reallyroseHi there06:58
benonsoftwareHiya reallyrose06:58
reallyroseI've just fired up my virtual ubuntu box. I'm looking at some documentation now to try and work out what, in fact, is going on. Is there anything  highly recommended for newbies to do?06:59
benonsoftwarereallyrose: http://help.ubuntu.com/community is a good place to read07:01
reallyroseI'm there, on the 'switching from windows' bit.07:01
reallyroseOki, from the link above, I typed 'lspci | grep Network' and nothing was returned. I assume this is because I am using a virtual box? Am I right?07:21
geirhatry lspci | grep -i ethernet07:27
reallyroseThat worked, geirha, thanks!07:32
reallyroseCould you explain that command please? I get the lspci | grep bit and I know what ethernet means. What does -i do?07:33
geirhawell, run just   lspci07:40
geirhaIt prints many lines. Now say you're only interested in the ones containing the word Ethernet, then grep is the tool to use. lspci | grep Ethernet07:41
geirhathe -i I used earlier means case-insensitive search, so that grep will ethernet and ETHERNET and EtherNet as valid matches07:42
geirha*grep will treat07:43
reallyroseah, case-insensitive. :) Thanks! I'll add it to my list of things I'm learning!07:43
reallyroseThank you for that!07:44
geirhawhen you see something like that, e.g. something | grep -i blah   and wonder what -i does for grep, run   man grep07:45
reallyroseCool07:56
reallyroseWoo, I made a directory. This is fun!08:10
philipballewubuntu working for you reallyrose ?08:11
reallyroseFor all of my 30 minutes experience, yes.08:16
reallyroseI'm just going to spend today working through what I would normally do in windows, see how much I can do in linux08:16
reallyroseThe 'find [keyword]' command. Does it search within the directory you are in or does it search the entire disc?09:20
geirhaif you don't specify a path, it will start at . and work its way down from there09:22
reallyroseThanks!09:23
geirhaall directories have two special directories . and ..   . is the directory itself, and .. is the parent directory09:23
geirhareallyrose: http://mywiki.wooledge.org/UsingFind09:24
geirhaThat's a really good intro to using find, though unfortunately wooledge.org is slow at times09:24
reallyroseThat's ok, I have time.09:24
reallyroseI installed something and it wouldn't open. So I figured I would see if it was actually present. But I couldn't find it.09:25
reallyroseJudging from that page, I was just using the command wrong.09:25
geirhayou installed a package?09:26
geirhaif so, you can run   dpkg -L packagename    to get a list of all files that package installed09:26
geirhashould be faster than find09:27
geirhaHere's a mirror of the link I showed earlier. Seems wooledge.org is down. http://bash.cumulonim.biz/UsingFind.html09:27
reallyroseI think I shall like this linux thing. :)09:29
geirhaAlso see the BashGuide at the same site. It's really the only good guide for learning bash09:31
geirhaIt doesn't teach you Ubuntu-specific stuff though, just stuff that will work on unix and unix-like systems in general.09:32
yeehiCan somebody help me configure a wireless connection please?15:17
holsteinyeehi: i would plug in wired, and get firmware if needed.. otherwise, let us know the hardware you have15:20
yeehiplug in wired? I am not on a wired connection, I am on mobile broadband at the moment, and want to connect to a wireless connection - i am on a laptop15:21
Alan__when installing ubuntu alongside windows a line appears dividing the available disk space. I can adjust the space but it isn't clear what space  I am allocating - the left or right of the line15:21
yeehiwhat do i type in terminal to bring up my hardware?15:21
Unit193lspci -v if it's builtin.15:22
yeehiLots of stuff to copy / paste - how do i do that?15:23
Unit193Well, you can check the one that says network, or pastebin.com15:24
yeehihttp://pastebin.com/cgCx6qjC15:26
Unit193At line 184 you have your current network interface, but the wireless one isn't on there.  Is it a PCMCIA or USB card then?15:33

yeehiWhat should you do when gnash does not render a flash web page properly? It doesn't fully load and display the flash19:35
Unit193Best thing I could do is either recommend adobe-flashplugin, or just say !gnash as I don't use that. :/19:36
yeehiOK, thank you Unit193 - i don't want to use adobe-flashplugin as it is not free software19:39
Unit193I figured you had a reason.19:39
Unit193Gnash is still beta, and I'm sure you already know their site http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/19:39
Unit193#gnash may be of more help than I would be.19:40
yeehiI didn't know it was still in beta19:41
yeehiI think they have been working on it for a long time19:41
yeehiI wonder what will happen when Google takes over flash19:41
yeehiAdobe are giving it up to google19:41
yeehioh, that is a good idea, Unit193!19:42
yeehiI will try #gnash!19:42
Unit193Some have high hopes in HTML5.19:43
mysteriousdarrendo you?19:46
yeehiI don't know about html519:47
