snadgeand maybe even a songlist object that contains a dynamically allocated array of these song objects which are like 1MB each :p00:00
snadgeive always hated object oriented programming.. not because i fail to understand it.. but because people who advocate it.. fail to understand how pointless it is ; )00:01
penguin42snadge: There are some bits of it as useful; unfortunately people tend to go mad with it and create zillions of objects00:02
snadgeyeah i guess one way of looking at it is.. most programmers are bad.. giving them more ways to shoot themselves in the foot, or create masterpieces of design that are woefully inefficient.. isnt necessarily the best idea00:03
snadgei guess open source fixes that.. as long as people are paying attention ;)00:04
penguin42snadge: It depends on the project to some extent - some are more careful about footprint/size/performance than others00:10
bagelshi all! Why can't I see/change assistive technologies options?00:11
bagelslike, I can't find the onscreen keyboard, I can't zoom in on my screen, anything.00:11
Daekdroombagels, power indicator (top right) > System Settings > Accessibility (last row)00:13
bagelscool! how can I learn more about this?00:14
penguin42try it!00:14
bagelsthere's a setting for keyboard shortcuts>zoom in, zoom out,00:14
bagelsis that for my monitor resolution?00:14
DaekdroomNope.00:14
bagelsbecause compiz desktop zoom doesn't do anything.00:15
DaekdroomThat is compiz's desktop zoom.00:15
bagelsright, it's more of a separate question00:17
bagelsbasically I have this:00:18
bagelsa netbook with a touchscreen, the Dell Inspiron Duo00:19
penguin42is that the thing that kind of flips in the lid?00:19
bagelswhen I flip it to tablet mode, I want to zoom in on the screen to push the X and - buttons with my pudgy fingers00:19
bagelspenguin42: yes! :D00:19
bagelsnow, I went to this website:00:20
bagelshold up, linking00:21
bagelshttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=165863500:22
bagelsscroll down to tablet recognition mode00:22
bagelsthere's keyboard shortcuts,00:23
bagelsso I was thinking I could set Keyboard Shortcuts for Zoom to opening and closing00:24
bagelsbut that doesn't work00:28
penguin42bagels: So I guess the thing to find out is whether the setkeycodes stuff has worked00:29
bagelswell i think it did, because they seem to have registered.00:29
briankba program I compiled yesterday doesn't show up in unity search. I want to add it to the unity bar as a shortcut icon, how can I do that?00:29
penguin42bagels: 'registered'?00:30
bagelsit's just that nothing zooming works00:30
bagelsyeah, penguin42 when I click the keyboard shortcut to set a new binding, it comes up when I open/close the lid as Launch 1 and Launch 200:31
penguin42ok00:31
bagelspenguin42: however I can't get any kind of key binding to make zoom work, it's like there's only one resolution00:31
penguin42bagels: I'm not sure how those zooms work00:32
bagelspenguin42: I wouldn't mind just a way to bind a command that makes my resolution go bigger.00:32
penguin42bagels: It might be worth checking if you're running Unity or Unity2d00:33
bagelspenguin42: does that make sense?  I just want to go from 1366x600 (or something like that) to like 800x[something 16:9]00:33
bagelspenguin42: unity 2d00:33
penguin42bagels: Hmm well I think you could do that with xrandr - but there's probably a better way00:34
bagelsdo you think d is preventing it from happening/00:34
=== diegovieiraeti is now known as revolts
bagelsI had some esoteric zoom in/out app in my unity launcher that worked a few months ago,00:34
bagelsand I think I was running 3d00:34
penguin42bagels: I don't know, but I wouldn't be too surprised if those zoom things are done with some GL stuff in unity and maybe not done in 2d (or just a bug?)00:35
bagelspenguin42 ^00:35
bagelspenguin42: how do i switch to 3D?00:35
penguin42bagels: Not sure, it might have taken a dislike to your graphics card and decided against it00:35
bagelspenguin42: I manually installed 2d00:36
penguin42do you get an option when you login on the lightdm stuff as you enter your password00:37
bagelspenguin42: it automatically logs me in00:37

roothorickboth empathy and pidgin are utterly worthless for voice calling over Google Talk, I'm in the process of filing bugs right now05:21
roothorickwhat else should I try?L05:21
ChogyDangoogle's plugin?05:21
roothorickChogyDan: then I have to leave Gmail open in a browser tab at all times and don't get visual notifications05:29
roothoricknot exactly ideal05:30
roothorickactually, the biggest problem with that is I have to go hunting around to find Gmail when I hear the ring05:30
roothorickat that point I might as well just answer it with my cell05:30
roothorickI want a setup that, upon an incoming call, presents me with a dialog I can click to start the conversation right then and there05:32
roothorickPidgin gives the popup, but apparently can't connect the call properly05:33
patr|ckroothorick: i can so relate to what you wrote05:34
patr|ck(in the first part)05:34
roothorickmy overall impression with Voice is "very, very rough"05:35
patr|ckwhy some people do voice and video conferencing when they do not have to is a myth to me tho.05:35
roothorickeven on Windows it's awkward and full of gotchas05:35
roothorickseems like, if you're not using an Android device to interface with it, you have to use a browser, with all the limitations that come with that05:35
patr|ckmaybe i find clue about this some day :D05:35
patr|cki prefer letter, mail or FAX.05:36
roothorickyeah, the main reason I started looking into Voice is because I want to send/receive SMS without having to pay for an actual SMS connection05:36
patr|ckah!05:36
roothorickworks great on Android. Windows? Browser only. No notification on new messages. Linux? Same.05:37
patr|ckthats the trouble, i can see it.05:37
patr|ckwhat exactly would you do about it if you could make wishes as much as you like?05:38
roothorickone, integrate Voice SMS with Talk. There's no excuse, these should be connected at the hip.05:38
patr|ckhmmm, interesting05:39
roothorickI should be able to send/receive SMS through Voice via Pidgin or Empathy connected to Talk05:39
patr|cksend SMS by your own voice?05:39
roothoricknonono05:39
patr|ckthats what you desire?05:39
patr|ckoh.05:39
roothorickGoogle Voice does SMS stuff05:39
roothorickbut you have to go through Voice to send/receive SMS05:39
roothorickit's not connected to Talk in any way05:39
patr|ckmaybe these engineers got reason which i dont know about yet... hmmmm05:40
patr|ckthey drink lots of "smart water" you know05:40
patr|ckmore than me05:40
roothoricktwo, there really needs to be a standardized interface for connecting third-party clients to Voice05:40
patr|ckoh that gets tricky05:41
patr|ckthird-party is like london tea party if ...05:41
patr|cklets say -05:42
patr|ckjust a fictive example:05:42
patr|ckIRC, E-Mail, Facebook and Twitter are already well connected the way they are, would your wish bring mess to too many people's lifes if they had the same wish?05:42
roothorickhonestly?05:43
roothorickthird-party IM clients have made things simpler for me05:43
patr|cksimpler how?05:43
roothorickIn 2002 it was "I have AIM and Yahoo" "Oh I only have MSN" "Well shit now I have to install yet another thing"05:43
roothoricknow I can make 12 different accounts and consolidate them all in one list in Pidgin05:44
patr|cki start to love this "manual" kommunikation more and more05:44
patr|ckit helps with variation05:44
patr|ckit helps with concideration05:44

ThomasBoxley:|15:42

Volkodavyofel: now I removed skype:i386 and skype:bin and skype will not install15:45

mongoJanC: yes, but not everyone is limited to that, and thats why I qualified about needing the core for media decoding19:53
mongoJanC: it is anoying when you have 10Gbe :)19:53
JanCbut I doubt it matters for streaming to VLC (VLC won't be able to keep up with a stream that huge either)19:54

jinjorgelinux-image-3.2.0-21-generic is already the newest version.21:26
UrBhttp://i43.tinypic.com/vxopky.png - like that - only languages I had installed was english and finnish21:27
UrBI know how to fix that, but I'd rather not go through it at random times without understanding what causes that21:27

glosolilol21:38
trismjinjorge: if you don't see the kernel on reboot, my only other thought is that you have grub from another installed os21:38
trismjinjorge: on my test desktop that is how I have it set up, so I have to occasionally remember to update-grub on the other system21:39
jinjorgetrism: Only running Ubuntu 12.04 on this computer21:40
trismjinjorge: although if that were the case, I would think it would be listed at the end of the update-grub output21:40
trismjinjorge: yeah, odd, try rebooting and seeing if the kernel is there now21:40
trismjinjorge: make sure to hold shift so the grub screen shows up21:40
jinjorgetrism: I'll give that a try. need to run to a meeting21:41
trismjinjorge: wait, menu.lst, is this an upgrade from a version prior to 10.0421:41
jinjorgetrism: I'll let you know what I find21:41
trismjinjorge: alright21:41
jinjorgetrism: what's that about menu.lst?21:42
trismjinjorge: in the output is says: Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst21:42
trismjinjorge: menu.lst was used with the old grub, which hasn't been installed by default since, jaunty I think? grub2 uses /boot/grub/grub.cfg21:43
jinjorgetrism: this was a clean install of 12.04 alpha21:43
trismjinjorge: that is strange then, hmm21:44
jinjorgethere was a time a little while back where I had to edit the grub file to boot to the login screen21:45
jinjorgetrism: it was booting the the grub list21:45
jinjorgetrism: there is the potential that I screwed something up when messing around with that21:46
trismjinjorge: possible, try: sudo update-grub2; when you get a chance21:48
dakiraCan any 12.04 users please confirm this bug so that it gets fixed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/971927 ;)21:50
ubottuLaunchpad bug 971927 in compiz (Ubuntu) "Compiz window-management plugins only affect windows on current viewport" [Undecided,New]21:50
UrBI haven't selected either german or chinese language support, but still they appear there seemingly impossible to remove -> http://i40.tinypic.com/291ixsm.png21:53
UrBanyone else with similar behaviour21:54
Edericodear all, is it possible to revert to the previous ALT+TAB system in 12.04, i.e. I want all windows to appear in the window selector and not just those that are present in the particular workspace22:11
trismEderico: in ccsm, unity plugin/switcher tab/uncheck bias alt-tab to prefer windows on the current viewport22:16
trismEderico: or just use ctrl+alt+tab to do that22:16
dakiratrism: what about super+w (scale initiate_all) just showing the windows on the current workspace instead of all workspaces. Any idea how to get that back to the old behavior?22:19
Edericotrism: Thanks a lot, I opted for the first option, but good to know I can change if I feel like it22:20
trismdakira: not sure, I took a look when you posted the bug, but didn't notice a way to change it22:20
dakiratrism: but you can confirm it?22:21
Edericocan this channel be used for suggestions to improve Ubuntu 12.04? As I'd like a particular change to HUD and would like to suggest it22:21
dakiraEderico: try #ubuntu-unity22:22
penguin42Ederico: Changes to 12.04 are very unlikely to happen this late in the game unless it's pretty grim22:22
trismdakira: yes it happens here too, but I'm not sure about confirming the bug, since I recall older bugs about only showing the windows on the current workspace, so I don't know if this is on purpose or not (and the ccsm strings just need to be updated)22:23
Edericopenguin42: ok, I got it, let's put it this way, it is a change to Ubuntu's new HUD in general not just for 12.0422:23
Edericodakira: thanks22:23
OffGridOps11.10/12.04 Upgrade:  Lost power while 12.04 was installing.  All downloaded but did not install.  Accessed terminal via ctrl-alt-f1 and see my pix and such.  How do I get the install process back on track?  Thanx!22:23
penguin42Ederico: Ah OK22:23
penguin42OffGridOps: Nasty; you can try doing an apt-get -f install and see what happens22:24
OffGridOpsK doing that now...22:24
glosoliis there any way to turn off that Tooltips thing being rendering alongside desktop wallpaper colors ?22:25
Edericonow that I remember, I have another problem. If I'm not mistaken in the user login screen the wallpaper for each user should show up as a background. I only have one user, and it is not showing up, I get the default background22:25
dakiratrism: well, if it's that, it would essentially mean that the functionality to initiate scale on all windows has been taken out of compiz. you could at least hit the "affects me" button ;)22:25
OffGridOpsmust manually run sudo dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem do i just type that in?22:25
penguin42OffGridOps: Yeh22:25
OffGridOpsTrying it --- thanx for your replies BTW22:26
penguin42OffGridOps: No problem; to be honest depending when the power went you could have a real mess on your hands22:26
OffGridOpsspitting out a bunch of stuff "setting up" so looks good.  It had downloaded everything and was in the install stage22:26
bitplane-hi, my panel is 100% transparent. I may have messed it up in ccsm. I tried compiz --reset but it didn't fix it22:27
bitplane-same applies to HUD22:28
jbichaEderico: Ctrl+Alt+Tab switches between windows from all workspaces, it's documented in the help that was just updated today :)22:28
dakiraOffGridOps: when it's done run apt-get dist-upgrade again and look for more messages22:29
OffGridOpsOK will do I am gonna stay logged in here --- kinda like a kid in the storm hanging out w/the folks ;) ---and advise!22:29
trismdakira: actually, may not need to, see bug 93377622:30
ubottuLaunchpad bug 933776 in compiz (Ubuntu) "Unity overrides compiz scale plugin behavior settings" [Low,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/93377622:30
jinjorgetrism: rebooted and still running 3.2.0.1822:30
trismjinjorge: weird, can you pastebin /boot/grub/grub.cfg ?22:31
OffGridOpsConfiguration file '/etc/gnome/defaults.list' Wants me to Intall the pack maintainers vers, keep current ver, start shell show differences.  Recommends I keep current version22:31
dakiratrism: good find, thanks!22:32
bitplane-aha! "no blur" in unity's ccsm plugin means "completely transparent"22:32
OffGridOpsApplied Default action22:33
OffGridOpsInstallation finished.  No error reported.  Cleaning up and updating it says dealing with fonts22:35
jinjorgetrism:http://pastebin.com/KhWa1zBy22:36
dakiraOffGridOps: I'd usually go with the packagers version if you don't remember personally changing the file to something else22:37
jinjorgetrism: I see that 3.2.0.18 is the latest version in the file22:37
OffGridOpsExcellent!  thanx!22:37
trismjinjorge: yeah, try: sudo update-grub2; maybe you have grub legacy installed as well for some reason?22:37
trismjinjorge: this time it should hopefully say something like: Generating grub.cfg... instead of found menu.lst22:39
jinjorgetrism: and /etc/default/grub file looks like http://pastebin.com/aPnnvmSL22:39
jinjorgetrism: jeremiah@jeremiah-fc:~$ sudo update-grub222:40
jinjorgesudo: update-grub2: command not found22:40
jinjorgejeremiah@jeremiah-fc:~$22:40
trismjinjorge: apt-cache policy grub grub-common grub2 grub2-common22:41
jinjorgetrism: should I run sudo apt-get install grub222:41
OffGridOpsusr /share /app-install /desktop / kde-telepethy-sendfile...desktop could not be installed correctly.  A bug should be considered for report or something like that.  The rest of the install continuing22:42
jinjorgetrism: http://pastebin.com/BHTd4xwt22:42
OffGridOpslibclass-singleton-perl is in a very bad inconsistent state your should reinstall it before attempting configuration22:44
trismOffGridOps: see bug 940093 for that problem with software-center (although I suspect it may be against the wrong package)22:45
ubottuLaunchpad bug 940093 in ktp-send-file (Ubuntu) "'/usr/share/app-install/desktop/kde-telepathy-send-file:kde4__ktp-send-file.desktop' could not be read correctly" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/94009322:45
trismjinjorge: yeah I would: sudo apt-get purge grub; sudo apt-get install grub2;22:47
trismjinjorge: since it is definitely using /boot/grub/grub.cfg22:47
jinjorgetrism: will do. give me a sec22:47
OffGridOpsErrors were encountered while processing libclass-singleton-perl   It has ended and I am at the command prompt.  Is there a way to fix this or should I now do the run apt-get dist- upgrade22:48
tomodachiim having problems net installing ubuntu 1204 here, the log on the machine to install states cant open /tmp/net-retriever-5206-dedplicate/* no such file or directory22:49
jinjorgetrism: brb22:50
tomodachiit seems to work from internet mirrors, im mountint the install iso through loopback and sharing it as a http mirror for my install22:50
OffGridOpsI guess it has run its course.  It cannot resolve anything that is us.archive.ubuntu.com  bunch of failed to fetch stuff.  im gonna try to reboot and see what happens22:54
jessieSo Amarok 2.5 should have the transcoding features, right?22:57
jessieWrong channel...22:59

meerkatsis there going to be a fully functioning gnome in 12.04? with fully I mean it wont be like 11.10's fallback, with missing options in the main desktop bar23:39
pangolinmeerkats, the fallback is Unity2d23:43
meerkatsso you dont have plans to support gnome anymore23:43
penguin42meerkats: The important distinction is Gnome *2* - you can use Gnome *3*23:44
meerkatsgoogling that23:44
pangolingnome3 is fully supported23:45
penguin42meerkats: The old Gnome was Gnome 2, on Precise you can use Unity, or Gnome3 (or KDE or XFCE etc) - but Gnome2 isn't there23:45
pangolinyou can use gnome-shell which runs on top of gnome323:45
pangolin!notunity23:45
ubottuUbuntu 11.10 uses GNOME 3 with the !unity shell by default.  To use GNOME Shell instead, install the "gnome-shell" package and investigate "gnome-tweak-tool".  For GNOME Fallback mode, which is similar to GNOME 2, install "gnome-panel". Both packages will place entries in the Sessions dropdown. Using Natty? See !classic23:45
meerkatsok, gnome 3 doesnt have categorized menus like gnome2 or xfce, does it?23:45
* penguin42 doesn't know - haven't played with it23:46
pangolinme either23:46
meerkatsok23:46
pangolinI like my Kubuntu23:46
penguin42meerkats: I switched to Kubuntu on one machine and Mint on another23:46
meerkatsim leaving ubuntu because unity, while eyecandy, doe not have categorized indexes, which are relally important for me23:46
meerkatsIm thinking about partitioning with xubuntu and mint penguin4223:47
penguin42meerkats: Nod, If you use Mint, the MATE set of packages are forward ported gnome 2 (with some name changes)23:47
meerkatsa...23:48
meerkatsthx23:48
meerkatsi've heard good review of mint though23:48
meerkatsreviews23:48
penguin42meerkats: The version derived from Precise should arrive in May, but will still have MATE23:49
meerkatsok23:49
meerkatsim removing lubuntu (have references to it while logging out) with the last command from http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce, why does it have to INSTALL 3 libraries?23:50
meerkatscrap, i removed chromium23:51
penguin42meerkats: It's possible that one of the things is an alternative to something else that will then get renambled23:51
