[12:44] Found a VPS provider offering 1Gb of ram, 30gb of disk, and 1.5Tb bandwidth, for $48/year [12:44] they don't have 12.04 as an option though :( [13:11] I have to also recommend http://www.lowendbox.com/ [13:12] Lots of vps hosting people send them their current deals to post on their site... [13:17] thafreak: Wow. [13:20] also, if you use any hosting provider that uses WHMCS...i hope you don't have credit cards on file with them. [13:20] that's an amazing deal [13:21] * canthus13 doesn't use one at the moment, but wouldn't mind moving away from hosting his mail, shell, and web server at home. [13:22] ..using a 'social engineering attack'. In other words, an employee spilled info and violated banking laws. [13:22] crap, forgot my colocation host uses WHMCS...damnit [13:23] whomever whmcs uses for hosting, some one called that company pretending to be the owner of whmcs, and guessed the security questions [13:23] thafreak: what's your card number? I'll check it for you. :D [13:23] or knew them [13:24] so some how, the people who have whmcs installed (like my colo provider) may be at risk of compromise somehow [13:24] not sure if the installed whmcs versions communicate back with the mothership so to speak [13:24] probably for licensing [13:25] see...it all boils down to licensing [13:25] nah. what appears to have happened is they got ahold of the cards. [13:25] the cards for the customers who bought whmcs...yes...but they're worried there might be flaws discovered [13:25] so no. It's not licensing. What happens is the card numbers are transmitted from the vendors to the processing company (WHMCS), who then charges the cards, skims their fee, and pays out the vendors. [13:25] that could let them compromise other installs of the whmcs software [13:25] the 'hackers' got priveleged access to WHMCSs customer DB. [13:26] so everyone who uses whmcs software is actually processing payments through them? [13:26] exactly. [13:26] well, that's even worse [13:27] the software is just the merchant frontend. very few companies handle processing the cards themselves. the regulations are too much of a pain in the ass. [13:27] good thing i use paypal with most of these hosting companies [13:27] * canthus13 nods. [13:27] yeah, but I thought you still had to have your own merchant account [13:27] you do. [13:27] like most shopping cart software out there hooks to your merchant account's api [13:28] * canthus13 is a bundle of nerves this morning. He should be finding out soon if he has a new job... [13:29] it still looks like people who have whcms installed use like authorize.net or worldpay payment gateways [13:29] canthus13: which one? the veterans one? [13:29] hmmm... Odd. I thought most processing companies had their own software. [13:29] thafreak: yep. [13:31] well, the credit card i have on file is all but maxed out anyway... :( [13:33] heh. [14:16] yay spacex docked! [14:17] awesome. :) [14:18] well, they grabbed it with the docking arm [14:18] i misread the tweet. :p [14:20] haha, lulz
