twbofflineimap got orphaned a couple years ago08:32
twbNot sure if someone has adopted it08:32
twbThere's a new version so I guess they did :-)08:35
twbYou're right, changes look interesting.08:38
Davieytwb: yeah, the main thing is the speed.. it's MUCH more snappy to sync for some reason.  In addition, it defaults to validating TLS/SSL fingerprints08:43
Davieyalso seems to do beter 'sync back' of new folders08:43

RoyK!DHCP09:26
ubottudhcp is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol for automatic IP assignment from a router. Ubuntu uses dhclient as a DHCP client but other ones (and DHCP servers too) can be obtained from the !repos. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DHCP09:26

BuenGenioalso, any idea why tab completion works for `apt-get install` on one machine and doesn't on another, both running 12.04 ?09:36
twbGenerally we recommend people learn to use the CLI, rather than a WHCP09:36
twbBuenGenio: you need to source /etc/bash_completion09:36

twbOur code is very specific to our needs, and it's not for postfix09:38
BuenGeniowebmin (or virtualmin) has no support for MySQL afaik09:38

RoyK!webmin09:41
ubottuwebmin is no longer supported in Debian and Ubuntu. It is not compatible with the way that Ubuntu packages handle configuration files, and is likely to cause unexpected issues with your system.09:41
twbRoyK: I guess I get into the habit of assuming ubottu knows nothing about anything :-)09:42

resnoRoyK: you told about going lsi sas before, and im just curious in comparions18:48
patdk-wkyou can't18:51
patdk-wkyou can't plug sas drives into sata18:51
patdk-wksas and sata dont talk the same language18:53
RoyKpatdk-wk: erm... sata drives work perfectly on sas controllers, just not the other way around18:55
* RoyK has some 250 2TB SATA drives on SAS controllers/SAS expanders18:55
patdk-wkroyk, only if the sas controller supports sata, but ya, most do :)18:56
RoyKpatdk-wk: they do by definition18:56
patdk-wkbut then the sas controller isn't talking sas, it's talking sata18:56
RoyKpatdk-wk: SATA is a subset of SAS18:56
patdk-wkyou mean, stp is a subset of sas18:57
patdk-wksata-tunnelling-protocol18:57
RoyKmaybe... I was just told sata was a subset of sas, and I've never ever seen any sas controller not supporting sata18:57
patdk-wksas runs at double the voltage, double the cable lengths18:58

patdk-wkwhat is on the other end?19:01
resnosata drives19:01
patdk-wkwell, sata to sata will work19:01
resnoso either sas card to sata or pci sata card ( like what i linked) to sata19:01
RoyKresno: that's not a sas controller - what sas controller were you talking about?19:02
resnosas card with a sas to sata cable/dongle thing19:02
resnoRoyK: nothing specially yet, looking at lsi 3 gblikely19:02
resnospecifically19:02
resnoi couldnt find anything stating benefits of one overthe other19:03
RoyKresno: I know LSI 92xx works well with SATA both direct-connect and on supermicro's (that is, LSI's) SAS expanders19:03
RoyKjust don't use WD drives on those expanders19:03
patdk-wkthere are no real benifits of one vs the other19:03
patdk-wkcause your still using sata on both19:03
patdk-wknow if 16x drives per card is a benifit19:04
RoyKpatdk-wk: using direct attach with 80 drives will be quite a mess ;)19:04
patdk-wkI dunno he spec'd 80 drives19:05
patdk-wkconsidering he is talking about a 2 port pcie card19:05
* RoyK was just referring to his own setups19:05
resnoyea, its not anything major yet.19:05
resnoim having someissues with speed, and im setting up a new server to help.19:06
RoyKresno: for anything < 16 drives (or so), just use direct attach19:06
resnos/help/replace/19:06
RoyKfor a large setup, use something like LSI's SAS expanders, as found in supermicro machines19:06
RoyKseveral others have similar hardware19:06
resnoRoyK: with that many drives do you use like raid10?19:07
resnoor multiple raids19:07
patdk-wkthat all depends on what you need19:08
patdk-wkbut normally it's raid10, or raid6 with like 10-20 disks per set19:08
RoyKresno: one box is striped mirrors, 38 mirrors (IIRC) - this is a high-traffic fileserver, that's got a backup box with four large raidz3 VDEVs, slow on writes, but hell, it's a backup. the last two others are using 7-drive raidz2-VDEVs (backup target)19:08

RoyKresno: it works with SATA drives too19:28
RoyKbut if you're using enterprise drives, SAS drives cost about the same as enterprise SATA drives19:29
RoyKwhich cost about the double as SATA desktop drives19:29
resnouhm hmm19:29
resnoverypricey indeed19:30
RoyKyes, but you get what you're paying for. I talked to this ex-sun^Woracle employee and he said they had ran tests on thousands of SATA drives in large setups and he never wanted to touch it again. with SAS it just worked. With SATA there was all sorts of timing (and other) issues19:31

DDemonI seem to be having a problem with my ubuntu server, were the load should be 0.00 it will be 0.5 at least, sometimes spiking to 1. CPU use is 0 and mem use is 8%, there is also little I/O activety, this started today after a reboot (upon ssh login it mentioned it needed a reboot). Does anyone have any idea what this issue might be?20:57

ubottuRoyK, please see my private message21:34
IdleOne!coc > RoyK21:34
IdleOnethere are the rules21:34
RoyKIdleOne: I know the rules, but since you threaten to ban me from the channel because of swearing, I need to know which words or phrases are banned, since there is no clear distinction between a power expression and swearing in the English language, this distinction is by definition a cultural thing21:37
RoyKIdleOne: and since you obviously have a regex looking for "bad" words in here, could you please post that somewhere so that we could have the openness in the rules, as well as the ubuntu source code?21:38
RoyKIdleOne: this would be much appreciated21:38
IdleOneRoyK: You are acting like this is the first time you get warned about your use of bad language. You will not be getting anymore warnings.21:38
RoyKIdleOne: why can't you just give me (or us) that regex? is it a secret?21:38
ikoniaRoyK: please join us in #ubuntu-ops for a moment please.21:39
patdk-wkhmm, coc says nothing about use of bad words21:43
patdk-wkas long as your not using it to be disrespectful of someone or their work21:44
IdleOnethe guidelines do21:44
patdk-wkI can't locate the guide lines, via ubuntu webpage about irc support21:44
IdleOne!guidelines21:44
ubottuThe guidelines for using the Ubuntu channels can be found here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines21:44
patdk-wkmaybe that should be linked somewhere? so it can actually be located?21:47
jmarsden|workpatdk-wk: You mean somewhere like in the /topic of the channel? It is there :)21:49
Myrttipatdk-wk: it is linked in the entrymsg that chanserv sends when you join the channel21:49
Myrttialso in the topic21:49

leojrfshi, what file system do you recomend for a raid5 nas?23:26
patdk-lapleojrfs, any23:41
leojrfspatdk-lap: my problem is that it is a raid5 with 3 disk23:42
leojrfsand another 2 are coming next month23:42
patdk-lapI don't see the *problem*23:42
leojrfsso i will have to grow the partition23:42
leojrfswith xfs23:42
leojrfsi only do a md023:42
patdk-lapwhy with xfs?23:43
patdk-lapyou can grow anything23:43
leojrfsand then i add an device to array23:43
leojrfsand do xfs_grow23:43
patdk-lapxfs, ext2/3/4, ntfs, fat32, ...23:43
leojrfswith ext4, i do not know how to do the same23:43
leojrfssome say i have to use lvm23:43
patdk-lapresizefs23:43
patdk-laplvm just adds another layer on top of things, to get in the way23:43
patdk-laplvm has nothing at all to do with this23:44
leojrfsthats why i dont get why to put lvm on top of it23:44
leojrfssure23:44
patdk-lapdon't use lvm23:44
leojrfslet me explain de full situation23:44
patdk-lapif you don't want to use lvm, don't use it, that simple :)23:44
leojrfsi have 1 disk for the OS23:44
leojrfsubuntu LTS23:44
leojrfsi whant to use the other 3 disks  (+2), to make an /Data23:45
leojrfsand symlink of /home23:45
leojrfsthats it23:45
patdk-lapwell, use whatever filesystem you think would be best for your *data*23:45
uvirtbotNew bug: #1012911 in libcommons-cli-java (main) "package libcommons-cli-java (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: cannot access archive: No such file or directory" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/101291123:45
patdk-lapbe it, xfs, ext2/3/423:45
leojrfspatdk-lap: ok, i want to use ext4 then (performance =D), how simple will it be growing the partition comparing to xfs_grow?23:47
leojrfsxfs_grow just grows the partition to the max unalocated space avalable23:48
patdk-lapsame for ext423:48
patdk-lapjust as easy to shrink it also23:49
patdk-lapthough, you can grow while using the it, but you can't shrink it while using it23:49
leojrfsxfs cant shrink thats the problem23:51
leojrfsso23:52
leojrfsi just mkfs.ext4 on my /dev/md023:52
leojrfsand do my stuff23:52
leojrfsno lvm on the mux23:52
leojrfsmix23:52
patdk-lapsure23:53
patdk-lapif you wanted to *partition* it, then you would mix in lvm23:53
leojrfsthats the only case to use lvm then?23:53
patdk-lapno23:53
leojrfsi dont get why ppl always recomend lvm23:53
leojrfsxD23:53
patdk-lapif you wanted to do snapshots23:54
patdk-lapor do some other things23:54
patdk-lapI used lvm for my iscsi system23:55
patdk-lapto dynamically allocate luns of various sizes23:55
patdk-lapbut I firmly believe lvm gets in the way, more than it helps23:55
patdk-lapbut there are many places where it helps good, and many places where it's a pain23:56
