jalcineDoes -u work with scp the same way it would with cp?12:14
* jalcine should just try it.12:14
jalcineNope, it doesn't.12:14

Sidewinder1jalcine, I just "man"ed scp; it seems kind of involved (and way beyond my abilities) it may not be a 'beginner's' question. You might want to ask in #ubuntu.12:31

Merathyadfhi i have problems installing ubuntu. i am trying to install it alongside windows but everytime an error is displayed "couldnt install bootloader" i am given with different options to where install the bootloader manually but none seem to be working. help17:17
forestpiskiefirst is this a real install or are you trying with wubi, also which version of the OS is it?17:18
forestpiskiehi wildmanne3917:18
wildmanne39hi forestpiskie17:18
Merathyadfi am tried to install via usb-stick. its the version 11.10 desktop17:19
forestpiskieok - does the machine already have something like windows on it ?17:20
Merathyadfyes. windows 717:20
forestpiskieand this is a proper install not a wubi one - or are you trying to install inside windows?17:20
Merathyadfi am sorry but what is a wubi?17:21
forestpiskieubuntu inside windows17:21
Merathyadfno its a proper install and i started the installation via the boot menu17:21
forestpiskieok - so which options have you been trying for the bootlaoder17:23
Merathyadfall of them17:23
Merathyadf:)17:23
forestpiskielol17:23
forestpiskieare you in the liveusb now at the same prompt? if so - do a screenshot and paste it to an image pastebin like imgur17:24
Merathyadfno sorry i am trying to run ubuntu on this machine17:24
forestpiskieok and when you start the machine the bootloader fails now I assume17:25
Merathyadfyes. i do net get the option to choose between windows and ubuntu17:25

forestpiskiethat's ok - picture tells a thousands words - do you have dynamic disks? or are there only primary/extended/logicals17:33
forestpiskieyou certainly appear to have than 4 primaries17:35
Merathyadfi have 1 dynamic disc17:36
Merathyadfits marked as e17:36
Merathyadfcalled "wechseldatenträger"17:36
forestpiskieafaik ubuntu has trouble installing to dynamic disks17:37
forestpiskiewildmanne39: do you know?17:37
wildmanne39Hi, I am not an expert but I know that you can not install ubuntu until you convert the drive from dynamic disk, it would be best to get oldfreds help17:42
forestpiskiewas my thought - unless there happens to be someone in here17:43
forestpiskieMerathyadf: do you have a forum account?17:43
Merathyadfno17:43
Merathyadfbut i can get one :)17:43
wildmanne39it is a task to convert the dynamic and oldfred is one of the best17:43
forestpiskieyou might be better making a thread there17:43
wildmanne39I would post in installations in the forum17:44
forestpiskieMerathyadf: to help the issue along - before you make the thread, boot the usb and go here then follow the instructions - otherwise you'll be asked all sorts of exploratory questions17:44
Merathyadfok, but i am not trying to install unbuntu on my dynamic disc i want to install it on the partition i have left17:45
forestpiskiehttp://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/17:45
forestpiskieyea - we understand that Merathyadf17:45
Merathyadfok :>17:46

Culiforgetrying to change file/directory perms. used sudo and root (each, not both at once). I get no errors on command line but file perms remain unchanged.21:02
Culiforgejust did '$ sudo chmod 777 -R -v /media/TByte/nwn' and got big list of verified changes... get permission denied when I run a script in that dir21:09
philipballewchown does it to Culiforge I think21:10
philipballewunless I am not sure what you need help on21:10
Culiforgephilipballew: I'm already owner of files and directories.. at least that's what Thunar tells me.. but I can't run anything in there.. tells me permission denied. I guess I need to know a) am I doing something wrong and b) how to I get it fixed. :)21:12
philipballewCuliforge, id look and see what the shell says as well probably about owernship21:12
Culiforgephilipballew: previoust sudo chmod gave confirmation that everything in directory was changed to 77721:14
Culiforgephilipballew: so I use chown?21:14
Culiforgephilipballew: looking at chown manpage now, I don't see an arg to view ownership.. what should I be using?21:16
philipballewi think you specify who owns files by saying the group and user that owns them21:17
philipballewi gtg. someone should help maybe21:18
JoseeAntonioRCuliforge: Hello! I have just arrived. Maybe I can take a look at your problem.21:19
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: woot! have at it21:19
JoseeAntonioRCuliforge: Can I have the name of the file you want to run?21:22
JoseeAntonioRCuliforge: Are you still here?21:31
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: yeah, sorry.. someone at the door...21:34
JoseeAntonioRNo problem.21:34
JoseeAntonioRIs the script you are trying to run in that folder?21:34
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: it's a script called fixinstall... yes in that folder21:34
JoseeAntonioROk. The filename of the script is fixinstall, or what's it?21:34
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: yes, ./fixinstall (or what's it?) I think that's what you mean21:35
JoseeAntonioRThen, you should open a Terminal and write /media/TByte/nwn'/./fixinstall21:37
JoseeAntonioRThat should run the script.21:37
JoseeAntonioRWhen you open Nautilus, is there a file icon for it? I mean, like a LO spreadsheet, or something similar.21:37
Culiforge$ ./fixinstall21:38
Culiforgebash: ./fixinstall: Permission denied21:38
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: xubuntu so thunar but yes it's there21:38
JoseeAntonioROk. Then you should issue this two commands:21:39
JoseeAntonioRsudo chmod 777 /media/TByte/nwn'/./fixinstall21:39
JoseeAntonioRsudo chmod 777 /media/TByte/nwn'/./21:39
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: it goes to a >21:41
JoseeAntonioRThen, just the first command.21:41
Culiforgesudo chmod 777 /media/TByte/nwn'/./fixinstall gives me >21:42
JoseeAntonioROk, and what about sudo ./fixinstall?21:42
Culiforgesudo: ./fixinstall: command not found21:43
JoseeAntonioRHave you done cd to that folder?21:43
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: yes, I'm in that folder21:44
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: gary@xUForge:/media/TByte/nwn$ sudo ./fixinstall21:44
JoseeAntonioRAnd if you do ./fixinstall directly it gives you a permission error, right?21:44
Culiforgeright21:44
JoseeAntonioRCan you access that folder in Thunar?21:45
Culiforgeyes21:45
JoseeAntonioRCan you please access the /. folder, the one before fixinstall?21:45
JoseeAntonioR(In Thunar)21:45
Culiforgeok, done21:45
Culiforgeone level up21:46
JoseeAntonioROk, once you are in there, right click the fixinstall folder, and click Properties. You should be able to change permissions in that folder.21:48
JoseeAntonioRThen, select Read and Write in everything.21:48
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: it won't let me.. I can change the dropdown but as soon as I select it reverts back21:49
JoseeAntonioRI know why: It's on a CD. Am I right?21:51
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: umm, quick question.. in the properties dialog/permissions tab.. there is an info line about SELinux context.. that wasn't  there on previous installs21:51
Culiforgeno, another drive. not cd/dvd21:52
JoseeAntonioRHmm. Can you please try to open a new Terminal and type in gksudo thunar?21:52
JoseeAntonioRThat will open a Thunar window with full permissions. Maybe that's it.21:52
Culiforgeok, thunar with root is open but I've got no options to go to other HDD's like 'TByte'21:55
JoseeAntonioRGo to the root, and then enter /media. Then you'll see it.21:55
Culiforgeok, found it.. yup, that's what I did21:55
JoseeAntonioROk. Were you able to change the permissions this time?21:56
Culiforgeit's working, tell you in a sec21:56
JoseeAntonioROk :)21:56
Culiforge... skipping symlinks21:57
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: nope, as soon as it finished working.. dropdown reverted back to 'none' for access21:57
JoseeAntonioRMaybe you can make a backup of the program somewhere else, and then run it from the folder in the Terminal.21:58
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: ok, I moved the script to another drive.. and it ran.. it failed because the rest of the stuff wasn't there. but it ran. why would I be prevented from changing properties on another drive..22:01
JoseeAntonioRDon't know the reason for that.22:02
JoseeAntonioRSo, now, we may have a solution.22:02
JoseeAntonioRDo cd to the folder you want to run the script on.22:02
JoseeAntonioROnce you are in that folder, write the FULL path to ./fixinstall22:02
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: wait.. the selinux thing is coming back to haunt me.. I installed fedora on another drive.. would it have put the selinux policies on that drive/ all other drives?22:02
JoseeAntonioRHmm, don't know exactly.22:03
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: 'cause selinux isnt' part of ubuntu is it?22:03
JoseeAntonioRI think not, I don't have the exact information at the moment.22:04
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: but the path back to the script thing is working.. yeah! thanks.. now to do the same with the other scripts.. and/or find out why selinux is interfering22:06
JoseeAntonioRYep. At least you have a temporary solution.22:06
CuliforgeJoseeAntonioR: good deal.. thanks a lot22:06
JoseeAntonioRNo problem. If you need anything else, make sure to come back, we'll be here, ready to help :)22:07
