ApocalyptikzWhenever I try to login (12.04), ubuntu reboots and I end up back at the login screen. Anyone can help?01:21
escottApocalyptikz, reboots? or just logs you out of the gui?01:24
ApocalyptikzLooks like it just logs out of the gui01:26
Apocalyptikzand I'm back at the login screen.01:26
ApocalyptikzI can see a few terminal lines, but it's too quick for me to read.01:27
escottApocalyptikz, thats usually indicative of a user config that is in some way bad. unity starts, trys to set the preferences as requested, crashes, and your session is closed01:28
escottApocalyptikz, you can go into01:28
escottApocalyptikz, you can go into a tty (ctrl-alt-f1) and then login and "mv .config .config.bak"01:30
escottApocalyptikz, that will backup your desktop configuration files so you should get mostly a "default" config when you login.01:31
ApocalyptikzOkay, I understand. Trying it now...01:32
ApocalyptikzI'm getting the same problem. A new, default .config file was not created.01:33

escottApocalyptikz, what kind of graphics card do you have01:35
ApocalyptikzPfft, hell if I know - some integrated chipset. I'll boot windows and have a look.01:36
ApocalyptikzHow might that be attributing to my problem(s)?01:37
escottApocalyptikz, or ctrl-alt-f1 and run "sudo lshw -C video01:37
ApocalyptikzHD 4200 (M)01:42
escottApocalyptikz, ATI?01:43
ApocalyptikzYep.01:43
escottApocalyptikz, you could look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see if there is some problem with the graphics card driver. you could also check if fglrx is installed "dpkg -i "*fglrx*"01:44
escottApocalyptikz, finally you might ask in channel if there is some other folder (other than .config) you should rename01:44
escottApocalyptikz, #ubuntu that is01:44
ApocalyptikzIt appears fglrx is not installed.01:47
Apocalyptikzescott, which log file did you tell me to take a look at?01:49

deper29hey, I'm having a problem using SSH. I don't want to use the default port 22, so if I change my sshd_config file and restart ssh, to ssh into my machine don't I just "ssh mymachine:2222" assuming I set it to use port 2222?18:10
escottdeper29, i usually use the -p argument or you can modify .ssh/config18:22
deper29so ssh -p 2222 myhost?18:26
deper29escott, taht worked. thanks a bunch :D18:28
escottdeper29, you would be a lot better off disabling password login and using auth keys than trying to hide our port18:30

steve__Ok, so I have a question. I just installed an xubuntu and kubuntu desktop environment to experiement, the only problem is that now the ubuntu splash screen is the xubuntu one. Anyone know how to change it back?23:23
Unit193!plymouth23:25
ubot2Plymouth manages the Ubuntu boot process (before the root filesystem is mounted) and also provides a graphical boot animation.  To change your Plymouth theme use « sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth && sudo update-initramfs -u »23:25
Unit193steve__: That's how you do it, though you may  also have to change the login screen.23:26
steve__Thanks you very much23:30
steve__Ill try that now23:30
steve__Ok, so that got rid of the xubuntu splash screen but now nothing shows up until the Log In screen. Its not like its a big deal, I would just like to get it working properly23:37
Unit193You should have lightdm and a greeter.23:41
