allu2Hello i'm total audio/midi noob trying to get external "piano keyboard" connected to soundcard via gameport to produce sound, where should i start?12:32
fidel_allu2: i doubt i can really help you - but what software are you planning to use on the pc/linux side?12:37
allu2fidel_: well i don't really mind what software i'll use, i just need to produce the "piano" sound while playing the keyboard so i could practice to play some simple songs on piano :)12:39
fidel_produce the piano sound?12:39
allu2i've sometime before managed to do this with rosegarden and some magick with timidity and jack but as now i didn't have then any idea what i was doing12:39
allu2fidel_: i mean that when i press key on the piano keyboard i could hear the corresponding piano key played from my headset12:40
fidel_you mean that you plan to play on the external piano which should send midi-data to your pcs-soundcard - which passes them to WHAT?12:41
fidel_mentioning a headset (which can be connected to both areas) isnt that helpful ;)12:41
allu2fidel_: hum as i said im noob with this kind of thing :P but what i want to achive is that i could practise playing piano, so by pressing key on the midi device piano keyboard, i should hear sound ^^12:44
allu2i don't really know means to do this, i've managed to do it somehow with rosegarden and timidity++ and jack but i have no idea who and what i was doing :P actually i'm not even sure my system sees the keyboard connected to the soundcards gameport.. :S12:46
fidel_allu2: pressing a key on a keyboard and hearing sound doesnt need any connection to a pc12:47
fidel_thats why i am asking what you really want to achive12:47
allu2fidel_: i want to hear sound like i'd hear from "regular" piano12:47
fidel_i give up12:47
allu2fidel_: i have something like this http://www.musicmasterworks.com/MidiPiano.jpg but it doesn't have any "regular keys" just the piano ones12:48
allu2fidel_: i have it with cable connected to my soundcard12:49
fidel_i gave up already12:50
fidel_no need to highlight me further ;)12:50
allu2:(12:50
fidel_focus on the channel & try to rephrase your real issue as clear as possible12:50
fidel_with some luck you'll find someone willing to help12:50
fidel_right now: your question is far away from really clear ->12:51
fidel_http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html12:51
fidel_good luck ;)12:51
allu2urgh i don't understand how i'm not clear :S i mean when a total noob has a midi piano device and a computer, obviously s/he wants to "play piano" with them. not do anything more complicated then to hear the generic "piano sound" when pressing keys in the midipiano :S12:53
allu2,12:57
len-dtallu2, are you still there?14:14
len-dtallu2, it sounds to me that you have a midi keyboard that you wish to use to play sound from a soft synth on your computer.14:15
len-dtprobably the soft synth to use is qsynth.14:17
len-dtallu2, If you have done this before, then I would guess you have the adaptor cable for your game port and you can plug you keyboard into the plug marked in.14:18
len-dtallu2, Then you need to start qjackctl. You will use this for both setting up and running jack, but also for connecting your keyboard to the synth and the synth to the sound output.14:22
allu2len-dt: ok i'm here now14:24
allu2i'm installing now some packages as i just reinstalled ubuntu14:25
len-dtThere are three packages that will help. (four including jack)14:28
len-dtWhich ubuntu are you installing?14:28
allu2i just installed 12.0414:28
allu2ok i installed  qsynth qjackctl14:28
allu2trying to start jack via qjackctl but it fails14:30
len-dtallu2, sorry, I meant if you were using ubuntu desktop ubuntustudio or xubuntu14:30
len-dtallu2, do you have jack installed?14:30
allu2i suppose it was installed as dependency for qjackctl but i can check..14:31
allu2paste from the error log of qjackctl http://paste.ubuntu.com/973635/14:31
allu2jackd is installed14:31
len-dtYup. jack is there. I would guess you have ubuntu desktop. it looks like pulseaudio is getting in your way.14:32
allu2len-dt: incase its some help here's the paste of lspci http://paste.ubuntu.com/973640/ showing the gameport on last line14:33
allu2len-dt: yep basic ubuntu14:33
len-dtlet me try something14:33
len-dtallu2, Ok it looks like qsynth can run with pulseaudio as its backend. So we don't need to start jack... maybe.14:35
allu2ok i changed the driver in qsynth to pulseaudio14:35
len-dtallu2, in qjackctl there is a button called connect. If you hit that you should get a connection window.14:35
allu2ok14:36
len-dtallu2,  there are three tabs on there, you want the ALSA tab14:36
allu2ok, i see it14:36
len-dtallu2, on the left side you should see your gameport. Mine says ensoniq audio pci.14:37
allu2http://ubuntuone.com/31SC19ayJ1z7xgJxzqhMbV screenshot14:38
len-dtand on the left you should see qsynth14:38
allu2ok i think i see them, the SB live! one14:38
len-dtYup. click on the EMU10 and click on the fluid synth input port on the right14:39
allu2heh there is green light that flashes when i press any key on the piano keyboard in qsynth ^^14:39
allu2ok, i pressed "connect" and line appeared between14:39
len-dtgood so far14:40
len-dtno sound?14:40
allu2and now qsynth seems to capture presses from the keyboard14:40
allu2nope, no sound just light14:40
allu2len-dt: might be helpful http://paste.ubuntu.com/973660/14:40
allu2no preset = ?14:41
allu2i think i'm missing soundfonts14:41
allu2or well its empty in the qsynth14:41
len-dtOh ya, i forgot.14:41
len-dton qsynth click setup and select the soundfonts tab.14:42
allu2ok14:42
len-dtselect open. Mine came with with two14:43
allu2there is one so i select it14:43
len-dtdo you see any soundfonts in there14:43
len-dtgreat14:43
len-dtSelect yes14:44
allu2ok it asked to restart so i did and then i went back to qjackctl and did the connectiong thingy again :)14:44
allu2now i hear sound :D14:44
allu2now i just selected my headset output from sound settings and everything works just as i wanted! Thank you len-dt  :)14:44
len-dtglad to have helped.14:45
allu2len-dt: any way i could save these settings? so it would work out of boot?14:45
len-dtqsynth should keep the same sound font. but I think you will have to connect the midi input to the synth when it starts.14:46
allu2ok i think i'll manage :) thanks again14:46
len-dtI'm not relly sure... I'm a guitar player...14:47
johnny|Someone recommended I come here for some help with my microphone input.19:57
johnny|the snd-hda-intel doesn't seem to be listing any mics as a capture device. The card in question is on board audio mic. An HD Azalia card.19:58
wxli'll fill you in on what i know20:00
wxlsound works in general through camera and nvidia (not on board) card20:00
wxloh you guys are over there now ;)20:00
nintethi22:10
ninteti know this doesnt belong here, but does anyone know why i cant get sound in a VM with stock Ubuntu 12?22:11
ninteti have switched OS trying to get sound working in kquemu  vm22:11
nintetsound is really important...22:11
j0hnhi22:21
j0hni just installed ustudio22:21
j0hnbut now i want to use the sound generators - but i dont know how to start them22:21
j0hncan anyone help me?22:21
len-dtj0hn, which ones do you want?22:22
len-dtHow are you controlling them?22:22
j0hnbest: all of them :D22:22
j0hni think the problem ist that my ?jackd? isnt running?#22:22
len-dtj0hn, they have all worked for me... though I find yc20 takes more than my cpu can give.22:23
j0hnlen-dt: by default?22:23
len-dtjack is started with qjackctl22:23
j0hnlen-dt: do i have to configure jack first?22:23
j0hnor just have to klick start?22:24
len-dtI would.22:24
j0hnconnecting the midi bus with my soundcard?22:24
len-dtare you using it as the back end for a sequencer or to play with a keyboard?22:24
j0hni have i midi-keyboard on my side#22:24
j0hnand its shown in jack22:24
j0hni think i will have to look for a jackd tutorial22:25
len-dtOk, you will want to change the latency to a lower setting ... frames/period will be set at 1024, try 64 or 12822:25
j0hnthanks. i will be back22:26
