snadgei get a desktop with icons on it08:00
snadgebut no launcher or panel.. and i cant click on anything08:00
snadgeso im drinking moonshine to cope with the pain08:00
snadgenaw not really im using unity2d ;)08:01
MCR1Hi. Since the last Compiz update I am experiencing mad flickering all the time on my Intel GMA HD4500. Is there a workaround for this already ?09:49
MCR1I tried disabling all additional plugins - no effect.09:49
MCR1I tried changing workaround options, turning all of them on and off - no effect.09:50
MCR1I purged xorg edgers PPA (although I am on Intel and it never made problems) - no effect.09:50
MCR1Unity 5.8 now starts again here at least, but with that flickering it is impossible to do anything productive or passive (I could listen to music without problems though :P)09:53
MCR1it looks like every redraw anywhere on screen causes Compiz to clear and redraw the whole screen, so if I close everything the flickering will be triggered each second, because of the clock which updates :-/09:55
MCR1removing Unity and starting just with Compiz does not make the flicker disappear, so I am quite sure the problem has something to do with the last Compiz update on Precise 12.04.09:57
MCR1Anyone here who can help with that ^^ ?10:28
MCR1It is getting really annoying ;) - need new eyes soon :P10:29
MCR1I cannot file a compiz bug with "ubuntu-bug compiz" ?10:29
davidcallemhr3, ping11:43
mhr3pong11:44
davidcallemhr3, how are you?11:44
mhr3hungry :)11:44
njinhello, have you tracked the unity bug of tody's update ?11:44
mhr3and just woke up :P11:45
davidcalleHehe :P there is an issue with the rb scope, a fresh install creates album art in a place we are not looking at.11:45
mhr3oh, where is that?11:46
davidcallemhr3, it's some weird tdb database, here is the Python to extract the right file names http://paste.ubuntu.com/897693/11:46
njinbug 96381511:47
ubot5Launchpad bug 963815 in compiz (Ubuntu) "Session don't start after update" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/96381511:47
davidcallemhr3, really dirty, but it works, I couldn't find my way inside this db so I kind of bruteforced it11:47
mhr3i've never seen such db11:48
mhr3dunno what parses it11:48
davidcallemhr3, me neither, and there is very few doc about it11:49
mhr3davidcalle, maybe it would be easier to patch rb to fallback to the old methods?11:50
mhr3this is pretty crazy, it has like 5 different methods of doing it11:51
davidcallemhr3, hmm the "easy" way would be to translate my dirty hack into 5 lines of Vala :P But yeah... Patching rb... :/11:52
mhr3as i said i have no idea what parses such db, whether it has vala bindings etc... so can't really help11:58
davidcallemhr3, Ok, anyway I'll try to find someone who knows about it, here is what the db looks like inside : http://paste.ubuntu.com/897714/ the file name is in the value, between "tfile" and "ssrctype"12:03
mhr3clearly the rb people will know something about it12:04
davidcallemhr3, yeah... On the other hand, a simple cat also makes the db parsable (with a lot of garbage, but the values are here).12:06
* mhr3 pretends he didn't see that last line :P12:07
davidcallemhr3, yeah, lets cat the db... 0 :-)12:10
davidcalleAnyway, I got to go, it's sunny and I'm going for a picnic, have a nice day ;-)12:11

njinin?16:07
hggdhnjin: yes, I am, for the moment16:07
njinhggdh, great help me with bug 962949 what is ?16:08
ubot5Launchpad bug 962949 in compiz (Ubuntu) "Buttons on the right in live session" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/96294916:08
njinhggdh don't look at the testcase, now it cames at the first boot of a fresh live session16:09
njincomes16:09
hggdhnjin: I have no clue. But I think this is, then, unity 5.8, and there are reports of weird behaviour on it16:10
njinhggdh, ok I assign to unity then ?16:10
hggdhI think compiz is also good now16:12
njinok thanks a lot16:12

lvillaniHi, is anyone else having problems with unity-lens-applications since the update to 5.8.0-0ubuntu1 (precise)?18:11
lvillaniIn particular, nothing is showing up in the dash. Indeed the only thing that seems to work is alt+f2 so I may as well have some other issue...18:12
cjohnstonlvillani: I have the same issue20:39
cjohnstonI was just coming in here to ask20:39
cjohnstonIt is the weekend, so there may not be anyone around tho20:39
lvillaniglad I'm not alone, then20:40
cjohnstonlvillani: I havent looked for a bug, but if you will file one I'll mark it confirmed20:41
lvillanicjohnston, did you have problems with appmenus not working and the wrong font being used throughout the desktop, too?20:42
lvillanihad to nuke ~/.gconf ~/.gnome2* and ~/.config/dconf to "restore" the desktop20:43
cjohnstonnot that I'm aware of20:43
lvillaninot sure if these are related but happened in the timeframe I updated unity20:43
lvillanibad luck, I'm gettings timeout errors on bugs.launchpad.net20:46
cjohnstonI was a bit ago on lp too20:46
lvillaniReporting bug.20:51

cjohnstonty lvillani21:26
mhr3lvillani, did you try logging out and back in?21:29
lvillanimhr3, yes, but I can try again if you wish21:31
mhr3you have strangely few lenses21:31
lvillaniyes, I only have unity-lens-applications installed21:31
lvillani(don't ask me why, it's a long story :-))21:34
lvillanioh, hey, maybe i found what the issue is21:35
lvillanicjohnston, do you have zeitgeist installed?21:35
cjohnstonyes21:37
cjohnstonzeitgeist kills my laptop daily.. mem goes up to > 50%21:37
lvillanimhh, interesting, I hadn't it installed but found references of it in the lens source code21:38
lvillaniso, I installed it, ran setsid unity and boom, it works21:38
lvillaniI have no idea what "fixed" it, though21:42
cjohnstonhrm.. I wonder if the mem issue is why mine breaks21:43
jo-erlend_no doubt, Unity 5.8 is the most buggy version in a _long_ while. Both of them :)21:45
jo-erlend_I can't see anything :)21:47
jo-erlend_http://ubuntuone.com/1W7Br7jVWwI1nvbbktRLhI21:47
jo-erlend_brb21:49
lvillaniyup, it's definitely zeitgeist21:49
ccookeDamn. Internet connection is playing up, so it's going to take ages to update to see if the bug I'm observing is current.21:50
lvillaniLooks like either unity or unity-lens-applications is lacking a package dependency on zeitgeist21:51
lvillaniaha, here it is: on my system I have soft-dependency installation disabled21:54
lvillaniso: unity-lens-applications depends on libzeitgeist which /recommends/ zeitgeist-core OR zeitgeist21:55
lvillaniwhich isn't being installed on my system21:55
lvillanisince the zeitgeist daemon is not running (not installed) the lens doesn't work.21:55
lvillanicjohnston, are zeitgeist-daemon and zeitgeist-fts running on your system?21:59
cjohnstonI see zeitgeist-datah22:01
lvillanicjohnston, no -daemon or -fts?22:02
cjohnstonI don't see it in top, but at the same time it scrolls off the screen22:05
cjohnstonis there another way to check?22:05
lvillanips aux | grep zeitgeist22:05
cjohnstonchris     1852  0.0  0.0 400160  3956 ?        Sl   16:00   0:00 zeitgeist-datahub22:06
cjohnstonchris     3167  0.0  0.0   9380   888 pts/1    S+   18:06   0:00 grep --color=auto zeitgeist22:06
lvillaniwhat about22:06
lvillaniapt-cache policy zeitgeist-core | grep 'Installed'22:06
cjohnstonInstalled: 0.8.99~beta1-122:07
lvillanimhh, so, it is installed but it's not running (AFAIK)22:07
lvillanihold on, let me try something...22:09
cjohnstonfwiw, this is on two machines for me22:09
lvillanikill -s TERM `pidof /usr/lib/unity-lens-applications/unity-applications-daemon`22:10
lvillanithen, try to open the dash and write something, it should spawn a new unity-applications-daemon22:11
lvillanion my system it spawn a new zeitgeist-daemon too22:11
lvillani*spawns22:11
lvillani(if it's not running)22:12
cjohnstonstill no results22:13
lvillanimhhh22:14
lvillanicjohnston, maybe you could try to delete/move ~/.local/share/zeitgeist22:15
lvillanithen make sure that no zeitgeist background process is running22:15
lvillaniand killing unity-applications-daemon again22:15
lvillanithe writing something in the dash, in my experience this brings unity-applications-daemon back, which in turn *should* start the zeitgeist daemons.22:16
cjohnstonworkaround22:16
lvillani?22:17
cjohnstonthat worked..22:17
cjohnstonso we have a workaround22:17
lvillaniyep22:17
lvillaniin my case the zeitgeist daemon wasn't running at all22:17
lvillaniin your case it wasn't running, probably due to a corrupt database.22:18
lvillanii.e.: it was unable to start22:18
lvillanicjohnston, now you could try to move your old zeitgeist data back, killing and restarting the daemons and check ~/.xsession-errors22:19
lvillanibut this is a blind guess, I have *no* idea where zeitgeist writes its log files...22:19
cjohnstonoddly enough, after moving it back, and killing it22:20
cjohnstonit still works22:20
lvillanicjohnston, did you also kill the zeitgeist daemons?22:22
cjohnstonyup22:23
cjohnstonwait.. i used the kill command above22:23
lvillaniah, so you killed unity-applications-daemon only22:23
cjohnstonI marked the bug high based upon: Renders essential features or functionality of the application or dependencies broken or ineffective  and  Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)22:23
lvillanilet's try this22:24
lvillanikill -s TERM `pidof /usr/bin/zeitgeist-daemon`22:24
lvillanikill -s TERM `pidof /usr/lib/zeitgeist/zeitgeist-fts`22:24
lvillani(I don't know the command for zeitgeist-datahub, I don't have it installed)22:25
lvillanikill -s TERM `pidof /usr/lib/unity-lens-applications/unity-applications-daemon`22:25
lvillanithen move your backup copy of the zeitgeist database back to its place22:25
lvillanithen let unity restart unity-applications-daemon22:25
cjohnstonnow it doesnt work22:27
lvillaniif it doesn't work again, then I think it is safe to assume that you have a corrupted database which prevents zeitgeist-daemon to start22:27
lvillanicjohnston, I think you should file a separate bug report for that and attach a copy of your zeitgeist database (provided it does not contain sensitive information)22:27
lvillanisince our issues are different22:27
cjohnston** WARNING **: zeitgeist-datahub.vala:224: Unable to get name "org.gnome.zeitgeist.datahub" on the bus!22:28
lvillanicjohnston, that shouldn't be a problem (I think), since you didn't kill zeitgeist-datahub before, either22:28
mhr3cjohnston, so you kept a backup of your db and if you use that zg doesn't start?22:31
cjohnstoncorrect22:31
* mhr3 is zg upstream and would like to know what's going on here22:31
mhr3any errors from zeitgeist-daemon ?22:32
cjohnstonmhr3: yes22:32
cjohnstonwhere would I look mhr322:32

mhr3how big is it?22:37
cjohnstonmhr3: since your in the know on zg.. are you aware of any issues where zg runs away with all of my ram?22:37

cjohnstonis there a bug on that?22:38

mhr3oh.. right22:38
mhr3sorry22:38
cjohnstonmhr3: I just got unity-lens-video crashed with DBusException in call_blocking(): org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process /usr/bin/zeitgeist-daemon exited with status 122:38
cjohnstonmhr3: yes... I don't know though that its fts.. I just kill the pid and move on22:39
mhr3oh so it at least return an error code22:39
cjohnstonbecause it makes my system inoperable22:39
cjohnstoni got a ubuntu-bug popup and it wants me to report a bug in LP22:39
cjohnstonbut its against unity-lens-video22:39
mhr3cjohnston, well if zg itself is using lots of mem than something is terribly wrong, it should be around ~5 mb all the time22:40
mhr3fts on the other hand has a xapian index, and that has some memory issues apparently :(22:40
cjohnstonill have to look into it mhr3 next time it happens22:41
cjohnstonI normally am stuck having to ssh in to kill the pid22:41
mhr3but the error code is interesting22:41

cjohnstonprobably because its against ubuntu.. I'm bug control or whatever its called, so i can see alot of stuff22:49
cjohnstonif i subscribe you would that let you ahve access?22:49
cjohnston722:49
cjohnstonuggh22:49
mhr3yea, i'm bug-control too :)22:50
mhr3clearly that's not enough :)22:51
mhr3ok now it worked22:51
lvillanicjohnston, can you lower the importance of bug 964146 ?22:51

cjohnstonto?22:52
lvillaniit shouldn't happen on a default installation since weak-dependencies are installed by APT by default, IIRC22:52
cjohnstonbbiaf, dinner22:52
mhr3sadly there's nothing interesting there, no logs :(22:52
lvillanicjohnston, don't know.. "Normal", maybe or even low22:52
lvillaniI think it's pretty uncommon to disable installation of weak dependencies22:53
* lvillani is a control freak...22:53
mhr3cjohnston, any chance you could open a bug against zeitgeist with your activity.sqlite from the backup that causes the problem?22:55
cjohnstonmhr3: lp.net/zeitgeist?23:06
cjohnstondo you mind looking through it real quick and then letting me remove ie?23:18
cjohnstonuggh23:18
mhr3cjohnston, holy crap, that's huge23:28
mhr3cjohnston, are you using u1 a lot?23:28
cjohnstoni was23:28
cjohnstoni moved most of my stuff off of it23:28
mhr3i think the u1 dataprovider is kinda screwed up, but let me look at it first23:29
cjohnstonI blame Aq23:32
mhr350% of the uris in there are uids from u1 :(23:33
mhr3it shouldn't log those at all23:33
cjohnstonis that how it tells if they are in sync or not?23:34
* davidcalle wakes up23:38

davidcalleHehe23:43
davidcallemhr3, is "Zeitgeist not installed" really a use case that lenses should support? What do the other lenses do, stay silent?23:45
mhr3davidcalle, they dont really work in that case... which is a bug obviously :)23:46
mhr3bug in a library though... lenses will work once that is fixed23:47
davidcallemhr3, why doesn't Zeitgeist have a hard dependency on Unity, by the way?23:48
DaekdroomIsn't that the other way around?23:48
davidcalleRight :)23:48
mhr3well, i dont have strong opinion either way23:49
