_nonlocalHello. I have what may be a stupid question. I have bought a new computer with an hdmi out which I am presently running through, connected to my TV. The image is smaller than teh available screen space. It is slight but it bothers me. My windows OS (or even my xbox) have a slider in the settings to adjust the image size to fit the borders of the screen. I cannot find this in ubuntu, and googling has so far failed me.Or more likely I have failed it... neverth00:06
_nonlocalI should note I am actually running the vanilla ubuntu interface right now. new hardware seemed like a good time to finally check out unity00:07
babbleTry here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=14866200:07
_nonlocalah yes, overscan/underscan, the jargon I couldn't quite call to mind. Thanks.00:08
_nonlocalOh hello xorg.conf, we meet again... }8[00:17
babblewhat are you outputting to the HDMI display?00:22
babbleis this for media, or something else?00:22
babble(if you're watching videos and whatnot on your TV, it may be simpler to use XBMC which has overscan adjustment)00:23
_nonlocalbabble, I am outputting everything00:26
_nonlocalI dont ghave a regular monitor right now\00:26
babbleif you're using it as a regular display, then a custom xorg modeline is your best bet00:26
_nonlocalthanks. Its funny I just installed xbmc to check if it had an adjustment.00:26
_nonlocal(I am also getting used to this stupid frenglish kbd. Please excuse frequent typos.)00:27
babblethere's a MythTV wiki that may also help00:28
babblehttp://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Overscan00:28
babbleif you have an nvidia card, you may try the nvidia-settings utility00:29
_nonlocalati.00:29
_nonlocalati config has an overscan toggle00:29
_nonlocalbut it is just off or on00:29
babbleif you're using fglrx drivers, it looks like you can specify a specific amount from the commandline:00:30
babblehttp://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?14806-fglrx-overscan00:30
babblepasting from that thread...00:30
babblehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/974774/00:31
babbletry a dpkg-reconfigure with the monitor hooked up and then run aticonfig --initial00:32
babbleXorg will try to be smart and autodetect your monitor for you on a dpkg-reconfigure00:33
_nonlocalthanks. I notice once I installed fglrx drivers... it stopped detecting my tv as tv00:33
_nonlocaland started calling it 'laptop'00:33
aguiteljockey-gtk maybe do this work00:33
_nonlocalaticonfig --tvinfo reports the tv is not connected, which I assure you it is :)00:34
_nonlocalalthough perhaps it is looking for two displays00:34
babbletry a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg00:34
babbleand then aticonfig --initial00:34
babblethe fglrx driver may have just guessed wrong00:34
babbleprobably not - it's probably just guessing from the resolution reported by the TV over HDMI and guessing it's a widescreen laptop display in the absence of a better guess.00:35
babblesee also the manpage for aticonfig:00:37
babblehttp://man.cx/aticonfig(1)00:37
babblelooks like you can force resolutions:00:38
babbleaticonfig −−resolution=1600x1200,1280x1024,1024x76800:38
_nonlocalwhoops, how do I reload the display settings? ctrl-alt-backspace no longer works?\00:38
babblethe safest way I know of is to drop to a console and restart lightdm00:41
babblectrl-alt-f1, and log in00:41
babblethen sudo service lightdm restart00:41
babble...and there's this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1191492700:47
babblexrandr --output <output> --set underscan on (or off, depending)00:48
babble"Could try a overscan correction with xrandr"00:49
babblehttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1849599&highlight=intel+overscan+xrandr&page=200:49
_nonlocalYes, reading00:49
_nonlocalThis seems to be similar to the custom modeline00:49
babbleit's all ways of dancing around the same basic issue, yeah.00:50
babblexorg autodetection in this case is making a bad assumption, so you can fiddle to force it to do otherwise.00:50
_nonlocalxrander won't let me go any bigger than 1920 so I will still have bars on two edges00:51
babbleum.00:51
babble1920x1080 is 1080p00:51
babbleunless you're saying you have a 4k display, you don't need bigger than 1920x108000:52
_nonlocalIt's annoying because connected by VGA I have a pixel-by-pixel option but hdmi I do not00:52
babbleyou said it was on HDMI00:52
_nonlocalthat's just it, I'm connected at 1080p00:52
_nonlocalbut still seeing borders00:52
babble1080p is 1920x108000:52
babblethen you're not outputting 1080p00:52
_nonlocalYes.00:52
babbleyou don't need larger than 1920 horizontal pixels00:52
_nonlocalI am at 1920x1080p. The TV is messing with it I think00:53
babbleif you're using a vga port and not an hdmi port, you're not likely to ever get 1080p00:53
_nonlocalnot vga00:53
_nonlocalhdmi. I have connected to the tv with vga in the past though00:53
babbleyou're not really listening to what I'm saying00:54
babbleif you think you need larger than 1920 horizontal, you don't00:54
babbleunless you have a 4k display (which you very likely do not)00:54
_nonlocalno you're right00:54
babbleif you're seeing pillarbox bars, your computer is not OUTPUTTING 1920x1080 regardless of whatever the television's native resolution is00:55
_nonlocalIt is. I believe the TV is the problem.00:55
_nonlocalin windows I had to adjust down to fit the desktop on the screen00:55
_nonlocalunderscan?00:55
_nonlocallikewise ubuntu was off the edge when I first installed00:56
_nonlocalafter installing fglrx I am boxed00:56
babblesee if you can force the television to do 720p and set a resolution modeline for 1280x72000:56
_nonlocalwhich is better than missing half the dock00:56
_nonlocalbut not ideal00:56

xubuntu149Hi, I was playing with my panel and remove the mail, volume bar icon bar by clicking on removing something called notification plugin I think, it did say if I choose to removie then it's permanently lost, anyway to get it back?02:51
xubuntu149Thanks!02:51

xubuntu149Thank you! It's now fixed.02:53
xubuntu149Now it's strange how I get a extra bluetooth icon mixed in with my mail, volume and network icon, any way to get rid of it?02:57

GridCubedelete one03:05
naryfaxubuntu rocks04:26
naryfaI can customize my ass out here, and it'll still be light and work04:27
heikokokowill there be better support for multiple displays in future xubuntu releases?05:30
koegsheikokoko: what should be better?05:37
heikokokoin short: everything. you can't even disable mirroring in the display settings.05:39
xubuntu646can someone help me with the xubuntu desktop cd under 64 bit vista?05:42
knome!ask | xubuntu64605:43
ubottuxubuntu646: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience05:43
xubuntu646ok in that case...05:43
xubuntu646I burnt the dvd using the instructions on the xubuntu website (infrarecorder)05:43
xubuntu646after that, I tried to do a couple of things with it05:44
xubuntu646first thing05:44
xubuntu646I restarted my computer with the disk in there05:44
xubuntu646and a xubuntu logo showed up05:44
xubuntu646but then it turned into a command line05:44
xubuntu646and then I tried typing some basic stuff on the command line (for lack of anything else to do)05:44
xubuntu646and it is said panic mode or something05:44
xubuntu646and then it froze05:44
xubuntu646second thing I tried05:44
heikokokoif you set it up with arandr or similar, there still is no automatic reaction on (dis)connection monitors and so on. support for multiple displays seems almost nonexistent (or is very well hidden). don't get me wrong, this is not a "your os sucks" rant. I love xubuntu, I'm very well aware that there is a lot of voluntary work behind it. i'm not making demands.05:44
xubuntu646was to reboot into vista05:44
xubuntu646and then I tried double clicking on it05:45
xubuntu646and then it decided to ask me what to name the CD and it formats the cd05:45
xubuntu646so I'm super confused now05:45
koegsheikokoko: any special configuration? triple display with ATI on my workstation is no problem05:45
koegsputting my thinkpad in the dockigstation and automatic detection of the external display is no problem05:46
heikokokokoegs: how did you set it up? xubuntu display settings?05:46
koegstriple display: ati control panel05:46
koegsthinkpad: nothing, automagic :)05:46
heikokokointel graphics here05:46
koegssame on the thinkpad05:47
heikokokolet me try with my thinkpad ...05:47
koegsi have to go to work, but i will read your findings later in the office05:48
heikokokothat test already failed due to lack of a vga cable :)05:49
ronsonolChangelog for util-linux says ddate was removed in 2.11z-3, returned in 2.11z-4, doesn't mention it was again dropped, but isn't in 2.20.1.util-linux05:52
heikokokoon the desktop pc i have no automation there at all. if I connect a monitor, I have to set it up manually each time(, or run the script arandr generated).05:53
ThePendulumWhere can I download Xubuntu?05:54
heikokokothe topic says "Xubuntu 12.04 is out! Download from http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu"05:55
ThePendulumThe ISOs get a 403 and the torrent files (just the torrent files, not their actual contents) stop downloading halfway05:55
ThePendulumIf it was that easy I wouldn't be here, lol05:55
knomeThePendulum, which image?05:55
ThePendulumNvm, managed to find a copy05:55
knomewhat iso gives 403 ?05:56
ThePendulumknome: http://torrent.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/precise/release/desktop/ <-- Both of them, for me at least05:56
ThePendulumThe torrents seem to work though05:56
knomewell that's the idea, that's the torrent server05:58
ronsonolknome, why're they listed?05:59
ThePendulum^05:59
knomeThePendulum, http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/precise/release/05:59
knomeronsonol, no idea, that's something to ask from the canonical IS.05:59
ThePendulumThe fact they're listed surely is a tad confusing05:59
knomebut it's still the torrent. server06:00
ronsonolI always do the torrent anyway.  Just to irritate my ISP with *legit* torrents. :)06:01
xubuntu646so after I burnt that desktop CD, vista tried to rename/reformat it instead of actually running it.  Do you think I burnt it correctly?  I used InfraRecorder as suggested...06:02
ThePendulumxubuntu646: You can run it by booting from it06:03
ThePendulum(to avoid Windows completely)06:03
xubuntu646What is the expected behavior at that point?06:04
xubuntu646For me it opened a command prompt,06:04
xubuntu646but when I tried "ls" it said it was entering panic mode06:04
xubuntu646and  then computer crashed06:04
ThePendulumYou should see a GUI installer and be able to install Xubuntu (either overwriting Windows or installing it alongside)06:04
xubuntu646hmm06:05
xubuntu646I saw the xubuntu logo06:05
xubuntu646and a loading bar moved for about 5 min06:05
xubuntu646but then the screen turned black06:05
xubuntu646and this prompt just came up06:05
ThePendulumStrange...06:05
ThePendulumI don't know if the disc may be faulty06:05
xubuntu646I didn't know what I was supposed to type into the prompt06:05
xubuntu646I tried "install"06:05
ThePendulumI usually just burn the ISOs to the disc directly when on Windows06:05
ThePendulumOr create a USB stick using UNetbootin06:06
ThePendulumNever had issues during instalation06:06
ThePendulumxubuntu646: You shouldn't see a prompt by default at all06:06
xubuntu646for me this is the second disc which did this...06:06
ThePendulumI'm afraid I have to leave for school now. I will be back later today.06:06
xubuntu646so maybe my burner is bad?06:06
ThePendulumxubuntu646: Perhaps, you could try to burn something completely different to find out06:06
xubuntu646o, other things work fine06:06
xubuntu646just this is giving me issues06:06
ThePendulumYour burner should be fine then06:07
ThePendulumI'm afraid I really have to leave now :| I hope the others here will continue to help you06:07
ThePendulumCheers06:07

craigbass1976how do I get rid of the regular ubuntu login screen?15:41
craigbass1976I put xubuntu-desktop on afterthe fact15:41

holsteincraigbass1976: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/how-to-switch-between-gdm-lightdm-or.html15:43
craigbass1976holstein, just principle.  Unity has so driven me nuts that I want it and anything purple gone.  :)15:43
ochosiholstein: that might be misleading, you haven't asked whether he uses gdm15:44
ochosiholstein: ubuntu itself also uses lightdm15:44
holsteinochosi: link what you like.. that link teaches me to choose a different one15:44
ochosicraigbass1976: it could be sufficient to edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and replace "unity-greeter" with "lightdm-gtk-greeter"15:46
craigbass1976Ah.  And what's the widget-ish thing down bottom that pops up when I hover the mouse down there long enough?15:46

rhin0trying to find easiest way/description of getting remote desktop up and running for xubiuntu 10.04 -- was easier with standard ubuntu15:58

Guest54736ok sounds good, how can i get information about my grafic card and how can i find a better driver?15:58

Guest54736how can i install the 3.3 kernel backend?#16:03
holsteinGuest54736: you can always look for a live CD that has the kernel you are looking for to see if that is actually going to be helpfu16:05

holsteinGuest54736: you are proposing that the 3.3 kernel will help.. im proposing finding *any* live CD that has that kernel16:08
Guest54736ah ok16:08
holsteinyou pop it it.. boot.. test... you dont effect the machine at all.. and you get to see if it *actually* helps or not16:08
