dasKreechxixor: I think ~/.local/share/applications/default.xml may help00:05
xixorI don't have that file00:07
xixornor a /usr/share/applications/default.xml file00:07
dbc254if apt-get install k3b gives you a list of files it shouldn't before downloading, what could be wrong?00:08
dasKreechdbc254: could you reask that question?00:08
dbc254trying to get k3b. apt-get install k3b basically tried to turn kubuntu into ubuntu(gnome) and I had to start all over00:10
dasKreechdbc254: So installing k3b asked you to install ubuntu-desktop ?00:12
dasKreechxixor: do you have the ~./local/share/applications directory?00:13
dasKreechWhat's starting all over involve?00:14
xixordasKreech: yes, I have that, and a /usr/share/applications directory.  I have a ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, and a /usr/share/applications/defaults.list files00:14
dasKreechxixor: what;s in the mimeapps.list for inode?00:15
dasKreechdbc254: what is starting over?00:15
xixordasKreech: inode/directory=dolphin.desktop00:16
dasKreechand you have a dolphin.desktop in your path?00:17
xixorI'm not sure, I have a dolphin.desktop file, I don't think it's in the path00:18
dasKreechdbc254: can you try apt-get install k3b again and pastebin the list of files it's asking to install?00:18
dasKreech !pastebin00:18
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.00:18
dasKreechxixor: That could be an issue then00:18
xixordasKreech: I have a /usr/share/applications/kde4/dolphin.desktop  file, but /usr/share/applications isn't in the PATH00:18
dasKreechxixor: Umm ok not sure if that's to the spec :)00:25
dasKreechxixor: what happens if you type xdg-open ~00:25
dasKreechdbc254: are you ok? can you do the pastebin?00:26
dbc254still trying to get k3b. pastebin??00:26
xixordasKreech: It opens the directory in the web browser chrome, and says this on the console: No applications found for mimetype: inode/directory00:26
dasKreech!pastebin | dbc25400:27
ubottudbc254: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.00:27
dasKreechdbc254: Did you click yes for the install again?00:27
dasKreechCancel it if you did00:27
dasKreechjust apt-get install k3b and it will give you a list of files to install copy that list and go to paste.ubuntu.com and paste it there00:29
dasKreechIt will give you a new URL paste the URL in this chan00:29
dbc254http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000034/00:32
dasKreechWow one million posts00:35
dasKreechapachelogger: ping00:35
apacheloggerhai?00:35
dasKreechapachelogger: any explanation for the above pastebin ?00:35
dasKreechIt's pulling in nearly all the ubuntu-desktop deps00:36
apacheloggerno00:36
apacheloggerwhat series though?00:36
dasKreechdbc254: I presume this is 12.04 ?00:38
dasKreechapachelogger: It's precise00:41
dbc254when all I did was apt-get install k3b from my kubuntu 12.04 machine00:41
dbc254yes 12.04 kubuntu00:41
dbc254on a branny new 120gb SSD no less00:42
dasKreechdbc254: can you install pastebinit ? we may want some more information00:42
dasKreechsay no to the k3b install and sudo apt-get install pastebint00:42
dbc254doing now00:42
dasKreechIt shoudln't require much to install at all so if you get a huge list let us know00:43
apacheloggersudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgDepCache::Marker=yes k3b00:43
apacheloggerthat should show the dep resolving00:44
dbc254no file called pastebint00:44
dasKreechah00:44
dasKreechdbc254: sudo apt-get install pastebinit00:44
dasKreechMy fault sorry00:44
dasKreechthen run the command apachelogger asked for and put | pastebinit at the end00:44
dasKreechapachelogger: I was going to check the policy on the package. I'm looking at p.u.c and it doesn't show anything like that00:45
apacheloggerwhat policy?00:45
dasKreechapt-cache policy k3b00:45
apacheloggerpolicies are local priority raiting, they have no impact on resolution other than choosing which version from which source is preferred00:46
dasKreechRight. I was just wondering if taht was being pulled from some other source.00:47
dbc254|typed all that in, but nothing happened00:47
dasKreechdbc254: did you get pastebint installed?00:47
dasKreechpastebinit00:47
dasKreechbleah00:47
apacheloggeryeah, but then that k3b package would have to depend on everything ubuntu-desktop depends on :)00:48
apacheloggeractually even more00:48
apacheloggerabiword00:48
dasKreechapachelogger: I know It's bizarre00:48
dasKreechdbc254: sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgDepCache::Marker=yes k3b | pastebinit00:49
dbc254but it's truly happening. Everything's working. Just want k3b to install work and I'm 100%00:49
apacheloggeroh00:49
apacheloggeractually00:49
dasKreechdbc254: that should return a URL I tihnk00:49
apacheloggeriff the local dependency chain is broken output like that might be occuring00:49
dasKreechWait actually it probably won't will it? the query would prevent the pastebin00:50
dasKreechbah00:50
dbc254 /msg dasKreech typing that in give me the response that I'm trying to send and empty document00:50
dasKreech just run sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgDepCache::Marker=yes k3b and when it asks if you are sure copy and paste to pastebin00:50
dbc254typing that in give me the response that I'm trying to send and empty document00:50
apacheloggerjust tell it no ^^00:50
dasKreechdbc254: Yeah I just figured it out. Take out the | pastebinit at the end00:51
dasKreechIt's going to break the command00:51
apacheloggerwhy?00:52
apacheloggerjust prepend "N" |00:52
apachelogger"N" | sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgDepCache::Marker=yes k3b | pastebinit00:52
dbc254that line asked me if I wanted to install the 3.2gb of stuff again. I said NO WAY00:52
dasKreechAh that would work as well00:52
dasKreechdbc254: right :)00:53
apachelogger(that only works if you used sudo before of course ... otherwise the N will be used for the password query :))00:53
dasKreechdbc254: try apachelogger's way00:53
dasKreechI think that's safe to assume at this poitn00:53
dasKreechpoint00:53
apacheloggeryeah, just mentioning it for the fun :P00:54
dbc254I didn't have to say NO, it assumed it and put me back at a command prompt00:55
dbc254what gives??00:55
dasKreechdbc254: the "N" is the same as you typing in no to the terminal00:55
dasKreechSo you jsut told it no before you started the command00:56
dbc254ah!00:56
dasKreechNeat huh?00:56
apacheloggerbehold the power of the shell ^^00:56
dbc254hahaha00:56
apacheloggerbut the command did not work00:56
dbc254correct00:56
apacheloggerneeds some changes00:56
dbc254still trying to give me Gnome00:56
apacheloggerecho "N" | sudo apt-get install -o Debug::pkgDepCache::Marker=yes k3b  2>&1 | pastebinit00:57
dbc254even a noob like me knew 3.2gb of stuff was wrong00:57
apacheloggerthat should give you a paste url I can look at00:57
dasKreechdbc254: Hooray for noob knowledge ^_^00:57
apacheloggere.g. I get http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000052/ for eclipse00:57
dasKreech1 million pastebins00:57
dasKreechwow00:57
apacheloggeronly 500 of those are accidental pastes of my password :P00:58
dasKreechEveryone knows your password already stopping pimping it00:58
apacheloggertrue00:59
dbc254that locked up the shell window00:59
apacheloggerOo00:59
apacheloggerhit Ctrl and C01:00
apacheloggerthen try again01:00
dbc254I was using ctrl z01:00
dasKreechdbc254: almost the same01:00
apacheloggeractually not01:00
dasKreechRight till you run out of memory01:01
apacheloggeryah ^^01:01
apacheloggerz only puts the task in the background01:01
dasKreechCtrl+C cancels the job01:01
apacheloggerso that you can continue to use the shell01:01
dasKreechCtrl+Z puts it away for later but it's still there01:01
dasKreechYou can type jobs and see how many are still running01:01
dbc254I even downloaded the .deb of k3b. But couldn't install it01:01
dasKreechEverytime you press ctrl+Z that list grows by one01:02
apacheloggerwhich actually fails in case of apt-get because the now suspended job is still holding the lock on the database ;)01:02
apacheloggerdbc254: type fg01:02
apacheloggerthen ctrl c01:02
apacheloggerrinse and repeat until it says there are no more jobs01:02
dasKreechout of curisity01:02
apacheloggerthen try the command again01:02
dasKreechtype jobs | pastebinit01:02
dbc254http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000065/01:03
dbc254fg=foreground?01:03
dasKreechdbc254: correct01:03
apacheloggerhmmmmm01:04
dbc254no more jobs01:04
dbc254all the power is in the shell it seems01:05
dasKreechdbc254: if you would like when this is done I can show you some more of that and how to use it01:05
apachelogger            MarkInstall libgnome2-common [ amd64 ] < none -> 2.32.1-2ubuntu1 > ( libs ) FU=001:05
apachelogger              MarkInstall desktop-base [ amd64 ] < none -> 6.0.7ubuntu1 > ( universe/x11 ) FU=001:05
apachelogger                MarkInstall gnome [ amd64 ] < none -> 1:3.0+6ubuntu3 > ( universe/gnome ) FU=001:05
dasKreechapachelogger: is that from  mivxmaker ?01:05
dasKreechmovixmaker01:05
apacheloggerdbc254: apt-cache show desktop-base | grep -E "Depends|Recommends" | pastebinit01:06
apacheloggeryes01:06
apacheloggereach indention marks a level of dependency01:07
apacheloggermivxmaker is a first level dependency of k3b, libgnome3-perl is a first level dep of mivxmaker etc. etc.01:07
dasKreechapachelogger: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/k3b01:08
dbc254why is it trying to give me stuff I don't need?  I only have a 120gb drive here01:08
dasKreechI forget we can depend on universe now01:08
apacheloggerdasKreech: it is a recommends01:08
dasKreechapachelogger: I saw01:08
apacheloggerwhich due to the apt policy is treated like a depends01:08
apacheloggerdbc254: apt-cache show desktop-base | grep -E "Depends|Recommends" | pastebinit01:09
apacheloggeralso01:09
apacheloggerapt-cache policy desktop-base | pastebinit01:09
apacheloggeralso01:12
apacheloggersudo grep -r Install /etc/apt | pastebinit01:12
apacheloggerthen I should be able to tell you why ;)01:13
dasKreechseems like a --no-recommends would be helpful01:13
apacheloggernah01:14
apachelogger>>> apt-cache show desktop-base | grep -E "Depends|Recommends|Suggests"01:14
apacheloggerDepends: librsvg2-common01:14
apacheloggerPre-Depends: dpkg (>= 1.15.7.2)01:14
apacheloggerSuggests: gnome | kde-standard | xfce4 | wmaker01:14
apacheloggerso either desktop-base is coming from an untrusted and broken source or suggests are being installed by default01:15
dasKreechThe severity is depends recommends suggests right ?01:15
apacheloggeraye01:16
dasKreechok just making sure I wasn't dim01:16
apacheloggerdasKreech: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps01:16
apacheloggerwhat they mean in particular01:17
apacheloggeralso explains why Depends are not optional and Recommends while optional still are installed by default ^^01:17
dasKreechYeah I remember that arguement01:18
dasKreechI just cannot recall ever having used movixmaker01:18
apacheloggerprobably used for the encoding/decoding features01:18
dasKreechBut then I suppose that would be for burning DVD movies which I rarely ever do01:19
dasKreechand I'd probably be using KDenlive01:19
apacheloggerdbc254: apt-cache policy desktop-base | pastebinit01:22
apacheloggerdbc254: sudo grep -r Install /etc/apt | pastebinit01:22
dbc254http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000077/01:24
dbc254http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000078/01:25
apachelogger/etc/apt/apt.conf:APT::Install-Suggests "true";01:25
apacheloggerthere you have your problem01:25
dasKreechThat's the issue01:25
dbc254huh?01:25
apacheloggerdbc254: cat /etc/apt/apt.conf | pastebinit01:25
dbc254http://paste.ubuntu.com/1000080/01:26
dasKreechdbc254: something suggests that Gnome might be a good idea and so it installs it since that's what is set as policy01:27
apacheloggerdbc254: debian packages have 3 ways of defining a relationship with another package ... depends, recommends and suggests ... we only install the former 2 by default, but you configured apt to also install the third01:27
apacheloggerwhich in turn leads to the excessive dependency resolution01:27
dbc254but I wouldn't know how to even do that.01:27
dbc254I didn't dood it, I swear!01:27
apacheloggerI recommend you run `sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf` and make a note not to do anything with suggests and apt anymore :)01:27
dasKreechdbc254: :-) That's fine lets just get it to not do that01:27
apacheloggerdbc254: you have picked that up on some website01:28
apacheloggerfor some reason a few people choose to advertise installing suggests by default, which is really quite silly01:28
dbc254bastages! where's my shootin iron01:29
apacheloggeryou can read the debian url I posted 10 minutes ago if you care to read why it does in fact not make much sense :)01:29
dbc254k3b is missing something that won't let me burn grepiofs??01:32
apacheloggersudo apt-get purge k3b && sudo apt-get install k3b01:32
dbc254but we didn't turn off that pesky thing you guys said I have01:33
dbc254have we?01:34
apachelogger<apachelogger> I recommend you run `sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf` and make a note not to do anything with suggests and apt anymore :)01:34
apacheloggerthat command removes the config file thus reverting the installation policy to default, fixing the issue01:34
dbc254I just dood it01:35
dbc254now trying to apt-get k3b01:35
apacheloggerfirst purge though :P01:35
apacheloggerotherwise it won't do anything ^^01:35
dasKreechsudo apt-get purge k3b && sudo apt-get install k3b01:38
dbc254It woiks!!01:39
apacheloggerof course it does :P01:39
dasKreech\o/01:39
dbc254took a bit of figurin by you guys, but VOILA!01:39
dasKreechI need to remember that dependency tree01:39

asdf0hi06:46
asdf0i have a rather strange problem ... i want to remotely shutdown a kde program on a computer but I only have ssh accress to it06:51
asdf0i want it to "soft" shutdown, not just kill it (that would be easy with ssh)06:51
asdf0is there some way to tell the kde application (kile) to shut down without killing it?06:52
SilentDisasdf0: you are looking for SIGTERM, which is the default of what `kill` does.  just a kill pid will send a proper command06:54
asdf0but then kile wont do its cleanup routine (delete temporary files n stuff), right? and in case there happens to be an unsaved file still open it will terminate and lose the change?06:57
SilentDisasdf0: you can also use `killall` with the process' name, rather than it's PID.  so, `killall kile` would find the `kile` application, and hand it a SIGTERM06:57
SilentDisasdf0: ahhh, kile is an editor, correct?  you will not be able to save open work, or force it to save open work, no.  the application will simply do the OS level cleanup stuff (child processes and such), and exit.06:58
asdf0nah i want it to do the application level cleanup stuff (the editor runs cleaning routines for temp files n stuff) on a soft shutdown06:59
asdf0thats why i dont want to kill it ;)06:59
SilentDisasdf0: well... you can ssh in, right?  is kile running on the screen?06:59
asdf0i basically want it to do whatever it would do when i hit the close button on the application itself06:59
asdf0uhm how do i do that ;) ?06:59
asdf0never used ssh for anything but console ;)07:00
SilentDisasdf0: what I'm asking is: you havve the box sitting there, 300 miles away (or whatever), you can ssh into it, and kile is up on it's desktop, correct?07:00
asdf0yes07:01
SilentDisasdf0: you are golden, my friend :)07:01
SilentDisasdf0: you're on another *nix box, correct?  (something running X11) right?07:01
asdf0yes07:02
asdf0i can x forward into the active kile session?07:02
SilentDisasdf0: totally golden.  gimme a moment to suss it all out, I have done this before, but it's been a long long time.  basically, you spawn vlc on the desktop of the running session, then using ssh -X, you launch the vlc client on your own screen.  bam, instan desktop viewing :D07:03
SilentDisasdf0: testing... :)07:05
SilentDisasdf0: log out of your ssh session.  then, `ssh user@server`.  Once in, `export DISPLAY=:0` you are now running apps on that screen.  launch the vlc server, and just vlc in (or,  spawn vlc client over the ssh... whatever) :)07:08
SilentDisasdf0: aargh, sorry, for your log back in, it should be `ssh -X user@server`, sorry07:09
SilentDisasdf0: ye christ, i'm tired.  it's not vlc, VNC goddamnit lol07:09
asdf0how exactly do i vnc in ;) ?07:11
SilentDis!vnc07:11

DFrostedWangi eant anything with a ./ in front08:50
DFrostedWangmeant*08:50
lordievaderDFrostedWang: Ah it just means the current dir. For example if you are in /home and then typing ./something what you are actually saying is /home/something08:51
=== DFrostedWang is now known as ICWeiner
ICWeinerWhat?08:53
ICWeinerNot with a / in front. A ./ in front. Not a directory, a file.08:53
ICWeinerWell, not always.08:53
lordievaderICWeiner: / is absolute ./ is relative.08:55
ICWeinerMeaning?08:55
ICWeinerGive an example, please.08:56
=== carlos is now known as Guest25161
lordievaderICWeiner: /home is allways /home. ./home is relative to where you are now. For example when you are in /home, ./home is actually /home/home. But if you are in /usr, ./home will become /usr/home08:56
lordievaderICWeiner: Do you understand?08:58
ICWeinerSo if I type ./Documents in /home/[myname]/ it would be in  /home/[myname]/Documents?08:58

BluesKajNoiseCounsellor: if you try to do too many partitioning processes in sequence the installer will crash , one at a time worked for me.17:55
BluesKajNoiseCounsellor:  the text mode works best tho ..I always keep an alternate install cd around17:57
NoiseCounsellor BluesKaj: I only planned on doing three, /, /home and swap. I got this entire machine, because it kept shredding windows installs...17:58

canceri practiced much on dos prompt at the win 3.1 time. i use to run every command and then practicing like that i learned a little.19:53
mattias917cancer: Besides all the other online resources, wikipedia has articles on pretty much all Linux commands, with examples.19:54
cancerlordievader: when ever i tried to learn a computer language, don't know why i didn't learned it. perhaps did a little practice on it.19:54

mattias917asfyxia: Thanks. That's easy enough.19:55
asfyxiamattias917, ok. Good luck ;-)19:56
mattias917cancer: best way to learn to program is to try to solve a real problem you have. Exercises are not super useful after you learned the very basics.19:57
cancerlordievader: like you said to use mv, like that thing already comes to mind. i'm trying to be more stable.... just correct me, isn't it need to give command relative to command words. like; in xp 'delete' linux 'remove/rm' etc...19:57
asfyxiacancer, I think this is a useful backup and tutorial (besides a lot of others): http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php19:57

L3top*86 comes from the 8086 chip architecture, which went through several iterations, eventually becoming the 80386, intels first 32 bit processor which is why i386 is sort of synonymous with 32, though it has continued on.. (eg 80486, etc and why yours is i686)... 64 will always be enumerated somehow as 64...21:55
L3topI have no idea cancer. Sorry, completely unfamiliar with ti.21:55

cancerL3top: that's sound, you were correct and about the i686 theory :)21:57
cancerthat's even confusing.21:57
cancerthen from where that i686 come.21:58
L3topas I was trying to say, it is a more modern class of x86 processors. It means that it is 32 bit, but due to processor changes/optimizations, old 386 processors may not be able to run it.22:04
L3topreally it refers more to packages than processor22:05
L3top or their relationship I guess. a little off topic though.22:05
cancerL3top: that was a fine piece of information.22:05
canceryes, i asked in here about, any simulator of kubuntu?22:06
L3topYou could put kubuntu in a virtual machine22:07
L3topThough I am not sure why you would.22:08
tsimpsonit's useful if you want to test development versions without ruining your system, but other than that it's probably not needed22:09

cancertsimpson: i need simulator to learn some kubuntu.22:11
tsimpsoncancer: what are you using now?22:11
cancerKubuntu22:11
xevilI'm running kubuntu 11.04 and ever since an update to xorg, the driver for my Nvidia card reports that it's loaded, but not in use... evidently it's working accel;erated as glxgears runs at a frame rate evuivelent to the refresh rate on my monitor... also Google Earth will load, but never accesses the server... anyone have similar issues?22:11
tsimpsoncancer: then you can learn with your installed system22:11
L3topbecause you have been using kubuntu... and if you are trying to see what needs to be done for your graphics drivers then running in a VM isnt going to help you22:11
tsimpsonif you _really_ want to install a virtual instance, you can use VirtualBox22:13
cancerL3top: i don't mean to fix those graphics issue, those were just..... i love to solve challenging kind of issue in 'related to computer only'.22:14
L3topI think you hardware is so old that vm would bee too resource hungry to make you very happy cancer. It will probably have very very poor performance.22:14
cancertsimpson: i have tried Vm, when i was going for first use.22:15
L3topxevil: I have not heard of there being a problem... so you are saying that the only issue is that it is reporting not in use?22:15
xevilL3top: that is correct except for the issue with Google Earth... I think that may be driver related22:16
cancerL3top: i agree with that, but please exclude one 'very' :D22:16
L3topxevil: do you know which driver you are using?22:17

cancerzekr-1.0.0-linux.tar.gz22:55
cancerit's related to religion.22:55
L3topok22:56
L3topDidn't mean to pry... I was going to recommend something in the repos rather than trying to compile something from source. A tar.gz is a compressed file, so you do not install them as such, you extract them. In dolphin you can just click on it and it will open the archiver, and extract will be an option.22:57
canceri did that.22:58
cancerit's already extracted and in front of me.22:58
L3topnow in the extracted folder do you see a README22:58
canceryes22:59
L3toptypically that will have install instructions22:59
canceri checked that file.23:00
canceri think i have to do a look again over it.23:00
L3topthere are different ways programs are distributed... you may just have to use them, you may have to configure then make, make install them... there may be an automake... you may have to just place the pieces in the right place...23:02
L3topthis is why instructions are usually in the readme23:02
L3topcancer... apt-cache policy zekr23:03
L3topyou can just install it from repo23:03
L3topcancer: sudo apt-get install zekr23:04
L3topyou should always check to see if what you are looking for doesn't already exist before you go through dlding random tarballs and trying to install them.23:05
canceri tried to install it from there but got some error.23:05
canceri'm trying again.23:05
L3topcancer: linux does not suffer from viruses etc inherently... however... if you go off and install random stuff that looks interesting outside of the trusted repositories... you can get yourself into trouble.23:06
L3top!virus23:06

L3topthe right answer is "Oh... I have a trusted way to install software so I will do it that way... and it happens to be a whole lot easier"23:11
cancerL3top: yesterday i was told by ubottu something like not to use/ask in here, come to pm.... that wasn't happened before.23:11
