Culiforgecan I get some help with nfs here or should I go to #linux-nfs?12:00
escott#ubuntu usually has a bit more traffic12:10
Culiforgeescott: righto, thanks12:28
imaubuntunoobhello guys. i have a problem login in.. the password is correct, but i can't login. login manager is always presented to me everytime i keyed in the correct password. how do i fix this?15:53
escottimaubuntunoob, if you cant get the password you can boot the recovery option and run "passwd username" to reset it. when grub comes up at boot hit shift and select the recovery option15:54
imaubuntunoobthe password is correct15:55
imaubuntunoobi can do root stuffs after key in the password  (i can login as a guest)15:56
escottimaubuntunoob, are you sure its not gnome-keyring asking for your keyring password when you login?15:57
escottalso how can guest use sudo?15:57
imaubuntunoobi don't know. i just can.15:58
imaubuntunoobi can do update without problem after login into a guest account15:58
escottimaubuntunoob, so you login as guest and type sudo echo success -- put in whose password -- and it prints "success"?!?!?!15:59
escottimaubuntunoob, ubdate-manager working might be normal as thats handled by policykitd15:59
imaubuntunoobno. i go to "software up to date" to check for update. and then i asked for my password. and i can update without problem15:59
escottalright so what error message does the login manager give you16:00
imaubuntunoobno error. i can hear a error sound. but then no error message is given.. so i don't know what's the problem16:01
imaubuntunoobafter googling for this past 2 weeks, some people said the problem is caused by lightdm or gdm, whatever it is.16:01
escottimaubuntunoob, i suspect its not an error sound. i think its verifying the password, starting the session, and then for some reason the session immediately crashes and dumps you back to a login16:03
imaubuntunoobi tried removing lightdm (or gdm, idk which one) and this problem persists. for two whole weeks. i have no choice but to use my win716:04
imaubuntunoobso how do i fix this?16:06
imaubuntunoobi know this is doable.16:06
imaubuntunoobbut the question is how. i don't have any expertise in linux/ubuntu. i always google for things that i don't know.16:07
escottimaubuntunoob, there are files in .config that control your unity settings. in particular things like ccsm settings. if those are out of whack then your gui might crash as soon as it starts. ctrl-alt-f1 login to a tty and then mv .config .config.bak16:08
imaubuntunoobwhat's tty?16:09
escottimaubuntunoob, what you see when you ctrl-alt-f116:14
escottimaubuntunoob, there might also be some directories like .compiz but i dont use unity so i dont know as well16:14

wijhi, since installing 12.04 I do not get any sound in Gnome Subtitle Editor21:30
wijI already checked if gstreamer was installed, and it was21:31
wijso any help would be appreciated since editing subtitles without sound is a bit difficult :-)21:31
geirhawij: Just read lips21:32
geirha;P21:32
wiji tried ;-)21:33
geirhaOpen the sound settings, check the output tab, try all outputs if there are more than one, and unmute them.21:34
geirhaCheck the applications tab, there should be an entry for the subtitle program there (when it's running)21:34
wiji have 3 outputs: speakers, Headphones and HDMI/displayport21:37
wijfirst two tested just fine21:37
wij3rd did not21:37
geirhawhat's connected via hdmi?21:37
wijand even with gnome subs running it does not show in the applications tab of sound settings21:37
wijvia HDMI? nothing I guess21:38
geirhaoh. the hdmi only shows up if I connect something via the hdmi port here, but nevermind, sound's working, but gnome subs apparently does not register with pulseaudio21:38
geirhaI'm installing it. I'll see if I can reproduce21:40
wijgreat!21:40
geirhaHm. What do I do to test it? ^^21:42
wijwell i was trying to sync subs for 'the wedding planner' :-)21:42
geirhaFigured it out. Clicked the new button, then Video -> open21:43
geirhaas soon as it loaded the video, gnome subtitles appeared in the sound setting applications tab, and I got sound21:44
wijsounds good ;-)21:44
wijso, something wrong with my pulseaudio installation?21:44
geirhalet's try this:  close gnome subtitles, open a terminal and run  «pkill pulseaudio», wait for pulseaduio to restart (look at the sound icon at the top panel), start gnome subtitles21:45
geirhaFor me at least, pulseaudio sometimes "chokes" and doesn't work quite; restarting it usually gets things working again.21:46
wijno change ((21:46
wijvlc media player shows up in pulseaudio app tab21:48
geirhaHm. Could it be you have some old gnome subtitle settings? they might be messing up something21:48
geirhai.e. did you keep an old homedir when you installed 12.04?21:49
wijhow can i check that21:49
geirhaSwitch to the guest user and see if it gives you sound there21:49
geirhathe guest user will have zero initial config21:50
geirhawell you didn't have to log out ...21:50
wijdjeez, i logged out (( boy oh boy, give me a sec here21:52
wiji did a complete reformat and reinstall going to 12/0421:53
wijso should be pretty clean21:53
geirhaHm. Odd.21:53
geirhaOpen a terminal and run gnome-subtitles from there. It might output some error/warning messages there21:54
wijdid that, and it's running, but no messages in the terminal21:55
geirhanot even when you load and start a video?21:56
wijaha21:57
wijcan i copy paste in this thing?21:57
geirhause a pastebin21:57
geirhahttp://paste.ubuntu.com21:57
wija what?21:57
wijah21:58
wijhow does that work actually? i need an account for that?21:59
geirhaoh, forgot about that, use http://pastebin.com instead then21:59
wijeum, i did, and now i have text in numbered lines... now what?22:01
geirhapaste the url22:01
geirhayou should have pastebin.com/<some random letters and numbers>22:02
wijright22:02
wijhttp://pastebin.com/3gpC27ia22:02
geirhaAha, it lacks a codec for ac322:03
wijcan i install that via synaptec22:03
geirhaWhy does everyone use synaptic?22:04
geirhabut yes, you can install it from synaptic too; just not sure which package it is... yet22:04
wiji have the libavcodec53 installed22:05
wijand that should support ac322:05
geirhaOpen the software center and search for «gstreamer ffmpeg»22:06
geirhaAh, found the package name,  gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg22:06
geirhaaccording to its description, it has ac3 codec22:06
wijthat's installed too, i already reinstalled i, to no avail22:07
geirhaHm. Install all the gstreamer0.10-plugins-* packages22:08
geirhathe ugly one also claims it has AC-322:08
wijis it important if i use software center or synaptic?22:09
geirhaI don't get why there has to be so absurdly many audio and video codecs22:09
geirhaNo, they can both be used to install any package22:10
wilee-nileegeirha, you are going about it in a backwards way is why22:11
geirhaI am?22:11
wijok thats done22:12
wijno lets try again22:12
wilee-nileethe codecs you need are in the retricted-extras   a vlc install has most and a couple of medibuntu for dvd's22:12
wilee-nileeunless you are trying to run something out of any regualr use22:13
wijwell, i dont know what did it, but it works now :-)22:13
geirhaYeah, that's true, ubuntu-restricted-extras would probably have installed them too.22:13
wilee-nileerestricted-extras sorry22:13
wijso I'm happy22:13
wijno more message about 'don't know how to handle ac3'22:14
wijwhats ubuntu-restricted-extras22:14
geirhagnome-subtitles should've poped up a dialog box saying what codec you were missing22:15
geirhamight be worth a bug report22:15
wilee-nileewij, a codec pack and ms fonts and flash22:15
geirhawij: ubuntu-restricted-extras installs a bunch of non-free packages that are commonly used22:15
wijaha, is that worth installing anyway?22:16
geirhaby non-free, I mean restricted license, not that it costs money22:16
wilee-nileewij, that is what you should of started with22:16
wijoops22:16
geirhayes, I always install it22:16
wilee-nileeeasy mistake though. :)22:16
wijif i install it now, does it work together with what i just installed?22:17
wijor do i need to uninstall the gstream packages first22:17
geirhayes, the package itself doesn't contain anything to note; it just depends on a bunch of packages22:17
geirhaso when you install it, all the packages it depends on will be isntalled too; the ones that aren't already installed22:18
wijok22:18
wijthanks a lot geirha ans wilee-nilee!!22:18
wilee-nileenp22:19
geirha:)22:19
wijlater! bye22:19
* geirha goes back to hacking into banks22:19
geirha(in a game)22:20
tatshi, i have a question about configuring lvm on ubuntu22:34
tatsi'm following this tutorial: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/05/10/how-to-install-ubuntu-11-04-on-an-encrypted-lvm-file-system22:34
tatswhat i don't understand is when it comes to creating the logical volumes on my encrypted partition22:34
tatsthe tutorial suggests to allocate 5G for /, 2G for swap and 10G for home... but that makes up for only 17G22:35
tatsmy HD has 80G, so what will happen with the 63G left? how can I access them?22:35
geirhaYou can create another partition with it, or just give it all to /home22:36
tatsgeirha: good, thanks!22:37
geirha5G seems a bit small for / though22:38
geirhaI'd go with at least 10G22:38
geirha5G Will suffice for installing Ubuntu, but if you install alot of packages, you'll soon fill it up22:39
tatsgeirha: thanks22:43
XXdoes anyone know how i can access files put on my network ?23:14
sandydXX: are you using windows 7 homegroups?23:16
XXwhat does it mean23:16
XX:x23:16
sandydXX: what OS are you sharing from23:16
XXwell my roomate has windows 723:17
XXive got ubuntu23:17
sandydCheck if hes sharing using homegroups. If he is, you won't be able to access any shared files on his computer.23:18
geirhawindows 7 introduced a new proprietary protocol?23:18
XXhow can i check if he is using homegorups23:18
sandydIts been here for a while23:18
sandydlemme check23:19
XXand how can i remedy this situation23:19
sandydRight click on his network conenctions thingy and go to "Open network and sharing center"23:19
sandydOn the left side, it should have a link to homegroups23:19
sandydIt should tell you whether the computer is in a homegroup or not.23:20
XXwill do23:26
XXyes it says23:27
XXHomegroup: joined23:27
sandydThen sharing wont't work.23:28
sandydHow to disable it, I have no idea.23:28
sandydI was already using Ubuntu before Windows 7 came out, so...23:28
XX:c23:28
XXyour help was very much appreciated though :D23:28
XXthanks at least i know whats wrong23:29
pointydriphello all, I am experiencing a bug in nautilus where none of the nautilus buttons work with mouse input. Keyboard input works and if I mess around enough I am able to get normal mouse input temporarily...no more than a few seconds though...for the most part I cannot use my mouse. I have gone through hardware troubleshooting definitely not the hardware. Unfortunately this is my only computer and navigating the forums is23:29
sandydXX: Wait.23:29
sandydXX: i have it.23:29
XXmkay :D23:29
XXawesome!23:29
sandydXX: first, disconenct from the homegroup.23:29
XXhis pc or mine?23:29
sandydXX: your pc is running Ubuntu. Doesn't have homegroups23:29
XXoh23:29
XXhow do i dc from homegroup23:30
XXand will this affect my windows partition sharing?23:30
sandydThat, I have no idea. I only figured out how to work it after disabling homegroups.23:30
sandydYou can reshare it.23:30
XXoh okay continue then :p23:30
sandydIf you want to share anything on windows 7 (after disabling homegroups), right click on the folder23:30
sandydSelect properties23:31
sandydGo to sharing23:31
sandydThen, go to advanced sharing, and click "share this folder"23:31
XXhow do i get it from ubuntu ? :x23:31
geirhapointydrip: So have you tried the mouse with another computer or OS?23:31
sandydClick permissions, and set the ones that you want. Their self explanatory, so i'm not going to bother23:31
sandydClick ok, save, yadayadayada.23:32
pointydripgeirha: ya it works fine...hardware is not the issue23:32
sandydRight click on My Computer23:32
geirhapointydrip: ok, so it works fine in other programs, just not nautilus?23:32
sandydSelect properties -> Advanced System settings23:32
sandydType in some kind of computer description and click change23:33
sandydType in a computer name, and change the workgroup to something more reasonable than WORKGROUP23:33
sandydclick OK, OK, and restart when it asks you to.23:33
geirhapointydrip: I'd look at ~/.xsession-errors  nautilus might be logging some error messages there23:33
sandydNow, you can access the shares from ubuntu via the network folder23:33
pointydripgeihra: no sorry i guess it's gnome as well (correct me if I'm wrong) the nav bars on top and bottom also have similar behavior23:33
geirhatop and bottom? So you're using 10.04?23:34
pointydripya23:34
XXomg  thank you sandyd23:35
XXA LOT23:35
geirhapointydrip: Is it a laptop with a touchpad?23:35
pointydripgeirha: no desktop usb mouse/keyboard23:35
sandydXX: Your Welcome. If it doesn't work, and you just want to revert, just go back to the homegroups screen:P23:35
sandydand enable it again.23:35
geirhapointydrip: Hm. Curious.23:36
geirhapointydrip: I'd try to rule out user settings first. If you switch to the guest user, or create a new user and switch to that user, does the mouse work there?23:37
XXlol will do sandyd ^_^23:39
pointydripgeirha: k i'll try...actually how to I access IRC from the terminal...it would make getting back to this room alot easier...23:40
geirhapointydrip: Install the irssi package, then in a terminal, run:   screen irssi23:42
geirhathen /connect ubuntu23:42
pointydripgeirha: k thx..brb23:42
pointydripgeirha: I have not managed to get into another profile...but I logged back in in safe mode23:56
