brendon1981hello room, wow irc takes me back00:18
brendon1981anybody know how to install ubuntustudio 12.04 without graphic install?  Trying to install on laptop.  Ubuntustudio11.10 installed fine from alternate, was wondering if a similar non-graphic install existed for 12.04.  If not, does ubuntu-studio come as a package (with jack preconfigured) that I could install over the top of a regular ubuntu 12.04 alternate install cd?  I think there are driver problems.  Oh yeah, I should00:21
brendon1981there were no drivers for lan or wireless so that made it hard.  was hoping 12.04 had fixed that for most laptops...00:22
Unit193Soemtimes drivers can be picked up from jockey, and unless there are other changes I don't know about you can just use the mini.iso and install ubuntustudio-desktop.00:23
brendon1981cool that's the package name in apt-get?  if so that'll work sweet.  thanx man00:23
len-dtbrendon1981, start with the xubuntu alt cd00:25
* brendon1981 will give that a go, "yeah, that's a good idea"00:26
len-dtbrendon1981, ubuntustudio (and I think the others too) comes with jockey00:26
brendon1981excuse my ignorance, but what is jockey?00:26
len-dtStudio is based on xubuntu these days00:26
len-dtjockey is an app for enabling and disabling non-free drivers00:27
brendon1981ahhh... brilliant.00:28
len-dtYou still have to get the drivers though...00:28
len-dtWhich wlan do you have?00:28
brendon1981broadcom 802.11.g the one that pops up in google with the first few numbers and xxxx for the rest that some driver supports, from memory. oh no wait, thats the other laptop00:29
brendon1981hang on00:30
len-dtI thought ubuntu came with just about anything.00:31
brendon1981(gotta boot up windows to get the info on the wireless)00:31
len-dtDon't worry too much, I'm not expert..00:31
brendon1981yeah so basically though i just gotta find the drivers on the net, download them, then use this jockey prog to automate the turning of it on and joining the network etc...?00:33
len-dtwireless used to be a pain, but I haven't had any problems with any of my machines for the last 3 or 4 versions anyway.00:34
len-dtSomething like that. Once you turn it on it should stay on across boots.00:34
Unit193brendon1981: No, jockey searches, downloads, and installs them.00:34
len-dtSounds even better. How do I do that?00:35
Unit193I'm a bit confused now as to who is asking about jockey. :P00:37
brendon1981nice, ok.  yeah so its an atheros AR928X and its on some acer p,o,s i bought from cashies00:37
len-dtI get the search, but it just says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system"00:37
len-dtI was thinking about a driver for my video card.00:38
len-dtThe ath9k isn't the right one for that?00:38
Unit193Ah, depends on the driver, sadly not all are actually installable by jockey, though jockey handles updates much better.00:39
Len-nbUnit193, the last time I tried to install the NV driver from their site my machine hung.00:41
Unit193Well that's not good, and I'd assume you searched for the card info as well? :P00:43
Len-nbI found their site somewhat confusing and was hoping jockey might do a better job of figuring the right driver. In the end I gave up as I don't use graphics that need the drreal driver that much the free driver is "good enough"00:45
brendon1981so,...... after a bit of research, and looks like i have to modify /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add a line saying blacklist acer_wmi00:46
brendon1981all of these things should be the complete sollution.  thanx everyone00:46
Len-nbSo it's trying to load the wrong driver?00:46
brendon1981Man, i haven't even got the install to show anything but the background picture yet, and i never used the 11.10 installed on the laptop, coz it was internetless and needed more drivers so i just kept using win, but i want to get 12.04 working....... somehow00:48
Len-nbMy acer has anar9285... which just worked with the live DVD iso in a USB stick00:48
brendon1981yeah i think even maybe it's a cd prob coz it spins down and just stops.  i plug a usb mouse in and that spins up the cd drive again for a bit, but still no action on the screen.  will try from usb.  will require a trek down to woolies....00:50
brendon1981(the failing installation process im talking about is 12.04 btw, just clarifying)00:50
Len-nbNo problem, my acer has 12.04 too00:51
Len-nb11.10 was an alt. The live iso was the big change (one of them) this past cycle.00:52
brendon1981yeah i know, i never use the flippin live cd part of an ubuntu distro.   ah well, helps convert people i suppose.00:53
brendon1981i wonder if one can make an alternate cd from a live cd distro iso?00:54
len-dtNo.00:56
len-dtThe live iso does not have packages on it. It has the packages installed.00:56
len-dtThe alt has the packages and installs them on the system00:57
len-dtxubuntu-alt and then apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop should work though.00:57
brendon1981yeah it will get past the install fail prob, then next is the wireless.  so i'll be back in a couple of hours if nothing works.....00:58
len-dtA more conservative setting than http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php?id=system_configuration suggests seems ok. This is of use only for older systems anyway. PCIe doesn't need it... and single slot pci doesn't either. Even my cheapy netbook is all PCIe internally.05:19
minimikehello there14:13
minimikeCurrently I'm installing Ubuntu 12 on a Mac Mini14:14
minimikeis there a sourceslist-entry to switch from it to Ubuntu studio14:14
holsteinminimike: you can open a package manger and search "ubuntustudio" and read about the metapackages14:40
holsteini suggest just installing what you want to use... JACK, ardour and JAmin for example14:41
minimikeat friday comes an actor to us who has to speak some text for jingles. My Boss said search something what is cheap and works :)14:44
holsteinubuntustudio is not cheap, its a professional tool that is provided free of cost, and is open source14:45
holsteinlots of time and effort goes into development14:45
minimikeI will hope it14:45
holsteini would suggest looking at audacity14:45
holsteinjust install audacity on whatever operating system you are using right now and try it14:45
minimikeour servers are running with debian perfectly. So thing Ubuntustudio would been a good choise14:46
holsteini suppose...14:46
holsteinubuntustudio would likely be overkill14:48
holsteinyou can always install debian with a GUI and install audacity14:48
holsteinthe ubuntustudio iso is a live CD now.. so you can always load that up and see what will work for you14:49
minimikeyes but the the install of debian was on an Mac Mini not successfull14:58
holsteini dont do linux on mac anymore personally14:59
minimikeUbuntu should better handle EFI14:59
holsteini dont do linux on any hardware that doesnt support what i choose to use14:59
holsteinpersonally, im around to buying from vendors such as system76...14:59
minimikethe system would be just for guest and actors15:00
minimikewithout an hassle about the licenses15:00
studio-user482hello15:03
studio-user482help please15:03
studio-user482hola15:03
studio-user482nadie?15:03
holstein!ask | studio-user48215:04
ubottustudio-user482: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience15:04
minimikehmm 512 MB memory are enough for Ubuntu studio?15:13
holsteinminimike: depends15:13
holsteini would not run ubuntustudio in VM15:14
holsteini would not expect good results in a virtualized environment15:14
holsteini would throw the most hardware at you you can.. though, what you are talking about doing is not to intensive15:14
minimikethats the reason because I've installed Ubuntu on an Mac Mini15:14
holsteinyou dont *need8 ubuntustudio though15:14
holsteinyou just need audacity on *anything* light15:15
minimikeBut I need something what could run on an Mac MINI15:15
holsteinlubuntu... xubuntu... i could make a nice project happen on 512 ram15:15
holsteingood luck!.. im out.. try #opensourcemusicians if its slow here minimike15:16
minimikemyself preferes Debian but after three houers I couldn't proper install the bootloader on the Mac based EFI Firmware15:16
holsteinminimike: also, keep in mind, all the major tools i use for audio in ubuntustudoi are available for OSX15:16
minimikethats the next :)15:17
holsteini just dont purchase apple hardware anymore15:17
minimikecurrently I have only for Linux a working AT2020 driver15:17
holsteinthats a microphone15:17
minimikethe AT2020 doesn't works on OSX15:17
holsteinthat a microphone.. it works on whatever you plug it into15:18
holsteinunless you are talking about an AT2020 USB mic..15:18
minimikeI've pluged it on my Macbook Pro15:18
minimikewithout success15:18
minimikeit's with USB15:18
minimikelast try pn Linux has worked15:19
holsteinyou'll likely need driver for it15:19
holsteinin OSX15:19
minimikenot found :(15:19
holsteinalsa probably supports it in linux15:19
minimikeso back to the studio :)15:20
holsteini'll link you an OSX driver for that device if you wait15:20
minimikethanks15:20
holsteini would go here http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/site/1635df9c8c5039f1/index.html and request one15:22
holsteinhttp://www.audio-technica.com/cms/resource_library/literature/35595fd85837a784/at2020_usb_om.pdf discusses using the hardware in OSX15:22
holsteinanyways.. i need to run.. audiotechnica supports OSX with that hardware15:23
holsteinif thats what everyone is expecting, i would go with that15:23
