deper29I just bought a new HDD and I've partitioned it on /dev/sdc and I understand how to manually mount it. How can I have it so it automatically mounts so each time? I would relocate my home folder to this drive if possible11:55
bioterror!fstab12:01
ubot2The /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions12:01
deper29bioterror, so would I just add in my drive in fstab? I'm reading something about using UUID instead?12:08
bioterror#UUID=d479195b-5ed4-4dff-be5b-45a097a8898c /media/Work ext4 defaults 0 112:09
bioterrorsomething like that, without # ;)12:09
bioterrorcommand "sudo blkid" gives you the uuid of the drive12:09
deper29oh, I see. so just use the UUID instead of /dev/sdc112:09
bioterrorUUID for the win12:10
deper29what are the defaults 0 1 for?12:10
bioterrordefaults are just options12:11
bioterrorif it should have any specific configurations, like mostly Windows XP partitions likes to have12:12
deper29what about that 0 1? I am looking on a page in help.ubuntu.com and they use 0 212:12
bioterroror credentials like SMB12:12
bioterrorThe 5th column in /etc/fstab is the dump option. Dump checks it and uses the number to decide if a filesystem should be backed up. If it's zero, dump will ignore that filesystem. If you take a look at the example fstab, you'll notice that the 5th column is zero in most cases.12:13
bioterrorThe 6th column is a fsck option. fsck looks at the number in the 6th column to determine in which order the filesystems should be checked. If it's zero, fsck won't check the filesystem.12:13
deper29so in my case, I already have something that is one for fsck, so I should do 2 for my new drive?12:14
bioterroryes12:15
deper29okay, thanks :)12:16
deper29bioterror, so now that it should automount all the time, will all users on this machine be able to access it?12:20

yeehiHello! I am interested in using a Ubuntu based distro to run a system with the following spec. The distro is Trisquel. It uses Linux-libre. Do you think it will run this hardware? What do you think of the spec?14:30
yeehihttp://pastebin.com/qAVigB2Q14:30
Sidewinder1yeehi, Looks like an impressive system. :) Nothing on your pastebin 'jumped out' at me; I think ubuntu would be superb with that system. You'll probably need to do some "tweaking' with the cam if you're intending to do skype, etc.. And, good luck with it!14:41
yeehiThank you sidewinder1! It was very kind of you to look at the hardware for me14:42
Sidewinder1yeehi, My pleasure; I just wish it was "MY", system. :-)14:42
yeehiSomebody told me that the wifi card is an atheros AR9382 http://www.anandtech.com/show/4590/bigfoots-killern-1102-wireless-networking-vs-the-world14:43
yeehihaha!14:43
yeehiWell, I haven't got it yet! But I think the solid state drive would be gorgeous! Intel is meant to be far and away the best for SSD at the moment14:43
Sidewinder1yeehi, Agreed; I stick with Intel as much as possible. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with wifi cards. Have you searched ubuntuforums.org for that exact card to see if anyone has had any problems with it?14:46
yeehiI haven't done that yet - It might work on Ubuntu, but Ubuntu uses a Linux kernel. Trisquel doesn't. It uses a Linux-libre kernel, and it won't support proprietory drivers14:47
Sidewinder1Unfortunately I know nothing about Trisquel either. Actually it's nice to see someone who is doing their research first, rather than purchasing a whole bunch of 'off the wall' hardware; then, coming here complaining that "Ubuntu sucks", very refreshing. :)14:50

raubvogelI should be able to install ubuntu in on a machine by putting its HD on another machine, installing, and then moving it back, right?18:52
stlsaintraubvogel: why would you do that?18:56
Nate___Hi I am having a problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit18:56
stlsaint!ask18:57
ubot2Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience18:57
Nate___Whenever I'm using java the computer freezes and the mouse goes to the exterme right of the left screen18:57
raubvogelstlsaint: machine in question has no usb, cd, or ethernet? It only has wireless18:57
Nate___Actually whenever I'm doing anything it can randomly freeze and the mouse goes to the exterme right of the left screen18:59
stlsaintNate___: desktop or laptop?19:00
Nate___Desktop19:00
Nate___Built it myself19:00
stlsaintraubvogel: hrm, possibly though i would suspect issues with drivers19:01
raubvogelstlsaint: I was not aware I asked to ask a question19:01
stlsaintraubvogel: was not meant for you19:01
raubvogelOh19:01
raubvogelIn any case, the drivers issue is what I am concerned about19:01
raubvogelI mean, if I get wireless running, all is well19:02
stlsaintraubvogel: wireless should not be a major issue as all drivers are handled via kernel which detect the wireless. No graphics on the other hand will need to be adjusted19:03
stlsaintraubvogel: you will need to boot into safe mode on the new computer after putting in the drive with linux19:03
raubvogelThat could be a bit of an issue since the machine in question is an ex-medical tablet. i.e. now keyb19:03
raubvogels/now/no/19:03
stlsaintraubvogel: no keyboard, no usb, no cdrom? What are you planning on using this system for??19:04
raubvogelAs a tablet19:04
raubvogelMostly to draw19:04
stlsainttouche UI??19:04
raubvogelPossible19:05
raubvogelLemme see if I find the specs on it, since it is at home19:05
stlsaintno not possible. You install ubuntu on a system it is not a tablet19:05
raubvogelOh19:05
raubvogelBummer19:06
stlsaintNate___: Can you try a different mouse?19:06
stlsaintNate___: and what version of java you using?19:06
Nate___stlsaint: I've tried it with 2 different mice, and I'm using OpenJDK 7. Also it's not my mouse, the music freezes too19:07
stlsaintraubvogel: you could mabye use something like ubuntu-core for some custom build on a device though thats a bit advanced19:07
stlsaintraubvogel: my suggestion is to ditch that system or find a way to bluetooth a keyboard to it19:07
stlsaintNate___: you take a look at logs?19:08
stlsaintNate___: and if it freezes whenever you use the system what makes you think its java related?19:08
Nate___stlsaint: Sure where would they be. I'm fairly new to linux19:09
stlsaintunder your /var/logs19:09
Nate___stlsaint: Whenever I play minecraft or do something graphics intensive it happens19:09
stlsaintthat begs to wonder even more what i stated before...what makes you think its java19:10
Nate___Minecraft is java based19:10
Nate___I corrected myself later19:10
Nate___Which log is it?19:10
stlsaintone sec19:12
stlsaintNate___: i would take a look at your syslog (possibly shows as syslog.1) and your xorg log19:13
Nate___I have syslog and syslog.1 and 3 different xorg logs19:14
stlsaintonly view the main xorg19:14
Nate___xorg.1.log?19:14
stlsaintdo you have a .0?19:15
Nate___yes19:15
stlsaintview 0 first19:15
Nate___OK what do you want me to look for or just paste it into IRC19:15
stlsaintyour looking for errors or failures19:16
stlsaintNate___: and no do not paste in here or youll get kicked for spamming19:16
Nate___Ok lol I'm looking for errors19:16
Nate___No errors but plenty of warnings19:17
stlsaintNate___: what graphics driver are you using19:19
Nate___the FGLRX AMD rivers19:19
Nate___drivers19:19
stlsaintcan you use paste.ubuntu.com to paste the output of your xorg.conf19:21
Nate___http://paste.ubuntu.com/1030918/19:22
stlsaintNate___: lol no my good person. i dont want the log. I want your /etc/X11/xorg.conf or xorg.conf.failsafe19:24
Nate___Oh sorry19:25
Nate___http://paste.ubuntu.com/1030922/19:25
stlsaintall seems fine there19:27
Nate___ok19:28
stlsaintits gonna be hard to pinpoint exactly whats going on unless you can successfuly repeat the same result with specified actions19:28
Nate___I'll try loading minecraft again19:29
stlsaintmeaning steps 1,2,3 will always result in a frozen system with mouse to left19:29
Nate___it's more in the exact middle of the whole thing because I have 2 monitors19:29
stlsaintright19:30
Nate___ok the flashing on the 2nd screen19:30
stlsaintNate___: minecraft native to linux?19:30
Nate___No it's cross platform19:30
Nate___ok it didnt happen that time19:31
stlsaintNate___: im still leaning towards graphics with the flickering of the screen19:32
stlsaintNate___: over java19:32
Nate___yeah i don't think it's java. This graphic card is pretty problematic since I bought it19:32
Nate___I've had ubuntu before and I had a very hard time setting up dual screens this time.19:34
stlsaintNate___: ive always tended to stick with nvidia19:35
Nate___it was the best $60 graphics card I could get19:36
stlsaintmeh19:36
Nate___and I had no integrated graphics and my old one burned out19:36
stlsaintNate___: 60 bucks should have snagged you a decent nvidia19:36
Nate___I'm due for an upgrade soon so I'll see if I can get one19:37
stlsaintkoo, go for it19:40
Nate___So i guess i'm not having the problem anymore19:40
stlsaintnice19:41
Nate___so I'll come back if I do19:41

Nate____I'm back it happened again. This time after I suspended my computer and logged back in, it froze.20:57
holsteinNate____: i typically just try some different kernels.. such as a live 10.04 CD, and the upcoming alpha releases... i dont usually waste too much time on suspend either... if it doesnt "just work"21:07
holsteinNate____: is this a laptop?21:07
Nate____No it is a desktop21:12
holsteinNate____: i would just reboot it then, and not bother with suspend or hibernate21:12
Nate____Ok it automatically suspended21:13
Unit193Hibernate has been known to cause problems, so it's been disabled by default in 12.04.21:13
holsteinNate____: i doubt that... maybe you have the power settings configured that way21:13
holsteinNate____: or a keyboard combonation21:13
Nate____Ok well I'll just shut it down21:14
holsteinNate____: you wouldnt want to lose power while in suspend (repeatedly)21:14
Nate____yeah21:14
Nate__Hi an update on my problem: I can successfully reproduce my problem. Whenever I log out then back in, it does the black screen, cursor freeze.21:31
stlsaintNate__: look back to your logs. under messages, system, dmesg, all the hardware info21:32
holsteinNate__: i would try booting an earlier kernel.. hit shift at boot and go under "previous versions" in the grub menu21:36
Nate__Ok I cant find anything in my logs...21:36
