xubuntu880dont boot03:27
orangeninjayep, swap: 5105 total, 0 used, 5106 free03:29
orangeninjaso how do I mount it?03:29
jgmdevwell linux doesnt uses swap unless it is really necessary so dont worry if it reads 0 used03:30
jgmdevin any case the command to mount a swap partition is swapon /dev/to_mount03:31
jgmdevbut it seems you already have it mounted03:31
orangeninjathat might be the case, I am using 4gb ram in this laptop. but I have noticed hangs here and there with mozilla on youtube sometimes so that's what made me think about it.03:32
jgmdevthats mostly due to flash player03:32
jgmdev4gigs is a lot so dont expect the swap to be used if you are doing light work on that laptop03:33
orangeninjaok, just overzelouse I guess.03:33
jgmdevmaybe the video card drivers are the cause of crashes03:33
orangeninjayeah, so far pretty light just 4 or 5 tabs open at a time.03:34
orangeninjano crash, just a few seconds stutter.03:34
orangeninjawhat is the nvidia package I need to check? I am using one of there mobile cards 800m I think'03:35
jgmdevI have tested intel, nvidia and ati and so far intel has the most compatible drivers, then ati and nvidia in my experience with flash player and videos03:35
jgmdevthere are about 3 nvidia packages nvidia-96 for older hardware, nvidia-173 fore newer and nvidia-current I think nvidia-current should work for you but I'm not sure03:44
jgmdevusually the additional drivers application should assist you on that03:45
jgmdevSystem Menu -> Settings -> Additional Drivers03:46
orangeninjalaptop is abot 4 years old. hp dv6775us03:56
jgmdevthe best bet is to use Additional Drivers application since it automatically checks on a database a installs the correct propietary binary driver04:02
jgmdevyou can also go to nvidia.com and download the driver to install manually but kernel upgrade will break it forcing you to reinstall the driver from the terminal04:03

Artemis3i would remove "splash" from the grub line, then you could also remove "quiet".04:34
Artemis3else use the recovery option04:34
Artemis3just chose boot normaly when the menu appears, it happens to not use splash/quiet04:35
ballArtemis3: I've no idea how to get to that. I tried hot-keying to a text console, but they're not responding to keystrokes.04:38
ball:-(04:38
Artemis3reboot and hold SHIFT, you should see the grub menu, choose the recovery option04:39
Artemis3after that will come a menu, pick the first choice (iirc) recume normally or something to those lines04:39
orangeninjathank for the help guys and jgmdev ! have a good one.04:40

ballI never got to the grub menu, but I hit the reset button on the PC and it's now back at the Xubuntu desktop04:41
ballNext thing I should do is backup the photos I uploaded from a camera this morning.04:42
ballThanks for the help Artemis304:42
Artemis3when you reboot the machine, you should press shift and keep it pressed until you see the grub menu04:42
Artemis3pick recovery, when the menu comes, there is an option for fsck all disks, maybe you should do that...04:43
ballI tried holding down shift, but didn't get the menu. That may be because of my keyboard though.04:44
ballIt's a USB keyboard from an old CRT iMac04:44
Artemis3ball, in the future dont use reset, try ctrl alt del first (and wait a while), in emergency, push alt sysrq (print screen) keep pushing those 2 keys and type reisub (slowly)04:44
Artemis3it might be left shift04:45
ballI tried Ctrl+Alt+Del before resorting to reset04:45

knomebepebe, depends what you want20:14
Unit193It's all in the user.20:14
Unit193And the hardware as well I suppose.20:15
knomejo___, be assured, it will be recognized20:15
dekkz_laptoponly used xubuntu so cant say20:15
bepebewell I have very decent hardware quad core and 4 gb of ram20:15
knomebepebe, xubuntu is more user-friendly20:15
bepebeI'm liking Xubuntu, and have tried Mint LXDE (but didn't like that much - seemed buggy)20:15
knomebepebe, lubuntu will work on less resources, but you probably wouldn't notice the difference with that HW20:16
Unit193Simple, make a live and see what you like.20:16
baizonbepebe: xubuntu20:16
dahmbye20:16
ThePendulum1bepebe: With an X4 and 4GB of RAM, Xubuntu.20:16
Unit193(Also, remember you're asking in #xubuntu, more will say Xubuntu)20:16
knomeso true.20:17
bepebe;) thanks all20:17
bepebeand if i have 12.04 beta 2 installed, i can just run update manager on the day and be up to date like i just installed fresh from the iso on the "official release day" ?20:18

bepebesee you in a bit chaps, installing 12.0420:28
Picibaizon: there are no other modes that trigger that forward though.20:28
baizonPici: +F20:29
baizon+f (forward on uninvited)20:29
baizon+F (enable forwarding)20:29
dekkz_laptophmm so hows xubuntu 12.04 beta 2 treating people?20:30
Picibaizon: er, no. see /quote help cmode, and there is no +i or +r or whatever to have the +f actually trigger, its there to save time when we do have to make those mode changes.20:30
Unit193+f - (Forward uninvited.) - Forwards users who cannot join because of +i, +j, +l or +r.  None of those are set, but if there is an attack, makes it nicer.20:31
baizonok20:32
