harushimowhere you have a boot, swap, root, and a home directory?00:56
pokeswapi need to run shell comands on the gnome, but it is not on the sidebar. how do i launch gnome?01:05
harushimoI have maas finally working on ubuntu-server 32 bit02:05
harushimothank you everyone02:05
SpinningWheelsI was setting up a couple vm's and noticed "The following packages have been kept back: linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server" so, i apt-get install linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server. say yes to dependencies and walk away. a day later i boot up the vm and neither can resolve hostnames anymore and the "kept back" packages are still the same.02:14
SpinningWheelsi can delete these vm's and start over, no big deal, but im curious what went wrong.02:14
patdk-lapwhat idd you do, that gave you that message?02:20
SpinningWheelsim assuming uncommenting repositories in /apt/sources.list. every time i would apt-get upgrade/update it woud say that afterwards. i got the uncomment additional repositories advice from someone who probably knows less about linux than i do.02:21
SpinningWheelsor /etc/apt/sources.list rather02:21
patdk-laphmm, failure to read the apt-get manual?02:21
patdk-lapupgrade doesn't upgrade everything, as you found out02:21
SpinningWheelsic02:22
patdk-lapit doesn't bring in new things02:22
patdk-lapthose are new, therefor it didn't upgrade them02:22
patdk-laptry using dist-upgrade02:22
SpinningWheelsi was just about to ask that02:22
SpinningWheelsok, thats finished and rebooted. i still seem to have no dns lookup from the vm02:34
SyriaHello, Please tell me how do I configure the virtual machine on my ubuntu server 10.04 to start automatically on system startup?07:34

SyriaHello, Please tell me how do I configure the virtual machine on my ubuntu server 10.04 to start automatically on system startup?07:56
andolSyria: That really depends on what virtulization setup you are using etc. If you use libvirt/kvm, which I guess can be considered the Ubuntu default, you might want to use virsh autostart08:07
Syriaandol:  /usr/bin/VBoxManage startvm "machine name" --type headless / this is how i start the machine.08:20
Syriaandol:  I have to use Virsh autostart for this?08:21
RoyKSyria: why don't you just use kvm?08:24
SyriaRoyK: Because i don't know what KVM is.. :( can it be installed on my ubuntu server 10.04 LTS?08:24
RoyKapt-get install kvm virt-manager08:25
RoyKthen just run virt-manager08:25

SyriaRoyK:  Could you please help me with the virt-manager ?09:05
RoyK!ask09:05
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience09:05
SyriaRoyK: U have installed it, But i don't even know how start the wizard.. I have two virtual machines that i want them to start automatically on system startup09:06
RoyKSyria: start virt-manager09:06
SyriaRoyK: start: Unknown job: virt-manager09:07
RoyKSyria: also, virtualbox VMs won't show up there automatically, you'll need to migrate them to kvm09:07
RoyKjust type "virt-manager" in the console09:07
SyriaRoyK: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1020975/09:08
SyriaRoyK: Also how can I migrate the machines from virtual box to kvm please..09:09
RoyKSyria: http://bit.ly/LpO01C09:10
RoyKSyria: gtk.GtkWarning: could not open display09:10
RoyKmeaning you need to use X11 forwarding09:10
SyriaRoyK: Thank you, I will work on the migration now then on the X11 forwarding09:13
RoyKssh -y somehost will turn that on09:13
RoyKif you're using a windows client, turn it on in putty and install xming09:14

meditatorhello... is it possible to run vmware player on ubuntu server ?  What I want to do is to install install vmplayer and run the vmplayer to show a XP machine .. is it possible to do that? help greatly appreciated.11:47
RoyKmeditator: I don't see why that should be a problem11:48
RoyKmeditator: also, kvm may be usable to run the vm too11:48
meditatorthanks RoyK, sorry for my ignorance.. what is kvm ?11:49
RoyK!kvm11:49
ubottukvm is the preferred virtualization approach in Ubuntu. For more information see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM11:49
meditatorthanks11:49
MatBoymhh this sucks... there are differences between partitions made on sda and sdb when setting teh same size12:27
* cwillu_at_work suggests that you didn't do what you think you did12:45
=== railsraider_ is now known as railsraider
qman__it's possible but only if you have different hardware or messed up geometry13:01
qman__if they're the same disks with correct geometry, they have the same exact block layout and can be set up identically13:01

heller_bardehi guys :)15:10
heller_bardeI have problems getting ufw to run on a ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a OpenVZ Virtual Environment. Is this the right place to come or should I rather ask in #openvz?15:15
BilgeHow can I tell what the source for a package is?15:16
BilgeI want to know if it came from Ubuntu or a PPA15:16
jdstrandheller_barde: the kernel may not support everything ufw needs. Use /usr/share/ufw/check-requirements15:23
heller_bardejdstrand: oh i see. any suggestions for a firewall solution then?15:25
heller_bardejdstrand: i already tried shorewall to no luck15:26
qman__iptables15:32
qman__unless your needs are particularly complex, a 10-20 line iptables script should do it15:33
heller_bardeqman__: oh i see :)15:36
heller_bardeqman__: thanks15:36
JanCufw & shorewall use iptables, so I'm not sure what that would solve...15:38
jdstrandsurely the kernel supports some netfilter15:39
jdstrandso he would have to just avoid the bits that his kernel doesn't support15:39
* jdstrand wanders off15:39
qman__yeah, if it doesn't have netfilter he can't firewall it15:40
qman__iptables is getting down to barebones15:40
JanCwhat kernel? (inside an openvz container)15:40
JanCmost likely heller_barde doesn't have the rights to change the firewall from inside the openvz container15:41
heller_bardeJanC: probably15:42
heller_bardeyay, with iptables it worked well :D15:47
JanCinteresting15:47
heller_bardewithsome help from this: http://www.mista.nu/iptables/15:48
JanCmight be useful to see what ufw uses that isn't supported then15:48
JanCbecause what ufw does is create a bunch of netfilter rules based on its configuration, and use iptables to apply them15:50
heller_bardeJanC: I don't know exactly how to figure that out...15:56

kalkin-hi23:40
kalkin-i'm trying to setup dnsmask as local cache23:40
kalkin-i have some own dns in /etc/hosts23:40
kalkin-i can resolv them from the machine where dnsmasq is running23:40
kalkin-i can resolve anything else from the machine where dnsmasq is running23:41
kalkin-on my other machine i can resolve only resolve my own dns (like foo.bar) which are written in the /etc/hosts on the maching running dnsmasq23:42
kalkin-but local caching doesn't work23:42
kalkin-k i think it sounds to complicated23:42
kalkin-i have a mchine dns.local which is running dnsmask23:42
kalkin-it has some entries like foo.local and bar.local in /etc/hosts23:43
kalkin-in /etc/resolv.conf are two nameservers 127.0.0.1 and another one23:43
kalkin-/etc/resolv.conf is not a symlink anymore, it's a normal file23:43
kalkin-on my dns.local machine i can resolve anything23:43
kalkin-it works fine23:43
kalkin-but on my other machine (foo.local) i only can resolve the stuff which i entered on the dns machine in /etc/hosts23:44
kalkin-i can't resolve google or anything else23:44
kalkin-why?23:44
kalkin-anyone any idea why it doesn't work?23:51
