Andy80if Xorg crashes without giving you any error messages on screen and takes you back to the login screen, how/where can I look to understand why is this happening? I suppose a bug on the nvidia driver (bug already reported) but I'd like to understand better...11:06
Andy80crashed again :\11:36

bronzdragonHey, Im having a problem with LightDM acting up on boot.21:06
bronzdragonWhen I boot up, LightDM doesnt start. Running LightDM restart lets me launch gnome.21:06
bronzdragonAny guesses as to why LightDM fails on boot, but without changing anything, a restart fixes it? Im assuming its reading from some other config when being run by me than when being run on boot? Would that make sense?21:06
JanCbronzdragon: does lightdm start and fail or does it not start at all?21:11
bronzdragonIm not quite sure. It says in the output it starts21:13
JanCin what output?21:13
bronzdragonBut its not followed up by any graphics or a message saying it stops. While every other DM starts and stop21:14
bronzdragonBoot output21:14
JanCeh, if this is Ubuntu, normally there should be no "boot output" AFAIK?21:15
bronzdragonYes, that is correct. I dont get the usual boot messages, but since something fails, I get more messa-- oh wiat, thats the Xorg output I believe, rather than boot messages. Its the first text I see on screen after a boot.21:16
kklimondabronzdragon: are you sure it doesn't start? have you check /var/log/lightdm/ for logs?21:16
JanCanyway, if it says it starts, it probably at least tries to start, so it's not a problem with the upstart job21:17
bronzdragonLike I said, it says it starts, but I cant see anything. And it doesnt compalin when I restart it, so I assume it is running. But Ill look at lightdm logs now. Should I pastebin them?21:17
JanCbronzdragon: did you try switching to other virtual consoles with Alt+Fn?21:19
bronzdragonYes, that works. Thats where I run lightdm restart, to have it restart and then work perfectly21:19
JanCbut did you try finding LightDM on one of them?21:19
bronzdragonhttp://pastebin.com/gqb8p9Sr21:20
bronzdragonCould you rephrase that?21:20
bronzdragonAre you asking if its running anywhere but 7?21:20
JanCor you didn't get switched to 721:21
kklimondabronzdragon: this one isn't really helpful, specially given that you've restarted lightdm so it's a log of a working session21:21
kklimondabronzdragon: check x*log for errors21:21
bronzdragonWhen I restart, I get switched to 7 which is where it restarts.21:21
bronzdragonRight, yes21:21
bronzdragonWhich one of them? There is x0/greeter and x1/greeter21:22
JanCseems like there is an *.old log too?21:22
kklimondayeah, check their timestamps21:23
bronzdragonNo .olds21:23
bronzdragonDo you wanna see the earlist?21:24
kklimondabronzdragon: the earliest from this session?21:24
kklimondaon my machine some of those logs go back to november ;)21:25
bronzdragonThey all have the same time stamp. But Ill assume the ls -l orders them by seconds too, even though it only tells me minutes.21:25
JanCkklimonda: I just removed one huge one from November actually  ;)21:25
bronzdragonOh wait nvm, its ordered by name. Im being silly21:25

bronzdragon`sir!21:27
* kklimonda is surprised there are no .log.old files 21:27
JanCin pastebin! ☺21:27
bronzdragonhttp://pastebin.com/ncmtjTE721:27
bronzdragonSorry, figured 5 lines would be fine in here.21:27
kklimondaheh, there is nothing there21:28
kklimondabronzdragon: can you reboot, wait for lightdm to fail to start and copy the content of /var/log/lightdm/ somewhere safe?21:28
bronzdragonOh yeah, sure. Gimme a minute then.21:29
bronzdragonHello again!21:47
bronzdragonSorry about taking forever21:47
bronzdragonI was dumb. Twice21:47
bronzdragonArchive or pastebins?21:48
kklimondapastebins should be faster21:48
bronzdragonhttp://pastebin.com/FfquUgCt21:48
bronzdragonLightdm.log21:49
bronzdragonOh this one has a bunch of errors! Nice21:49

bronzdragonThis is 0-greeter. Are the rest of any interest? http://pastebin.com/3kE8s5gn21:50
kklimondabronzdragon: bug 87349521:53
ubot5Launchpad bug 873495 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "LightDM fails to start when installed in OEM mode after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/87349521:53
kklimondabronzdragon: are you running 11.10 or 12.04?21:53
bronzdragonWhats the command for finding out?21:53
kklimondalsb_release  -a21:53
bronzdragon11.1021:54
kklimondabronzdragon: ok, can you test kernel from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/873495/comments/17 and report back (to the bug report, not here) if it's fixed the issue?21:55
ubot5Ubuntu bug 873495 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "LightDM fails to start when installed in OEM mode after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed" [Medium,Triaged]21:55
kklimondawell, you can also say here, but bug report is more important :)21:55
bronzdragonThats the only suggested fix?21:56
kklimondabronzdragon: well, one of the comments suggests that it's a kernel issue21:56
kklimondathe patches look.. unrelated, at least their names21:56
bronzdragonHis fix points at the newer kernel version than what Ubuntu has21:57
kklimondabronzdragon: the work around is for lightdm to wait few seconds before starting21:57
bronzdragonIs that a problem?21:57
kklimondathe problem is a race condition between nvidia module creating /dev/nvidiactl and lightdm starting21:57
bronzdragonI see. That makes sense. Since restarting LightDM magically fixes it21:58
kklimondathe workaround is to delay starting lightdm in hope that by doing this we give nvidia enough time to create the file21:58
bronzdragonHow do I make it stall?21:58
kklimondaedit /etc/init/lightdm.conf21:59
kklimondaadd21:59
kklimondapre-start script21:59
kklimonda    sleep 221:59
bronzdragonThank you]21:59
kklimondaend script21:59
kklimondabut testing the kernel would make it possible to fix the actual bug ;)21:59
bronzdragonDoes it matter where it goes? If so, where?22:00
bronzdragonBefore "start on"?22:01
kklimondabefore script22:01
kklimondaafter emits22:01
bronzdragonThank you again. Ill try this. Also try with the patched kernel and see if that helps22:02
kklimondadont forget revert changes before testing the kernel22:02
bronzdragonIm not gonna do it natively. Gonna try in a VM.22:03
kklimondait's not going to happen in VM22:03
kklimondathe problem is nvidia driver22:03
bronzdragonGonna use this exact compu-- oh right yes22:03
kklimondain VM your gpu is virtualized and it won't be using the same nvidia module22:03
bronzdragonGonna try it natively then... =P22:03
bronzdragonIll remove the line before testing22:03
kklimondayou can easily switch between kernels at the boot time22:04
kklimondaby pressing left shift22:04
bronzdragonYup, thanks22:04
bronzdragonwell see you around22:04
JanCheh, nvidia binary v22:17
JanCheh, nvidia binary blob starts too slow?  ;)22:18
