studio-Gregim in teh process of installing ubuntu studio to do sound recording and music production. does anyone have any tips or reccomendations for initial config or tweaks?11:39
dlandryQuestion about gladish in Ubuntu Studio 12.04. I can create a studio, set the command lines of the apps I want to come up all configured (Ardour, Hydrogen, a couple of instances of Yoshimi) and I can bring up the apps and shut them down one at a time, but if I shut down the studio with the apps running, when I try to start the studio again gladish seems to just hang. (I can reboot, and start up the gladish studio the first time o15:56
dlandryk, but if I shut down the studio and start it again it hangs -- as long as I shut down the apps individually before shutting down the studio it works, but if I leave the apps up, and try to stop and start the studio it does not work.) ... any ideas?15:56
madziahello is anyone here an experienced ubuntu user and could help me a little with configuration?17:22
plotinohi19:14
plotinoim trying to install ubuntustudio 12.04 on my old19:21
plotinopc where ubuntustudio 10.04 was installed19:21
holsteinlet us know how its failing if it is19:21
holsteintry it live.. should work just fine :)19:22
plotinobut when i try19:22
plotinoi have tried live19:22
plotinobut19:22
plotinomouse not working19:22
holsteindid you get to the desktop live?19:22
plotinokeyboard not working19:22
plotinoi have boot the live desktop19:22
holsteinprobably something removed from the kernel that supported your hardware19:23
holsteindepeding on the age, i might just hang with 10.0419:23
plotino:(19:23
plotinothe age of the machine19:23
holsteinits likely something you can fix easily with your own kernel, or a module19:23
plotinoyes19:23
plotinobut let me ask19:23
holsteini would search around by manufacturer for something in the forums19:23
plotinoi have downloladed and burn19:23
holsteinOR, just plug in a USB keyboard and mouse19:23
plotinothe i386 version19:23
plotino while the processor is an old AMD19:24
plotinois ti correct?19:24
holsteinif its not, it wont boot19:24
plotinoplease the stupid question ..19:24
plotinobecause first time i have boot an error occurred19:24
plotinoa module SIS..something was not inserted19:25
holsteinsure.. if its old hardware, you can run into that19:25
plotinoso what can i do?19:25
holsteinplotino: i would run 10.04 or use a USB keyboard/mouse, or search for a module that will add support for that hardware, or build a custom kernel19:25
holsteinthe kernel must drop support for old hardware at somepoint19:26
holsteinmaybe someone in the kernel team can help you with what support has been dropped from 10.04 to 12.0419:26
plotinook19:27
plotinoas alternative i can update my 10.04 version ..19:27
holsteinplotino: sure, but you'll upgrade to the kernel that doesnt support your hardware19:27
plotinoim very interested in update programs19:28
holsteinplotino: sure... its something you can fix19:28
plotinoas rosegarden hydrogen and also jack server19:28
holsteinplotino: you can also add the kxstudio ppa's to 10.0419:29
holsteinplotino: you can build whatever you want in 10.04 and run them19:29
plotinoinfact19:30
plotinoyou are right19:30
plotinothe point is that i have read on the ubuntu website19:30
plotinothat it's better install 12.04 from scratch but upgrading the old issue (10.04)19:31
holsteinplotino: upgrading wont help19:31
holsteinplotino: you end up with the same unsupported kernel at the end of a fresh install, or upgrading from 10.04 to 12.0419:32
plotinoi keep the old kernel19:32
holsteinplotino: not in an upgrade19:33
holsteinplotino: there might be issues using an older kernel too19:33
plotinook19:35
plotinobut can i use new programs with old kernel ...19:35
holsteinplotino: im sure you will find out19:35
holsteinplotino: what do i suggest if and when you asked?... 10.04 with kxstudio ppa's.. build a kernel... load modules in 12.04 with support... upgrade the hardware19:36
holsteini dont list running a 2.6x kernel in 12.04 there for a reason19:36
holsteinbut, do what you like :)19:36
plotinothanks19:37
plotinobut19:37
plotinoi had a problem19:37
plotinowith hydrogen in 10.04 that i hope tp fix with newer version19:37
plotinowhen i start hydrigen jack fails19:38
plotinoim not able to manage the transport from jack ...19:38
holsteinplotino: try the newer version19:38
holsteinplotino: not a lot of fixes in there realy19:39
holsteinreallY819:39
holsteinplotino: those nerwer version are available in the ppa's i mentioned several times19:39
plotinowhat is ppa?19:39
holsteinhttp://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/KXStudio:Repositories19:39
holsteinplotino: its a way of using updated packages (as i am) in 10.04 (also as i am)19:40
holsteinmy using the prepackaged version from the kxstudio repositories i linked, and mentioned several times19:40
plotinoholstein, you are using 10.04?19:42
plotinoso you can help very much ..19:42
holsteinplotino: thats what ive been implying19:42
holsteinplotino: i use the kxstudio ppa's19:42
holsteinthe ones i linked19:43
plotinowhat i didnt understand if iti is a sort of distro or only packets19:44
plotinoholstein19:46
holsteinypu19:46
holsteinyes?19:46
plotinowhat i have to do?19:46
holsteinplotino: for?19:46
plotinoto add these repositories19:46
holsteinplotino: there are directions19:46
plotinoi wanna use ppa19:46
plotinomusic for example19:46
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Adding_PPAs19:47
holsteinplotino: its not trivial19:47
holsteinplotino: i didnt just click there and add them 4 minutes later19:47
holsteini read about what the packages were and did19:47
holsteini installed them on a test machine19:47
holsteini test removed the pacakges with ppapurge19:47
holsteini dont feel comfortable telling you some paste in commands that can be potentially harmful19:48
holsteinplotino: i used sudo add-apt-repository ppa:user/ppa-name19:48
holsteinin the terminal19:48
plotinook19:49
plotinofirst step for me shall be upìdate 10.0419:49
plotinoafter that i will think about that19:49
holsteinplotino: you mean? upgrade to 12.04?19:51
holsteini wouldnt do both19:51
holsteini would just run 10.04, and add those PPA's19:52
dlandryrepeating a question I asked earlier today .. had to shut down, so if there was an answer I missed it .. sorry ...19:52
dlandryQuestion about gladish in Ubuntu Studio 12.04. I can create a studio, set the command lines of the apps I want to come up all configured (Ardour, Hydrogen, a couple of instances of Yoshimi) and I can bring up the apps and shut them down one at a time, but if I shut down the studio with the apps running, when I try to start the studio again gladish seems to just hang. dlandryk, but if I shut down the studio and start it again it hangs -- as long as I shut down the apps individually before shutting down the studio it works, but if I leave the apps up, and try to stop and start the studio it does not work.) ... any ideas?19:52
holsteini still do it the old fashioned way dlandry19:53
holsteinsounds like a bug19:53
holsteini would see if you can find the maintainer and see whats going on as far as development19:53
holsteinfor me, troubleshooting session managment just adds overhead to my workflow19:54
holsteinand i never trust it19:54
plotinono no only perform the normal update of 10.0419:55
plotinofrom when i have installed it , never updated!!19:55
dlandry ok, thanks ... I'll try a few more combinations and see if I can define the problem better, then maybe open a defect ... I know what you mean, but it would be so nice to have things work (I suppose I could do the same thing with bash scripts and manually start things and make connections.)19:56
holsteinplotino: i havent updated in a while...19:58
Lucian_Luciushello to everybody :)21:19
Lucian_Luciushow can I install libre office suite on my ubuntu studio?21:20
holsteinLucian_Lucius: i would just search in the package manager of your choice21:20
vltLucian_Lucius: `apt-get install libreoffice`21:27
holsteinyup.. open a terminal, and type that ^^21:29
holsteinsudo apt-get install libreoffice21:29
holsteinor, whatever package manger you are comfortable with21:29
Lucian_Luciusthanx :)21:30
