JohnBealesHey Guys, what's the best and/or easiest, (hopefully they're both the same), to get Lubuntu running on EC2? Ideally I don't want to have to fire up a full ubuntu install and strip everything out, unless it's super easy to do, (I'm not a linux genius, by any stretch)?01:23
Unit193!mini01:23
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD01:23
Unit193JohnBeales: EC2, isn't that cli so a server OS would be better? Maybe Debian or Ubuntu server?01:23
JohnBealesYou would think, but I need a desktop, (I'm taking screenshots of websites), and am hoping that Lubuntu will be faster than my current full-ubuntu setup.01:24
Unit193Never done it myself, so you may be able to use lubuntu-core, but not sure that's working right now.01:25
JohnBealesIn theory I could install some sort of super-minimal linux, then add window managers & stuff, but I'm looking for an easier way where I don't have to spend a week learning what's what.01:25
JohnBealesAccording to the minimal installation page that should work, although wouldn't I have both the lubuntu-core installed, plus unity and all that ubuntu crap?01:27
JohnBealesI'm also working on installing to a VMWare fusion virtual machine that I may be able to upload & import into EC2.01:27
JohnBealesBut the thought of waiting for a whole VM to upload on DSL is making me second-guess that plan.01:28
Unit193Can't you just install directly using alternate installer?01:29
Unit193Note: I haven't touched an EC2 before ever, so I'm doing nothing better than a guess.01:30
JohnBealesI have to boot something, though. You can't get a raw system on EC2, you need to access it by SSH or some sort of remote desktop, which requires an OS01:30
JohnBeales.. which makes it tough to use an "exotic" OS01:31
Unit193Alright, so you install the bare using mini.iso, upload, then install lubuntu-desktop?01:31
JohnBealesThat's what I'm hoping to do. I'll see if it works.  If not I'll have to start with Ubuntu, (which is available already in EC2), and strip it.01:33
JohnBealesI just finished my mini.iso install, and am waiting for it to reboot. Then I'll make sure I have SSH and see if I can figure out how to upload it l)01:35
Unit193!purelxde |If you have to do it the other way01:36
ubottuIf you have to do it the other way: If you want to remove all !KDE, !GNOME and !XFCE packages and have a default !Lubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelxde »01:36
JohnBealesCool, thanks.  That's the kind of docs I need.01:37
Unit193Well, hope it all works out and that I helped a little.01:40
JohnBealesWell, my install into a VM from mini.iso doesn't seem to be bootable, so I'm going to try stripping an existing ubuntu install with the link you provided.01:42
Unit193Note, it's made for Ubuntu typical, not the EC2 one. ;)01:52
JohnBealesYeah, I'm finding that most of the packages in the cleanup instructions aren't there, but that just means that things go faster02:16
JohnBealesSince I don't have a screen, I'm using a virtual frame buffer as a screen, but I'm not sure how to start the window managers & stuff, (or even what's needed).  I'm sure there's a script somewhere that would run if a screen was attached, does anyone know where it is?02:45
Unit193The command would normally be  startlubuntu, but not fully sure that's what you're talking about.02:46
JohnBealesI'll look ;)02:50
JohnBealesDo you know where the startubuntu command is kept, so I can look at it? (I'm guessing it's a script)02:51
JohnBealesFound it, in /usr/bin02:53
Unit193Heh, welp...02:55
souliaqis true that Lubuntu 12.04 is not LTS?02:56
kanliotyes true02:56
souliaqdamn, but if ubuntu repositories are updated, then Lubuntu keep updated in some way, right?02:57
kanliotwell 99% of updated isn't very good02:58
Unit193Core and all, just not LXDE.02:58
Unit19399% is rather good, just not LXDE.02:58
kanliotbut then people are running 10.10 and so on without too much trouble02:58
souliaqah ok, that's good.02:58
Unit193Just not the L in Lubuntu. ;)02:59
micahgBTW, FTR, not being LTS doesn't mean that the Lubuntu team can't update packages in the LTS, but rather that there just won't be point release ISOs03:30
micahgand there's no official commitment to support for >18 months03:30
Unit193While that is helpful, the problem was very few devs.03:33
micahgright, just saying if you get more later, you can still do bug fixes that would normally qualify for SRU03:35
Unit193Thanks, though I can't help with that.03:36

Gorilla_No_Bakait does.. i made the script ... is right in front of me.. :)09:03
NQTropicset to executable?09:04
Gorilla_No_Bakayup09:04
Gorilla_No_Bakado you think it might be because somebody decided to left out the ia32-libs?09:10
NQTropici guess it is a bit above me, try asking in #ubuntu+109:11
Gorilla_No_Bakaneah.. i decided to install it anyway.. those muppets will tell me to switch over to superbloaded crappy ass ubuntu pago-whatever..09:12
NQTropicit's console stuff, they dont need to know it's lubuntu09:19
Gorilla_No_Bakagood point..09:20
Gorilla_No_Baka:)09:20
Gorilla_No_Bakaright.. Apparently there's a lot of missing libs in Lubuntu... (Even after i have instaled the  ia32-libs)09:32

NQTropicdid I miss anything?11:17
KM0201NQTropic: looks like someone named Gorilla_No_Baka was having some ia32libs issues12:10
KM0201other than that, quiet as a churchmouse12:11
NQTropici didn;t miss anything then, thanks KM0201 :)12:12
KM0201;)12:13
KM0201i was asleep while that was going on12:13
KM0201my guess is, he hasn't updated a 12.04 system, because that shouldn't be an issue anymore12:13
KM0201question on the desktop pager for Lubuntu.. why can't you "set" it like Gnome.. where instead of all the workspaces being shown side by side in the panel... where you can set it to be "2x4" or "4x4" .. etc.. rather than stacked all side by side13:04

bkmhello, (on Oneric) i get The Flash plug-in was blocked because it is out of date using chromium. I have a more recent plugin, but it does not seem to work. i have followed a bunch of online recipies, but the situation does not seem to improve.14:37
bkmif i say, Run this time, it works fine, but i do not know if this has security problems14:38
gordonjcpbkm: sudo apt-get install firefox ;-)14:42
gordonjcpI put up with chromium for about a day14:42
bkmnot on this poor lappy. it seems to use more resources than chromium14:42
gordonjcpit looks pretty good but it's so slow and crashy14:42
gordonjcpand the "this file may harm your computer" thing is infuriating14:42
bkmnever see that!14:42
bkmi wonder if that is something i turned off...14:43
gordonjcpbkm: try downloading a PDF14:46
gordonjcpyou can't turn it off, and the Chromium devs say they have no plans to make it turn-off-able14:46
bkmit works fine. you you have a specific pdf?14:46
gordonjcpjust in case, y'know, *somehow* a Microsoft Windows virus that uses Adobe Acrobat Reader can somehow infect a Linux machine through Evince14:47
gordonjcpbkm: no, any PDF at all14:47

sqrrl_hey, i try to set the default view of pcmanfm like here: http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=638 but it does not work. I created the file .config/pcmanfm/main.lxde with configuration19:32
sqrrl_any suggestions?19:32
Unit193.config/pcmanfm/lubuntu/pcmanfm.conf should be the file19:36
sqrrl_Unit193: That does not work, do i have to restart/relog?19:38
Unit193You have to restart the pcmanfm process, and that handles the desktop.19:39
Unit193So logout anbd back in.19:39
sqrrl_Ok, if i not return, it worked, thanks :)19:40
wxlthere's no good way to restart pcmanfm without logging out is there?19:40
Unit193killall pcmanfm && pcmanfm --desktop -d  is as close I think.19:41
wxlah there's the necessary switches19:41
Unit193--profile lubuntu19:42

mandiI have one question...I want to try lubuntu for an old computer so I thought to ask first for the availability of drivers. I have tried ubuntu and it managed to get the drivers itself. Will lubuntu do the same ?21:18
Unit193Should as the core is the same.21:18
mandiok, ty21:20
PoaBlubntu doesn't use lxde in 12.x - i'm surprised.. why?21:44
Unit193Lubuntu uses LXDE in 12.04.21:45
PoaBhmm then i got something wrong - thx - wired21:46
civixierhi all. I have a problem I can't seem to get a grip on. When I suspend my ux21e and start it up again the screen brightness goes back to 100%. Any ideas?22:31
qwebirc444214hello, probably a stupid question but does lubuntu use .deb and does it have the same level of support ubuntu has with drivers?22:39
Unit193Lubuntu is using the Ubuntu core system but LXDE rather than Unity/Gnome.22:40
qwebirc444214so yes? XD22:40
Unit193Should, yep.22:40
qwebirc444214:D ty22:41
qwebirc444214umm... more possibly silly questions x3  does lubuntu have a software center like ubuntu and do all the programs and codecs in that work with lubuntu?22:43
Unit193Basically should, but since some have high depends, are better off not being installed.  You can install Ubuntu software center, or in 12.04 there will be a "Lubuntu Software Center" by default.22:46
