Optichipcan someone recommend the best way to remove jack?00:17
Optichipwould it be apt-get purge or apt-get remove?00:18
len-dtlet the car down first...00:50
MOSMarauderhi folks02:17
MOSMaraudertopic seems a bit outdated ?02:17
len-dtMOSMarauder, gotta find someone with priv. to change it.02:18
MOSMarauderxD02:18
len-dtLive DVD and no alt install.02:19
MOSMaraudermore important: 12.04LTS version ;)02:25
MOSMarauderusing xfce now...02:25
len-dtYa, that too. Web page needs update too, but that is happening...I think.02:28
MOSMarauderjup saw the note02:28
len-dtThere is a daily build for 12.10 pre alpha now, but there are no changes from 12.04 yet.02:29
MOSMarauderinstalled 1204 in a VM for testing.02:37
len-dtI have it on two of my machines, a desktop and a netbook. I had been testing it on a second drive. The desktop still has the old drive (10.10 I think) but the netbook doesn't.02:42
len-dtI don't have any ongoing projects to worry about, but can boot to my old disk if I need gcdmaster for example.03:05
JZApplesHi!  I'm running UbuntuStudio 12.04 and when I attempt to start Jack i receive an error..."D-BUS: JACK server could not be started.  Sorry."  Anyone have any ideas?  This did not happen with Ubuntu 12.04.04:52
holsteinJZApples: ubuntustudio 12.04 *is* ubuntu04:54
holsteinJZApples: i would try staring JACK as root to troubleshoot04:54
holsteingksudo qjackctl04:54
holsteinif it start as root, then you know its a permissions issue04:55
JZApplesholstein, I did not have this problem on a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 install.05:02
holsteinJZApples: cool05:03
holsteinJZApples: i could suggest just going back to that install05:03
holsteinJZApples: i assure you , they are the same05:04
holsteinJZApples: i can suggest a couple of things such as the step above05:04
holsteinJZApples: im quite sure its either permissions, or a setting in JACK that is not configured to use your sound device05:05
JZApplesholstein, thanks, i'll try that now05:05
holsteinJZApples: im on my way out, so if you need more help try #opensourcemusicians05:08
JZApplesholstein, ok this sounds like a newb question, but how do i run JACK as root?05:09
JZApplesholstein, nevermind i got it, duh05:12
JZApplesholstein, thanks05:12
JZApplesholstein, that didn't work though :(05:12

studio-user603Yeah ok, fine.16:54
studio-user603i have just a question16:54
studio-user603I m trying this distro cause i can't solve issues on ubuntu or debian with my M AUDIO 249616:54
holsteinstudio-user603: ubuntustudio *is* ubuntu16:55
holsteinstudio-user603: that device is supported though16:55
holsteinstudio-user603: i would ask in that channel i suggested, where i know folks use it16:55
studio-user603Well, i m unable to understand how to put sound on classic ubuntu with my card.16:55
studio-user603ya know, for using VLC or youtube or anyshit that does not rely on jack ... and stuff, i m kinda lost with ALSA and other things16:56
holsteinstudio-user603: i dont konw what "classic" ubunt is16:56
holsteinstudio-user603: i woud try pavucontrol16:56
holsteinstudio-user603: adding or usuing ubuntustudio with JACK will just be overkill and not simplify anything fr you16:57
studio-user603Please ;) d'ont be a dick ... ^^ i m talkin' bout' ubuntu desktop16:57
holsteinfor*16:57
holsteinstudio-user603: ?16:57
holsteinstudio-user603: i assure you im not16:57
holsteinstudio-user603: there is nothing called "ubuntu classic"16:57
holsteini am just being precise16:57
studio-user603I think it might be great, cause i plan on switching to linux for MAO16:57
holsteinubuntu is ubuntu16:57
holsteinstudio-user603: try pavucontrol16:57
holsteinthere you can select the device you want to "route" to16:58
studio-user603I have this kind of sound card cause i make music... and i m ready to shit bricks using my Roland GR 55 or my Line 6 gear on linux16:58
studio-user603pavucontrol16:58
studio-user603ok ...16:58

br4ndonHi there17:30
br4ndonI like playing with the latest kernel, and just installed UbuntuStudio. Are there any problem compiling the latest kernel (3.3.5) with kernel config used by Studio?17:32
picicHi how do i install ubuntu studio on ubuntu 12.0417:42
picicanyone17:45
br4ndonpicic: sudo aptitude install ubuntustudio-desktop17:47
picicThank you will this install everything17:48
br4ndonYes17:48
br4ndonYou should install the realtime kernel too: sudo aptitude install linux-rt17:48
picicah thanks.:)17:49
picicaptitude: command not found17:49
picichmmž17:49
br4ndonJust twaek up your lilo config (or grub config) to use this kernel while booting ubuntu studio17:49
br4ndonsudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop17:49
br4ndonsudo apt-get install linux rt17:50
br4ndonsudo apt-get install linux-rt17:50
picichow do i do that lilo grub17:50
picicwhere can i read more about it17:51
picicalso can i force pulse audio to use sample rate of 4800017:51
picicand can you turn on phantom power automaticly in alsamixer when system boots up17:52
picicso i dont have to do it manually every time17:52
br4ndonpicic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_GRUB17:53
aparaattiHi, I'm having problems with jack and m-audio transit... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11917919#post1191791917:54
picicThanks what about my other two questions :)17:54
br4ndonpicic: did you read the doc? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio17:54
picicno :P17:55
picicother application change sample rate so my audio gets corruptet17:55
mbeierlIs anyone familiar with Qtractor here?17:56
aparaattiok there it is apparently https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaudioTransitUSB it's exactly the same problem i had way back :D17:57
picicis it good to install drivers for my graphic card or i just leave it default ubuntu drivers18:05
aparaattiwhat graphics card you have?18:06
picichd 585018:07
aparaattiI would install ati:s drivers18:08
picicfrom  amd or just what ubuntu  suggest18:09
aparaattifrom amd... unless you are hardcore for open source :D or something maybe18:10
picic::P18:10
br4ndonpicic: just compare18:12
br4ndondo a glxgears with the opensource drivers18:12
br4ndonand then one with the ati catalyst driver18:12
br4ndonand see if you get an higher or lower fps18:12
picicwell its a pain to unistall them they brake a lot of stuff18:13
br4ndonpicic: nope, just save your old xorg.conf and restore it if necessary...18:14
picicThanks but where is that loacted :P18:14
br4ndon/etc/X11/xorg.conf18:15
br4ndonI would do that18:15
picicThanks installed studio now restart hope everything is ok.:)18:15
br4ndoncp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old18:16
picic: Unable to locate package linux-rt18:16

br4ndonpicic: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu%20Studio%20Upgrade%20from%20Ubuntu18:17
picicThanks18:18
aparaattino win for me...18:21
picicThanks aparaatti.Appreciate it.:)18:22
aparaattithe ppa is old and is already in the repository18:22
picicTake care, with some nVidia or AMD/ATI graphic card, the linux-rt kernel will not work with restricted driver. It always better to avoid use of restricted drivers if you don't need them. If your aim is audio production (recording, live performance) at low latency, my advice is to stay at the moment on Ubuntu Hardy LTS. Karmic is under testing.18:39
picicFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF18:39
holsteinprecise 12.04 is LTS picic18:39
picicbut i just installed adm driver18:40
holsteinand its a bit too soon for 12.10 to be under testing18:40
picicFFFFFFFF18:40
picicamd18:40
br4ndonpicic: I am currently using the latest amd proprietary driver with the realtime kernel. No problem on my laptop.18:44
picicYeahhhhhhhhhhh18:44
picic:D18:44
holsteini have it in 10.04 with a patched realtime kernel18:44
holsteinwith the lowlatency one from ubuntustudio, it shouldnt be an issue18:45
picici heard RUTE is a good place to start learning linux18:45
holsteinmabye #linux18:45
piciclol18:45
br4ndonpicic: If you want to learn linux, I would advice you to use Slackware. But that' s my point of view.18:46
picicnever tried it18:46
picici tried fedora debian opensuse and ubuntu18:46
picici liked fedora the most18:46
br4ndonAs said many times, Ubuntu will teach you Ubuntu, Fedora will teach you Fedora, Slackware will teach you Linux.18:46
picicok::)18:47
len-dtbr4ndon, I like slackware... started using from before 1.0 (.98 or something) and yes it was a good teacher... but, a lot of the system stuff is not the same as anyone else... like almost the whole of /etc anymore.18:53
br4ndonlen-dt: I agree! But I think it defines Linux more than any other distro18:57
len-dtIf it wasn't for Ustudio, I would probably still have all my machines on it.18:58
br4ndonBelieve me or not, I tried having a hybrid slack/ubuntustudio, like having Slackware64-current with the package line-up of ubuntu-studio18:59
picicwow in dual monitor flash is still out of focus18:59
br4ndonI gave up half-way: too much dependencies to compile, waste of time :[19:00
br4ndonSo I installed it on another partition and dualboot with lilo19:00
len-dtbr4ndon, I can imagine. Probably half the deps were there but because they are not deb style apt doesn't know about them.19:02
len-dtAssuming SW still uses tarball packages.19:03
br4ndonlen-dt: .txz packages :]19:04
br4ndonLZAO compression is more efficient than Gzipping19:05
len-dtSame idea though... untar in / and everything ends up in the right place.19:06
br4ndonThe most atrocious thing was the whole Jack "universe", and the god damn gnome deps19:06
len-dtLike I say, most of the libs were probably there, just apt couldn't see them because apt didn't install them.19:06
br4ndonlen-dt: apt on slack? Never heard of it19:07
len-dtThere used to be a thing called audioslack. It seemed to work pretty good.19:07
br4ndonmaybe you are talking about slapt-get?19:07
len-dtCould be. But same thing.19:07
br4ndonThanks for that, I am going to check for audioslack19:08
br4ndonStill there! http://www.audioslack.com/19:08
br4ndonSeems dead though19:08
len-dtI think audioslack has lost any new development for 5 or more years.19:09
br4ndonYup, dead since 200719:09
irvany idea on 12.04 availability for US?19:09
len-dtKeeping a distro going is a lot of work. ubuntustudio is a lot easier to do.19:10
irvooh :o the website says it's up19:10
br4ndonirv: why wouldn't it ne available for US?19:10
len-dtubuntustudio 12.04 has been released.19:10
br4ndon*be19:10
irvsorry, i meant for ubuntu Studio19:10
irv:P19:10
irvdidn't realize the iso was released!19:10
irvtopic is a bit out of date :]19:10
holsteinubuntustudio *is* ubuntu19:10
holsteinwhen ubuntu releases, US does19:10
len-dtNo one seems to have the permition needed to change it19:11
holsteinthe topic should be updated19:11
irvyeah, just figured there was maybe a small delay as with several other "sub" released19:11
irvreleases heh19:11
irvkinda forgot that it's been out for 2 weeks19:11
holsteinirv: nope19:11
irv:p19:11
irvexcellent :]19:11
holsteinirv: not even an hour19:11
holsteinthey all come out about the same time19:11
irvis there an overview somewehre on the updated packages?19:11
len-dtapril2519:11
irvspecific to studio19:11
holsteinirv: probably19:11
irvalso, any of you ever played with hydrogen?19:11
holsteinrelease notes or something like that19:11
irvwill check around on the site :] thanks19:12
* holstein has used hydrogen19:12
holsteinwe have a new site coming19:12
holsteinits been going up for about 2 years now, so we'll see :)19:12
br4ndonlen-dt: since I tried to learn LFS, I totally value and understand that amount of work :]19:12
len-dthydrogen seems to just work for me.19:12
irvalso, downloads page needs updating, ahh okay19:12
irv:D19:12
irvlen-dt: yeah i've used it in the past, with previous versions of studio19:12
irvas well as normal ubuntu19:12
irvjust wondering how much progression has been made since like 10.0419:13
irv:D19:13
holsteini just google search like this.. "download ubuntustudio 12.04"19:13
irvyeah, there's a link on the main page as well19:13
irvjust not on the 'downloads' page heh19:13
irvi just want to set up a box again for messing around at home. eventually interface with a nice board.. but for now just program some drum tracks to jam to :D19:13
irvhydrogen seemed to be really intuitive last time19:14
holsteinsomewhere downl the page you'll see http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/12.04/release/19:14
irvyeah, i am already downloading, was just mentioning that the downloads page is missing the link to 12.04 heh19:14
irvthx :)19:14
holsteinirv: im sure it is19:14
len-dtUS is being done by a handful of people, part time. Audioslack would require more work because ubuntustudio is ubuntu with some extra packages19:14
holsteinirv: if its a wiki, you can update it19:14
holsteinwe are in the "grab a broom" stages19:14
irvdoesn't look like it heh19:15
irvhttp://ubuntustudio.org/downloads19:15
len-dtholstein, I think it is on the main page...19:15
irvjust referring to that page19:15
irvthere's a post right on the main site though19:15
irvlinking directly to the release19:15
irvi just instinctively clicked downloads heh19:15
irvand noticed it wasn't there19:15
irvdassit19:15
irv;d19:15
holsteinirv: check http://ubuntustudio.org/home19:15
holsteinyou'll see an appology and a link to 12.0419:15
holsteinirv: and the release notes19:15
irvguess i shoudl ahve read further down :D19:16
irvooh, thx19:16
holsteinirv: i think its fair to assume the download link should work19:16
holsteinirv: we are in a stage where its not like the NYC metro where you "see something, say something"19:16
holsteinwe are more in a "grab a broom" stage19:16
holsteinif something needs to be done, and you want to get envolved, feel free!19:17
holsteinotherwise, we are waiting on some higher-ups to push the new site through19:17
irvha ha, i gotcha19:17
holsteinwe have only bad excuses for why its not current19:17
irvi wasn't trying to be a dick :D19:17
holsteinirv: nah.. me either.. just sayin'19:17
holsteinirv: glad you are here!19:17
irvbut for sure, i've used the release for about a year maybe 2 years ago19:17
irvhad some good feedback during that time19:17
irvwanting to take a look now that 12.04 is out :]19:18
holsteini think you'll like it19:18
irvplus i have a box to set it up again now19:18
holsteinim still using 10.0419:18
holsteinbut ive testing 12.0419:18
irvis there a wiki somewehre on compatible hardware?19:18
irvand hardware recommendations19:18
holsteinirv: not one that i trust19:18
irvnot so much comp hardware19:18
irvbut MIDI/boards19:18
irvetc19:18
holsteinirv: the iso is live though now19:18
holsteinthe usual places are just alsa19:18
holsteinhttp://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main19:19
holsteini dont believe it til i see it.. a kernel rev or alsa rev can break anything really19:19
irvother than this chan, any good forums to get recommendations from otehr ubuntu studio users?19:19
holsteinirv: #opensourcemusicians19:19
irvyes, that's the chan i was thinking of :D19:20
irv<319:20
irvtotally forgot about that19:20
irvi'm just thinking like if i'm gonna buy a new board for home, i woudl like to hear waht others are using in their home studios w/ ubuntu studio19:20
irvand how the hardware performs ,etc :) thx19:20
len-dtirv, depends on if you are looking at PCI/firewire or USB19:28
len-dtthen its a money thing.19:28
picicE: Unable to locate package linux-rt19:42

holsteinpicic: i would say you have another package manager open19:45
holsteinpicic: also, just use tabe complete19:45
holsteintab*19:45
picicok19:45
holsteinif you just added a PPA, you'll need "sudo apt-get update"19:46
picicno other package manager is used19:46
picichmm19:46
holsteinpicic: OK19:46
holsteinpicic: im literally going in order of what *could* be the issue19:46
holsteinif you use tab complete, then you'll know what is available19:47
picic:)19:47
holsteinor, use synaptic... or whatever package manager you prefer19:47
holsteinif you added the PPA and didnt use "apt-get update" it wont be listed as available19:47
picicnope nothing in synaptic19:47
holsteinyou can always just go and grab the .deb 's19:47
piciclink?19:47
holsteinOR, just use the kernel you have19:47
holsteinpicic: you should have it from the PPA19:48
holsteinpicic: i dont know what you are trying to get/do19:48
picicim gonna reboot now to complete upgrade to ubuntu Studio19:48
holsteinwhatever it is, the default one will do quite nicely19:48
picicok.Thanks.:)19:48
picicAt2020 works great via xlr19:48
picicnice clean sound19:48
picic:D19:48
picicok gonna reboot cya19:49
mbeierldoes 12.04 use a low latency or -rt kernel?20:22
len-dt12.04 uses low latency20:23
mbeierlthanks, len-dt20:25
br4ndonlen-dt: I like playing aroung with the latest kernel. Do you think compiling 3.3.5 with the kernel config used by Studio would break anything? The doc says it would.20:26
len-dtbr4ndon, that is beyond my understanding.20:28
br4ndonnevermind :p20:28
len-dtSo far as I know they are now just config changes, not actual patches.20:30
br4ndonThere are some interesting additions and improvements sometimes20:32
len-dtYa those configs may do different things in the 3.3 kernel.20:34
br4ndonwell, let's try out20:38
br4ndoni just picked up the default config, and compilling 3.3.5 kernel with it. too lazy to check out the new params. :p20:39
br4ndonSince it take years to do, I'll come back here tomorrow so I'll tell you if it is working well or not. See ya!20:39
br4ndon?quit20:39
