Kevin__HAlso, when I use tasksel, and try to install features such as Basic Ubuntu Server and Samba file server, I get "aptitude failed"00:04
uberdubI was told to come in here about my machine refusing to suspend to ram in 11.1 or 12.0400:42
uberdubworks in 10.0400:43
uberdubcan anyone shed some light on this issue?00:46

riz0nHi, I recently set up a new Ubuntu 12 LTS server, and copied the Dovecot config file from my old 10.04 LTS server. When I try to start Dovecot, it is not starting (it acts like it is, but it immediately terminates) ... Can someone help me get Dovecot up and running?02:23
patdk-lapriz0n, heh, that was fail02:25
patdk-lapyou should go to the dovecot website and read the dovecot 1.x to 2.x upgrade instructions02:26
riz0nsays ssl enabled, but ssl_cert not set. I don't have any ssl setting in my conf file. how can i disable that02:35
riz0ni put ssl=disable in my file02:38
riz0nwhen i did the 1.x to 2.x conversion02:38
riz0nit claims no errors02:38
riz0nstill not booting02:38
riz0nthis is crazy02:38
riz0nholy wow the dovecot conf is TOTALLY different than the old dovecot, it is split into like 20 separate files. thank goodness I found the "sample" files burried deep in ubuntu, copied them, made the couple of "minor" changes to pop3 (if i check my mail with pop3 and leave files on server, i dont want the messages marking as read for IMAP)03:03
riz0nand now i can telnet localhost imap :)03:03
skreech_How can you troubleshoot acpi issues?03:10
riz0nok so here is what i have accomplished. i got dovecot running, but i can only access it via localhost. any time i try to access it from another host, it fails (like its not wanting to bind to the network adapter)03:15
riz0nOK Now I think I have dovecot squared away. I can access IMAP. But my SMTP (I guess that's postfix) is not wanting to send out mail. Says authentication failed.03:31
riz0nI also copied the postconf folder from the old ubuntu install to the new server03:33
zulhallyn: sure we can probably try it monday03:34
riz0ni can see this just isn't going to work. i can't even send mail from gmail back in03:41
riz0nwhat is the best way to migrate from one ubuntu server to another without having to pull the last of my hair out03:43
riz0ni just plugged the ethernet back into the old linux server and all my email immediately delivered.03:44
riz0nSo for now I'm going to kill out this new ubuntu install, and try again later03:44
JJ-NeoWhat's the eaiest way to setup ubuntu server + LAMP + mencoder04:50
JJ-Neo*easiest04:50
JJ-Neosudo apt-get install lamp-server^ ?04:52
skreech_and mencoder04:55
JJ-Neois the mencoder the stable release?05:04
riz0nHi, are any of you guys awake, and can help me solve a problem with Postfix and Ubuntu 12.04LTS? When I try to authenticate it just fails. Even if I do "web mail" and it says it sends the message, it doesn't deliver.06:06

hallynjdstrand: yay, found the problem.  my tcg fallback patch needed updating.  tests now pass 100%15:22
hallynwill update later this weekend or monday15:23
hallynoh, zul said he was going to test monday, maybe i'll wait15:23
verbulhello?15:27
DDemonMy 12.04 server is currently idle, but has a load of 1.25. (It used to be 0.00 most of the time as it runs light applications.) It has 0% CPU use, no zombie process and nothing in I/O wait. It also only uses 420mb of the 4 gig of memory. Does anyone know a reason why this might be happening?15:37
uvirtbotNew bug: #1014088 in bind9 (main) "package bind9 1:9.7.3.dfsg-1ubuntu2.4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/101408815:51
RoyKDDemon: do you have any processes in Z or D state?16:07
DDemonNone in D, I don't really know what you mean by Z, how do I look that up?16:09
RoyKps axf16:09
RoyKjust look at the process status16:09
DDemonswap the letters, I ment none in Z :)16:09
RoyKso one or two in D?16:09
DDemonnone16:10
RoyKI've seen that on servers with a high uptime, load avg high, but nothing to do16:10
RoyKhigh uptime being a year or two16:10
DDemonI rebooted the server multiple times16:10
RoyKcan you pastebin ps axf output?16:10
DDemonYou can check the stats on http://dhdv.nl (Site is only used as system info site)16:11
DDemonsure16:11
DDemongive me a second please16:11
RoyKdidn't know atoms came with quadcore :)16:12
DDemondual core with hyperthreading :)16:12
RoyKah16:12
RoyKturn off hyperthreading, then, it's usually better to let the linux scheduler handle that bit16:13
DDemonhttp://pastebin.com/EpEG11GQ16:13
RoyKso... nothing, just the teamspeak server doing a bit16:14
RoyKhave you tried mumble?16:14
DDemonIt used to run just fine with an avarage of 0.00, I fear it had an update do this awhile ago, but no idea what update it did16:14
DDemonno, but even if I turn everything off it remains on a high load16:14
JanCDDemon: also checked kernel threads?16:16
DDemonno, I have not, how do you do this?16:18
JanChm, I usually use htop, where you enable/disable viewing them with "K" (capital k)16:19
JanCseems like ps shows these anyway16:20
DDemonah, I see thanks, I'll paste the results of this to pastebin also, as I am not sure how to read this16:20
RoyKDDemon: really, if the server's still responsive and works well, you can probably ignore it16:20
DDemonhttp://pastebin.com/aN1YjHkQ16:21
DDemonIt is functioning properly yes, but it kindoff bugs me it displays a wrong load, can't tell if it's doing anything now16:22
RoyKwhat is console-kit-daemon anyway?16:22
DDemonI think it uses that to fill up the empty space16:22
RoyKDDemon: as in the higgs boson? ;)16:24
JanCRoyK: I'd certainly want to know what is causing this—it could always be something hidden by a rootkit or such...  ;)16:26
RoyKJanC: just download chkrootkit or something16:29
RoyKfor a start16:29
JanCthat's not exactly very useful16:30
RoyKDDemon: ls -l /bin/ps16:30
DDemon-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 101240 Dec 12  2011 /bin/ps16:31
RoyKso probably not changed lately16:31
JanCnot when run on a (potentially) compromised system; run from a live image it might be more useful, of course16:31
RoyK(unless someone is nasty enough to hack into kernelspace to change mtime)16:31
JanCotherwise it wouldn't be a rootkit  ;)16:32
RoyKI don't think I've seen such a kit ;)16:32
JanCI have16:32
JanCon Windows & on linux16:33
DDemonPerhaps it is best that I just do a fresh install then, the server itself only runs teamspeak and apache, so easy to reinstall16:33
JanCand that was years ago16:33
RoyKthat changed a binary and kept the file date?16:33
JanCit doesn't have to change ps if the kernel doesn't show the process to userspace...16:34
RoyKDDemon: can you sha512sum /bin/ps ?16:34
DDemon4494c7e1d45b980ae2726151ce44d58f51481e281f4c946c5ed20bc2f44c3017220f7553f79a3183a82a1d2046f089e63ef752bacf1fd26e9a630a7ce272b976  /bin/ps16:34
JanCand it can easily fake the filesystem16:34
RoyKDDemon: amd64 precise?16:35
DDemonThere have been some breaking attempts on my server, but root is disabled and ssh is limited to IP16:35
DDemonyes16:35
RoyK4494c7e1d45b980ae2726151ce44d58f51481e281f4c946c5ed20bc2f44c3017220f7553f79a3183a82a1d2046f089e63ef752bacf1fd26e9a630a7ce272b976  /bin/ps16:35
JanCDDemon: I'm not saying there is something wrong, just that it is one possible explanation16:35
RoyKpossibly the same thing I've seen earlier, then16:36
RoyKhigh load and no idea why16:36
RoyKDDemon: try installing oprofile and start profiling16:36
JanCone other thing is that ps gives you sort of a snapshot16:37
JanCso if some process spikes at 100% (or more) very shortly, it might not show up in ps16:38
DDemonIs it correct that oprofile is no ubuntu package? It does not seem to be able to locate it16:39
RoyKa process spiking won't change load average16:40
RoyKhrmf - seems they have dropped it16:40
RoyKhttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+package/oprofile16:41
RoyKshould be there, but isn't16:41
skreech_uberdub: where is the bug?16:43
DDemonRoyK, JanC. Thanks for your help with this problem, I have decided that I should just do a reinstall and hopefully fix it (should take 1 hour tops) If it does not get fixed I know it's not a software problem. :)16:58
JanCcould still be software then, just one that is a bug  ;)16:58
DDemontrue, will see :)16:59
DDemonIs it smart to install ubuntu by the "guided and install LVM" when I only have 1 harddrive in the server? (ssd) Or should one just sellect "Guided use entire disk" ?17:26
RoyKjust use lvm17:26
RoyKit doesn't hurt17:26
RoyKor even better, do it manually with lvm17:27
RoyKmy standard setup is: small 1GB partition for /boot with ext2, the rest for physical partition for lvm, create swap and root there, minimal, say, 1GB swap and 10GB root17:28
RoyKand expand later on demand17:28
RoyKseparate partition for /home is usually good17:30
RoyKeasier when you have to reinstall17:30
DDemonah, I was too quick, did not see you type manual, I had already started guided :s17:32
SpaceBasshey folks17:33
DDemonI regularly download the full /home to a different computer over a gigabit network though, and the server has very little data on it, so it's quick to backup to a different ocmputer on the network :)17:33
DDemonHello SPacebass17:33
SpaceBassI have a sever that failed doing a release upgrade. Now apt and dpkg report errors processing base-files17:34
SpaceBasshttp://pastebin.com/1cY3N2c117:34
DDemonI'm sure someone smarter has a better idea, but I googled some and found someone having the same issue. He fixed it by downloading the live CD (Can use USB) and upgrade using that. (Go to install then upgrade)17:40
DDemonIt's 1 option you could try if all else fails :)17:40
SpaceBassthanks DDemon, will keep that in mind17:54
DDemonRoyK, JanC? fresh install is having the same result unfortunantly :(18:10
com7hi everyone19:03
com7i want to transfer my home-ubuntu "playground" to something, maybe called a server19:04
com7so im offered ubuntu server or debian, ubuntu i know a little, so id like to ask you19:05
com7ubuntu server is - i hope - tha same thing like the last LTS version an without the x.19:06
com7and maybe bind, sendmail, apache etc. by default installed19:06
axisyson solaris eth0:1 .. eth0:8 for 8 instances of tacacs+ server all on same subnet was doing network lot better than in ubuntu lucid 64 bit19:17
axisysdoes linux network under performs  by default? do I need some tweaking?19:17
RoyKhow did you measure this?19:20
RoyKand why would you want several ip addresses for the same nic in the first place?19:21
DDemonHey RoyK, I tried the fresh install with the latest 12.04 server, it had the same issue, I then tried a different distro so I could find out if it really was something on my system, so I installed debian to test, sellected all packages to install so I could let it work abit, and it has been sitting on 0.0 0.10 load for the past half hour, So I'm thinking it's something in ubuntu :[19:24
RoyKDDemon: there is very little difference between ubuntu and debian19:26
RoyKDDemon: how long did you let the new ubuntu install rest?19:26
DDemonI installed it and went for some tea, I'm thinking about 15 min orso19:27
DDemonBut the longer the system was on, the higher the load became19:28
DDemonI will try ubuntu 10.04 lts and 12.04 on this computer as a VM, see if there are any differences19:35
axisysRoyK: tacacs+ authentication was failing for scripts that wanted to login to about 200 juniper routers at the same time .. after switching it to linux.. we had to add delay to make the script not fail.. on solaris same script was working fine for 8 yrs.. no issue19:51
axisyss/for scripts/for this script/19:52
axisyswe have to have 8 instances of tacacs+ server running on same subnet19:52
axisyscisco talks to 192.168.0.20, juniper to .21 and so on19:52
axisysthe server has only two physical interfaces19:53
