xixorsup.  I hear kde 4.8.3 is out in the kubuntu PPA.  What is this PPA?01:18
xixorah, I see, https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ppa, nice01:19
xixorso, when I installed kubuntu, much to my surprise, it provided RAID drivers for my RAID 1 mirror array I have on my gigabyte motherboard.  The drive is NTFS formatted, and I wasn't planning on using it.  But since kubuntu automatically found the drivers for the raid and is using them, and appears to have no problem mounting the drive in dolphin... I am wondering: is there much danger using an NTFS RAID 1 in dolphin and/or linux these d01:21

GH0Hm, I also have another issue. About seven times today in the past ten hours, my connections to my server have seemed to die. This has been happening since the latest samba upgrade, and/or possibly today. Is there any way to find out how /why it is happening?01:36
GH0It seems to be an issue solely when connecting to the broadcasted hostname of the machine.01:36
GH0And it just happened again.01:47
GH0As soon as I restart the smbd service, I can access the machine again over the network, via ping, ssh, samba shares, vnc, etc.01:47

artaoanyone live?07:12
artaoas the only user of my computer, does it really matter where I install precomiped binary packages?07:13
artaoI DO want them available to the system in general ...... i was planning on putting, say, Blender, in ~/bin ... or is it better to put it in /usr/bin ??07:14
tsimpsonartao: if you are the only user, it doesn't matter so much where you put it. though, /usr/local is generally where user installed applications etc go07:32
almoxarifei am confused, how does one force an installation from repos to go where one chooses?07:35
almoxarifei have installed 'prelink' and have it running error free, how do i verify in realtime that the prelink process is actually taking place? i have not seen any way07:37
tsimpsonalmoxarife: you don't choose where packages from the repositories go, only ones you compile and install yourself. To see if a process is running, you can use the "ps" command in a terminal, or use System Monitor (under System in the K-Menu) for a GUI07:39
almoxarifetsimpson, been there done that, that does not show if prelinking as occurred07:41
tsimpsonalmoxarife: looks like prekink isn't something that runs all the time, but daily (from cron)07:43
almoxarifetsimpson, thats portion of the process i can verify easy enough, post prelink when the processes are taking place, thats where i want to be looking07:46
tsimpsonunless you want to read about ELF file headers and dive in deep into what prelink actually does, I guess you'll just have to trust that it's done it's job07:47
almoxarifetrust? :)07:48

danielo_hey everybody.12:41
danielo_I would like to ask you about hibernating system on 12.0412:41
danielo_when I click in menu, shutdown, hibernate12:42
danielo_it only lock my screen with screen saver12:42
danielo_when I give the command "pm-suspend" it works from root only12:43
danielo_can anybody help to resolve it?12:43
ForgeAusdanielo_:  I think its only meant to work from root12:58
ForgeAusso maybe when you run it you should sudo first?12:58
danielo_right12:58
danielo_but why it doesnt work from kmenu with normal user?12:58
danielo_hibernation doesnt work for a normall user12:59
ForgeAusuh oh, I see, I can't answer that, mostly because I don't know13:01
BluesKajHiyas all13:01
ForgeAushey BluesKaj how are you?13:04
ForgeAusI'm in deep trouble here, my kubuntu isn't usabale again :(13:04
BluesKajhi ForgeAus , fine thanks , and you ?13:04
ForgeAusand I have no idea whats going on13:04
shaopodo you know a tool for merging pdf's?13:04
ForgeAusit seems like everytime I fix something something even worse goes wrong13:04
ForgeAusmerging pdf's uh I remember reading something about that, a proggy that splits and merges them but I think that was for OSX13:05
BluesKajForgeAus, ok , what state are in atm , do you have a desktop ?13:05
ForgeAusBluesKaj:  would you like me to start from the start or just with the problem I have now?13:05
ForgeAusI ahve a desktop from the live CD if that helps any :)13:06
ForgeAusbut not from my HDD install13:06
danielo_so anyone knows how to make hibernate work for a normal user13:06
danielo_?13:06
ForgeAusdanielo_: you might want to check if there is a group for it?13:06
mydogsnameisrudyhave not liked using hibernate , seems to lock up system to much13:06
BluesKajwell, it would be good to know what happened and what you did to fix it , ForgeAus13:06
ForgeAusBluesKaj: well it all started from policykit getting in the way, instead of the normal kdesudo prompt I get, (I htink when I installed appler it switched it to policykit) ...which wanted my ROOT (lowercase I only capitalized for emphasis) password instead of my sudo password13:08
ForgeAusso I did a sudo passwd root, which gave me an error (this is a long story, only around half way there)13:08
danielo_yes I dont like hibernate to, but suspending to ram doesnt work at all13:08
danielo_:(13:08
ForgeAusI forgot the error but basically it told me it was reporting me! ...13:09
ForgeAusI had a desktop at that stage, but I was removed from most of my groups13:09

ForgeAusoh thats right the eroor said forgeaus (my user of course) isn't in sudoers and that a report of the incident was generated (something to that effect)13:10

danielo_but it dosent work13:11
ForgeAusfound backup copies of gshadow, passwd groups and shadow in /etc13:11
ForgeAusso I replaced them after some readwrite mount ... but13:11
ForgeAuswhen I tried to log back into my desktop13:11
ForgeAusnow I have a different issue, entirely, not sure if its some kind of malware or just a graphic driver issue, KDM itself works fine ...13:12
mydogsnameisrudyForgeAus:  um that sounds painful ;)13:12
ForgeAusbut I can't get to (its called a virtual terminal when you alt - F1/F2, etc? right) because no text screen seems to work at all which is really freaking me out13:12
ForgeAusand KDM doesn't get me to a desktop I think it accepts the login the screen goes to change modes, blanks for a bit, but returns back to a kdm login instead of a desktop13:13
ForgeAusso basically my Kubuntu is unusable13:13
BluesKajfor yeah , aTTY , ,,did you try sudo service kdm restart ?13:13

ForgeAusany particular packages to check?13:16

ForgeAusdoes that just do a dpkg reconfigure -a kinda thing?13:18
ForgeAuskeel control+alt+F1 doesn't work13:18
ForgeAusI get a black screen but no text, just some odd cutoff graphic which makes me wonder if its video drivers or something?13:18
ForgeAusor some kind of malware?13:18
ForgeAusits cut off at where I would expect the first line of text to finish, oddly enough so I guess thats vaguely encoraging13:19
ForgeAusuh blueskaj whats supposed to be in sudoers?13:21
ForgeAusand what should be permissions on the files in /etc groups, shadow, gshadow and passwd13:22
ForgeAuscould that be why I can't log in?13:22
danielo_did You use ever tuxonice?13:22
BluesKajForgeAus, I don't have much experimce in that area of users and groups , since I'm the only user13:23
ForgeAussame here I'm the only user13:23
ForgeAuscan you just check your sudoers file and om me if theres a line that includes your username13:24
BluesKajForgeAus, the reair dialog in the recovery kernel tries to fix any and all broken packages13:24
ForgeAusalso check if theres a /etc/sudoers.d file13:24
BluesKajrepair13:24
ForgeAusbluesKaj I don't think I got broken packages13:24
ForgeAusbut it might reconfigure something to fix I don't know13:25
BluesKajyou mighr since you have no X13:25
ForgeAusuh I'm going to try a few things13:25
ForgeAuscan you run a command kdesudo kate /etc/sudoers and look through the file, probably at the very end there might be a line that mentions your user, don't save or make any changes though13:26
ForgeAusI guess the line either the line %admin  ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL and/or %sudo   ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL includes everyone in admin group as a sudoer13:28
ForgeAusthats the only thing I can see in there that would refer to my user13:28
BluesKajForgeAus, my sudoers file uses the no PW command , but I'll check13:29
ForgeAusso i think its not reading my group and users right, those files so I'm going to try permission changes and reboot, then if that not work repair13:29
ForgeAusno PW? hmm ok did you modify it or something? I don't see that here, but I'm at the end of the file, brb checking13:29
ForgeAusits pretty short, it also mentions a sudoers.d which I don't seem to have13:30
BluesKajyes I modded the sudoers wth vi , got tired of the constant pw requirements13:31
ForgeAusnice but ignore that , it doesn't help me right now13:31
=== matthew is now known as Guest1235
ForgeAusno lines that refer to your user? I guess those too that start with %admin and %sudo count them in automatically, mine is pretty short actually13:32
ForgeAusit only has around 29 or so lines13:32
BluesKajForgeAus,13:33
BluesKaj# Members of the admin group may gain root privilege %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL13:33
ForgeAusyeah13:33
ForgeAusok so my admin group isn't working I guess13:33
ForgeAusso now I gotta fix permissions13:33
ForgeAusthats next step right?13:33
ForgeAusI fixed teh files by copying a backup version it saved13:33
ForgeAusbut the permissions on those files I guess are wrong13:34
BluesKajlooks like you got into a can of worms when you had trouble with policykit13:34
ForgeAusso permissions on my sudoers file say -r--r----13:34
ForgeAusyeah it does13:34
ForgeAusbut its changed things in my system so I'm just following my nose trying to unchange them :)13:35
ForgeAusit was quite rude of it to remove me from groups and stuff that I should have been in13:35
BluesKajnot an area of expertise for me13:35
ForgeAusok in dolphin (details view) you can add a permissions column13:36
ForgeAusor you can use the command ls -l I think it is with a filemask like su*13:36

forgeausand if you want help for virtualbox, I think there's a vbox channel16:52
cbrunoshi16:56
cbrunoswill kde 4.8.3 be available on kubuntu 12.04 through the official repos eventually, or will I need to add the kubuntu updates ppa?16:57
ybitforgeaus: huh... i wonder if the vboxusers group had been created before or after the new virtualbox installation16:59
ybitforgeaus: there is a vbox channel16:59
ybiti just state problems in here for other kubuntu users who might come across the same problem17:00
forgeauswhat was your problem?17:00
ybitlife or kubuntu problems? ;)17:01
ybitone sec17:01
ybitcbrunos: i don't know17:02
* ybit wonders how stable the kubuntu updates ppa is 17:02
forgeausits ok I don't need to know I had enough problems of my own17:02
xixorcbrunos: no idea.  the fact that 4.8.3 is in the staging area of the kubuntu ppa implies to me that it is slated for incorporation into the official repository.  not sure on the time frame for that though17:03
forgeauscbrunos: well the other way would be to get a rolling release distro lol :)17:03
cbrunosthanks for the details, xixor and ybit17:03
forgeausbut kubuntu isn't one of those so either A) wait, or B) find a ppa17:03
cbrunosforgeaus: no thanks, I already used Arch in the past, and it was not always a pleasant experience17:04
xixorybit, cbrunos : I updated to 4.8.3 on the kubuntu ppa.  I haven't had a chance to use it, but I am a bit apprensive now that I think about it..  I hope it is stable17:04
ybithttp://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.8.3 implies that packages are moved from unstable ¿or dev branch? to stable branch as they become...stable17:05
forgeauscbrunos: I was thinking more along the lines of PCLinuxOS17:05
forgeausbut yes well arch well I only installed it as a chroot, so it was kinda, not much use to me17:05
ybiti'm not sure how kubuntu decides to upgrade the kde release.. maybe when all the packages have been tested?17:05
forgeausstill pacman was an experience17:05
cbrunosforgeaus: I could take a look at it, but for now, I do not see the benefits in changing distros17:05
forgeauscbrunos: neither do I why do you think I'm using Kubuntu? :)17:06
forgeausunlike you I don't so much care how recent or not its KDE is so much ...17:06
ybiti tested ~10 kde distros in the past couple of months and i'm here now17:06
forgeaushmm in that case I probably should look at going mint17:06
ybiti'm just more productive in kubuntu17:07
ybitfedora's community is awesome17:07
cbrunosactually, I could live without any update to KDE SC, but since 4.8.3 seems to be mainly bugfixes, it would still be nice to eventually get it17:07
forgeausKubuntu also feels far more integrated than something like PCLinux does17:07
ybitand a lot of the opensuse guys are great17:07
forgeausPCLinux feels like the KDE is less deeply part of the OS,17:07
forgeausugh RPM distros! EEK!17:08
ybitmandriva has the prettiest start menu17:08
ybit...but you can build SimpleWelcome in kubuntu..17:08
forgeausI read something that KDE5 is coming at some point17:08
forgeauskinda breaks the whole KDE4Win and KDE4Mac though :)17:09
ybitcheck out their start menu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-qUtor42Ek17:09
ybitlove the integration of nepomuk in their document view17:09
cbrunosI barely use the start menu17:09
cbrunoskrunner is pretty nice17:09
ybitsame, but i was looking for something to hand out at booths17:10
cbrunoshum ok17:10
xixorybit: I've been wanting to try opensuse.  I am mainly a kubuntu or debian user myself17:10
ybitxixor: i like opensuse a lot.. someone needs to fix webpin, they ship it broken17:10
forgeausthat is not a start MENU thats gnome17:10
forgeausubuntu has that17:10
ybitand have been for several releases17:10
christian___#ubuntu17:11
ybitforgeaus: that is a start menu, that isn't gnome17:11
forgeausbut its default is unity instead17:11
forgeauswell then its some minor customization of Gnome then17:12
ybitlol, no it isn't, this was out way before any of the other implementations :)17:12
forgeausok then gnome drew its inspiration from that then17:13
ybiti dunno, often everyone is thinking the same thing at the same time...17:14
Ezimybit, mandriva was before veery polished kde distro. hope rosa team can make it good again.17:17
Ezimbut then again we always have the best ubuntu based kde distro. kubuntu :).17:18
eurmzxIs there any KDE Video Player that automatically downloads subtitles, kinda like the VLC plugin?17:22

Randomuser999913Hello. I had firefox installed and added the Icon from Kickoff launcher to the panel. Having removed Firefox using the dpkg command from terminal, I seem to be unable to remove the firefox icon from the panel. If I start it, it claims I'm missing a .desktop file under ~/.local/share/applications named firefox.desktop. I tried to recreate the file, but it refused to remove the icon still (I have googled about this). I tried to reinstall firefox and20:17
Randomuser999913 run it, but I still cannot remove it from the panel. I click on the litle "X" icon and it shows "Remove Icon" but nothing happens. Help?20:17
Randomuser999913I'm using KDE 4.8 under Kubuntu 12.0420:18
lordievaderGood evening20:20
EzimRandomuser999913, have you tried unluck the panel?20:20
Ezimthats why you can not remove icons on the panel20:20
Randomuser999913Yes, I have. if I hadn't I wouldn't have been able to find the "x" to remove the icon.20:21
Randomuser999913I'm not new to linux, although I'm pretty new to KDE (As in this is the first time I'm using it as a DE). It seems to be a bug. I can reproduce this by removing any desktop file,  and if I reinsert them, I cannot remove the icon still. I did some googling, and it looks like this was a bug that was fixed a while back, although apparently it wasn't.20:22
EzimRandomuser999913, can you take screenshot and show us?20:22
Randomuser999913What file do I have to manually edit, or is there some other way?20:22
EzimRandomuser999913, are you using kde 4.8.2 or 4.8.3 from the ppa?20:23
Randomuser9999134.8.3 from the PPA. I used 4.8.2 but upgraded to see if that bug would be fixed. It isn't :x20:23
EzimI am running 4.8.2 with no such problem20:24
Randomuser999913http://osdir.com/ml/plasma-bugs/2011-12/msg02383.html20:24
Randomuser999913I'm not the only one that has had this experience, but AFAIK, it had been fixed.20:25
EzimRandomuser999913, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=146924320:25
Ezimyou can try zoels answer20:26
Randomuser999913Ok, will try now20:26
EzimRandomuser999913, or if you wanted. add a new standard panel.20:28
Ezimthats the easiest way20:29
Randomuser999913Well, I did it and had a fresh reboot.I now got a standard kde desktop.20:32
EzimRandomuser999913, good. now add things you like :).20:37

Lee2010Does anyone know why the version of clementine in the repos doesn't support spotify?23:52
ResistanceLee2010:  that'd be a question to ask the maintainers of that program i think23:53
Resistanceperhaps they removed the support from the source code?23:53
Lee2010I wonder why they would do that...23:56
Resistancei'm not one of the devs, and i dont know whether it was removed or not, you'd have to check with their dev(s) or file a bug against it if you think it should have support23:57
Resistanceand if you file a bug, and they removed that support, then they'll mark it as won't fix23:57
