phaidrosI am just wondering why a usb midi keyboard doesnt show up in the jack midi pane .. any ideas?20:29
phaidrosk, found the answer in the forums20:48
phaidrosnow, being in qsynth and having midi keyboard conencted to it, I cant switch channels, so all I can play is the piano20:48
phaidrosI have the channels button ,where I see lots of instruments, but how do I actually select one?20:48
phaidrosholstein: any hint?20:58
holsteinphaidros: hey21:06
holsteinqsynth is just a front end21:06
holsteinit depends on what you have loaded21:06
holsteinif you are tyring to open an instrument, and get different sounds, i say start with yoshimi21:06
holsteinor zynaddsufx (bascially yoshimi is the newer version of zyn)21:07
phaidrosah, greeat thanx!21:27
phaidrosholstein: but yoshimi seems not to be able to load sf2 files. what use do the sf2 banks have in qsynth basically?21:32
holsteinphaidros: yoshimi/zyn is *not* a soundfont player22:49
holsteinit'll just do the sounds it does22:49
holsteinfeel free and ask in #opensourcemusicians about more MIDI sounds and synths22:49
phaidrosholstein: yeah, good suggestion thanx!22:49
pondheh... I have centos 6.2 and installed Cinelerra (maxes out cpus), PiTiVi (won't start), LiVES (seems to work, but... evidently does not), and am installing OpenShot just for the heck of it... but my hopes aren't too high. lol... can anyone point me to a user review or blog on editing video on UbuntuStudio?22:50
pond... I am thinking of changing distros...22:50
holsteinphaidros: its the same software everywhere22:50
holsteinlikely the same versions22:50
holsteini wouldnt choose a distro to get a video editor22:51
holsteini would choose a base that works for you, that you like22:51
holsteinubuntustudio has a lot of these packages conviniently located on one place22:51
holsteinand the 12.04 disc is live.. however, more geared for audio id say22:51
holsteinnot so say you need ubuntustudio to do video22:52
pondI see... well, is there something you would suggest for video?22:52
holsteinyou just install openshot, cinelerra, avidmeux, kden.. whatever you like.. and go for it22:52
holsteinpond: openshot is a good one22:52
pondhehe... yeah I did...22:52
holsteinmaybe something in your config is borked22:52
pond...evidently22:52
pondI am thinking that it is Centos...22:53
holsteinsometimes i suggest firing up another user accoung if only for troubleshooting purposes22:53
holsteinaccount*22:53
pondI use centos all the time for serving web sites... but... thought maybe it was just the wrong solution for video22:53
holsteinif you use it, and understand it, and like it.. i say use it22:53
holsteinmaybe fedora would be a nice compromise22:54
holsteinubuntustudio or ubuntu are both quite capable, and i tend to stick with it fo the community and support22:54
pondI mean... I tried four vbideo editors so far... and I am good at doing installs (building rpms, source installs... I'm a good sysadmin)22:54
holsteinlol22:54
holsteinget back to me when you've tried 10+ :)22:54
pondyeah... I'm crying22:54
holsteinand typically, i find i need tools from several22:54
holsteinthey are quite capable though22:55
holsteinopenshot is likely the newest, best supported22:55
holsteini liked kdenlive personally22:55
pondwell.. i am installing that right now...22:55
pondknock on wook22:55
pondwood22:55
holsteineh... no need for wood22:55
pondhave not tried kdenliven yet... seemed too simplistic22:55
holsteinjust install it.. if hte distro is not allowing you to get your work done, you might want to consider moving on22:56
pondanyway... thanks... I'll try a couple more22:56
holsteinsure pond, anytime! :)22:56
pondyeah... I have never used linux on a desktop before... but want to make the switch... so...22:56
holsteinubuntu is a nice choice because thats what the goal is (or at least has been for years)22:57
holsteinubuntu is desktop linux, with a great community22:57
holsteinif it works for you, it works for you though22:57
holsteinim not trying to say one is better...22:57
holsteinthere are a few facts though22:57
holsteinthe community is large, and active22:58
pondwell... I'll try this ubuntustudio and see what happens...22:58
pondwish me luch22:58
holsteinand its made for desktop use22:58
pondluck22:58
holsteingood luck!22:58
pondsweet22:58
pondtnx22:58
phaidrosholstein: is it planned to get the non tools (non.tuxfamily.org) soon into ubuntustudio?23:49
holsteinphaidros: should be in the default ubuntu repos23:53
holsteinwas last time i looked i thought23:53
phaidrosorly?23:53
phaidroshm, my aptitude search doesnt find anything related to non23:56
holsteinphaidros: they build easy23:56
holsteinthe easiest way to get them in is upstream debian23:56
holsteini thought they were... if not, theres likely a good reason23:56
holsteinseveral folks in #opensourcemusicians were using non23:57
holsteini remember trying it23:57
holsteintheres nothing about ubuntustudio that *wont* support non-stuff23:57
holsteini think it was the KXstudio ppa's23:58
holsteinhttps://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-team/+archive/ppa/+build/2093216 for example23:58
holsteini probably just apt-get installed it from that ppa23:58
