[14:34] canthus13: hosting service? chicagovps is the company === thafreak_ is now known as thafreak [14:34] brb [14:40] canthus13: if you want the coupon code, let me know..or just check out lowendbox.com [14:40] $48/year for 1024mb of ram vps [14:40] that's not bad [14:41] not sure if you get that price every year, or if it's just the first year or what [14:41] in fact, that [14:41] is pretty awesome [14:41] yup [14:41] I'm paying a few hundred a yea [14:41] r [14:41] regularly it's like 12 something /month they charge [14:56] anyone suggest a good windows irc program? [14:56] irssi. [14:56] for winidiots [14:56] I think it requires cygwin, though. [14:57] if it doesn't have like one button they press to magically connect them, they'll fuck it up [14:57] just be a man and telnet to 6667. :) [14:57] +1 [14:57] not for me, for the people i have to support [14:57] hmm.. [14:57] Pidgin was ok for it. [14:57] most of which are chemistry ugrads it seems [14:59] yay, go portableapps.com... [14:59] always seem to have decent windows apps listed there [15:02] Be an even bigger man and use netcat as your Telnet client ;) [15:08] you guys are funny [15:08] i'm going to have you guys explain how to use netcat to these chem ugrads who can barely use a browser [15:08] i think most ugrads only know how to use facebook [15:08] Sure. get me a job there and I'll do it. :) [15:08] hahaha [15:08] i barely have a job there [15:09] * canthus13 spends all day explaining computer operations to people with less mental acuity than an expired can of cat food. [15:09] i think this grant we're working on is the only reason i still have a job [15:09] heh. [15:09] i'm the only person left in our group besides the director (who isn't paid by our group because she [15:10] s a professor technically) [15:10] oh and a student, who gets maybe 20 hours a week [15:10] :/ [15:10] basically, i do everything... [15:10] except write grants and travel all over trying to convice people to give us money [15:11] that's the directors job...but all the actual work...that's me [15:11] oh and the student does web stuff... [15:11] like changing themes for drupal or whatever my boss decides to use this week [15:23] Heh. [15:23] It can't be any worse than being chained to a desk all day. [15:24] i'm not saying my job is worse than yours... [15:25] :) [15:25] ...that is, chained to a desk talking to morons all day. :P [17:35] Yay banking regulations. [20:22] anyone know of any other cable companies in the columbus area besides TWC and WOW? [20:25] yano: that's a canthus13 question [20:34] yano i'm in wisconsin!! [20:34] yano: you don't often find a bunch of companies overbuilding each other. It's a huge pain in the ass and really expensive to run cable, and if you've already got 2 cable companies in the area, it'd take 20 years or more to see a profit. [20:35] ah [20:35] we're overbuilt with TWC in a few small areas.. there's no money there. :/ [20:35] yea, i'm just looking for options as a consumer. a location i was checking out doesn't have WOW available [20:36] and i've had bad experience with TWC in the past [20:37] Really? Mind saying a little about what it was? [20:38] TWC has... ambiguous bandwidth caps, for one. they're different depending on the neighborhood you're in, just about. [20:40] they were advertising 1 Mbps at the time i last had their service and they were only giving me 768 kbps [20:42] * canthus13 nods. [20:42] you should get within 10% of advertised speed. :/ [20:42] we fudge it by setting the modems at 10% higher than the advertised speed. :) [20:42] so 35mbit would actually be 38.5mbit.
