I like backin time.. Will that restore back before a system update? [16:03] * nothingspecial has no idea [16:04] is that a windows program [16:04] ? [16:04] haha no its a folder, with a pdf file inside that has some stuff that looks like coding [16:05] LOL [16:05] oh and a couple of hidden folders too it seems [16:07] Hey, anyone here have some knowledge of kdenlive/video encoding in Ubuntu? I'm having some issues encoding, the red colour is not rendering [16:07] Kdenlive Version 0.8.3 Using KDE Development Platform 4.7.4 (4.7.4) [16:07] Well like I said, resi [16:07] oops [16:07] Yes, I like backin time.. Will that restore back before a system update? [16:08] MartinLeb, like I said, shrink your c drive and make a new partition for ubuntu, then install it on that with the something else option [16:08] ok cool [16:08] im running a defrag now [16:09] and the d drive thing wont be an issue? [16:09] hang on, long reply coming up [16:09] haha ok [16:11] You want to make 2 partitions, One twice the size of your Ram and one of at least 12-15 gigs for Ubuntu. When you get to the something else bit, chhose the partition that you made for ubuntu. Give it a mountpoint of / use it as an ext4 journaling file system. Use the small one as a swap area [16:11] it will make sense when you get to that bit [16:12] Just make sure you don't select any options for your c and d drive [16:12] and it will be fine [16:13] ok i think i follow [16:13] got to go MartinLeb, hope you get it sorted [16:13] ok i will give it a go, thanks a lot for your time [16:15] Can anyone help with this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11767744#post11767744 [16:16] lukjad: whats the issue? i would try going one way or the other with kden (version wise).. i would try using something else to isolate if it is a kden issue, or a system wide backend issue [16:17] holstein I can play videos just fine. [16:17] And the preview I see shows the video perfectly [16:18] i would still try using another application to encode or export or whatever you are doing to help get an idea where the issue is [16:19] holstein Hmmm...I don't have any. Let me see what other programs are out there. [16:20] openshot... avidmeux... kino [16:20] I love OpenShot [16:20] assuming you are having an export to a certain file type issue... try exporting to another filetype [16:20] installed and used it yesterday [16:20] Worked easier than Photoshop CS [16:20] WilsonBradley: seems like its the one being actively developed right now too [16:21] kden is the one i was using though [16:21] luv it [16:21] holstein I tried two different formats [16:21] lukjad: 2?... lets talk after you try 10 ;) [16:21] even on my Netbook it runs faster than others [16:21] but you can skip to trying openshot... that'll tell you something lukjad [16:22] holstein I don't have access to all 10, they aren't supported formats [16:22] different quality settings per though [16:22] anyways... i think tryint openshot will tell you something in a troubleshooting sense [16:27] holstein No colour issues [16:30] lukjad: you might want to think about elaborating on what the issues actually are... maybe someone will have seen them [16:31] holstein Well, the issue is that the colour of the video has all the colours except for the colour red [16:31] Preview shows no problems then [16:31] though [16:31] yeah, that sounds like it could be on the backend [16:32] easy to confirm that though... [16:32] Should I just remove the .kdenlive folder? [16:32] lukjad: i would literally open something up in openshot, and try exporting [16:33] holstein That's what I did [16:33] you can try removing that from your /home though, or make a temorary user acccount and open the project [16:33] lukjad: and? [16:33] still no red from openshot? [16:33] No, the red works fine [16:33] There were no colour issues when using Openshot [16:33] OK.. thats progress [16:33] then, yeah.. try renaming the config [16:34] try going forward or back with the versions [16:34] stop using ubuntu tweak ;) [16:37] holstein Well, that didn't work [16:37] The renaming === bladernr_ is now known as bladernr_afk [16:38] lukjad: ok.. so its not your config then [16:38] I'll try renaming all my .kde folder [16:38] or at least, thats the way i interpret that troubleshooting step [16:38] Maybe it's something within kde [16:38] now you can switch versions [16:38] lukjad: i would try going to an earlier version [16:38] the last kdenlive [16:40] How exactly do you do so? [16:40] lukjad: i would do that in synaptic myself... but you can do that where ever you feel comfortable managing packages [16:42] Hm, somehow I got .4, a new version [16:42] But it's not in the repos... [16:42] lukjad: you might have a PPA [16:42] you might have built it.. who knows.. i would try *several* versions... i would go for the last one in the default repos [16:43] like i said before... lets talk when you've tried like 4 versions ;) [16:56] I have to restart x manually after changing from unity to gnome3 using these instructions http://pastebin.com/Ec6Pc7an how do I make it so x starts by itself? [16:56] im using 11.04 [16:57] edlik: you should be able to have gnome3 and unity running in 11.10 [16:57] in 11.04 too for that matter... you should be able to select between them at login [16:59] I log in without going through my log in screen, so I wrecked my system for nothing? :'( [17:00] holstein, iirc the 11.04 gnome3 ppa was not compatible with unity [17:00] maybe thats the issue [17:01] still, i say the latest versions of unity are worth upgrading for [17:02] edlik, i cant remember what version the switch was, but i think it was 11.04. but the 11.04 gnome3 ppa is incompatible with unity and there were some stern warnings about this that you must have blown through. your best bet is probably a fresh install of 11.10 [17:02] i would probably, instead of hacking that version so hard, i would just upgrade to 11.10 or 12.04 [17:02] edlik, alternately you could remove the ppa with ppa-purge at which point you will probably only be able to boot to text and then try a text mode upgrade [17:06] is 12.04 stable now that it close to the release? [17:08] edlik, its still beta but you can hop into the !precise channel. you can get a decent idea by listening to traffic for a while [17:09] that sounds like a plan, thanks [17:15] should I do the ppa-purge before I upgrade to 11.10 or will the upgrade take care of that? [17:16] edlik: i would want to purge personally, and escott_ suggests that as well [17:16] edlik, you would have to do it before. honestly a reinstall is probably a better idea [17:16] yeah... i find reinstallling takes so much less time actually [17:16] Edlik.. I thought 12.04 was / is very stable.. but just now after updating/reboot it hangs at Speech dispatcher [17:17] edlik, that is a really intrusive ppa. its not like a single application that you can easily test for proper functioning after removal [17:17] not sure whats going on.. looking at log file now ;-( Not even sure where to start.. :-( [17:18] WilsonBradley: are you in #ubuntu+1 ? [17:18] thats the best place to "keep a finger on the pulse" [17:18] yes === bladernr_afk is now known as bladernr_ [17:30] before I do this do I just type in ppa-purge? And before I started x manually, I tried to upgrade to 11.10 from the command line but it said my system was upgraded.
