FisherPWhy can't a distribution upgrade work seamlessly, I don't think i've ever had an upgrade work 100% without any problems00:08
FisherPupgraded this morning from 11.10 to 12.04 and not only did it bork my tuners but also my usb remote doesn't work00:09
FisherPnow i have to stuff around, maybe even re-format and re-install either 12.04 or 11.1000:09
FisherPi'm sorry, but it p#@ses me off00:09
FisherPI'm going to try to install an independant linux TV program like Me-TV to see if my tuners do indeed work, any thoughts on an alternative00:11
FisherPmaybe VLC?00:11
tgm4883FisherP, cat?00:11
FisherPwhat do u mean?00:11
tgm4883cat /dev/video0 > file.mpg00:12
tgm4883then playback file.mpg00:12
FisherPhrm, i could try that00:12
tgm4883although I don't know why they don't work, what tuners you have, or what issue you are trying to troubleshoot00:12
FisherPI'm not near the pc at the moment00:12
FisherPHauppage WinTV 500T00:12
FisherPwhen i upgraded and tried to watch TV it said that the tuners were busy00:13
FisherPi checked to make sure there were no recordings happening, and they weren't00:13
FisherPthen I removed all the tuners00:13
FisherPnow when i try to add them the screen doesn't progress to the tuner selection/setup page00:14
FisherPit just hangs00:14
FisherPI even left it over night, in case it was just slow....00:14
FisherPbut nope, it hung.00:14
FisherPI checked the terminal and all it was saying was that it locked the input, then unlocked the input00:15
FisherPafter it had stopped the backend00:15
tgm4883yea check the tuners outside mythtv00:15
FisherPhey mycosys problems with my mythtv install again :/00:15
tgm4883although thta is odd00:15
tgm4883does it say anything in the logs?00:16
FisherPtell me about it00:16
FisherPhaven't really checked the logs, but I'll do that when I get home... i didn't have enough time this morning to really look into it00:16
FisherPtgm4883: sabhain: advised me that it might be a kernel problem and that i should try to install an older kernal00:18
FisherPbut a) i've never done that before so i'm in uncharted territory and b) it sounds very dirty hacky00:18
FisherPand what's with borking my remote too?00:19
FisherPit's not anything special00:19
FisherPand before anyone advises me to power off and pull the plug, been there, done that, no cigars00:20

imaginalI feel like I'm 85% to a correct setup. I have mythbuntu installed on a computer with a tv tuner02:32
imaginalThat system can run the frontend and display the Live TV, and is set to a static IP02:32
imaginalThe second system is running the frontend and a secondary backend, connects to the primary, but won't play live tv02:33
imaginalI would like to watch tv on the second system, but when hitting the Live TV option, it flashes with the loading screen and takes me back to the menu02:34
imaginalNo error messages. I feel like I'm missing a configuration option somewhere. What am I looking at?02:34
imaginalAdditional information,  the primary is installed on a system with a static IP and references itself for the primary. The second computer has its IP in the local backend, but the IP of the first computer in the Primary02:40
tgm4883imaginal, i'm headed out, but take a look at the log files /var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log and /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log02:41
imaginaltgm4883, I'll comb through to find some more info. Thanks for the heads-up02:41

FisherPunixbeardxd: my upgrade is a nightmare08:51
unixbeardxdFisherP, so no different than the norm. Guess I will have to do my usual, backup MySQL and myth config files, reinstall, and restore backed up settings. Par for the course08:53
FisherPit looks like mythbuntu has lost all my firmware... every time it tries to load up new firmware it says it fails08:55
FisherPnope spoke too soon08:56
unixbeardxdThankfully I am using the PlayTV USB tuner. Works great without firmware worries. I do have problems with it going offline and not telling the recorders, so I get a day worth of not found recordings08:57

TandyUK2hi guys, having a problem doing an upgrade of a mythbuntu 11 box11:50
TandyUK2bringing 11. up to date before doing the full dist upgrade, one machien is fine, but another is stuck11:51
TandyUK2i issued a "shutdown -r now" and it hasnt happened. ps lists "/sbin/plymouthd --mode=shutdown" using about 5% cpu11:51
TandyUK2first of all, what is plymouthd? and second how do i make this machien reboot?11:52
RyanCTnadyUK2 - Have a look here for info on plymouthd https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Plymouth12:05
Zinn[wiki.ubuntu.com] Plymouth - Ubuntu Wiki12:05
RyanCTandyUK2 - Sorry I type you handle wrong last time.  See my comment above for info on plymouthd12:09
TandyUK2ok, so onto question 2...12:10
TandyUK2how do i reboot this machine, (im remote), i can see plymouthd running in shutdown mode, but ive been waiting over an hour now for an actual reboot12:10
TandyUK2it hasnt even disconneted my ssh session, but X is down so i can no longer vnc into the machine12:11
TandyUK2in case it matters, this is part of a multi frontend system12:14
TandyUK2the master backend has had its update ok now12:14
TandyUK2but this frontend is still giving grief12:14
TandyUK2could it be related to this frontend being unable to communicate with the ackend12:15
TandyUK2both were running 0.2412:15
TandyUK2the backend is now on 0.25, the same update i was planning to run on this frontend once it has rebooted12:15
TandyUK2also there has been nothing logged to /var/log/syslog since 12:00 wwhen i issued the first shutdown command12:16
TandyUK2(now 13:16)12:17
TandyUK2ok12:21
TandyUK2root     16275  0.0  0.0   4272   692 ?        S    12:00   0:00 /bin/sh /etc/rc6.d/K19lirc stop12:21
TandyUK2that was stopping it, as soon as i "kill -9 16275" the reboot has happened12:21
TandyUK2how would i go about creating a local copy of the mythbuntu repo, and making clients use the loca copy for updates13:53
tgm4883TandyUK2, just like you would for any other repo13:53
TandyUK2currently I am updating 2 boxes at the same site so its not so bad, but another one of my customers has 7 frontends so id rather avoid the download 7 times13:53
tgm4883do you update every day?13:54
TandyUK2apprantly not, despite it being enabled13:54
tgm4883well you would have to run apt-get update/upgrade every day13:54
TandyUK2myth has no auto update?13:55
tgm4883no13:55
TandyUK2well that explains why auto updates arent working13:55
TandyUK2im sure it used to13:55
tgm4883nope13:55
TandyUK2not dist upgrades ofc13:55
tgm4883we do daily builds13:55
tgm4883but you machine isn't automatically downloading and upgrading those builds13:56
TandyUK2im talking about apt only here13:57
tgm4883ah13:57
TandyUK2id like to have machine A download all the updates from the internet and cache them somehow, so that machines B,C,D,.... can get the update from the other local machine13:57
TandyUK2rather than downloading it from the net 7 times13:57
tgm4883TandyUK2, you want squid-deb-proxy13:57
tgm4883and squid-deb-proxy-client13:58
TandyUK2ok, so if i install that, how do i configure a) it, and b) the other 6 machines to use the local cache?13:58
tgm4883one machine gets squid-deb-proxy, all get squid-deb-proxy-client13:58
tgm4883like ^13:58
tgm4883it's autoconfigure13:58
TandyUK2oh ok13:58
tgm4883the squid-deb-proxy machine is the server13:59
tgm4883the -client machines will update from the server, using avahi (i think) for autodiscovery13:59
TandyUK2ok, then what schedule an apt-get update on machine A via cron13:59
tgm4883the server machine will need both packages13:59
TandyUK2and say half hour later on all the other clients?13:59
tgm4883TandyUK2, there is some functionality for doing automatic upgrades in apt, I don't recall what it is though14:00

TandyUK2myth 0.26?15:31
TandyUK2http://www.mythbuntu.org/repos15:31
Zinn[www.mythbuntu.org] Mythbuntu Repositories | Mythbuntu15:31
TandyUK2apart from that page i cant find any reference to 0.26 anywhere on mythbuntu;s site15:31
TandyUK2ahha  - Note: Please note that the following reflects changes for a future release of MythTV currently in development and not recommended for production use. The current release is 0.25.15:33
TandyUK2maybe put "alpha" or "beta" next to the option to choose it in MCC?15:33
tgm4883TandyUK2, doesn't it show a big giant warning if you select 0.26?15:34
TandyUK2dunno i didnt actually click it lol15:34
tgm4883so click it15:34
TandyUK2initially just wondered wtf 0.26 was lol15:35
tgm4883presumably it's a mythtv release15:35
tgm4883being that the current one is 0.2515:35
tgm4883and the previous one is 0.2415:35
TandyUK2no lol 0.25 is the current one15:35
tgm48830.26 must be the next one15:35
TandyUK20.26 doesnt exist as far as mythtv is concernedd15:35
TandyUK2not yet anyway15:35
TandyUK2but yeah having selected it i see the big warning :)15:36
tgm4883hmm, if only that was explained somewhere15:36
tgm4883I see there is a series listed that doesn't exist yet upstream (eg. 0.25). How is this possible?15:36
tgm4883The Mythbuntu team provides repos for each MythTV series. The development builds (often referred to as master) will be available in a repo named for the next major MythTV release. (ie. If 0.24 is the current version, master builds will be in the 0.25 repo even if upstream doesn't have a 0.25 branch yet). This allows users to select the development version and through regular updates eventually get that version when it is released.15:36
tgm4883from the webpage you listed15:36
TandyUK2yeah i was just confused considering mythtv havent even created 0.25-fixes yet, let alone anything to do with post 0.2515:38
TandyUK2your pre-empting the future in MCC lol15:38
tgm4883there is a 0.25 fixes15:39
tgm4883that confusion, is why the FAQ was created15:40
TandyUK2is it possible to do video playlists yet?15:54
TandyUK2"Tuner 5 has an error"  how do i see what error?17:20

TandyUK2although all my card and input assignments are still correct17:24
TandyUK2last time, each time i did a reboot, it woudl randomly assign the /dev/dvb/...  and they were changing which card was adapter0/1/2 on each boot17:25
tgm4883TandyUK2, sounds like you need to setup a udev rule17:28
TandyUK2i just checked, and its still there17:29
TandyUK2options dvb_usb_dib0700 force_lna_activation=1 adapter_nr=117:29
TandyUK2options ngene adapter_nr=017:29
TandyUK2unless thats another thing thats changed in ubuntu17:29
TandyUK2i remember i really struggled to get this working last time17:31
TandyUK2we have for example, bbc117:31
TandyUK2it is available on both DVB-S and DVB-T but obviosuly with different tuning settings17:31
TandyUK2I had it setup so that if someone tried recording somethign on bbc1, it would first try both inputs of the DVB-s card, and if unavailable fall back to DVB-T17:31
dekarlTandyUK2: I locked them down with adapter_nr=xyz, too works well when your DVB-S/T card use different drivers17:32
TandyUK2but then theres also all the channels which are ONLY available on either the DVB-S or DVB-T cards17:32
TandyUK2i have seperate video sources for each card17:32
TandyUK2and then mapped to the right cards in input connections17:33
dekarlTandyUK2: I have one source "FTA", one source "Cable" and another "Internet Streams" each connected to matching cards17:36

dekarlThen I changed the callsigns of all channels that I want the scheduler to consider the same to match. e.g. "ZDF HD" and "ZDF" on all sources17:37
TandyUK2yeah thats already all done, and has been saved through the update17:37
TandyUK2in backend setup, everything is correct17:38
dekarlhmm, and you have checked that the physical cards still map to the correct video sources via the locking down you did? Then its possible that the video sources got mixed up (eg when scanning the DVB-S card while it was connected to the DVB-T source and vice verse)17:39
TandyUK2well input connections are still correct17:40
TandyUK2although that does seem to be what its doing17:40
TandyUK2the second frontend on the  DVB-S card is showing errors17:40
TandyUK2i would try the other card, but i dont know how to forcibly change input card when myth wont actually let me into "watch tv" in the first place17:41
TandyUK2it just flashes a black screen, and back to the menu17:41
dekarl"Your frequency setting (10802750) is out of range. (min/max:48000000/860000000)" <- that sounds alot like tuning to DVB-S on a DVB-T card17:44
dekarlthe DVB-S frequency being in kHz and the DVB-T one in Hz17:44
TandyUK2yeah im just trying to work out why17:45
dekarlso its 10802 MHz is not between 480MHz and 860MHz, which is correct17:45

TandyUK2yeah that i really dont get17:52
dekarlgoogle fight says minus is better17:52
dekarlfor the second tuner: "options ngene one_adapter=0" and to make it the right ids add "adapter_nr=2,3"17:55

TandyUK2also just renamed my /etc/modprobe.d/options  options.conf18:03
TandyUK2see if that helps18:03
dekarlI call mine dvb.conf18:03
TandyUK2ok well now i seemm to have 4 adapters18:05
TandyUK2is this some undocumented change in the drivers18:05
TandyUK2the dvb-t card used to create   /adapterX/frontend0 and /adapterX/frontend118:06
TandyUK2now i seem to have /adapter0/frontend0 and /adapter1/frontend018:06
TandyUK2which would explain a lot18:06
TandyUK2 /adapter1/frontend0 is supposed to be a DVB-S card18:07
dekarlI think /adapterX/frontend0 and /adapterX+1/frontend0 make more sense for two inputs that can be used independently18:09
dekarlbut either way, if you got 4 adapters now you can hook them up to mythtv and connect them to the correct video source :) sounds like you're almost there18:10

dekarlwhere did you come from?18:12
dekarlI have 2 adapters for that card on 11.0418:12
TandyUK2lol 9.04 originally18:12
TandyUK2ive had issues each time ive upgraded first to 10.something, then 11.0418:12
dekarlAhh, that must be an old kernel then... I'm on 2.6.38 and you are likely on 3.2.xyz now18:13
TandyUK2and today going from 11.x t 12.0418:13
TandyUK2yeah the last update killed everything when it upgraded me to the new 3.x kernel18:13
TandyUK2does anybody besides ubuntu actually use 3. yet?18:13
TandyUK2i was under the impression odd numbers mean BETA in the kernel18:13
tgm4883TandyUK2, that was the 2.x series18:14
TandyUK2so we shoudlnt be using it at all until its released under 4.018:14
tgm4883everything changed with the 3.x release18:14
TandyUK2well aint that helpful lol18:14
dekarlwasnt that related to the second number? 2.1/2.3/2.5 unstable and 2.2,2.4,2.6 stable, but with 3.x its 3.1,3.2,3.x all are equally stable?18:16
tgm4883yes18:16
tgm4883that's why users only see the 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 kernels18:16
tgm4883when 3.0 shipped, it only had 3.x, dropping the 3rd number (eg 2.6.32)18:17
TandyUK2surely thats even less helpful18:18
TandyUK2so bug fixes in 3.2 become 3.3 or 3.2.something?18:18
TandyUK2ok when tuning a channel can someone tell me what the18:19
TandyUK2(TLMS) Lock mmeans18:19
TandyUK2iv also seen (TLMS) Partial lock18:19
tgm4883I believe that was dropped, at least for compatibility reasons18:19
tgm4883it's now 3.x.x18:19
TandyUK2and now just (_LMS) Lock18:20
TandyUK2i have tv again now though :)18:20

TandyUK2aye like a LOT of mythtv stuff18:22
TandyUK2which i usually get moaned at for  not knowing what to google for lol18:22
dekarlyou could add something like "you are right here is you want to know what lms or tlms mean" to the page so the next person can actually find it18:23
TandyUK2that would involve registering on the wiki18:23
TandyUK2id prefer to get my customers systemns fixed and get down the pub tbh :P18:24
TandyUK2i dread if the hotels upgrade goes this well though18:24
TandyUK2they have 8 frontends in the building18:24
TandyUK2at least this customer is 1 shared fe/be and 1 fe18:25
TandyUK2far less complicated lol18:25
dekarlTandyUK2: you don't simply netboot all 1/8 frontends from the backend, do you? shouldn't make much of a difference then ;)18:38
TandyUK2er no18:38
TandyUK2where the guide on doing that lol18:39
TandyUK2i use netboot for installing oses usually lol18:39
TandyUK2although mythbutnu didnt like it so i resorted to an actual disk!18:39
dekarloh, once upon a time it was directly in MythbuntuControlCenter, but now you have to manually setup the LTSP packages... works well though18:40
TandyUK2argh getting all the screwed up problems today lol18:45

qwebirc38959rhpot1991: yeah, I'm on .25-fixes and I just updated this morning. It started about 2 weeks ago I think21:34
rogue780hi superm121:54
rogue780hey, would it be possible to install mythbuntu and then use the box to just passthrough the rca video and audio coming in from my hauppauge pvr 150 and have it come out fullscreen vga?21:55
tgm4883yes21:56
tgm4883but let me ask you this21:56
tgm4883are you trying to transfer VHS tapes or record a video game?21:56
tgm4883well either way, you probably won't be able to do either22:01
tgm4883if you are trying to transfer your old VHS tapes to a digital format, you'll likely have to deal with macrovision copy protection. You'll probably need a device inbetween to remove it (you'll know it's an issue if the video gets brighter and darker as you watch)22:02
tgm4883If you are trying to record a video game, the recording of it will likely introduce enough lag to cause you issues. The only way I've seen that not is when using a device that can do passthrough itself (like the HDPVR) and not require the computer to view the signal22:04
tgm4883But go ahead and come in here, ask a question, get an almost immediate response, and never respond to anything22:05
tgm4883It's not like I took any time getting that info for you22:05
rogue780sorry, was changing a diaper22:05
tgm4883well that's sh**ty ;)22:06
tgm4883I'm just bitter because I'm having trouble with some Active Directory integration stuff22:07
rogue780so, my church is hosting a simulcast of a leadership conference on friday and we're using the internet stream to show on our screens. there is also a satellite backup in case the feed goes down. for some reason (probably poorly shielded coax), the satellite quality is degraded by the time it gets to our screens, but it's good from the tuner box.22:08
tgm4883hmm22:08
tgm4883are you planning on recording it?22:08
rogue780so, in order to save cost and come up with a quick solution, I had the idea to use my old mythTV box that I had from 2007 to take the satellite input and then use it to then send it back out as via through our system that is already working22:09
rogue780and then it would have the added benefit of recording it so we didn't miss anything if we do lose the internet stream and there is a delay between switching over22:09
tgm4883so coming out of the computer would be VGA?22:10
rogue780yes22:10
tgm4883that should be fine then22:10
tgm4883You'll have to setup a manual recording22:10
tgm4883since there would be no scheduling data22:10
rogue780right22:11
tgm4883then either start playback of the recording right after it starts or just start it when the feed dies22:11
rogue780cool. I'll go ahead and give it a load and mess with ti, now that I have some confidence that it will work22:11
rogue780out of curiosity, what to US users use for scheduling data now that zap2it stopped giving it out for free?22:12
rogue780I moved right before that change happened and didn't keep up with it22:12

chuckfI just upgraded to precise and have run into a minor problem. I use a PS3 for a frontend. Prior to the upgrade when I navigated the available videos they were displayed in folders. Now I just get an alphabetical list of videos, and even that is not a complete list as it was when displayed as folders22:51
chuckfI figure a setting has changed somewhere, but in the couple of hours of research I've not found the setting for this22:52

imaginalI'm having issues streaming live tv from a second frontend computer. The frontend log just states the backend is misconfigured.23:15
imaginalThe backend log shows "max required free space: 3.0gb w/freq: 14min, then changes from WatchingLiveTV to None23:15
imaginalThe primary backend is on at least 100gb, I'm not quite sure what I'm missing.23:17
imaginalIt has to be a configuration error, but I can't track it down.23:18
