eein_morning12:27
eein_not many folks here but i was hoping to get some input on whether anyone here uses a m-audio 1010lt with ubuntu?12:28
Guest63107hi13:35
holsteineein_: yes13:48
holsteinits plug and play AFAIK13:49
holsteincouple folks in #opensourcemusicians use that card with ubuntu and others13:49
holsteinhttp://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-MAudio is what i reference13:51
eein_holstein, my issue is that i'm using mint currently which isnt really a necessity but should be similar to ubuntu and the card shows but instead of 10 inputs 10 outputs its a 1 and 113:57
holsteinyou use JACK with it, and it should just work13:58
holsteinyou can try ubuntustudio 12.04 live13:58
holsteinyou can ask in that channel i linked13:58
holsteinyou can try differnt kernels13:58
eein_hmm i think the default is pulse no?13:58
holsteineein_: depends on what you want to do13:58
holsteinif you just want to surf the web and hear youtube videos, then you will not utilize anything that card will provide13:59
holsteinif you want to route to several differnt outputs, you could do that with pavucontrol and pulse13:59
holsteinif you want to route different recording sources, or signals out for mixing or any more commercial/professional applications... JACK is the tool14:01
holsteinthe folks i mentioned above that use that card use JACK with it14:01
holsteineein_: if you see them all in alsamixer, then you are god14:02
holsteingood*14:02
holsteinyou can run aplay -l and check too14:02
holsteinits likely you just arent using multichannel applications14:02
holsteinpavucontrol should allow you to route similarly to how JACK would using pulse14:03
holsteinyou can search for it in the package manager of your choice14:03
eein_holstein, imagebin.org/20614414:06
eein_thats a screenshot to better explain14:06
holsteini would just use JACK14:07
eein_pulseaudio control does the same thin14:07
eein_thing14:08
holsteinsure.. pipeman reference a bug14:08
holsteini know he has that device14:08
holsteini would just buddy up with him and ask how he utilizes all the channels14:08
eein_just shows one input one output.  i will try jack but just thought it odd14:08
holsteinyup14:08
holsteineein_: i would ask pipemanmusic14:08
holsteinin #opensourcemusicians14:09
bluebirdi want to set xp as my default in the boot menu.im using burg now.i tried setting it but its not working or saved14:14
holstein!grub | bluebird14:14
ubottubluebird: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10)14:14
holstein^ i would check there... maybe go to just grub for a bit and sort it out... or look around about editing the default in burg.. should be similar14:15
bluebirdi went through some forum help and the default is already set to 4 , which is xp14:16
holsteinbluebird: sure... and you can reorder that14:16
holsteinOR, just change the default.. both of which are explained above14:16
holsteini do it quite often... i unhide grub and maybe boot one of the different kernels14:17
holsteinits a matter of editing the line that says DEFAULT14:17
bluebirdyes14:18
bluebirdbut its already edited14:18
bluebirdand i think its something about saving14:18
holsteinsudo nano /etc/default/grub or gksudo gedit...14:19
holsteinchange the GRUB_DEFAULT=014:19
holsteinor, confirm its been changed.. then run14:19
holsteinsudo update-grub14:20
holsteinif thats not working, i would reference the burg documentation14:20
bluebirdokay14:21
bluebirdbut im using burg and do i have to edit grub?14:22
holsteinbluebird: i would think so14:22
holsteini have not used burg...14:23
bluebirdokay14:23
holsteini assume its just a graphical front end, and uses the same config file14:23
bluebirdhow do i edit it?14:23
holsteinbluebird: ?14:23
holsteinsudo nano /etc/default/grub or gksudo gedit...14:23
holsteinbluebird: actually14:24
holsteinim reading this now14:24
bluebirdsorry, didnt i told you im only two day old?14:24
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=155163414:24
holstein/etc/default/burg not in /boot/burg/burg.cfg.14:24
holsteinbluebird: i would just stick to the defaults then14:24
holsteinmaybe just remove burg14:24
bluebirdbut it looks better14:25
holsteinbluebird: sure.. then, you *can* figure this out14:25
bluebirdi went through that forum help before14:25
holsteinhowever, ubuntustudio nor ubuntu ship with it by default, so you are going to "get what you can get" as far as support14:26
holsteinand i have only troubleshooted it enough to know i dont want/need it14:26
holsteinhowever, im sure you can make it function as desired14:26
bluebirdokay14:26
holsteintry sudo nano /etc/default/burg14:26
bluebirdcan you look at the last comment on that forum topic14:27
bluebirdi tried to do it14:27
bluebirdbut didnt understood "Some people miss this out, uncomment "GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true"."14:27
holsteini see the boot screen about every 3 months or so14:28
holsteinand for a few seconds14:28
holsteini would get rid of burg if its not working as it should14:28
holsteinif you want to troubleshoot it, open pastebin and give me the text from that file14:29
bluebirdi will but i think i should try to fix it14:29
holstein /etc/default/burg14:29
holsteinand make sure you run sudo update-burg after editing14:29
bluebirdin that file default is 414:29
holsteinbluebird: OK... is 4 what you need?14:29
holsteindo you know its 4?14:29
holstein0 is the firt one14:30
holsteinSO, the next kernel (assuming you have a few) is likely 314:30
bluebirdand i didnt had to edit it.it was already 4 when i opened.yes 4 is xp14:30
holsteini would expect to see xp at 3 or 514:30
holsteinbluebird: you'll need to link some things for me to see that14:30
bluebirdokay14:31
holsteinyou can also try #ubuntu if you prefer14:31
holsteinthis is not really an ubuntustudio issue, and you might get more help there faster14:31
bluebirdokay14:31
bluebirdwhich file should i show?14:32
holstein /etc/default/burg14:33
bluebirddid you get it?14:34
holsteinnope14:35
holsteini dont dcc14:35
holsteinyou can just paste the link in the channel14:35
bluebirdwhere should i upload it?14:36
holstein!paste14:36
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.14:36
bluebirdhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/908800/14:37
bluebirdis that it?14:38
bluebirddid you understood line 13 to 15?14:39
bluebirdhey14:40
holsteinbluebird: and you ran sudo update-burg afterwards?14:41
bluebirdno14:41
holsteinbluebird: OK... thats the first line14:42
holstein# If you change this file, run 'update-burg' afterwards to update14:42
holsteinthats how grub works as well14:42
bluebirdas i didnt change anything14:42
bluebirdit was like that when i opened it14:42
holsteinbluebird: you changed GRUB_DEFAULT=414:42
holstein?14:42
bluebirdnope14:42
holsteinbluebird: something did14:43
holsteinand if you know you want 4, which im not sure you do, then issue that command14:43
bluebirdyes the super boot manager14:43
holsteinit literlaly wont hurt to issue that command14:43
holsteinbluebird: i wouldnt be using multiple boot managers14:43
bluebirdi did it now14:43
holsteini would expect issues14:43
bluebirddoes ubuntu has another boot manager14:44
holsteingrub is the default14:44
bluebirdokay14:44
holsteinthere are 3rd party ones.. plop, gag... also lilo14:44
bluebirdokay14:44
holsteingrub is the one that is arguably most supported14:44
holsteinand thats the one that would just be working for you right now as well14:44
holsteinOR, xp is not #414:45
bluebirdbut can you explain "Some people miss this out, uncomment "GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true"."14:45
holsteinbluebird: no14:45
holsteini dont use burg14:45
holsteini dont know what that means... it doesnt seem like something you should need14:45
holsteinuncomment it, run sudo update-burg and see what it does14:45
holsteinlook for a burg support channel and ask14:46
bluebirdhow do i uncomment it?14:46
holsteinemail the maintainer, or try and find a man page14:46
bluebirdthats my question14:46
holsteinbluebird: yeah, you get rid of the #14:46
holsteinand i dont think you should be messing around in there14:46
bluebirdokay14:46
holsteini really feel like you should be using the system as close to default as possible right now14:46
holsteinbut, thats what uncommenting means14:46
holsteinyou delete the # so the computer reads it14:47
holsteinotherwise, its ignored14:47
bluebirdokay14:47
bluebirdGenerating burg.cfg ...14:47

bluebirddone14:47
bluebirdbluebird@bluebird-Sy14:47
bluebirdhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/908811/14:48
bluebirdit shows that xp is 5th14:48
holsteincool.. its 4th for now then14:49
bluebirdokay14:50
bluebirdso removing burg is the option?14:50
holsteinbluebird: thats an option14:50
holsteinif its not working, i would remove it, but i dont care what something i see for maybe 2 seconds a month looks like14:51
bluebirdyou dont shut down for a month?14:51
holsteini have mostly laptops or servers and dont reboot them much14:51
bluebirdhow do i learn all the command line?14:52
bluebirdthat we use it terminal14:52
bluebirduse in^14:53
bluebirdwhere you from?14:53
bluebirdi understand you dont want to talk about that14:55
bluebirdthanks for the help14:55
bluebirdhey i more thing14:56
bluebirdcan i edit that burg file without the terminal command?14:57
holsteinim in the US... you can open it with the other command i mentioned14:58
holsteingksudo gedit /path/to/file14:59
holsteingksudo gedit /etc/default/burg14:59
bluebirdi mean is there another way?14:59
holsteinif you just dont want to see a terminal window, you can hit alt+f2 and run that command from there14:59
holsteinbluebird: you can open a root account, login from there and click on the file14:59
bluebirdwhat if the path is a long one?14:59
bluebirdokay15:00
holsteinyou can right click on it and try "open with"15:00
holsteinbluebird:  this is all open, there are endless possibilities15:00
holsteinbluebird: tab auto completes... just like in here15:00
bluebirdbut when i edited it the save option dimmed out15:00
holsteinyou type "hol" and hit tab, and it auto completes15:00
holsteinbluebird: you are not root15:01
holsteingksudo is what gives you the rights to edit that file15:01
holsteingives your normal user15:01
bluebirdim using an admin acc15:02
holsteinbluebird: you shouldnt be15:02
holsteinbluebird: you dont want to be15:02
holsteinand you likely arent if that box is greyed out15:03
bluebirdwhats the problem of being admin15:04
bluebirdhttp://imagebin.org/20615815:05
holsteinbluebird: its just like the windows user structure15:05
bluebirdokay15:05
bluebirddid u see the pic?15:06
holsteinif you are browsing the web, and something comes up that says "do something bad" and the user has those rights, and gives those rights to the web browser, thenn something bad will happen15:06
holsteinand happen system wide15:06
holsteinwhen, there is *no* good reason for a web browser to have admin privs15:06
bluebirdokay15:06
holsteinbluebird: i would make another normal user15:06
bluebirdokay15:07
holsteinget used to the use of sudo15:07
bluebirdso why the grey out?15:07
bluebirdi even unlock it15:07
holsteinbluebird: not sure.. maybe you still dont have root privs15:07
bluebirdi thought when i unlock it , i get root priv15:08
holsteinbluebird: i have no idea what that lock is or means15:09
holsteinits a GUI that has no meaning to me15:09
holsteini know when im in the terminal and i run...15:10
holsteinsudo -s15:10
holsteini can edit what i need to15:10
bluebirdi didnt understood that type hol and hit tab15:10
holsteinbluebird: type hol15:10
holsteinthen hit the tab key15:10
bluebirdin terminal?15:10
holsteinbluebird: right here15:10
holsteini type b and hit tab and bluebird is auto-completed15:11
holsteinthe path is the same in the terminal15:11
bluebirdokay15:11
holsteinOK15:12
holsteinso try it.. type h and hit tab15:12
bluebirdi mean do i have to type /etc/default/burg manually15:13
holsteinbluebird: you can type in /et and hit tab15:14
holsteinthen def and hit tab15:14
bluebirdokay15:14
holsteinyou can always hit tab in the terminal and get the path to auto complete15:14
holsteinor list options available15:14
holsteinso you dont have any typos15:14
holsteinanyways.. i need to run... i would try #ubuntu ...you are not usuing ubuntustudio15:15
bluebirdokay15:15
holsteini would also try and stick to the defaults for a while15:15
bluebirdthanks again15:15
holsteini would try exerimenting with the live CD's15:15
holsteinboot those up, break things... try things there, and see what breaks and why15:15
holsteinanyways.. good luck!15:15
bluebirdokay15:16
Halexander9000Greetings from Eastern Europe, gentlehumans! I seem to have little problem involving OpenShot Video Editor and libmp3lame. Both of them are installed, the later has been recently compiled and installed manually by myself. Yet when I want to compile an Mp4, OpenShot doesn't seen to recognize that libmp3lame is installed. How do I check that I installed it properly and how do I make Openshot recognize it?17:24
