[07:54] Hello. Could someone suggest a printing program that uses templates? Thannk you. [07:56] That would be templates for pictures. [09:59] need help [12:32] Hello i'm total audio/midi noob trying to get external "piano keyboard" connected to soundcard via gameport to produce sound, where should i start? [12:37] allu2: i doubt i can really help you - but what software are you planning to use on the pc/linux side? [12:39] fidel_: well i don't really mind what software i'll use, i just need to produce the "piano" sound while playing the keyboard so i could practice to play some simple songs on piano :) [12:39] produce the piano sound? [12:39] i've sometime before managed to do this with rosegarden and some magick with timidity and jack but as now i didn't have then any idea what i was doing [12:40] fidel_: i mean that when i press key on the piano keyboard i could hear the corresponding piano key played from my headset [12:41] you mean that you plan to play on the external piano which should send midi-data to your pcs-soundcard - which passes them to WHAT? [12:41] mentioning a headset (which can be connected to both areas) isnt that helpful ;) [12:44] fidel_: hum as i said im noob with this kind of thing :P but what i want to achive is that i could practise playing piano, so by pressing key on the midi device piano keyboard, i should hear sound ^^ [12:46] i don't really know means to do this, i've managed to do it somehow with rosegarden and timidity++ and jack but i have no idea who and what i was doing :P actually i'm not even sure my system sees the keyboard connected to the soundcards gameport.. :S [12:47] allu2: pressing a key on a keyboard and hearing sound doesnt need any connection to a pc [12:47] thats why i am asking what you really want to achive [12:47] fidel_: i want to hear sound like i'd hear from "regular" piano [12:47] i give up [12:48] fidel_: i have something like this http://www.musicmasterworks.com/MidiPiano.jpg but it doesn't have any "regular keys" just the piano ones [12:49] fidel_: i have it with cable connected to my soundcard [12:50] i gave up already [12:50] no need to highlight me further ;) [12:50] :( [12:50] focus on the channel & try to rephrase your real issue as clear as possible [12:50] with some luck you'll find someone willing to help [12:51] right now: your question is far away from really clear -> [12:51] http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html [12:51] good luck ;) [12:53] urgh i don't understand how i'm not clear :S i mean when a total noob has a midi piano device and a computer, obviously s/he wants to "play piano" with them. not do anything more complicated then to hear the generic "piano sound" when pressing keys in the midipiano :S [12:57] , [14:14] allu2, are you still there? [14:15] allu2, it sounds to me that you have a midi keyboard that you wish to use to play sound from a soft synth on your computer. [14:17] probably the soft synth to use is qsynth. [14:18] allu2, If you have done this before, then I would guess you have the adaptor cable for your game port and you can plug you keyboard into the plug marked in. [14:22] allu2, Then you need to start qjackctl. You will use this for both setting up and running jack, but also for connecting your keyboard to the synth and the synth to the sound output. [14:24] len-dt: ok i'm here now [14:25] i'm installing now some packages as i just reinstalled ubuntu [14:28] There are three packages that will help. (four including jack) [14:28] Which ubuntu are you installing? [14:28] i just installed 12.04 [14:28] ok i installed qsynth qjackctl [14:30] trying to start jack via qjackctl but it fails [14:30] allu2, sorry, I meant if you were using ubuntu desktop ubuntustudio or xubuntu [14:30] allu2, do you have jack installed? [14:31] i suppose it was installed as dependency for qjackctl but i can check.. [14:31] paste from the error log of qjackctl http://paste.ubuntu.com/973635/ [14:31] jackd is installed [14:32] Yup. jack is there. I would guess you have ubuntu desktop. it looks like pulseaudio is getting in your way. [14:33] len-dt: incase its some help here's the paste of lspci http://paste.ubuntu.com/973640/ showing the gameport on last line [14:33] len-dt: yep basic ubuntu [14:33] let me try something [14:35] allu2, Ok it looks like qsynth can run with pulseaudio as its backend. So we don't need to start jack... maybe. [14:35] ok i changed the driver in qsynth to pulseaudio [14:35] allu2, in qjackctl there is a button called connect. If you hit that you should get a connection window. [14:36] ok [14:36] allu2, there are three tabs on there, you want the ALSA tab [14:36] ok, i see it [14:37] allu2, on the left side you should see your gameport. Mine says ensoniq audio pci. [14:38] http://ubuntuone.com/31SC19ayJ1z7xgJxzqhMbV screenshot [14:38] and on the left you should see qsynth [14:38] ok i think i see them, the SB live! one [14:39] Yup. click on the EMU10 and click on the fluid synth input port on the right [14:39] heh there is green light that flashes when i press any key on the piano keyboard in qsynth ^^ [14:39] ok, i pressed "connect" and line appeared between [14:40] good so far [14:40] no sound? [14:40] and now qsynth seems to capture presses from the keyboard [14:40] nope, no sound just light [14:40] len-dt: might be helpful http://paste.ubuntu.com/973660/ [14:41] no preset = ? [14:41] i think i'm missing soundfonts [14:41] or well its empty in the qsynth [14:41] Oh ya, i forgot. [14:42] on qsynth click setup and select the soundfonts tab. [14:42] ok [14:43] select open. Mine came with with two [14:43] there is one so i select it [14:43] do you see any soundfonts in there [14:43] great [14:44] Select yes [14:44] ok it asked to restart so i did and then i went back to qjackctl and did the connectiong thingy again :) [14:44] now i hear sound :D [14:44] now i just selected my headset output from sound settings and everything works just as i wanted! Thank you len-dt :) [14:45] glad to have helped. [14:45] len-dt: any way i could save these settings? so it would work out of boot? [14:46] qsynth should keep the same sound font. but I think you will have to connect the midi input to the synth when it starts. [14:46] ok i think i'll manage :) thanks again [14:47] I'm not relly sure... I'm a guitar player... [19:57] Someone recommended I come here for some help with my microphone input. [19:58] the snd-hda-intel doesn't seem to be listing any mics as a capture device. The card in question is on board audio mic. An HD Azalia card. [20:00] i'll fill you in on what i know [20:00] sound works in general through camera and nvidia (not on board) card [20:00] oh you guys are over there now ;) [22:10] hi [22:11] i know this doesnt belong here, but does anyone know why i cant get sound in a VM with stock Ubuntu 12? [22:11] i have switched OS trying to get sound working in kquemu vm [22:11] sound is really important... [22:21] hi [22:21] i just installed ustudio [22:21] but now i want to use the sound generators - but i dont know how to start them [22:21] can anyone help me? [22:22] j0hn, which ones do you want? [22:22] How are you controlling them? [22:22] best: all of them :D [22:22] i think the problem ist that my ?jackd? isnt running?# [22:23] j0hn, they have all worked for me... though I find yc20 takes more than my cpu can give. [22:23] len-dt: by default? [22:23] jack is started with qjackctl [22:23] len-dt: do i have to configure jack first? [22:24] or just have to klick start? [22:24] I would. [22:24] connecting the midi bus with my soundcard? [22:24] are you using it as the back end for a sequencer or to play with a keyboard? [22:24] i have i midi-keyboard on my side# [22:24] and its shown in jack [22:25] i think i will have to look for a jackd tutorial [22:25] Ok, you will want to change the latency to a lower setting ... frames/period will be set at 1024, try 64 or 128 [22:26] thanks. i will be back
