=== Joe_CoT is now known as Josephine_CoT === Josephine_CoT is now known as Joe_RPG [00:38] I know most of you guys in here are IT gurus and i just program so i have a question for you all, im almost 17 i cant get a job no one is hiring i want to ask for the money to build or for a server (a tower not rack) And i was thinking of going with a customized lenovo think server with a intel xenon 2gb am 500gb HD and noOS which starts me around 550$... is there any cheaper solution? or cheaper barebones/custom bu [00:38] ilt you can reccomend that would have that power yet still be under or near the price [00:46] This barebones kit is $399 and should blow the doors off of the ThinkServer: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1622532&CatId=5294 [00:48] hive would take 500 for a dell poweredge 2950, i think it's at 4gigs of ram [00:51] jedijf i looked into dell servers i dont like dell too much and it was kinda like expensive compared to the lenovo solutions i found [00:52] patbarron i was looking into the barebones on tiger [00:52] Looks like you have to add case fans, though. Shouldn't be too expensive. [00:52] if i want to run this machine as a dedicated server does it matter if its a desktop or a server machine or is that just in the name? [00:53] Just a name, really. [00:53] okay [00:53] patbarron this is probably more expensive but these dont look to bad so far https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=23597587 [00:55] Can't see it (don't have an account at newegg)... Direct URL to the product? [00:58] patbarron this is all thats in the wishlist so far http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.815265 [01:01] Sadin: looks nice, but more pieces you need to supply yourself (CPU, hard drive, memory). I'm shopping for something like what you're looking for, myself to do some "server consolidation" at home. Planning to run a bunch of KVM guests, to rid myself of several single-purpose systems. So I've been shopping TigerDirect and such too. :-) [01:02] Looking more towards AMD-based systems, though. Not such a big fan of Intel. (Nothing wrong with Intel, just I think too expensive for what you get...) [01:02] patbarron yes i know i have an 80Gb SATA HD lying around and also a powersupply [01:03] just picked a combo of 2 2gb RAM sticks [01:03] Cool :) === Joe_RPG is now known as Joe_Ghost [01:06] https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=23597587 patbarron can you see now? [01:07] No, wants me to sign in (with account that I don't have...) before it will let me view a wish list... [01:08] wth? [01:08] Not sure why. [01:08] Since the URL says "MySavedWishDetail", I wonder if you are the only one that is allowed to view yuor wish lists... [01:09] (At least via that URL, anyway) [01:13] patbarron there are no sharing options other then linking urls and this barebones suits my needs a lil better :) [01:13] http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1922480&CatId=5294 [01:13] can always add more RAM later [01:15] That was one of the ones I was considering buying recently. :-) [01:16] Only reason I didn't is that I was hoping for a 1 TB hard drive. [01:16] But I like the ASUS motherboard, and the AMD Phenom II X6 processor. [01:18] Meh 500gb is enough for NodeJS/Ruby/RubyOnRails/PHP repositories [01:19] Yeah, I would agree. I only want a mess of disk space because I'm going to be running a bunch of virtual machines. [01:20] patbarron prolly running #! linux on it for a workstation since its built of one of the most stable OSes for Servers Debian [01:22] or Debian with no GUI or CentOS [01:23] I was just going to ask why not just run Debian. :-) (I don't know much about #!, so just curious...). CentOS is a good choice too. [01:26] patbarron cause i just dont like debian and love the #! community as well [01:26] :) [01:26] i mea i like dedian just not all the extra junk on it debian6 minimal 64bit is running on my VPS [01:27] There's something to be said for that. ;-) I have some servers at work that I run minimal Debian on, and I have no complaints. [01:29] I spent much of the afternoon today fighting with Arch Linux (because someone's interested in it for a Linux installfest I'm helping to run this week). Yuck. Not recommended (by me, anyway... ;-) ). [01:29] patbarron arch was really fun [01:30] i used to only use arch but i wanted to keep my gaming computer and i wanted to sell my windows laptop for $$$ to buy an intuos 4 drawing/design tablet [01:30] Made me really appreciate how easy Debian and Fedora have gotten... Arch seemed to have too many things you have to tweak by hand. (And Xorg is completely broken when running it under VMware right now - it's a bug, they know about it, just not fixed yet...) [01:30] i have a macbook i know can run debian/#! its just im not to sure about being okay with a one button track pad.... [01:31] patbarron yes im on the fedora design team and it did that for me too [01:31] patbarron #! is like a complete openbox enviornment for Debian that works out of the box that is meant for cutomization LIKE arch but works right away and gives you stuff to work with [01:32] I'll have to check into it, sounds like it could be fun... [01:33] yeah it is great community too [01:33] they accept all distros [01:33] distro users* === Joe_Ghost is now known as Joe_CoT [02:54] Sadin: did you see the server for sale by Mr. Bacon (Samurialbi or however spelled) I think $350 dual Xeons, 8 core, yadda yadda. [19:31] People say that every year [19:33] desktops are so 00s [19:34] Maybe we should revise that to "this is the year of the data center in your bedroom" [19:34] Thats what I am planning InHisName1 [19:35] Goona stick with 12Download meg bits and 2 upload meg bits ?
