luc4_macHi! I've been asked to perform a kernel bisection to inestigate a bug. I'm new to this, I would like to know if there is a lower limit to the version of kernel I can use on oneiric.09:37

bjfluc4_mac, what's the bug #? you probably should not have been asked to do that14:27
luc4_macbjf: bug #997767, why not?14:28
ubot2Launchpad bug 997767 in linux "10ec:8139 Network connection rtl8139 lost after some hours of inactivity and comes up again on user interaction" [Medium,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/99776714:28
bjfluc4_mac: because that's rather intimdating for most folks14:28
luc4_macbjf: I understand14:29
luc4_macbjf: anyway, I was about to do it, but I would like to know how far I can go. I mean, 2.6.38 shows the problem. Can I go earlier in kernel versions? That was part of 11.04 I think.14:31
luc4_macbjf: Can I also go to older kernel?14:32
bjfluc4_mac: you can go as far back as you want, what you'd like to find is the last kernel version that it worked and the first kernel version that it stopped working14:32
bjfluc4_mac: given the two tags for those two kernel version, you can start bisecting14:33
luc4_macbjf: ok, then I'll try. The doubt was related to the fact that 2.6.38 was maybe part of 11.04 or similar. I've never had problems with those Ubuntu versions.14:34
bjfluc4_mac: so you never had a problem as long as your ran Natty. as soon as you upgraded to oneiric, you started having problems?14:35
luc4_macbjf: as soon as I upgraded to 12.04. Never had problems in years with Ubuntu.14:35
bjfluc4_mac: did you run oneiric?14:35
luc4_macbjf: of course I mean on the same system with the same hardware.14:35
luc4_macbjf: yes, no problems14:36
luc4_macbjf: also 11.04, no problems14:36
luc4_macbjf: and I don't remember from where I started using Ubuntu :-)14:36
luc4_macbjf: maybe 10.04 or similar… don't really remember.14:37
luc4_macbjf: no, maybe earlier...14:38
bjfluc4_mac: that doesn't matter, the fact that oneiric worked for you is good14:38
luc4_macbjf: yes, but kernels from those versions are still installed, I tested those and the same issue can be reproduced. So it seems something related to kernel, but not entirely.14:39
bjfluc4_mac: actually, that sounds more like a user-space issue that a kernel problem14:40
luc4_macbjf: yes14:40
luc4_macbjf: or something related to both14:40
bjfluc4_mac: when you went from 11.10 to 12.04 did you upgrade or did you do a full re-install ?14:41
luc4_macbjf: never reinstalled, I always upgrade.14:41
bjfluc4_mac: if you are at a point where any kernel you try now shows the same problem, bisecting isn't going to help14:43
luc4_macbjf: I also noticed that something seems to reduce the frequency of the faults, so for instance I assumed recovery mode was fixing, instead, I just discovered after some days that recovery mode reproduced the issue as well. I'll have to update the bugreport.14:44
luc4_macbjf: also keeping the usb mouse plugged in seems to reduce the frequency of faults.14:44
bjfluc4_mac: i'd suggest comming back to this channel on monday and see if some of the other guys can help point you in a good direction. i'm at a loss right now what to suggest14:46
luc4_macbjf: I understand. Ok, thanks.14:46
lifelessanyone have advice on how to get a reply to http://www.redhat.com/archives/dm-devel/2012-June/msg00013.html?21:35
