Unit193c_smith: Yep, you got it!03:42
c_smithUnit193, thanks03:52
pmohey i have a strange issue with xfce4-notifyd, it moved a bit down the screen and i cant get it back up on its spot06:11
k_szeThere is fsck and then there is what? I forget.06:11
k_szeSome newer utility to check and repair file systems.06:11
well_laid_lawnthere's e2fsck for fixt ext filesystems06:12
well_laid_lawns/fixt/fixing/06:13
k_szeright, that's the one06:13
k_szee2fsck is recommended over fsck, for file systems in the ext family, right?06:13
well_laid_lawnthat's what it is built for afaik06:14
k_sze(I guess it's mainly because of the way arguments and options are handled by fsck - fsck is just a front-end for various *fsck.06:16
k_szeThere is something I don't understand about command line options. For example, the man page of e2fsck says that -c can be specified twice so that a non-destructive read-write test is used to find bad blocks. How do I "specify -c twice"? Do I just go -cc or do I have to separate them like -c -c?06:23
well_laid_lawnk_sze: either way works06:46
well_laid_lawnI'd do -cc06:46

craigbass1976is bugs.launchpad.net the right bugs site for xubuntu?  I'm curious as to whether or not mine's been looked at yet, and I can't remeber where I filed it12:23
craigbass1976found it...12:25
Wizardastraljava, no, I didn't12:27
Wizardand mostly "invalid"12:27
marqyhello Wizard.  Thank you for the help yesterday. Following your clues, I found that my X failure issue was due to vast log files > 4Gb kern.log and syslog meaning that the / partition was full.  I have moved these and put var onto its own partition while i keep an eye on things.  i have no idea yet how the logs got so big over only a few weeks and why they weren't tidied up12:29
astraljavaWizard: Ok. Well, that's always good to hear, isn't it? :)12:29
Wizardmarqy, glad to hear it12:30
Wizardthat what you said yesterday, when I left (df saying something different than du) may be caused by "out of inodes" situation12:31
Wizardthis hapens rarely if there is alot of empty (or small) files)12:31
Wizardmonitor /var and see which logs grow very fast, rest will be easy12:32
Wizardastraljava, yup :)12:32
grifo74hello my portable pc have a intel graphic card and my son like play supertuxkart but dont work any idea to enable 3d on intel grapfics i have the last drivers installed12:34
marqyit does surprise me that such logs get that big that quick. i also thought logrotate would keep better tabs on them12:34
* Wizard knows nothing about GFX cards :(12:37
astraljavagrifo74: Generally Intel cards don't have a very good 3D performance. Try to lower graphics details if possible.12:41
grifo74but the game dont start12:42
astraljavagrifo74: Can you try starting it in a terminal, and then copy and paste the output on http://paste.ubuntu,com, and when you've submitted it there, tell us the link to it in here?12:51

esphI've got a box that appears unresponsive upon boot, but I can ssh into it successfully. What should I do/check first?17:25
ThePendulumesph: What indicates the lack of response?17:25
esphWell, blank screen, and capslock light not lighting up17:26
esph(though I could be just noticing that last part now)17:26
GridCubeesph, theres no hardware issues? like the monitor not working or something like that?17:27
GridCubeesph, doesnt the network connector lights lightup¡17:28
GridCube?17:28
esphGridCube: I did see a flash of the xubuntu loading screen last time I tried17:28
esphso I think the monitor still functions17:28
esphand yeah, the network connection light appears to be working17:29
esphso what should I check?17:29
GridCubeesph, you can unplug the vga cable and it should pop a box in your monitor saying "unplugged cable" or something like that, if that happens your monitor its pretty much fine17:29
esphGridCube: It's a laptop17:30
ThePendulumrotfl17:30

=== |Dove| is now known as AngelaBennett
GridCubewell, you see the problem with notebooks and stuff like that is that opening and closing can, sometimes, break the cables17:31
GridCubeif your notebook has a vga output you can try plugging it to a monitor and see what happens17:31
bepebeesph, plug an external monitor in to the laptop and cycle the outputs of the laptop with FN+F key17:31
bepebeare you getting anything on the laptop when you start it up before the xubuntu splash screen? like a manufacture logo, or a post screen ?17:32
esphI'll try plugging it in to something else17:33
esphbepebe: I'm not sure if anything else came up or not17:33
bepebethe backlight may of gone if the lcd display connector has come loose like GridCube mentioned, put a flashlight on to the screen and see if you can see anything17:34
esphbepebe: backlight is still working17:34
bepebetry external monitor then and go from there17:34
esphI can't seem to get an external monitor working either17:49
esphxrandr outputs "RandR extension missing" but it might have done that before as well17:49
esphhaven't used xrandr before on this box17:50
GridCubeesph, do you get a boot bios?17:51
esphGridCube: 1 sec, I'll reboot it again17:53
=== AngelaBennett is now known as |Dove|
esphGridCube: The initial HP splash screen comes up, and the xubuntu loading screen as well, but I didn't see the bios screen. I tried pressing f11 (I can't remember if thats the right button for bios on this machine) and that seemed to screw up the linux booting process, which now actually shows up stalled on the screen (the screen with all the [ OK ] messages)18:08
esphso the monitor still works for sure18:08
GridCubeyes18:08
JukeUKhi all,  my bottom panel icons are left of the screen now.  Does anyone know how to get them centred again?18:08
GridCubeesph, try to boot again, press esc or del or all the f's try to see the boot18:09
esphok18:09
GridCubesee if any errors pop up there18:09
GridCubeJukeUK, dragit, it will "lock" when you move just to the middle, its a tiny movement that it does18:10
JukeUKk ty18:10
JukeUKGridCube,  It doesn't want to play.18:11
GridCubehave you unlocked the panel?18:12
esphGridCube: stuff looks alright in bios land18:12
Chr|sWhen dual booting Win7 and Xubuntu (win7 installed first) I get no OS selection on boot, windows automatically boots. Only have 3 primarys on the drive. Not sure what I am doing wrong for this to continually to happen. When I install ubuntu, I don't have this problem.18:12
JukeUKyes and it has red hashed lines eitherside18:12
GridCube:/ ok esph, can you boot with a livecd and see if it boots?18:13
GridCubeooo, esph did you did an update lately?18:13
GridCubemaybe you updated the kernel18:13
esphGridCube: well, like I said earlier, booting is not a problem; it boots, and I can ssh to it18:13

Chr|sGridCube, xubuntu installs grub automatically when dualbooting, like ubuntu18:19
Chr|swell, its suppose too18:19
bepebeChr|s, sorry, I meant from a LiveCD. What Partition Options did you use ? Install alongside Windows 7 or the Something Else Option ?18:21
GridCubeChr|s, i know, but you say it doesnt shows you a grub stage18:21

GridCubethe last one18:26
bepebeChr|s, Go to Start >> Run >> type msconfig, hit enter >> Check BOOT.INI for any Xubuntu entries18:27
Chr|sbepebe, just lists Windows 7 as default boot under the boot tab18:28
bepebethen I'd go with the Boot Repair CD from that link, or re-install it from the LiveCD again18:29
bepebeWhat Xubuntu version you using ?18:29
