=== sattu94 is now known as satyanash [06:00] I recently did a clean install of win7 and ubuntu on a 64bit samsung ultralight notebook, the ubuntu install must have corrupted the MBR( my symptoms match some sammy forums). I tried to use the samsung recovery to return to windows to the original state, and now it won't start at all. all of the links for Samsung Admin Recovery tools point to megaupload, which is now defunct as per FBI and grand jury indictment. Can someone guide me throu [06:00] thanks in advance [06:01] f4 recovery doesnt work, just puts it in an endless loop where the screen keeps on flickering [06:01] I confirmed the partitions with gparted from a LiveUSB [06:08] what happens when you turn it on? [06:49] philipballew: sorry my gnome was having some trouble had to restart, this dell mini is getting old [06:50] when I boot up the sammy, i see the boot screen with f2 and f4 options, but if I dont have a liveUSB inserted, it goes to a blank screen that keeps blinking black to light black [06:50] if I press f2 i get the bios [06:50] if I press f4, its the same symtoms [06:51] I reinstalled ubuntu with once already, and it let me boot the samsung recovery solutions 5 from the grub2 menu (calls it windows vista boot loader) but upon completion of the full recovery, its the same problem [06:52] I need to fix the MBR according to sammynetbook.com forums, but the problem is the file they suggest to download Samsung Admin Tools was on megaupload, which is now blocked by the FBI [06:53] thats lame [06:53] lets look at this [06:53] you need to use grub as your boot loader you know [06:55] http://www.sammynetbook.com/forum/threads/13194-NC-10-recovery-failure---constant-rebooting [06:57] yeah i guess that is one of the options, but when it comes to actually using the prompt to edit lines in the boot sequence HD 0,0 0,1 etc, that is a bit out of my league, i was having a hard time following the sticky's instructions [06:57] why dont you just boot with a live usb and reinstall grub by chrooting into your internal drive [06:58] I need to get ubuntu completely off of this machine, can it get me that result eventually? its a bit complicated, but Id like to sell this machine to someone who doesnt want linux at all, just wants the original system in place [06:58] they want the win 7 starter premium [06:58] well your gonna have to do things that might be hard, but reading will be required [06:58] working again [06:58] they? [06:58] the guy that would buy it from me [06:59] your selling it? [06:59] make them do it? [06:59] thats not the deal [06:59] the deal is that if windows 7 works again, then he'll buy it for the original price [07:00] then set up windows 7 ans install ubuntu [07:00] he's a friend who doesn't fancy ubuntu, he's using some special voice recognition software that only works on windows [07:00] he doesnt know linux at all [07:00] anyway, windows 7 wont setup [07:00] thats the problem [07:01] i only know a little [07:01] and you need windows help here? [07:01] no [07:01] I just need to get the MBR to work again [07:01] ubuntu must have corrupted it [07:01] reinstall grub via chroot [07:02] off of a liveusb that can do grub2dos? [07:02] grub2dos. why are you using that? [07:03] you shoyld be using grub [07:03] im not [07:03] Im just unclear what you mean by via chroot [07:04] !grub2 [07:04] GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10) [07:05] happy reading :) [07:06] thanks, but youre sure this will solve my problem of restoring mbr and getting my original system back? [07:06] via f4 system recovery? [07:07] maybe. i dont really know what your problem is. but thats god to read [07:07] its 12 here. [07:07] so not gonna mess with it [07:07] ok, thanks for pointing me in the right direction [09:00] how do I update my grub-install to grub2 version, I need to make a grub2 bootable usb, and right now the machine I have runs 8.04 [09:00] thanks in advance [09:01] is it just two commands: apt-get update and then apt-get install grub-install? [09:07] just tried, that didn't work, can anyone help here? thanks! === JonathanDog is now known as JonathanD [10:53] can someone help me interpret these instructions to get my MBR working again, trying to get a dual boot out of my 64bit samsung ultralight netbook messed up my f4 recovery and my symptoms are exactly the same as this: http://www.sammynetbook.com/forum/threads/13251-Story-about-a-samsung-N210-03ES-the-F4-and-MBR-the-recovery-solution-4-0-0-42-and-HIS-admintool?p=100629&viewfull=1#post100629 [10:53] ? [10:53] thanks in advance [10:54] now when I turn on my new notebook, i get nothing [10:54] goes from the boot screen with f2/f4 options to a bricked screen [10:54] I can still run a USB stick though, I just dont know what to do first, Im completely lost [10:55] im afraid of further damaging my harddrive [10:55] thanks to all who are here to help us newbs! =) [10:56] clarkthehardy910, I can not answer your questions; I'm sorry. If no one answers here, in the next few minuted you might try #ubuntu channel; there's about 1,500 people there now. [10:56] minutes, even. [10:56] clarkthehardy910: what was the question. Sorry i missed it [11:00] duanedesign: I need to recover MBR on a system that I screwed up, I put 10.04 on it, partitioned everything well, everything was working fine when I decided to start over again so I thought just booting into the Samsung Recovery Solution 5 would do the trick, I tried to do the full recovery, but now it's stuck on boot, after the f2 f4 options menu disappears it just goes into a bricked loop screen back-lit black to black [11:00] I think this guy found the solution, but I dont know how to do what he's doing: http://www.sammynetbook.com/forum/threads/13251-Story-about-a-samsung-N210-03ES-the-F4-and-MBR-the-recovery-solution-4-0-0-42-and-HIS-admintool?p=100629&viewfull=1#post100629 [11:01] ive got 3 computers to work with right now: 1) windows xp, 2) Dell Netbook with 8.04 3) my screwed up new ultralight sammy, which I can get to run the liveUSB again [11:02] duanedesign: are you still there? you've helped me in the past, with my dell mini, thanks for being around still [11:03] clarkthehardy910: do you have Windows on the netbook? [11:03] or just Ubuntu? [11:03] or both :) ? [11:04] nope [11:04] just Ubuntu [11:04] i've confirmed with gparted that all the partitions are still there [11:04] on the sammy [11:05] but while trying tinker with it, I've reformatted the linux partition back to ntfs just to see if that was the problem windows had with it when trying to reboot anew [11:05] which didnt make anything better [11:06] I could reinstall the 10.04 LTS, ive tried this once already, and it got grub2 to work again [11:07] but I was in a hurry to get it restored back to original configuration, I didnt understand a lot of things, so i used the grub2 to boot the samsung recovery (labeled by grub as windows vista boot loader), then reproduced the same problem after running the recovery a second time [11:08] I wanted to get expert advice before I tinkered any further [11:08] dont want to toast a new ultraslim HD [11:10] duanedesign: the netbook is just ubuntu [11:11] ok [11:12] clarkthehardy910: i would use boot-repair [11:12] * duanedesign gets link [11:12] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair [11:13] download the CD, burn the iso to disk, boot from the CD, follow instructions on screen. [11:14] will it work from LiveUSB? [11:14] duanedesign: I dont have any cd drives [11:14] yes [11:15] duanedesign: thanks so much! so after I do this should the windows MBR work or will I have to reinstall a linux distro? [11:19] clarkthehardy910: their are advanced options, including restore a Windows-compatible MBR [11:21] It is pretty easy to use, and always beeen able to fix my boot issues [11:21] hopefully you will have the same experience [11:27] duanedesign: thanks so much! [11:29] np [11:37] duanedesign: one more question, any idea how this will effect the F4 system recovery utility? [11:38] could it get it to work again? f4 is supposed to allow the system to boot to Samsung Recovery Solution which allows the user restore to previous backups of windows [11:38] or to the original configuration [11:44] hmmm, i am not sure [11:45] i would not think it would be an issue...but that is just a seat of the pants opinion. I ddo not have anything to back up that opinion [11:45] ok, thanks for your help [11:45] =) [13:02] hello [13:02] is there any chance to install my graphic card driver (Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family) in Ubuntu 11.10? === yofel_ is now known as yofel === BufferOverflow is now known as Unit193 === angela-android is now known as nothingspecial === Draugen_ is now known as Draugen
