matt_ok i just installed ubuntu. everytime i boot up my computer it takes me to this purple screen with a few options to pick. i can either pick: boot linux 3.0.0-17 generic. boot linux 3.0.0-17 recovery. boot previouse versions or memory test. if i boot 3.0.0-17 generic it just goes black screen forever and i have to turn it off. i have to go to preiviouse versions where it says boot 3.0.0-12 generic. and then again it will take01:35
JoseeAntonioRmatt_: Is it 11.10 or 12.04?01:36
matt_11.1001:36
JoseeAntonioRDid you MD5 test the .iso you downloaded?01:37
matt_yea01:37
JoseeAntonioRI suppose hashs were the same, right?01:37
matt_yes01:37
JoseeAntonioRHave you installed via WUBI?01:38
matt_im pretty sure01:39
matt_actually maybe not because my frined did it while on his mac01:39
JoseeAntonioRWell, if you have installed it via WUBI, my recommendation would be to delete WUBI and reinstall via the LiveCD01:40
matt_well my friend burned me CD on his mac01:41
JoseeAntonioRWUBI is told to cause various problems to users.01:41
JoseeAntonioRDo you have a Windows partition?01:41
matt_no as of right now all i have is ubuntu on it. no windows at all01:42
JoseeAntonioRSo, please tell me, is this happening since the first time you booted Ubuntu?01:43
matt_yes and i have tried reinstalling 3 times01:44
bodhizazen'lo you all01:44
JoseeAntonioRHello, bodhizazen :)01:44

shawn186is their a way to fix my boot screen for ubuntu 10.4? it was high res on my native resolution, but now after installing compiz fusion settings manager, its gone to a low resolution01:48
bodhizazenshawn186, boot screen has to do with your video driver, did you install the nvidia or ati drivers ?01:50
shawn186i installed the ati drivers01:51
shawn186proprietary i think01:51
bodhizazenremove proprietary or live with boot screen01:53
bodhizazenBesides 10.04 is sort of long in the tooth, 12.04 would be better01:53
bodhizazenespecially on desktop01:53
shawn186umm01:55
shawn186i tried 12, and i did not like it at all01:55
shawn186its inflamated01:55
bodhizazenyea, yea, old news , move along01:56
bodhizazen10.04 will be at EOL soon enought, then what ?01:56
bodhizazenthis is a support channel, troll somewhere else ;)01:57
shawn186well 10.4 LTS is the last of something i like about ubuntu01:58
shawn186an important quality01:58
bodhizazenIf you do not like unity, classic, gnome-shell, kde, xfce, lxde, *box, awwesomwm, gnome 2 is dead01:58
shawn186i tried classic in it, the top screen bar was crapped up, and the task bar was buggy01:59
bodhizazeng2 is dead, get over it01:59
Unit193Gave a longer list of other things to try, not just classic.02:00
shawn186gnome was the best02:01
shawn186overall02:01
Unit193Gnome2 is no longer in active dev.02:02
shawn186well, what is replacing it?02:02
JoseeAntonioRGnome302:03
shawn186does turboboost work in ubuntu?02:04
shawn186i run uname -r and it says unknown02:13
shawn186doesn't even know what processor02:13
bob_hi i recently downloaded ubuntu and when i went to playa  youtube video through my speakers no sound came out. any help02:13
JoseeAntonioRbob_: Ok. I think this is a common problem. Can you please try muting your PC when it has no headphones, and then connect the headphones please?02:13
bob_ok did that02:14
JoseeAntonioRbob_: Did sound work now?02:14
bob_nope02:15
shawn186err not -r, thats kernal type, i mean uname -p02:16
bob_any other options?02:16
JoseeAntonioRbob_: Yes. Please, open the sound configuration panel.02:17
bob_ok its open02:18
JoseeAntonioRThen, on the Output tab, tell me what does it say in Connector.02:18
bob_analog headphones02:18
JoseeAntonioRPlease, change that to Analog Speakers.02:18
JoseeAntonioRbob_: Then, try playing sounds.02:18
bob_still nothing02:19
JoseeAntonioRDo sounds play from other programs?02:20
bob_not through headphones on anything but through the speakers its fine02:22
bob_anything else?02:24
JoseeAntonioRbob_: I don't know what else can you do, I had that problem and fixed it that way. Maybe another person in the team knows the solution for it02:24
bob_yea ill try and come back later02:25
JoseeAntonioRbob_: Wait a second, once you select Analog Speakers, you unmuted the sound?02:25
JoseeAntonioRUrgh.02:25
bodhizazendid matt__ ever come back ?02:27
JoseeAntonioRbodhizazen: Nope, he didn't02:29
bodhizazenshawn186, you mean uname -m ?02:33
bodhizazenuname will show you if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit02:34
shawn186that tells the architecture02:34
shawn186i know that as much02:34
shawn186i mean the processor02:34
shawn186-p02:34
bodhizazenif you are running 32 bit Ubuntu on a 64 bit processor, it shows 32 bit02:34
shawn186i am running x86_6402:35
bodhizazenlscpi02:35
bodhizazencat /proc/cpuinfo02:35
shawn186well lspci filled quite a bit02:36
shawn186there we go02:37
shawn186cpuinfo helps02:37
shawn186why does cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i mhz return cpu MHz as :933.000?02:38
bodhizazencat /proc/cpuinfo | pastebinit02:41
shawn186http://pastebin.com/LDkyzwhA02:46
bodhizazenthanks ..02:46
* bodhizazen looks02:46
bodhizazenYour cpu is capable of 1.6 GHz and is idling at 933 Mhz02:47
shawn186no02:47
shawn186my processor is capable of 2.8 GHz02:47
shawn186idle at 1.602:47
shawn186in windows02:48
shawn186is their a way to get that same performance out of ubuntu?02:48
zeekHi everyone, need help installing java6 sdk in ubuntu 10.10; yes i've tried "sudo apt-get install sun-java6"02:52
shawn186so with the ATI Catalyst Control Center in linux, is their a way to restore my boot screen back to high res?02:53
Unit193Isn't 1010 EOL?02:53
Unit193zeek: sun-java isn't being kept up due to the license, and that's an outdated version as well.02:54
bodhizazenshawn186, no, you have to remove Catalyst02:55
zeekWhat would you recommend for java development using eclipse02:57
shawn186oh :(02:57
JoseeAntonioRzeek: Try with sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre02:57
shawn186bodhizazen,  what good will that do me?02:57
bodhizazenrestore you boot screen =02:57
shawn186and for the graphics benifit?02:58
bodhizazenshawn186, have you filed a bug report with ati ?02:59
bodhizazenAti made and maintains the catylist driver02:59
shawn186is the 4650 supported anymore?02:59
zeekJoseeAntoniR I udnerstand that version of java is not the complete version02:59
bodhizazenthe catylist drive is incompatible with the boot screen02:59
bodhizazenas it is a closed source drive you are using, what do you want me to do about it ?03:00
bodhizazenfile a bug report with ati03:00
shawn186forget it :(03:00
bodhizazen4650 is supported http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Hardware03:01
bodhizazenthe cpu frequency you are seeing is likely a bug03:02
JoseeAntonioRzeek: Well, as far as I know that's the only version available in the repos. You would have to search in the java webpage.03:02
bodhizazenwhat kernel is it ?03:02
shawn1862.6.32-40-generic03:02
shawn186here we go http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n436/shawn146/Screenshot-1.png03:05
shawn186my cpu frequency03:05
shawn186wish i could get the 2.8 GHz out of it :(03:05
bodhizazenwhat happens with 12.04 beta ?03:06
bodhizazen2.6.32 is sort of an old kernel03:06
shawn186its LTS03:06
bodhizazento be honest, I think your best bet is 12.04, use kubuntu or if you like the feel of gnome 2, xubuntu03:06
bodhizazen12.04 is LTS, yes03:07
shawn186i don't want any derivatives03:07
bodhizazenthe file a bug report against the 12.04 beta 203:07
bodhizazenYou have relatively new hardware03:07
shawn186true03:08
shawn1862010 hardware03:08
bodhizazenyou are sort of building your own coffin03:08
shawn186what do you mean03:08
bodhizazengnome 2 is dead03:08
bodhizazenand you refuse to move on03:08
bodhizazentake your pick - you have several optiosn03:09
bodhizazenor stay with an old kernel and take the performance hit03:09
shawn186well i talked to a couple friends, i will upgrade03:09
bodhizazen12.04 has unity, classic, kde, xfce, lxde, fluxbox, openbox, list goes on an on03:09
shawn186as long as it looks like my top bar03:10
shawn186with Applications Places and System tabs03:10
bodhizazenIf you have problems with 12.04, file a bug report03:10
bodhizazenYour complaint is sort of like complaining that you do not like Windows 7, you prefer windows 9803:11
bodhizazenWhy will windows 98 not run my 64 bit software ?03:11
bodhizazenYou are stuck in the past03:11
shawn186o.o03:12
shawn186your a bit over the edge there03:12
bodhizazennot really03:12
shawn186you are tooo dramatic03:12
bodhizazenyou are being stubborn03:12
shawn18610.4 was 201103:12
shawn186why do you say taht03:12
shawn186*that03:12
bodhizazenI find it hard to believe 12.04 does not offer you an acceptable DE03:12
bodhizazenLinux develops is much more rapid then windows03:13
shawn186DE?03:13
shawn186bodhizazen,  i agree03:13
shawn186i am converting to linux03:13
bodhizazenDesktop Environment - KDE, gnome, xfce, ....03:13
shawn186ah03:13
shawn186i will learn03:13
bodhizazenIf you like g2, xfce is your best bet03:14
shawn186but the gnome 2 look is classy and simple, not shiney or eye-candied up03:14
bodhizazenso go for fluxbox then03:14
bodhizazenor lxde03:14
bodhizazenhttp://news.softpedia.com/news/Xubuntu-12-04-Beta-2-Screenshot-Tour-261682.shtml03:15
bodhizazenhttp://news.softpedia.com/news/Lubuntu-12-04-Beta-2-Screenshot-Tour-261824.shtml03:15
bodhizazenThe linux kernel is 3.x now, so if you are having a problem with your i7, you need to at least try a more modern kernel03:16
shawn186k03:17
bodhizazenat the minimum , boot 12.04 beta, try xfce, and cat/proc/cpuinfo03:18
bodhizazenyou can boot a live Cd (flash drive) and test it b4 u install03:19
shawn186upon using compiz in ubuntu, why do i see cuts when moving the window?03:19
shawn186same way i installed 10.4 :)03:19
bodhizazencrappy closed source driver ?03:19
shawn186does ati have a good driver?03:19
bodhizazenOne thing in the open source community, we can not do anything with closed source code03:20
bodhizazenyou have to bring those complaints to ati03:20
zeek/irchelp/03:20
shawn186oh03:20
bodhizazenor nvidia or intel03:20
bodhizazenwe can show you how to install the binary linux driver, but if ati does not open source the driver, what can we do to fix it ?03:21
bodhizazenkde is nice too - http://news.softpedia.com/news/Kubuntu-12-04-LTS-Alpha-2-Screenshot-Tour-250502.shtml03:22
shawn186was just askin..03:22
shawn186no need to rub it in..03:22
bodhizazenYou will get much ruder responses then I have given you ;)03:22
shawn186why isn't there peace in an open community?03:23
bodhizazenTry filing a bug report on the ATI driver on Launchpad03:23
* bodhizazen stands back to watch the flames03:23
shawn186o.o03:23
bodhizazenshawn186, what do you mean ?03:23
shawn186well i found the grub area03:24
shawn186#GRUB_GFXMODE=1600x90003:24
shawn186i changed it from 640x48003:24
bodhizazendid that fix you boot screen resolution ?03:25
shawn186i haven't rebooted it03:25
bodhizazensudo update-grub03:25
bodhizazenreboot03:25
shawn186i always look for a positive outcome03:25
shawn186negative never helps03:25
holsteini tend to lean more towards realistic these days... but positive wont hurt anything03:26
bodhizazenwell, you really can not apply that reasoning to an outcome when asking the open source community to support closed source drivers03:27
bodhizazenIt is sort of like mixing water and oil03:27
shawn186i wasn't asking anyone to do anything03:27
shawn186i was asking if it existed yet03:28
shawn186ima noob03:28
bodhizazenfile a support request on Microsoft asking them to support chain loading grub 203:28
bodhizazenor LUKS03:28
bodhizazenor ask Microsoft when they are going to support brtfs03:28
bodhizazenoil and water don't mix03:29
bodhizazenhttp://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html03:29
bodhizazenshawn186, you bought your computer with windows pre-installed ?03:30
bodhizazenNext time, buy an i7 with Linux pre-installed03:30
bodhizazenall your hardware will work out of the box, just like it does with windows 703:30
bodhizazenNot try installing windows 703:30
bodhizazentry finding all the windows drivers you need =)03:31
bodhizazenIf you want "positive" outcomes, you need to do your homework when purchasing hardware03:32
bodhizazenyou know this03:32
bodhizazenyou do not run OSX on a windows box ?03:32
bodhizazensame with Linux or BSD03:32
bodhizazenyou can not pound a square peg through a round hole =)03:33
bodhizazenWell, not easily03:33
shawn186bodhizazen, its a refurb my dad got me back in 2010 for 120003:36
shawn186a slight splurge, not ever gonna happen again03:36
bodhizazenbuild one =)03:36
shawn186when i get a job03:37
bodhizazenLook at 12.04, see if your hardware is better supported, most likely it is03:40
bodhizazenand if so, decide if you are so stuck in gnome 2 you are willing to give it up03:40
bodhizazenor decide you are so stuck with your cpu frequency to learn to love unity or the DE of your choice03:40
bodhizazenyou have options03:41
holsteinXFCE is a nice gnome2 alternative03:41
shawn186bodhizazen, we just talked about that buddy03:42
shawn186i said i will definately upgrade03:42
bodhizazencome back to this channel running 12.04 live and we can take another look03:42
bodhizazenI would not upgrade without testing03:42
Unit19312 is still in beta. :P03:43
Unit193But yeah, there have been some great impovments there.03:44
Unit193Some improvements as well.03:44
bodhizazenalthough there are no guarantees, there have been great efforts to keep 12.04 as stable as possible and I do not have any reservations advising it at this time03:45
bodhizazenIt has been very stable03:45
bodhizazenas dev releases go03:45
bodhizazenUnit193, people still install the 12.04 alpha spin I made a while back, do a full upgrade, and are happy with the results03:46
* bodhizazen looks at date03:47
Unit193Yep, was just making a friendly reminder.03:48
bodhizazenbuilt my 12.04 alpha Dec 24, 2011103:48
Unit193....That's in the future! 0_003:48
Unit193;)03:49
bodhizazengah - back to the future03:49
