stuenghi, I had ubuntu 12.04, I apt-get install xubuntu-desktop but how do I make this my default session? instead of unity?00:24
stuengand I dont mean choose a session when I start, I want it default00:24
stuengsurely this is something that is done quite commonly00:30
sankeystueng: http://askubuntu.com/questions/62833/how-do-i-change-the-default-session-for-when-using-auto-logins00:36
sankeyi think it's in your /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf00:37
sankeybut when i used ubuntu 11.10, i just clicked on one and it automatically defaulted to it00:38
sankeyyou shouldn't have to mess with config files00:38
sankeyjust pick one, and bam, it's the defaul00:38
GridCubewhat seems to be the problem?00:44
sankeyGridCube: in ubuntu 12.04 and lightdm, cliking on a session automatically makes it default, right?00:47
GridCubeit should, only if you dont use autologin00:48
GridCubeif you use autologin you need to manually edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and change the default there00:49
GridCubelike this line: user-session=xubuntu00:51
sankeyGridCube: just to clarify, i was answering somebody else's problem :)00:51

GnumaticI have xfce4 on 12.04 (upgraded from 11.04-11.10) and it worked nicely, but now when I start a xfce session I have no window decorations and my keyboard isn't working, my guess is that compiz is starting as a windows manager instead of metacity or whatever and compiz is stomping on my interface. Since my keyboard isn't working I can't type "metacity --replace" and have to kill X.  What can I do to ensure that compiz isn't activated 02:46
holsteinGnumatic: remove it02:47
GnumaticWon't that screw up Unity if I want to use it?02:47
GnumaticI was kind of hoping for a less drastic solution.02:48
holsteinGnumatic: i would just run metacity --replace on startup02:48
GnumaticI would, but my keyboard isn't working in xfce.  Is there a XFCE-specific startup script that I could add that to?02:49
holsteinGnumatic: i would get the keyboard working in XFCE first02:54
GnumaticMaybe if I disable compositing. Unfortunately when I run xfce4-settings-manager from KDE the fields in Window Manager and Window Manager Tweaks are greyed out.02:55
GnumaticBut it seems like I can access the Application Autostart applet in Session & Startup.02:55
GnumaticI disabled a couple of things, I'll try to log in to Xubuntu again, if it doesn't work I can try adding a "metacity --replace" script there. Is metacity the normal XFCE window manager?02:58
GnumaticOr is it xfwm?02:58
GnumaticI guess it is xfwm4.03:01

knomeystesta, if you want to change the appearance, see xfce-look.org (for xfwm and gtk themes) and gnome-look.org (for gtk themes) - however, please note that many gtk themes aren't supporting gtk3 well yet14:46
ystestaknome, thanks!14:47
ystestasure beats searching for packs in the console14:47
ystestao_o however I have just stumbled onto a worrying complication14:48
ystestacan't log in as root14:48
knomeyou shouldn't log in as root.14:48
mips1911it's disabled by default, you can enable it it by setting a password for the account14:48
ystestaI thought I had one14:49
knome!root | ystesta, mips191114:49
ubottuystesta, mips1911: Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo14:49
mips1911that's a bit misleading14:49
knomemips1911, that's to say, enabling root is the least encouraged thing to do.14:49
mips1911freedom of choice.14:50
ystestathanks for the tip14:50
knomeystesta, you shouldn't, not with a default install. use sudo14:50
knomemips1911, of course, but if you have enabled root, you "void your warranty"14:50
mips1911linux comes without any warranties14:50
mips1911and you use at your own risk14:50
knomemips1911, xubuntu has community suppot - but if you enable root and anything bad comes out of it, you're out of luck - it is not supported on xubuntu14:51
ystestaknome, thanks for the tip!14:51
knomeystesta, no problem :)14:51
mips1911knome, I know. Like I said use at your own risk.14:51
ystestafor some reason this whole time I felt I had to log in as root to do stuff in the console14:52
ystestamy ignorance of linux is vast and unprecedented :D14:52
knomemips1911, well, yes, after i told you it's not supported on xubuntu. this is not an argument - please don't tell people to enable root14:52
mips1911ystesta, in that case you should not use it.14:53
knomeystesta, fortunately there is all kind of tutorials and support channels :)14:53
mips1911knome, I did not tell anyone to use root. I just said it's disabled and it can be enabled by setting it's password.14:54
knomeystesta, a good rule of thumb is that if you don't know what you are doing, don't :)14:54
mips1911there is nothing factually incorrect or encouraging in what I said.14:54
ystestaknome, I'll take advantage of that when I break everything again14:54
knomemips1911, okay, to be nitpicky then, please don't do that again then.14:54

=== usa_today[AFK] is now known as usa_today
knomeusa_today, hello?14:55
mips1911knome, ok in future I will tell people to use google. I'm not gonna lie to them.14:55
knomemips1911, no, don't tell people to "use google". you can use the !root factoid, which explains why enabling root account is not suggested14:56
valdur55!root14:56
ubottuDo not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo14:56
mips1911knome, that factoid is false to a degree. Anybody that googles this out of their own free will will get a gazillion hits on how to do it.14:57
knomevaldur55, yeah, "sudo -s" is muuuuch better :)14:57
gordonjcproot with a valid login is obsolete14:57
gordonjcpbasically there should be a script that zeroes out all attached disks if it detects a valid root password has been set14:58
knomemips1911, sure. but that factoid tells they are using it at their own risk and that it is not encouraged - with explanations - which many of the sites from google do not do14:58
mips1911knome, if you look at the link in the factoid it will even tell you how to enable root and this is a official ubuntu site.14:58
gordonjcp"ok, there's a valid root password! rm -rf / time!"14:58
gordonjcproot passwords made sense 30 years ago, not now14:58
knomemips1911, yes, but it is after long explanations and with caution.14:59
knomemips1911, as i said, this is not an argument. please don't tell people they can enable root account, or point them to google. you can use the !root factoid, if necessary.14:59
mips1911knome, ok I will tell them to look at the root factoid which will tell them how to do it anyway. Same thing at the end of the day.15:00
knomemips1911, no, it's not. most people do not want to enable root, they just think they need to because some tutorial or user told them to15:01
knomemips1911, or because they thought there was, or should have been, a root account15:01
ystestagot a really general question for you15:02
ystestawhat is GTK15:02
mips1911knome, I will just point to !root factoid in future and leave them be.15:02
mips1911gnome toolkit I think15:02
knomemips1911, thanks15:02
knomeyes, that's it15:02
ystestais it an alternate theming thing or is it something that runs alongside the default theming thing15:02
knomeactually, gimp toolkit ;)15:02
ystestaI'm an expert in all teminology15:02
mips1911knome, yes gimp15:03
knomeystesta, it is a toolkit that defines how different widgets are drawn15:03
knomeystesta, you need a theme to change the default appearance15:03
knomeystesta, themes basically tell GTK that "you need to draw the button like this" etc.15:04
ystestaI managed to nab a couple and I'm trying to figure out where to put them15:04
ystestaoh15:04
ystestaso GTK manages all the themes?15:04
knomewell, gtk is linked only with gtk themes.15:04
ystestawhat's the other sort of themes?15:05
ystestaxfwm or something?15:05
knomexfwm themes, which control the window borders15:05
ystestahm15:05
ystestabut gtk, that controls more than window borders15:05
ystestahow do I know which ones I'm choosin'?15:05
knomethe buttons, text areas and anything else inside the windows, and usually panel appearance too15:06
knomeystesta, xfce-look.org should tell you whether the theme is gtk or xfwm15:06
ystestaoh it does, but I don't know where to put them15:06
ystestawhere in the settings menu do I find the gtk settings and the xfwm settings15:06
knomeunder /home/yourusername/.themes/15:07
ystestaor is it just appearance and window manager, respectively15:07

ystestaI tried to modify a theme but after I did that it refused to use the GTK colors16:21

laiteor gtk2/gtk3-theming16:23
ystestalaite, modifying one of the window managers16:28
ystestaI suppose that's the correct way to say it?16:29
laiteystesta: gtk-colors are taken by .xpm-files, see http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/xfwm4_theme#from_wikipedia_the_free_encyclopedia16:29
ystestaI might just bite the bullet and make all my stuff16:29
ystesta:| I modified the .xpm files16:29
ystestashooot16:29
ystestalaite, so why would modifying one part of an xpm file change the whole deal?16:30
laiteyou'll just have to take note of colors and edit .xpm manually by text editor to get them link 'real color' and wanted 'gtk color'16:30
ystestaI did that though16:31
laiteystesta: when .xpm are saved by image handling program, like GIMP, it loses gtk links (I think)16:31
ystestaoh16:31
laiteso they have to be manually rewritten16:31
ystesta:| how do I fix that16:31
laiteyou could load original images, take note of gtk-colors from them and use them after you modify pictures16:32
laitealso, that xfce4 wiki page I linked might be useful to read as a whole16:32
laiteyou can e.g. use one .xpm and one .png to form a single 'image' to window border16:33

recon69_lapanyone know how to change the brightness permanently ?20:11
cloirHi. How can I change the... heh. brightness.20:11
cloirActually, the question is: how can I change the brightness without installing the nvidia driver (or other non-free stuff).20:11
recon69_lapcloir: the brightness applet not working for you?20:12
cloirBrightness applet? what brightness applet?20:12
rbrtrecon69_lap, http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36220:12
cloirNote that this is not a laptop.20:12
cloirIt can't find a brightness applet when trying to add new items to the panel. Is it on the repositories?20:14
recon69_lapcloir: it's part of xfce4-power-manager , but might not work on a CRT monitor20:17
cloirrecon69_lap: yep, installed it and although it is a LCD it says: 'no device found'.20:17
cloirSo I need either another way to change the brighness or a monitor that isn't broken. :P20:17
recon69_lapcloir: is there a knob :)20:18
cloirrecon69_lap: on the monitor itself?20:18
recon69_lapI know, so old fashioned :)20:19
rbrtahah20:19
cloirIt has a brightness button, but it's been broken for about 2 years.20:20
rbrtis this a monitor or laptop?20:20
recon69_lapcloir: have you installed the xfce4-power-manager-plugins and added the brightness applet to a panel?20:20
cloirrecon69_lap: yes, "no device found".20:21
cloirrbrt: a normal lcd monitor on a desktop computer, no laptop here.20:21
rbrtoh ok20:21
cloirI know I can fix it installing the Nvidia driver.20:21
cloirBut I would prefer not to use non-free software, since I won't be gaming anyway.20:22
rbrtwell...20:22
rbrtlol20:22
recon69_lapright, back to my issue :)20:22
recon69_lapcloir: try "xgamma -gamma 0.9"20:23
cloirLet's try.20:26
rbrtif you say the driver solves the problem I'mthinking maybe there isn't a way aroudn it?20:27
cloirIt does not fix it (probably because it changes gamma but not brightness) but it definitely helps.20:27
cloirSo it's a good workaround for the time being, thanks recon69_lap.20:28
recon69_lapgod, I forget the simplest stuff, how to get to etc/rc.local20:29
rbrtcloir, http://linux.die.net/man/1/xbacklight20:31
rbrtlongshot20:31
rbrtlol20:31
cloirrbrt: thanks!20:32
rbrtwe've moved beyond xubuntu at this point lol20:32

cloirSo... I've made a new partition, using mkfs.ext4 on /dev/sda3, and it automatically shows up on my Desktop. However, only root can write to it, how do I give all users permissions to read/write to this new partition?21:21
Unit193If it's already got a entry in !fstab, just edit that.21:25
rbrtcloir, is itm ounted?21:29
rbrtmounted21:29
rbrtcloir_, if it's mounted you can do something like "sudo chown username:username /media/partitionname"21:31
rbrt"/media/paritionname " replaced with name of your partition21:31
rbrtsudo chown -R  ...sorry21:32

cloir_rbrt: I'm looking at 'mtab'. I would like to give permissions for that partition to ALL users not a particular one.21:37
rbrtcloir assign the users to a group then21:41
rbrtthen use the gid21:41
cloir_That sounds good, I'll try.21:42
cloir_Thanks. :)21:42

mekazuHi I'm on 12.04 with the latest updates. When I booted up this morning none of my windows contain borders or title bars, there are other problems too, Alt-Tab doesn't switch between windows anymore, Settings > Window manager and Settings > Window Manager Tweaks don't load (grey screen only), and I can't bring windows into the foreground. It makes it a bit difficult to get things done23:56
mattwj2002wow23:56
mattwj2002xubuntu has a pretty startup screen23:57
mekazuAlso, none of the windows appear in the application panel23:59
