hawkalDoes anyone here know how to disable the system tray notifications?00:09
TheMasterWhich ones?00:09
hawkalall of them00:09
TheMasterYou may be able to disable, or you can purge.00:10
hawkalI've tried looking for settings or pluging removal etc but I can't find anything do you know where I should look?00:10
hawkalI just don't want any notifications00:11
TheMasterGive an example, the update one? You'd either get the config, or disable that from startup.00:11
PsyCl0negood evening everyone. I am running a Lubuntu install that upgraded from 11.04 to 12.04 I believe. But I have lost sound since I upgraded. In alsamixer it shows my sound card (SB Audigy 1) and I have maxed out all the sliders, but yet still get nothing. I have since then installed Pulse Audio Volume Control and have tried all the configurations to no avail. One thing that I have noticed is that under the pulse configurations my SB Audigy c00:11
TheMasterGot cutoff at "I have noticed is that under the pulse configurations my SB Audigy "00:12
PsyCl0neTheMaster: Sorry, the card does not appear. I only have to option to configure my built in sound card.00:13
PsyCl0neI only have the option to configure my built in sound card. Can anyone please assist me in trouble shooting this?00:13
PsyCl0ne(06:12:25 PM) TheMaster: Got cutoff at "I have noticed is that under the pulse configurations my SB Audigy "00:13
PsyCl0nelol :/00:13
hawkalTheMaster: okay for example the download complete notification is of no use to me but I see no way to disable it.00:13
PsyCl0neAlso on a side note, I have tested the speakers and they are working. The SB Audigy should also be functional, still have yet to smell burning components lol00:14
TheMasterWell, you could kill notification-daemon, that'd do it, no?00:15
PsyCl0neActually, I am going to quickly logout and then back in. lets see if I fixed it.00:20
PsyCl0nebrb00:20
TheMasterhawkal: Did you try stopping the notification-daemon?00:20
hawkalTheMaster no I haven't I wasn't sure if it was a permanent solution00:22
TheMasterTry that first, then you can disable that on startup (or remove it) if that works.00:23
TheMasterI've never had to, so I don't exactly know how it's done.00:23
hawkalTheMaster actually I just noticed I must have already disabled it from startup00:23
PsyCl0neback, and it didnt work...00:25
TheMasterhawkal: I installed the xfce one, is notify-osd what is currently bheing used? I don't remember the default.00:25
TheMasterhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/13464/how-can-i-customize-disable-notification-bubbles could also see if that works.00:26
PsyCl0neOk here is another question, is there a way that I can do a fresh lubuntu install while leaving my home directory untouched?00:29
TheMasterShould be an option in the installer, I remember doing it a while back when I didn't want to. :P00:30
hawkalTheMaster: no it's not using notify-osd00:31
TheMasterAlright, just making sure.  Link do any good?00:31

burrito_can't get flash to install correctly on lubuntu 11.04 then 11.1000:37
burrito_youtube displays 'missing plugin'00:37
hawkalburrito how are you installing flash and what browser are you using?00:44
burrito_hawkal, i've tried installing it via lubuntu-restricted-extras, then ubuntu-restricted-extras, then adobe-flashplugin..  I"m using chrome00:46
burrito_I uninstalled flash installer before installing adobe-flashplugin, as well00:46
burrito_then, i figured i'd update my system since i had just installed it and had not updated yet.  So, I went ahead and updated and upgraded, as well.  Still no luck.00:47
hawkalBurrito_ so you've tried installing it manually by getting the plugin from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?00:47
burrito_I enable the third party repos, too..00:47
burrito_No, i had not downloaded from the website00:48
burrito_hawkal, do you think I should give that a shot?  everything I've done so far has been in synaptic00:48
hawkalyes I would, that's how I installed it00:49
burrito_okay, cool.  I'll give that a shot then..  thanks00:49
hawkalYou just have to find the plugin folder for chrome00:49
hawkalyou're welcome00:49
burrito_f!?k I just found that removing cairo dock killed my mysql server..  looks like i'll be trying that out later..00:53
burrito_hawkal, still no luck..  the website's download link is for firefox, but when I click on it anway, it just opens another blank browser window01:15
burrito_still cannot get flash to install in Lubuntu 11.1001:15

colonelqubitHow does Orca run under lubuntu? Hopefully a little zippier on older hardware than stock ubuntu.05:17
TheMasterI have no idea, but I'd *guess* more compatible with Ubuntu.05:18
colonelqubitI saw some notes on the mailing list (e.g. https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-desktop/msg04009.html), but didn't see any recent news05:20
colonelqubitI was hoping that 12.04 lubuntu or xubuntu might have good enough screen reader support so that I could help train some friends to use the computer by themselves.05:21
colonelqubitI might just bite the bullet and upgrade their hardware05:22

AquaGirlLoveHi.05:40

AquaGirlLoveI recently installed XAMPP onto Lubuntu and have been able to access it from the terminal.05:41

phillwJanyk: there are ops, none of who wear badges.11:12
phillwJanyk: which system do you need? i686 (32 bit for older computers), i586 (for even older computers) or AMD64 for modern computers?11:13

Janykthere is XP on the pc11:29
Janykbut i want ubuntu11:30
Janykand there is 512 ram in it11:30
infiltratohello11:31
infiltratoI am upgrading my lubuntu to 12.04 and it asks me wether I want to use lxdm or lightdm11:32
infiltratowhat is the recomended option?11:32
phillwinfiltrato: 12.04 lubuntu switched to lightdm, so that would be my recoomendation11:34
infiltratolike in what will be lighter for my fossil laptop11:34
infiltratoah okay11:34
phillwJanyk: grab the i686 version of lubuntu11:34
infiltratothank you phillw11:36
JanykOkay!11:36
phillwinfiltrato: we switched to lightdm because it has wider base of support. Xubuntu went with it at 11.10 and kindly ironed out some bugs. Lubuntu has only few devs, so we do liase closely with the other teams (who also have but a few devs!).11:38
infiltratookay11:38
infiltratoit's a pity that there are a few devs because I like lubuntu11:40
infiltratoI am grateful to the lubuntu devs11:40
phillwinfiltrato: we have enough to progress, just not enough to support our older releases, hence 12.04 not being an LTS11:44
infiltratophillw: do you mean that I could stay with lxdm but it won't have much bug support in the future?11:48
phillwlxdm will not be further developed, it is lxde specific, with lightdm we can share what precious resources we have across several teams.11:51
infiltratobut would I experience a worse performance with lightdm, considering that I have a laptop with almost no ram?11:53
infiltratoI mean, I got lubuntu because even xubuntu goes like a snail in there11:53
head_victimI don't think anyone has got specific benchmarks.11:53
head_victimPersonally, I'd move to the one that's now default unless you have a good reason to stay on the old one.11:53
infiltratoyeah, it's only the session starter11:54

fragalotlaunchpad tells me the lxkeymap bug is fixed and released, yet I can't seem to figure out how to actually get mine to work then19:04
herpyis your system updated?19:06
fragalotyes19:06

murpleI have an old (8 years?) intel iMac. I have previously used Ubuntu and not had any problems with my soundcard/speakers, this is my first attempt at using Ubuntu + LXDE and I do not know how to get my souncard to function properly -I can't hear a single sound! I have been reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting and everything seems fine as far as I can tell, although I am not an especially experience Linux user.20:06
bioterrorfragalot, you just muted spdif? maybe that could help murple too ,)20:07
murpleCan anyone assist me in troubleshooting my soundcard? As I mentioned it has worked with previous versions of Ubuntu, so it should be easily achieved.20:07
fragalotbioterror: could be - I just muted it in alsamixer20:08
KM0201murple: cant say it will fix your problems, but when i've had sound problems on lubuntu, i just install pulseaudio and pavucontrol, tweak the settings, and usually it'll start working20:08
fragalotbioterror: my current conundrum is trying to find something to easilly export/print some handout vouchers for the captive portal i've just set up :P (it outputs a .csv file with the voucher codes in it)20:08
fragalotwithout having to write something myself20:08
murpleKM0201: When I run pavucontrol it says Connection to PulseAudio failed. I have tried this several times before but I do not know what to do.20:09
KM0201murple: diid you install pulseaudio?20:09
murpleKM0201: This is the specific message: http://i.imgur.com/D5sZF.png20:10
murpleKM0201: I believe so, I'll check20:10
murpleKM0201: No, it doesn't look like it was installed.20:10
KM0201murple: that would explain why its not working20:10
murpleKM0201: I do feel like this is something I should have tried/figured out by myself, I have really been trying for quite some time.20:11
murpleKM0201: Let's hope so!!20:11
murpleKM0201: Well, I no longer get the error in pavucontrol, I can now use the application. I still don't hear any sound though, do I need to reboot or refresh some drivers or something like that?20:12
murpleaplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav still doesn't work.20:12
KM0201murple: open up a nice, long file (maybe a long youtube video)... on the configuration tab, try changing to different configurations, etc... when you find one that works, sound will start playing (from the long youtube video)20:13
murpleKM0201: I've had grooveshark.com open for several hours so that's already taken care of. pavucontrol -> configuration reports no cards available for configuration.20:14
KM0201murple: try restarting20:14
murpleKM0201: reboot system?20:14
KM0201..20:14
KM0201yes20:14
murpleKM0201: Can I come back here and beg for your kind help when I'20:15
murple've rebooteD?20:15
KM0201yes20:15
murplebrb20:15
murpleKM0201: Thank you so much for your help, my computer sounds perfect now.20:22
KM0201murple: np.. glad you got it worked out.20:22
KM0201kinda surprised you had to restart though ( i don't recall ever having to do that)... i'm sure there was probably a way to manually start pulseaudio, but.. i didn't know how.20:22
murpleKM0201: I installed Ubuntu Server and I suppose that does not include pulseaudio? I problably should ahve mentioned that.20:23
murpleKM0201: What is pulseaudio exactly? Is is a driver thing?20:23
KM0201murple: thats correct, also.. when you install lubuntu (from the lubuntu iso) it doesn't include pulseaudio either.. so..20:23
KM0201!pulseaudio20:23
ubottuPulseAudio is a sound server intended as a drop-in replacement for !ESD - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio for information and installation instructions20:23
murpleKM0201: Oh wow, so everyone using Lubuntu with sound needs to manually install pulseaudio the way I just did?20:24
KM0201murple: no20:24
KM0201some sound cards, work just fine w/ alsa (lubuntu's sound server)...20:24
murpleI see. Does pulseaudio require alsa or compeltely replace it?20:25
KM0201i've just found, rather than dicking w/ alsa for 3-4 days (and yes, i did that once).. it's easier to just install pulseaudio, and configure it.20:25
KM0201murple: now that, i'm not sure... i think it completely replaces it.. but i'm not 100% sure20:25
murpleKM0201: Doesn't matter, it was a stupid question, I'll read a bit on the link you posted20:25
KM0201not a stupid question.. i don't admit to be an alsa/pulse audio expert.. i've just ran into the sound issue plenty of times, and i try some basic tweaks on alsa, and if it doesn't work (usually doesn't) i just install pulse and pavucontrol, and I usually have sound in 2min20:26
murpleKM0201: I had a hell of a time to get my wifi card to work as well. I'm still quite a linux newbie and every time I install a new distro I have problems with my network card.20:27
KM0201murple: what type of wifi card do you have?20:28
murpleThis time I ended up having to install Wicd to get it to work, and had a hard time uninstalling nm-applet which I couldn't get to work at all. Also, upon booting it says sometrhingh like waiting for network configuration... waiting 60 more seconds for network configuration and finally continuing boot without complete network configuration.20:28
murpleI believe it has something to do with the fact that I have edited /etc/interfaces or something like that but I am not quite sure.20:29
KM0201oh ok.20:29
KM0201were you trying to get your wireless working, under ubuntu server?  or after you installed the GUI?20:29
murpleBroadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312]20:30
murpleKM0201: Before I installed the GUI I was completely lost, after a little less so.20:30
fragalotHuzzah it's crashed.20:30
fragalot:<20:30
murpleI have to install b43, fwcutter, or b43-installer or heaven knows what.20:30
fragalotWell that's for tomorrow.20:31
fragalotgnite all20:31
KM0201murple: hmm, usually the 4311 is pretty easy to install, the b43-installer, is in the repositories... as long as you have a temporary wired connection, takes about 2min20:31
KM0201!b4320:31
ubottuHelp with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx20:31
KM0201murple: might want to bookmark that for future reference20:31
KM0201lookks like the 4311 will use the STA or b43 driver20:31
murpleKM0201: I installed that installer and I believe the card was functioning after that, but I couldn't get it to work as I couldn't get nm-applet to work either. Network Manager20:32
KM0201hmm, thats weird... did you restart after installing that package, or start the b43 module manually, like the instructions say?20:32
murpleKM0201: Thanks for the link, it's one of the many I used to fix this.20:32
KM0201just seems kinda weird that nm-applet would not work at all, and wicd would work flawlessly20:33
murpleKM0201: I really tried a lot of things to get it to work, it's hard to say at this point exactly what I did and what made it work.20:33
KM0201murple: understood.20:33
murpleIt seemed to me that Network Manager wasn't functioning? Only the nm-applet? I don't know, it only showed a greyed out text although I can't remember what exactly.20:34
KM0201murple: well, if you look at that link.. look at "step 3" under installing the b43 driver with internet access... those two commands, will activate the b43 driver w/o restarting (otherwise, you'll have to restart)20:34
murpleI remember using nm-applet from my previous Ubuntu Desktop installations.20:34
murpleI've definetly did modprobe, but not sure if I did it exactly like explained there.-20:35
KM0201well, that could be part of the issue.... anyway, hopefully its all resolved for you20:36
murpleanyhow, at this point, the wifi seems to work but there are two small annoyances. The first is that it takes very long time to boot because I've mucked around in configuration files, I believe I need to remove auto wlan0 from the interfaces configuration file, does that make sense?20:36
murpleThe second annoyance is that I need to enter my user password in wicd after every reboot.20:36
KM0201murple: hmm, now that i don't know... i think that has something to do w/ stored passwords20:37
KM0201murple: are you using auto login?20:38
murpleYes.20:38
KM0201thats why.20:38
murpleIs there a simple workaround?20:39
KM0201yes, but i'm tryign to remember it (haven't done it in forever)20:39
KM0201its something in ubuntu-keyring20:39
murplehttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=77640620:40
KM0201you could try it.20:40
KM0201shoudln't hurt.20:40
KM0201murple: actually, you shouldn't need that .deb, since you already have installed wicd20:42
murpleWhat do I do here: 4. Go to System > Preferences > Sessions. In the "Startup Programs" tab, click the "Add" button20:42
murpleThat's actually another thing I'd like to know, can I easily install some of Ubuntu Desktop's preferences programs? Is there a bundle perhaps?20:43
KM0201murple: under... i think the preferences menu, is the "sessions" entry... (not using lxde at the moment).. click that, then click on the "startup" tab20:43
murpleYou're right, but actually, I don't need step 4 because the program already starts on boot, I think I might only need the next step.20:45
murpleAnd where do I find that??20:45
KM0201murple: honestly, i don't know, hold on20:45
murpleI already have automatic login activated...20:45
murpleblah.20:45
KM0201right20:46
KM0201ive done this before, i just can't remember how to resolve this20:46
murpleI don't get it, the title matched my problem precisely but all of the steps seemed useless.20:46
KM0201honestly, i think i just deleted my keyring (not really advised)20:46
murplenor understood.20:47
KM0201murple: well, those instructions are old,20:47
murpleOne last question then, how can I go about to troubleshoot the faulty network configuration upon boot? "Waiting for network configuration.... waiting 60 more seconds for network configuration and finally continuing without complete network configuration"20:49
KM0201murple: unfortunately i don't know20:50
murpleokay.20:50
KM0201maybe bioterror or Unit193 can help you with that.20:50
murpleWell thank you very much for your help20:50
murpleMy "cohabitant" needs my attentiont now anyhow, I really appreciate your help. Have a great day.20:50
KM0201no problem20:50
KM0201best of luck20:50
Unit193Ciao.20:51
murplethanks! bye!20:51
ChaosColorhey there21:02
ChaosColorI want to hide most folders of one of my imap accounts in sylpheed because it shows everything in my home directory21:03
SAKKEDwhy cant i fin AMSN at software center?21:04
SAKKEDi updated lubuntu to v 12 and somehow it deleted aMsn21:04
SAKKED:D21:04
ChaosColorI thought just deleting them from the xml was enough, but unfortunately sylpheed decided to recreate the file21:04
KM0201ChaosColor: hmm, interesting.. look slike its not in the repos anymore21:05
Unit193SAKKED: amsn isn't in the repo anymore.21:05
KM0201oops, that was for SAKKED21:05
soupeeeMy netbook want's to update to ubuntu-12.04 but it'll be too big if the 11 series is anything to go by. Is there a lubuntu variant 12.04?21:07
ChaosColoryes there is21:07
ChaosColorI'm running it right now21:07
soupeeehow do I apt-get it?21:07
SAKKEDUnit193: why its not anymore?21:07
Unit193Could be unmaintained upstream, unfixed security bugs, etc.21:08
KM0201SAKKED: probably because it sucks...   https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/amsn/0.98.4-0ubuntu3   (there's builds there you can download)21:08
Unit193But I'd recommend you find another client.21:09
KM0201same..21:09
SAKKEDok21:09
bioterroronly reason to use amsn was that file transfers was faster than pidgins21:09
bioterrorbut that bug was fixed in pidgin21:09
ChaosColorsoupeee, are you running ubuntu?21:10
SAKKEDso what do u guys recommend?21:10
KM0201SAKKED: i guess it depends on your need.21:10
Unit193Could always go with pidgin. :P21:10
SAKKEDi only need msn chat21:10
ChaosColordoesn't amsn also support webcam and those annoying sound thingies and some more stuff like that?21:10
KM0201ChaosColor: yeah21:11
ChaosColorI've been using pidgin since forever so I'm probably biased, but I'd recommend pidgin21:11
KM0201i like pidgin as well.. if you just need chat.. it'll work fine for that21:12
Unit193Na, use finch. ;)21:12
KM0201lol, ok, the best "practical" solution, is pidgin21:12
soupeeeChaosColor: no lubuntu. But it keeps wanting to upgrade to Ubuntu-12.04 which will not fit on my asus eee book21:15
soupeeeput a comma after that "no"21:15
ChaosColoryou might be fine with using the 12.04 sources.list and doing a dist-upgrade. not sure though21:16
* soupeee goes to look at another channel21:16
MrChrisDruif<_<" does nobody read the release notes anymore?21:17
ivoxovahi21:22
ChaosColorso  apparently you just upgrade anyway and still get lubuntu >_>21:22
ivoxovahow do i add the wine menu to the lubuntu 12.04 main menu?21:22
ivoxovai nstalled wine but it isnt in the menu21:22
ivoxovainstalled*21:23
MrChrisDruifChaosColor; the update-manager indeed says it'll upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but this is (unfortunately) a known bug. They hope to triage it in time for coming release.21:23
SAKKEDany1 know some kind of gadget that shows RAM and CPU usage21:24
SAKKEDlike windows have many of those21:24
bioterrorSAKKED, open terminal and type: top21:24
Unit193I have a fancy one called "htop", it's so much cooler. ;)21:24
MrChrisDruifSAKKED; top, htop < terminal based, there is a system monitor gui already installed (lxtask if I remember correctly)21:25
bioterrorUnit193, why it's more fancier?21:25
MrChrisDruifBecause it is...21:25
ivoxovaum any one know how to fix the wine problem?21:25
Unit193ivoxova: Should by default, you can try to dpkg-reconfigure wine, or place it in the menu yourself as shown in the FAQs.21:26
ChaosColorSAKKED, there seem to be panel applets for that21:27
ivoxovawow thats complicated, is there a gui like alacarte?21:30
Unit193Not at this time, but in the making.21:30
ivoxovak well dpkg-reconfigure wine does nothing21:31
SAKKEDi found few21:45
SAKKEDindicators21:45
SAKKEDbut those are in the right corner21:45
SAKKEDid like to have them on desktop21:46
bioterrorSAKKED, http://ricecows.org/slubuntu.png like that?21:51
SAKKEDbioterror: yeah22:01
bioterrorinstall conky and configure22:01
SAKKEDhow can i configure?22:08
SAKKEDi cant move that window anywhere22:08
stlsaintbioterror: no bueno with pfsense22:16

bioterrorthat's based on BSD and they seem to lag behind all the others :D22:20
stlsaintno cd drive on server22:20
bioterrorI used usb dvd-drive ;)22:20

SAKKED"opening file for writing doesnt work"22:24
SAKKEDwhen i try to edit .config file22:24
mikodoHi, I'm in Canada. An online buddy, in Hawaii, is having trouble with his (? older computer), crashing with Windows. How best to get him a disk for Lubuntu, if he cannot find someone to download it for him in Hawaii? Are the disks offered for free still, or can I purchase it somewhere from (? Ubuntu store) or what not to send to him?22:31
