[06:37] Morning [07:56] good morning [08:00] hohum [08:00] sup [08:01] nice day in EL? [08:26] sigh, power failure... [08:34] when we have a power failure we just all go home [08:34] even though the upses can do 45mins [08:34] but the network is not on any backup power [08:34] yeah [08:35] but i'm already at home [08:35] cellhpone and laptop can do several hours [08:35] watch series then [08:35] and I have two laptops here... [08:35] or I can actually do some work :P [09:27] good morning [09:30] morning [11:35] hey Kerbero, I managed to sort out the optimus enabled laptop so I can choose which graphics card to use using bumblebee :) It wasn't all that hard, I guess they have updated the code a bit [12:09] o cool [12:09] glad it worked for you [12:10] do you have a hdmi output, and have you tried using that with bumblebee? [13:42] hi superfly and others [13:43] for those that dont read list mails we have our monthly meeting tonight at 1930 [13:43] hi nlsthzn [13:44] inetpro, ping [13:44] Kilos: pong [13:44] nuvolari, ping [13:44] vegadering vanaand ne [13:44] Hi uncle Kilos ... yup, saw the mail... I suspect I will be in bed by then [13:44] hmm... [13:44] not sure whether I'll make it [13:45] lol nlsthzn that message was aimed at others not you [13:45] this monday has been way to rough [13:45] so you gonna sleep inetpro ? [13:45] :( so I'm not invited [13:45] Kilos: and it's all corrie206's fault [13:45] no nlsthzn you are always welcome [13:46] what did corrie do inetpro ? [13:46] :p [13:46] or not do [13:47] you should just tweet him that its time he attended a meet again [13:47] Kilos: 6:55 AM @corrie206 *pokes Monday with stick* [13:48] ha ha ha [13:48] someone still has to explain to me who has ops on this channel, or why no one can change the topic [13:48] Banlam: drubin can [13:48] its controlled by superfly methinks Banlam [13:48] and perhaps even superfly [13:48] oh only drubin? [13:48] and others [13:48] drubin doesn't have ops though [13:49] Banlam: he can get it whenever he wants [13:49] and why would neither have htem changed the topic in excess of 8 months [13:49] inetpro, ok [13:49] oh and Superhuman IIRC [13:50] hehe i remember i once messed it up by accident [13:50] still dunno how [13:50] trying to copy paste something i think it was [13:51] Kilos: are you sure it was in this channel? [13:51] I think cocooncrash also can has ops [13:51] ya they moaned at me and drubin fixed it [13:51] and morgs [13:52] and highvoltage [13:52] only when we get bad peeps here the ops appear [13:52] -ChanServ- Founder : highvoltage [13:52] :O [13:52] inetpro: you're welcome [13:53] hehe [13:53] haha [13:53] inetpro, that means you will attend tonight hey [13:53] no excuses accepted [13:54] ChanServ can give ops to people previously set up - i.e. they can ask ChanServ to op them or others [13:54] what time is the meeting? [13:54] 1930 [13:54] ah === inetpro changed the topic of #ubuntu-za to: IRC meeting 16 April 19:30 SAST || Ubuntu South Africa LoCoTeam || Website: http://ubuntu-za.org/ || Forum: http://za.ubuntuforums.org/ || Join: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-za || Mailing list: http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-za ||Events: http://loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu-za/events || Pastebin: paste.ubuntu.com or codepad.org [13:54] thanks morgs [13:55] \o/ [13:55] hi MeepZA [13:55] * Superhuman hasn't got ops in #ubuntu-za [13:55] hi kilos [13:55] I'm probably just going to idle until the meeting this evening [13:55] lo Superhuman you still going strong? [13:56] might be a bit late for it [13:56] Kilos: always! [13:57] bit late is better than not attending [13:57] adn this one is important with the release coming soon [13:58] yeah [13:58] does lubuntu also come via canonical guys? [14:00] where is the agenda for tonight's meeting? [14:00] whew the monkey mailed it [14:06] Kilos: no, primarily community-driven [14:06] must have got lost in my email filters [14:07] oh my. ty tumbleweed [14:07] so according to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canonical_Ltd. they still support it, or at least it looks like they do [14:07] I know recently they dropped support for Kubuntu [14:08] MeepZA: canonical only supports packages in main [14:08] the Ubuntu desktop CD / DVD only contains packages from main [14:09] the other CDs / DVDs contain packages from main and universe [14:09] mind you, you pay them enough, and they'll support anything [14:13] so I would upgrade my desktop to precise now, except I don't want to download all the new packages from home [14:13] but playing around on my laptop I'm happy with it at the moment [14:14] at the price-per-gig these days, dist-upgrades aren't that expensive. Probably about the same as two pints of beer [14:15] would it be reasonable to lug my desktop to TSL for the release party? [14:16] evening all [14:16] or afternoon [14:16] ;p lol Im losing track of timezones [14:16] hi Symmetria [14:17] hi Symmetria [14:18] see you at the meeting guys. keep well [14:19] heh Im involved in the most insane project at the moment [14:19] we're trying to build a network overlay to create infrastructure for a multi-country opera [14:19] with performers in 3 countries at the same time and the music specifically composed to handle latency and delay [14:19] over absolutely sick amounts of bandwidth [14:19] sounds interesting [14:20] heh, 2 gigabit / second simplex streams [14:20] between .za and london, .za and brazil, .za and the UK and the UK and brazil [14:20] what's the highest latency you are expecting? [14:21] about 500ms [14:21] we're deliberately running raw video and audio with zero compression to remove any encode/decode delay on the streams [14:22] and will then ramp the packet sizes up and use jumbo frames to try and optimize the streams [14:23] as well as using segmented lightwave frequencies from the US down to brazil to segment the traffic and protect it better there (where there is less capacity, everywhere else there is plenty of capacity to use shared circuits) [14:23] surely some compression would help? [14:24] meepza *shake* compression reduces the bandwidth we need, but there is a far higher degree of latency introduced in the encode/decode process than what we'd deal with without it [14:24] real time compression of video and audio at those rates introduces a lot of latency [14:25] (as much as 2 to 3 seconds) [14:25] so we're just gonna chew bandwidth instead [14:26] there are much lower latency compression options [14:26] and uncompressed video at any non-minute frame size is truly gigantic [14:27] tumbleweed yeah, thats why we're talking about 2gigabit simplex streams [14:27] that's still very limiting on your frame size [14:27] we're already tested the latency introduced on a number of codecs at half a gigabit, it definately works better uncompressed :) [17:17] hello [17:23] hello Kilos, psydroid zeref Meep [17:23] btw our agend page is at http://loco.ubuntu.com/meetings/ubuntu-za/406/detail/ [17:23] hiya superfly kbmonkey psydroid zeref Meep [17:24] brb 4 mins... [17:27] World of Warcraft [17:27] ah [17:27] clearly kilos doesn't have friends who play/played it :) [17:28] nope Banlam but i love war games like AOE and red alert [17:28] nice [17:28] pc wont do new games [17:28] :( [17:28] i played AoE2 again last year :) [17:28] just as fun as when I first played it [17:29] i enjoy it but not worth running windows just for that [17:29] lol [17:29] wine [17:29] hi kbmonkey Kilos Banlam drussel maiatoday [17:29] and runs bad on wine [17:29] hey psydroid [17:29] hi octoquad [17:29] AoE2 was ok [17:29] colours were a bit funky :P [17:29] I ran it in vmware last year :) [17:29] hey Kilos :) [17:29] hello all [17:29] i have AOE3 as well but crys for a better graphics card [17:29] hi Lionthinker [17:30] yup [17:30] howzit guys [17:30] also gave it a skip cause of computer at the time [17:30] *cries [17:30] I should get it now that I have an upgrade [17:30] whew [17:30] Kilos, whats up [17:30] I get similar framerates to the windows install on the same machine [17:30] Lionthinker, almost meeting time [17:31] maia, but you're running an i5 or something? [17:31] on a 7 year old game :) [17:31] hi Banlam, maiatoday and Lionthinker. and octoquad [17:31] although i acknowledge there have obviously been updates [17:31] so this is before meet chat [17:31] yip [17:31] hey kbmonkey [17:31] does anybody have agenda items to add before we begin? [17:45] oh sorry [17:45] logheim [17:46] our jerry isnt here to check spelling [17:46] okay our review is pretty short this month, I moved those into our agenda... [17:46] inetpro, ping [17:46] we had an ubuntu hour in stellenbosch, so we'll have another after the release parties again [17:46] Maaz, Ubuntu Hours [17:46] kbmonkey: Huh? [17:46] Maaz, topic Ubuntu Hours [17:46] Current Topic: Ubuntu Hours [17:47] okay that is good to hear [17:47] Also I am thinking of having a sortof post release party ubuntu hour after the release party so that the people who can't make it can meet [17:47] for the new folks, an Ubuntu Hour is when you meet somewhere in the spirit of Ubuntu [17:48] I should probably organise one post release party as well [17:48] If you like to know more about what UH is, and how to have one, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hour [17:48] MeepZA: lots of stellenbosch people will be away for the release party because of the long weekend so an informal meet after will be good [17:49] Kilos, we can have an ubuntu hour on irc, yes? ;) [17:49] maiatoday I realised a lot of people will be away, but for those whoa re here having it on a public holiday makes sense [17:49] ya [17:49] no problem MeepZA we will just meet again, I am glad you are organising [17:50] yes thanks MeepZA [17:50] any questions...? [17:51] Promise maia won't throw any more tomatoes ;P [17:51] hehe [17:51] kay [17:51] Maaz, topic Precise Pangolin release parties (26 April 2012) [17:51] Current Topic: Precise Pangolin release parties (26 April 2012) [17:52] there is quite a chat on the email list about this [17:52] MeepZA: I couldn't get tickets for AfrikaBurn so I'll def make the release party, is there anything that needs to be done [17:53] not really [17:53] where are there parties organised for? [17:53] I'm even organising a pangolin cake [17:53] cake! wow! [17:53] yay for for cake [17:53] tsl, UCT, cape town [17:53] and there was talk on the list about pretoria [17:54] you can see the email chatter at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-za/2012-April/thread.html [17:54] ty [17:54] but best to join the email list so you don't miss anything ;) [17:54] yup [17:55] Ill contact the dbn lug too and see what they think [17:55] maiatoday have you blogged about it? [17:55] kbmonkey, didnt yourself magespawn and nuvolari also say you gonna have a durbs one [17:56] yes! [17:56] nope not yet, sorry [17:56] Maaz action maiatoday to blog about release parties [17:56] maiatoday: Huh? [17:56] bleargh [17:56] botsyntax [17:56] isit not, um.. [17:56] agreed? [17:57] Maaz agreed maiatoday to blog about release [17:57] Agreed: maiatoday to blog about release [17:57] idea [17:57] MeepZA: do you need more demo stuff [17:58] also I'm planning to use the facebook event to judge numbers, should I be worried about more people attending? (for cake purposes) [17:58] first come, first cake, is a good motivator [17:58] don't worry, the cake regulates itself, we just make smaller slices if there are too many [17:58] cut the cake late and size slices accordingly [17:58] the fourth law of cakes [17:59] it will be gone by the end of the day [17:59] maiatoday so I've installed a few games on my laptop, might bring my desktop to show off things though [17:59] ok [17:59] any reccomendations would be appreciated, but we can chat about that later I'm sure [17:59] anybody else wanna demo something at the release party? open invitatino [18:00] do you wine WoW? ,aybe we should pick a few windows games that work well with it [18:00] maybe* [18:00] yeah I wine WoW [18:00] I spoke to Nico Michael a while ago, as noted in on the mailinglist: AFAIK the Pretoria release party will be Saturday morning the 5th of May. [18:00] yay amanica [18:00] I have heard people get better fps in wine than in windows with some games [18:00] good news [18:01] thanks for the info amanica [18:01] amanica: do you guys need help putting things on the loco website and if you mail me the detail, I'll put it in the blog post too [18:01] also if you are going remember to take a photo or too [18:01] s/too/two/ [18:02] miatoday: no problem, I think if I see Nico tomorrow, we should send out a more coherent mail [18:02] would it be a good idea to pick up a stack of DVD's or some flash drives for the release party? [18:02] and update the website [18:02] we have a bunch of blogs feeding through http://ubuntu-za.org <-- our ZA portal [18:02] so pictures and news we post will collect there [18:03] also my blog (and some other peoples) goes through to the ubuntu planet [18:03] I don't think the official cds will be here in time MeepZA [18:03] (I'm on the planet too, so my 1 in 2 years ubuntu post should appear :) [18:03] he he [18:04] no I doubt we'll have any official CD's by then, but we can still parte [18:04] I was referring to blanks we could burn on the toaster [18:04] yeah that's a good idea MeepZA [18:04] or flash drives, been meaning to pick up a new one anyway [18:04] and the install goes faster that way [18:04] yeah I think it is good to bring some cd's/dvds along, last time we had people run around to buy some, so you can even make a profit :) [18:05] remember, you can also have install fests! [18:05] I still have some stickers I'll bring those [18:05] profiteering off ubuntu would make me feel dirty [18:05] yay stickers :D [18:05] any chance of sending us some stickers? [18:05] * kbmonkey *nods* [18:05] MeepZA: there's a difference between profiting and profiteering :-P [18:06] I can sponsor some?! [18:06] amanica: mail me and I'll try to get some to you, [18:06] sweet [18:06] I should make up a new batch again some time [18:06] stickers are very popular, and free advertising [18:07] our agenda items are done, anybody like to discuss anything else? [18:07] I recognise a friend's car because he put a "linux inside" sticker on it [18:08] amanica it's pretty easy to get stickers made, there are resources online so you could also make up a batch if you want [18:08] ^ +100 internets [18:08] maiatoday, interesting :) I can look into it [18:09] Thanks all for joining. Remember IRC is open 24/7 so you don't have to exit now that we have done here ;) [18:09] hang around, and catch some more tomatoes. [18:09] modern printers should print them fine. just to use the correct paper [18:09] Have any of you heard of Dead Drops? Imagine having this setup around the city with the latest Ubuntu installation -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwohadcUv4A&feature=youtube_gdata Just an idea, but might not work [18:09] quick poll: what kind of stickers should I make up next,1) those silver small powered by ubuntu stickers 2) more of those domed gooey ones 3) something else [18:10] MeepZA: I get better framerates on my ubuntu WoW than on windows [18:10] Maaz, end meeting [18:10] Meeting Ended [18:10] Minutes available at json: http://maaz.mene.za.net/logs/meetings/freenode-%23ubuntu-za/2012-04-16-17-36-51.json :: txt: http://maaz.mene.za.net/logs/meetings/freenode-%23ubuntu-za/2012-04-16-17-36-51.txt :: html: http://maaz.mene.za.net/logs/meetings/freenode-%23ubuntu-za/2012-04-16-17-36-51.html [18:10] maiatoday: +1 for 1) and 2) from me [18:10] but that's because some features are disabled for opengl [18:10] oh my, i got lagged and a bunch of messages flooded in at once :/ [18:10] lol [18:11] maiatoday do you have any graphical artefacts? [18:11] ok amanica mail me and I can always send you the pdf file if you want to have stuff made locally [18:11] Kilos, you are the man on copying apt archives [18:11] MeepZA: on my one box I do but on the new laptop I don't [18:11] have you used aptoncd? [18:11] what about it kbmonkey ? [18:11] yip [18:11] long ago [18:12] the new laptop has intel integrated graphics and optimus enabled nvidia graphics [18:12] rsync works well [18:12] Ill have a looksy at that too [18:12] fan of rsync [18:12] so I have to run bumblebee and run WoW explicitly on the nvidia card [18:12] ah that bumblebee again [18:13] you people and your wow. what happened to quake? ;D [18:13] maiatoday are you using the nv driver or the proprietry one? [18:13] Kilos, I saw a bumblebee in the garden today. [18:13] hehe [18:13] kbmonkey oepnarena :) [18:13] I am using the bumblebee version of the nvidia driver MeepZA [18:13] It was zooming around the aubergines [18:14] bumblebee gave langjan big probs [18:14] I've heard of this openarena MeepZA. is that online? [18:14] not sure, played it in class few times on the lan though [18:14] I meant more like Quake I he he [18:14] hi peeps [18:15] First person shooters make me seasick [18:15] hi afrodeity [18:15] hello kilos [18:15] we could probably get a game going in TSL, though teeworlds is more popular with the students [18:16] teeworlds \o/ [18:16] haven't played that in ages [18:16] cool lets play teeworlds at the release party [18:16] cable freedom coming soon [18:16] I've never played it :D [18:17] meh, I'm so over teeworlds, but sure [18:17] kinda similar to baboviolent [18:17] anyone a fan of RTS games that has yet to try spring?
