hypershockHey guys, so i have everything fixed that I was talking about yesterday. But, now, I can see after watching a video, just 12 minutes in and my screen goes black. I have screen disabling and blanking disabled in power management and my screensaver is set for 60 minutes. also, I completely resetted .kde yesterday by renaming it. where else can i look for this beast of a problem?00:00
jlkkljhi can only use the acpi workarounds00:05

hypershockconsidering all of us are the same as you and not even paid to be here, please have some patience.00:10
hypershockplease, start from the beginning, what did you do to get to this place in life?00:10
jlkkljhi ttries to install kubuntu00:12
hypershockwhich version did you try and on what type of hardware did you try it?00:13

jlkkljhthat is my problem00:19
jlkkljhand i cant resolve it00:19
hypershockargh, i'm gonna ignore if that is fine. try googling that if you are not gonna answer the questions so we can begin to help you. In general one of two things happened. You either installed a highly experimental distribution or your hardware is extremely old. if you want more help you have to answer the questions.00:20
hypershockBluesKaj: btw, I just found that I had xscreensaver running and it is set to 10 minutes. that baby is out of here now!00:20

jlkkljhno00:26
hypershockjlkkljh: there were 2 questions there, I need 2 answers. :)00:26
jlkkljhi wanted a smaller system to play minecraft on00:27
jlkkljhthan xp00:27
jlkkljh 00:28
jlkkljhok it works00:28
jlkkljhthe chat i meant00:28
hypershockheh, my 1.6ghz dual core pentium with 4gb of ddr2 fails to run minecraft in linux, very clunky at best.00:28
jlkkljhok i wonder why00:29
hypershockjlkkljh: goto http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862288 see if that helps you out there. Quite a few people discussing your problem in there. If that thread fails to help you out, I strongly suggest you use 11.04 or 10.0400:29
jlkkljhi had just downloaded wubi00:30
hypershockjlkkljh: because minecraft practically demands an nvidia or ati card. while it is a cubish world it still demands advanced graphics manipulations.00:30
jlkkljhtoday00:30
jlkkljhand installed today00:30
hypershockso you still have your windows system eh? here is what I would have done. download the livecd, and boot from that, if the livecd works, then do a boot & nuke. ie, wipe the hard drive (after backing up all docs, pics, whatevers) and complete fresh install the linux from the livecd.00:32
jlkkljhi cant use live cd00:32
jlkkljh    /live usb00:32
hypershockyour bios doesnt' allow booting from usb/cdrom?00:33
jlkkljhit will but intel boot agentr dosent pickup a iso file00:33
jlkkljh                                                                       agent*00:34
hypershockyou know that makes no sense. if you make burn and iso file to a cd, you'll have a bootable cd, just like a windows install cd. The reboot your computer, put in the cd quickly, and watch it boot into linux.00:34
jlkkljhit wont burn a cd though00:35
jlkkljhand i dont have a cd00:35
hypershockok00:36
hypershockso wubi it was.00:36
hypershockare you reading that thread?00:36
jlkkljhyes00:36
jlkkljhsomewhat00:36
hypershockare you on the same comp that you installed kubuntu on?00:37
jlkkljhno00:37
jlkkljhim on a windows 7 right beside it00:37
hypershockah, I just remembered an idea that works when you can't boot on a comp from cd or usb. Do this, make a bootable live cd of linux you are interested in on your windows 7 machine. Then turn off your machines. take out the windows 7 hdd, install the gateway hard drive in place, boot with the cd, install the linux. when complete, turn off machine, take out hard drive and put back in gateway. put win 7 hard drive back. boot up both and enjoy.00:39
jlkkljhim not wanting to install on win700:40
jlkkljhtho00:40
hypershockok, I realize you are "somewhat" reading that thread, please don't "somewhat" read what I just suggested. :)00:41
jlkkljhand this hdd/hd has wires connecting to it00:41
jlkkljhok00:41
jlkkljhwhats oneiric00:42
jlkkljh???????00:42
jlkkljhim a noob00:42
hypershockwhat i said was after you made the live cd on the win 7 machine. turn off BOTH machines. take out win 7 hdd. take out gateway hdd. put gateway hdd in win 7 machine. install linux on gateway hdd. finish. remove gateway hdd. put gateway hdd back in gateway. put win 7 hdd back in win 7 machine. ta da. you still have win 7.00:42
hypershockoneiric is 11.1000:42
jlkkljhits a all in 1 win 700:43

jlkkljhcan anyone else help and thanks hyper shock00:47
jlkkljhwin 7 wont burn either00:48
jlkkljhya know00:49
hypershockyou do know that you have match burn media to the burner type of the drive.00:49
jlkkljhoh00:50
jlkkljhthat helps00:50
jlkkljhcdrewritable00:50
hypershocklike if the drive is rated dvd-r as a burner, then you can buy dvd-r disc and burn them in it. the "-" "+" and "- +" are also rating types not conjuctives. the best drives are dvd/bluray "+-" rw. as the burn and read everything.00:51
jlkkljhshould i go to a different server00:51
hypershockcd rewritable is usually cd-rw. naw, if its kubuntu, perhaps when tv shows are over ppl will start talking again00:52
jlkkljhok umm could a server work on that machine00:53
hypershockyour problem isn't the gui00:54
hypershocktry installing a lesser version of ubuntu, 10.04 LTS. You'll probably find that will work better.00:54

lordievaderdownload them from here: http://kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=4112:05
lordievaderI've confirmed it, installing the theme as instructed in the guide work. The option of getting new themes through System Settings does not, perhaps a dev can take a look at it?12:07
mydogsnameisrudyjust cant find the themes after you download  this will work form the link above12:08
lordievadermydogsnameisrudy: you mean you cant find them after you downloaded them from kde-look.org?12:09
BluesKajmydogsnameisrudy,  themes should be listed in the themes tab in login screen in sys settings12:09
mydogsnameisrudyi got it12:09
BluesKajheh, now the system settings fonts have changed back to defaults and any changes I make aren't holding12:12
lordievaderBluesKaj: Didn't someone else got that same problem yesterday?12:13
lordievaderbrb, gotta check a theme.12:13

BluesKajmydogsnameisrudy,  whwere did you find he themes , ~/.kde dir?12:18
lordievaderJMichaelX: It is slower than another Google page but it ain't dead or horribly slow. I get referred to https://www.google.com/chrome btw...12:19
BluesKajI tested one theme install , it's not listed in the theme tab in the login12:19
mydogsnameisrudyi downloaded from kde eyecandy and put them in the download dir , not found the other ones yet12:19
JMichaelXlordievader: it is horribly slow. that isn't even open for debate, as far as i'm concerned, but tyvm for the link.12:20
lordievaderJMichaelX: no problem12:20
JMichaelXlordievader: i know this does not relate directly to kubuntu, but what i am referring to is the repository @ dl.google.com . the link you gave me, does it have anything to do with pointing to an alternate mirror of some kind?12:23
lordievaderJMichaelX: Ah sorry, I didn't know you where asking for a repos, I just typed it in a browser and got redirected to there, so it probably has nothing to do with any repos.12:24
BluesKajJMichaelX,  don't fret , we're all encountering the samer problem ...your update is stalled ?12:25
JMichaelXok. i had just assumed everyone would know what i was referring to, which of course is not necessarily the case12:25
lordievaderNope, sorry12:26
JMichaelXBluesKaj: i am not fretting so much as annoyed, as this has been a recurring issue with google for some time12:26
BluesKajok , gotta reboot ...this sys settings issue needs a resart , I think12:27
JMichaelXlordievader: ty for responding, either way. you are probably just a bit smarter, and are using chromium instead of chrome12:27
lordievaderJMichaelX: No problem, and yes I do use chromium.12:27
lordievaderWhy have I never known about the Google Repos...? I see here a post from 2008 talking about it XD12:29

mydogsnameisrudyoh thats not far i want 12.0419:46
mydogsnameisrudy;)19:46
lordievaderSomewhere that is very good, and somewhere that is very wierd...19:46
mydogsnameisrudybut im not doing a reload now19:46
lordievaderI'll just wait to when it is officially released19:48
mydogsnameisrudywell im running tripleboot and im not into reloading19:48
BluesKajtriple boot ...BSD too ?19:49
mydogsnameisrudywinxp  linuxmint12 and kubuntu19:50
lordievadermydogsnameisrudy: the other day I thought about how cool it would be to be running 2 os'es on the same machine on the same time, guess it will never happen though...19:50
lordievaderI have a feeling you don't use XP much...19:50
mydogsnameisrudyi have kubuntu and virtual xp on a dual monitor desktop works  well19:51
savioanyone tell me what is DRI accelearation on opeGL driver?19:53
BluesKaji used to dual boot windows 7 and kubuntu on this pc , but windows was seldom used , so I dumped it19:53
savioBluesKaj:19:53
mydogsnameisrudyya dont use it much19:54
BluesKajDirect Rendering19:54

heinkel_111hello, does anyone know about the moonlight plugin, does it work for kubuntu?>19:56
lordievaderMoonlight, as in the linux version of Silverlight?19:57
BluesKajhttp://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DRM or this19:57
macoheinkel_111: yes it does, but its utility is limited because it does not have DRM support like Silverlight, so it cant work for Netflix for example19:57
BluesKajoops19:57
heinkel_111lordievader: yes19:57
macoerm, DRM in the case I'm talking about means Digital Restrictions Management19:57
macoor Digital Rights Management19:57
macowait i forget which one's the real name19:57
macoanyway19:57
lordievaderDigital Rights Management19:57
macothe anti-piracy-annoy-the-crap-out-of-users-stuff is not supported in Moonlight19:58
heinkel_111does that mean it does not work with the tv-via-web players?19:58
lordievaderDepends19:58
macomight depend on the player19:58
lordievaderIf they do not use DRM then you should be able to watch it19:58
BluesKajnope DRM can be Direct Rendering Manager as well19:58
macothe only thing ive used moonlight for was to vote in the Webbys, because their poll software was moonlight for some silly reason19:58
heinkel_111but there is not a moonlight player in apt repositories for kubuntu?19:58
lordievaderWhat browser are you using?19:59
macoBluesKaj: in the case of moonlight, we're talking about the digital rights one. it just happened to come up while you were talking graphics19:59
heinkel_111apt-cache shows no moonlight19:59
BluesKajmoonlight doesn't really work in kubuntu despite what some ppl are saying on the internet19:59
heinkel_111lordievader: rekonq, konqueror or firefox19:59
macoBluesKaj: when did it stop?20:00
BluesKajmaco,  you got it working ?20:00
lordievaderhttp://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/download.aspx20:00
macomoonlight-plugin-mozilla is the package20:00
macoBluesKaj: yes, as i said i used it to vote in the Webbys20:01
lordievaderI read here that Moonlight supports Ubuntu 9.1020:01
maco11.04 has it in the repos20:01
BluesKajwhat about chromium?20:01
lordievaderDisregard my link...20:01
macomoonlight-plugin-chromium20:01
macobut hmm it does seem to have been removed after natty20:01
BluesKajchromium looks in /usr/lib/mozilla for plugins20:02
heinkel_111...so the sun has failed and the moon is dead?20:02
heinkel_111no more moonlight, I mean :)20:02
* heinkel_111 is getting closer to buying a windows funputer20:03
BluesKajwell , so much for netflix20:03
macoi'm still running natty on most systems :P20:03
macoBluesKaj: oh i never said it worked on netflix. because like i said, DRM. just that moonlight does technically work.20:03
macoi mean, it installed, it ran20:04
macoor rather, DID work...20:04
* maco wishes launchpad made it clearer why a package was removed20:04
BluesKajwemaco , it was supposed to support netflix iirc20:04
BluesKajmaco, ..sry20:04
macowhen did they ever claim that?20:05
macoi never saw a claim that moonlight supported DRM20:05
heinkel_111I just downloaded the plugin20:05
heinkel_111should i stick it in /usr/lib/mozilla ?20:06
BluesKaj I recall reading about it last yr when netflix was rumoured to be setup to run on a moonlight chromium plugin20:06
heinkel_111anyway I am not that interested in netflix it is an american outfit isnt it?20:07
heinkel_111In scandinavia we have other sources of goodness which would be nice to tap into for entertainment20:07
BluesKaj /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, heinkel_11120:07
heinkel_111ie. viaplay, tv2sumo, canalplus, camoyo and stuff like that20:08
heinkel_111we watch different sports like football that you call "soccer" and stuff20:09
BluesKajhen yeah , I tried it here in Canada when they made the big anouncement at netflix , acting as if they were doing the country a big favour ...the availble movies were garbage20:09
heinkel_111I was getting to "and we watch quality movies too" :D20:10
heinkel_111but shouldnt be spamming this channel with such discussions :)\20:10
BluesKajthe didn't have the rights to show anything worthwhile , altho reports lately say the inventory is betting better20:11
BluesKajgetting better20:12
BluesKaj#kubuntu-offtopic :)20:12
heinkel_111what is an xpi installer by the way?20:23
heinkel_111I just realised the moonlight came with a lot of files that probably should be in different locations20:23
heinkel_111there are even quite a few .dll files, thought that was windows stuff20:24
BluesKajheinkel_111,  ok , then probly need to run in wine ...not sure , never tried moonlight20:26
copaceticI used this guide http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-oracle-java-7-in-ubuntu-12-04.html    to try to install oracle-java on 12.04, it worked on my laptop but on my desktop im getting the following result http://pastebin.com/fScckWAW   is anyone having similar problems?20:27
copaceticIf anyone has problems with java and 12.04 it looks like the package i was using was having trouble downloading from oracle, I was able to hack it and make it work though21:08
