[04:46] hi [08:34] morning [08:35] good morning [08:56] ello [08:56] slashbel: hows ye [08:57] grand, how's you? back in the englands now? [09:00] yup [09:01] back since sunday [09:01] and recovering since [09:01] pics look lovely of ye [09:03] thanks [10:50] anyone awake? [10:50] im having a problem with the Canonical partners repository [10:51] the IP for it is listed as in ireland so i though id ask here if anyone else has had the same problem [10:52] just trying to install flash on my liveUSB copy of Backbox2 [10:52] (dont ask) [10:52] Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flash-properties-gtk_11.1.102.55-0natty1_i386.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.191 80] [10:53] Been like that since yesterday, so im guessing its not so much a common problem, as maybe the OS is out of date, and has a bad link to the repository... should i, how do i point it to the right server? [10:54] appreciate any help if anyone comes back to the keyboard [11:10] JEFFfrazerWITHth: how are you trying to install it? [11:10] Have you done an "aptitude update"? [11:11] aptitude? as in upt-get update? [11:11] *apt [11:11] yes, i tried that but it relies on the same server ultimately [11:12] Those packages/files might have been removed (if there's a newer version), and your system might think that those files are still there [11:12] yes "apt-get update" aswell [11:12] that will download the new and up to date file list [11:13] is there a way to reconfigure the server it asks for? i have tried it with an IP in the UK (neighbouring the irish canonical server) but i have also tried it with a south american IP and it still went for the same server, so its not auto... [11:13] running sudo apt-get update now... [11:14] ok, that completed successufly [11:14] what makes you think that's an irish server? [11:14] i who-is'd the IP its in ireland [11:14] oh, damn [11:15] sorry no its in isle of man [11:15] completely slipped my mind as i did it yesterday\ [11:15] No, that's just the company's address [11:15] not where the server is [11:15] from a traceroute my guess is that that server is physically in london [11:15] that's a canonical block [11:16] ok maybe i should try just to check if i get the same result [11:16] but then again i probably will as im getting the same IP wherever i try from [11:16] (using vidalia and firefox) [11:17] in general, ubuntu/debian apt repositories are mirrored to provide load balancing, however it's unlikely that the canonical partner one is [11:17] so, would you consider trying to install something random from the canonical list and see if you share the same problem? maybe list the IP it connects to to download../ [11:18] > provide load balancing ... yeah i thought it would [11:18] it's (legally) very easy to run an mirror of FLOSS software, since there is no copyright concerns [11:18] not so with non-FLOSS stuff in there [11:19] did you get the same result after the "apt-get update" ? [11:19] i will try [11:20] wow, i think it worked but i will just have to check with youtube or something brb [11:21] ☺ [11:21] I've seen that problem happen before. [11:21] i know you must hear this a million times, but thanks it worked [11:22] i have no idea why it failed to help yesterday, maybe i did things in the wrong order... meh [11:22] Basically your computer thought there was a file/package available for download that wasn't there [11:22] thanks a lot buddy [11:22] so if you do the update it'll update the list of available software, and the URLs and the filenames, versions etc. [11:22] they don't usually keep all the old versions of software available for download on all the servers [11:23] Happy to help [11:23] so with this OS i just have to apt-get update and then i can use the package manager, brilliant. you've really helped out a noob, i will learn linux properly one day, but in the meantime there are nice folk like you muddling us noobs through [11:23] If you use the Ubuntu Software Centre it should do that automatically [11:24] it didn't though [11:24] never done it with any other OS and i've tried about a dozen different flavours about 4 of them ubuntu based [11:25] i tried submitting a bug report to the backbox team but i had to register to do so, i didn't, i might go back and register and contribute [11:26] anyway. have a nice day ebel thanks again [11:26] o/ === Daviey_ is now known as Daviey
