[00:29] ibeardslee: it'd be nice to bring home a nice pile of toys, but I doubt I'll be able to :) [00:31] Cathy has mentioned that ZaEarl will be over at some stage and that she'll be off and then back as well [00:31] opportunity there to sneak things through [00:34] yeah, but I'm in the US this week & have the chance :) [00:35] heh yeah .. especially if you get to use it and that means you aren't actually importing it [00:36] yep [08:27] good evening all [08:37] is there anyone here? [08:39] sort of, brendonjt [08:39] cool hey is there any gorups for ubuntu for people using ppc based computers? [08:40] opps groups [08:40] um, i have no idea, i'm sorry [08:41] ok as i am using ubuntu 10.04 on a Imac g5 powerpc and it runs like a charm was just wondering if anyone here knew if there was a group or the likes in the ubuntu community for it [08:42] I have started my own project on wordpress for linux on ppc [08:45] brendonjt, There is #ubuntu-powerpc [08:47] kcj, thankyou for that [08:47] You're welcome. [08:48] mmm..on a ppc? [08:48] sounds intriguing [08:48] no worries, it is great to be back part of the a team again lol as much as i liked mac osx it didn't give me the freedom that linux does [08:48] especially ubuntu [08:48] Atamira, yip and works like a dream [08:50] under mac os x on a powerpc you could only get firefox up to 3.x then it was not supported install ubuntu on powerpc and get the latest firefox go figure [08:50] i switched to chrome cause firefox tho it works nicely, has too much crap on it for me [08:51] Atamira, sweet can't get that on ppc, just a silly question though in which version of ubuntu did the new fancy gui come in i cant remember the name of it now it is the default desktop [08:51] in the latest release [08:52] opps my bad unity [08:55] unity yeah, came out in 11.04? [08:55] tho you could take it off easily [08:55] now its part of 12.04LTS version [08:55] and its kinda ok [08:58] ok as my computer didn't like unity it just had a white screen in the middle of it and didn't display any icons so went to 10.04 [08:58] yeah, my older machines are the same [08:58] reading the forum is a known feature that it wont run on the older hardware [08:59] so after 10.04 it went to 10.10 then 11.04 [08:59] 10.10 was ok [08:59] 11.04 was a problem and i had to go back to 10.10 [09:00] now ive skipped right up to 12.04 from KDE 11.04 [09:00] ok silly question as i havent done this in a long time with the alternative cd image how do i upgrade [09:03] heh, i burned a CD and it upgraded itself from it [09:04] ok burn the image when it comes it wants to add it to the repository says yes then just apt-get dist-upgrade [09:07] mmm, that wasnt how i did it [09:07] i booted from the CD. the option came up to upgrade..so i upgraded from the CD [09:07] didnt take as long as a full install [09:08] rebooting is an issue for a couple of reboots cause it doesnt power all the way down and hangs [09:08] so i forced it to shutdown ..and it righted itself [09:08] eventually [09:08] ah ok as i said haven't done that for a long time lol, forced shutdown haven't down that in a while either lol [09:11] heh. its worth while only when you need it [09:12] ok dumb question how to do a forced shutdown it that turn the power off then back on ?? [09:13] hold down your on/off switch . it will force itself to shut down [09:13] same as you would do on a windows machine [09:13] works for me [09:13] ah ok thought as much [09:16] was looking for ibeardslee thought he might be on was wanting some ubuntu stickers [09:16] He has them? [09:17] i have some older stickers [09:17] i think [09:17] at oen part i stuck them on my old car [09:18] https://www.system76.com/community/stickers/ sorry if i did wrong posting this link [09:19] powered by ubuntu stickers they are replaces the wee windows sticker on your computer case [09:20] mine doesnt have stickers on it [09:21] i should get some stickers [09:21] hit up ibeardslee tomorrow [09:21] or leave him a pm message [09:21] he'll see it then [09:22] I've actually sent away for those "powered by Ubuntu" sticker years ago. [09:23] Part of me wants a complete collection. [09:24] my bandwidth wasnt the best when i first got ubuntu [09:24] so it was easier for me to use shipit [09:24] my original first version was a developers copy [09:24] before the official release..i still have that disc too [09:25] ran like a dream..til i 'upgraded' to the released version [09:25] my first version of ubuntu was a dvd and when you booted it you typed live for the live version or install to install it [09:26] lol my first version didnt have a dvd [09:26] i didnt upgrade that til much later [09:27] wow memory's as just goes to show how far ubuntu has came over the years [09:28] yep, most definitely [09:30] the shipit project was awesome [09:30] took 12 weeks to arrive tho [09:31] slow..but it was nice to recieve mail from switzerland [09:31] my first ever [09:32] lol yip you got that right [09:32] heh, not alot of conversation in here at this time of night [09:32] its a first !
