straskHi, I think I found a bug in 12.04 beta 2, but I'm having trouble searching on launchpad to see if it's already known or not. It seems to be a raid bug with devices under /dev/mapper. When I search for "raid" or "mapper" in the bugs database, I get zero hits, so I wonder if I'm searching right or if there are really zero raid bugs out there...?00:51
DaekdroomI can find plenty RAID bugs.00:53
straskThat's what I figured, I must be doing something idiotic in my search.00:54
DaekdroomAre you searching under the Ubuntu project?00:54
straskhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/ is where I'm searching.00:54
DaekdroomOh. I didn't look for Precise bugs.00:55
straskAha! Ok search is working fine in the wider ubuntu search, so I guess there just aren't any precise raid bugs yet and I'll go ahead and file one. Thanks!00:57
=== n00b4lyfe is now known as Tasmania
Daekdroomstrask, the fact that there aren't any bugs tagged with precise doesn't mean your bug is not already reported.00:57
DaekdroomIt's possible it's happening since an older version.00:58
DaekdroomOr rather, used to happen in an older version and is now happening again.00:58
straskTrue, I suppose, but it is broken on my system in 12.04 and works in 11.10. But point taken I will search a little more.00:58
christhisisgoolcant wait until the beta comes out01:01

c_smithHey, I'm having issues with Conky not inheriting the current wallpaper in Xubuntu, it always takes the default wallpaper no matter what the current wallpaper is. is there something I can try to fix this? I can also paste my .conkyrc file (it was written in a different language than english which I understand)03:22
c_smithThis is Xubuntu 12.04, btw.03:22
haz3lnuttoo many crashes?  Are we really releasing on the 26th?  I have had app crashes twice in 12 hours.  not a good sign.  Anyone got any feedback on that?03:25
c_smithhaz3lnut, what app?03:26
c_smithand twice doesn't seem as bad as it was.03:26
haz3lnutthis morning it was rhythmbox, a few moments ago it was gnofract4d03:28
haz3lnuttwice in 1 day seems really bad for a product that will "release" in less than 48 hours.03:29
c_smithhaz3lnut, understandable, but I've had no crashes on Xubuntu with my many apps installed, not since I installed it.03:31
c_smithRhythmbox is really stable for me.03:31
haz3lnutI upgraded last night.  This morning I loaded rhythmbox, and it automagically started to catalog all of my music.  about 10% in it crapped out and offered to send a crash report to ubuntu.  I told it "yes".03:33
haz3lnutI just cranked up rhythmbox again.  I'll let you know if it pukes again.03:34
haz3lnutanyone care to offer a reason why we are jumping between rhythbox, to banshee, to rhythmbox again?03:35
wer0ckzHelp! my ubuntu 12.04 wont boot. i downloaded the iso and burn disk. no error message just a blinking cursor. I installed it in /dev/sda5 ext403:51

ActionParsnipwer0ckz: it clearly stated when you joined the channel03:52
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: what GPU do you use?03:52
wer0ckznvidia03:53
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: add the boot option: nouveau.blacklist=103:53
wer0ckzok wait. im loading the ubuntu cd now. "try ubuntu" or "install"03:53
wer0ckzi assume "try ubuntu"03:53
wer0ckzright?03:53
cc11rocksDoes the Rhythmbox that is preinstalled with Ubuntu 12.04 include an equalizer?03:54
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions03:54
jdhfrubuntu's network manager breaks my network connection how come??03:55
Jordan_Uwer0ckz: Do you have any problem booting from the CD normally? I assume no, since you say that you have installed Ubuntu already.03:55
wer0ckzyes ubuntu installed03:56
wer0ckzbut when i eject the cd, it doesnt boot at all03:56
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: then add the boot option to the installed OS03:56
Jordan_Uwer0ckz: Did you use manual partitioning or automatic?03:57
wer0ckzfirst was manual it doesnt work same error03:58
wer0ckznow partition /dev/sda5 ext403:58
wer0ckzActionParsnip: to add boot option, i'll just "try ubuntu" first?03:58
Jordan_Uwer0ckz: Did you change where grub was configured to be installed to?03:58

wer0ckzoriginal was windows. C: and D:03:59
wer0ckzi deleted teh windows C: change it to ubuntu03:59
wer0ckzfail03:59
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: if the OS is installed, you don't need to try Ubuntu. It's already installed04:00
wer0ckzright. like i said, its working usign the cd "try ubuntu"04:01
wer0ckzwhen i eject the cd, it doesnt boot. just a blinking cursor black backgroud04:01
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: is the OS installed to the HDD?04:01
Jordan_Uwer0ckz: Try holding shift during boot. If you don't get a grub menu when you do that, then you probably incorrectly changed where grub was installed. If you *do* get a grub menu, then you can try ActionParsnip's trick from there (press 'e' to edit the menu entry then add "nomodeset" at the end of the line which starts with "linux").04:02
wer0ckzActionParsnip: i guess so04:02
wer0ckzi got 7.72Gib used - free 292.28 Gib04:02
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: then try holding shift, as Jordan_U stated04:02
wer0ckzthats the /dev/sda5 ext4 <- where i installed the ubuntu04:02
wer0ckzok04:02
wer0ckzi'll just restart the laptop04:03
wer0ckzthanks guy04:03
wer0ckzthanks guys04:03
Jordan_UYou're welcome.04:03
wer0ckzthe shift doesnt work04:07
wer0ckzi got the Advanced Welcome Page Options04:08
ActionParsnipdo you hold it as soon as the system starts to power up?04:08
wer0ckzyes04:08
wer0ckzvery long press SHIFT04:08
wer0ckzshould i go to the boot option?04:09
ActionParsnipyes, keep it pressed and you will see the grub boot screen04:09
ActionParsnipthen press E to (e)dit the options. Delete 'quiet splash' and in it's place add 'nouveau.blacklist=1'   then press ENTER04:09
wer0ckzshift still not working04:14
wer0ckzwhat's next?04:14
ActionParsnipwer0ckz: I suggest you use a chroot and you can change the options that way. You will also be able to upgrade the OS if you have web access in the liveCD04:16
wer0ckzok. please tell me how to do the chroot?04:16

hifiwait, what?09:03
hifiyour 2. point is false09:03
eagles0513875_hifi: ???09:04
hifido you know what PermitRootLogin does?09:04
eagles0513875_hifi: yes09:05
eagles0513875_allows you to login as the root user09:05
eagles0513875_which i dont have setup i use sudo09:05
hifithe wording you use is misleading then09:05
hifi"a user to compromise", it gives the impression it has something to do with already logged in users rathern than the actual root user09:06
Trewasthe first point (listenaddress) is not particularly useful, unless the computer has several network interfaces and only one should be used for ssh logins09:06
hifiand you could control that with the firewall anyway09:07

Bennlucky7thats the art of ubuntu ,, u keep tryng until u can10:55
sk1specialhmm. the graphics card is showing both displays.10:55
sk1specialbut the display menu in the systems settings still only shows the one10:55
xranbysk1special: thats normal, the nvidia do not support full integration with the ubuntu desktop10:56
sk1specialso how do i get it to show up? right now the other screen is just a grey light..with no drivers installed they both work fine..but i have no 3d capability without the drivers10:56
Bennlucky7is there an app for the driver? like my ati (catalys control center) maybe u can edit the setting there10:57
xranbysk1special: right now you are asking the community, well..  we can only improe the default ubuntu driver10:58
sk1specialthats what im using right now basically thanks to xranby..its how i enabled it..but even tho it sees it and lets me change settings..nothings actually showing up10:58
xranbybut unfortunally we do not have full specification on how the 3d part of the graphics card work10:58
Bennlucky7my ati works fine with catalyst 12.310:59
sk1specialah yeah. i just find it funny that the regualr picture shows up with no drivers intsalled. but once theyre installed ( and able to do 3d ) the second monitor dies10:59
xranbysk1special: nvidia are sitting on the knowledge how their card work, unless they start to release sourcecode or documentation we will not be able to deliver an optimal solution10:59
Artemis3i suggest ppl running 12.04 update now, before official announcement when mirrors die worldwide~~~10:59
sk1specialyeah i hear you10:59
sk1specialdo you have to reinstall completely for that or can you just update?11:00

Bennlucky7Artemis3:  no update i check it11:02
Artemis3then its fine11:02
Artemis3you are probably in sync with cd images11:03

Artemis3you could alt f2 then type update-manager11:03

v1Nsn y way   xubuntu is better11:28
sk1specialyeah. i switched it back tho. i still want to know how the default driver loads dual screen. but the linux driver specifically doesnt lol11:28
sk1specialit came up. but it would only be a solid grey screen.11:29
sk1specialtrying to change background/screen saver to a matrix one..that i saw online can be found in xscreensaver. but when i try to open it says gnome-screensaver is allready running..11:37

ubottuIf you install a development version of Ubuntu Precise and keep up with package updates, then you will be upgraded to the official release of 12.04 when it comes out. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a terminal. Discussion and support in #ubuntu+1.13:11
GG111Pici: I see, b/c usually dist-upgrades brake the sound on  my system, do you happen to know if it will require a dist-upgrade, or just an apt-get update ?13:12
GG111sorry, apt-get upgrade13:13
PiciGG111: It completely depends on what sort of updates are presented.13:13
GG111I see.13:13

PiciGG111: Yes.13:14

vega-dist-upgrade, upgrade .. neither of them upgrades the distro to a newer release13:15
vega-unless you change your sources.list, which is not the recommended way to upgrade13:15
GG111I must say, ubuntu really wipes the floor with Fedora, espically with the LTS option.13:15
GG111vega, I did dist-upgrade and fro 11.04 , my system tells my that I'm at 11.10, am I not really there ?13:15

Pici!dist-ugprade13:17
Pici!dist-upgrade13:17
ubottuA dist-upgrade will install new dependencies for packages already installed and may remove packages if they are no longer needed. This will not bring you to a new release of Ubuntu, see !upgrade if that is your intention.13:17
GG111"do dist-upgrade"13:17
Picispelling :(13:17
Picido-release-upgrade != dist-upgrade13:17

vega-there is no "do dist-upgrade" command..13:18
vega-there is apt-get dist-upgrade and do-release-upgrade which are completely different13:18
GG111do-release-upgrade, true.13:18
GG111so a do-release-upgrade does take one release higher ?13:18

GG111cool, I just had the commands wrong.13:19

rfmviktor_: LTS means they promise not to stop shipping updates for longer, it still has changes.  they do try to limit the risk somewhat, mainly by moving the change gate back so things are well tested in the alpha/beta cycle.  I haven't had any problems.  Can I, or anybody else, guarantee you won't?  No.13:53

narsil4yeah I coulda sworn it was there an hour ago14:24
narsil4but I figured I was crazy14:24
samster34gnome-terminal works, then after I started it like that, it sometimes shows up as just Terminal as well14:24
narsil4which I am anyway14:24
narsil4It's a real hassle because the "show desktop" icon looks like a terminal, and I keep selecting it.14:25

narsil4I would never use it.14:26
narsil4willingly14:26
samster34what is this show desktop14:26
samster34I don't see it14:26
narsil4When I hit alt-tab, the leftmost icon is a picture of the background called "show desktop". When I select it, all windows disappear.14:27
snadgepossibly classic gnome interface14:27
snadgeahh that14:28
samster34oh, right14:28
narsil4So about 20 times I've wanted the terminal, only to get all windows disappeared.14:28
narsil4It's really devious because there's a white line across the top of the icon, making it NOT look like the desktop and like a terminal instead.14:29

bkc_Skladowy: you have part 11.10 and part 12.10, good luck getting that to boot ever again :)22:04
