DreamPhysixShould I install Lubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 on my production laptop for computer engineering projects?02:43
Unit193Production laptop? Do 12.04.02:45
DreamPhysixThe ISO is downloading at < 100 KB/sec :(02:45
Unit193Tried a torrent?02:45
DreamPhysixMy ISP throttles torrents02:46
DreamPhysixor i think they do02:46
Unit193Ah, that's a darn shame.02:46
DreamPhysixand my institution doesn't host for lubuntu, just ubuntu02:46
DreamPhysixhmm..02:46
Unit193What arch are you getting?02:47
DreamPhysixi was told to try lubuntu because ubuntu killed my battery life apparently because of unity02:47
DreamPhysixamd6402:47
DreamPhysixi want to test it in a VM first so i suppose x86 is fine02:48
Unit193http://176.31.100.215/iso/lubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso Try that, and you can check MD5sum.02:48
DreamPhysixthe ping to that server is 110 ms, probably not gonna be fast02:48
Unit193Bah, http://thesii.org/iso/lubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso is the correct link, and I was just getting 1MB/s +02:50
DreamPhysixmeh02:53
DreamPhysixthere is something wrong with my network but i can't complain to my ISP because I am getting 10 times the speed I'm paying for02:53
DreamPhysixbut i know that's not a discussion for this channel02:53
DreamPhysixcan you tell me though if lubuntu would be a good choice for a i5-2410m 8gb ram laptop?02:54
DreamPhysixI'm a computer engineering student and I want to spend more time in the Linux environment since I plan on doing a good bit of programming.  I have been running CentOS and Debian servers for years, headless of course02:54
Unit193It'd run on it just fine, if that's what you would like to know.  Mine isn't half that powerful.02:55
DreamPhysixI know that Lubuntu is lightweight but will it still take advantage of the power of my system?02:55
DreamPhysixLike can it still handle higher itnensive things or is it only itnended for low ends ystem?02:56
DreamPhysixlow end systems*...02:56
Unit193It's generally made for lower end stuff, but it'll take what ever you have. (Unless you're using a non-pae kernel on a 4+GB system)02:56
DreamPhysixHmm... is there something else more designed for my system?  I'm mainly concerned about battery life02:57
DreamPhysixUbuntu killed my laptop in 1.5 hours even though it lasts for 4+ on win702:57
DreamPhysixI'm really nervous about messing up my MBR or Windows stuff though, since awhile ago i installed linux as dual boot and removed it later, and my windows wouldnt boot02:58
Unit193Wow, that's bad.  I'd say it's worth a shot at least.02:58
DreamPhysixI heard Unity was a power hog02:58
Unit193It does have compositing, and that will take more.02:58
Unit193Windows 7? You should be able to boot the recovery console and fix startup from that.02:59
DreamPhysixAh ok.02:59
DreamPhysixI think I'll try to wget Lubuntu to my server and if it gets higher speed ill just download it from my server afterwardzs02:59
DreamPhysixactually it's really slow on my server which is plugged directly into a major internet hub03:00
DreamPhysixso i need to try your mirror again03:00
DreamPhysixit's also slow03:00
Unit193 7% [====>                                                                         ] 54,447,415  1.30M/s  eta 15m 8s03:02
DreamPhysixwhere are you located?03:02
DreamPhysixi go 60 KB/sec03:02
Unit193Ohio, that server is in France.03:02
DreamPhysixI'm in Atlanta.  Maybe there's a network problem at our internet exchange03:02
DreamPhysixsec03:02
Unit193That's really not cool, I've hit 20KB/s with dialup a couple times. :/03:03
DreamPhysixI'm getting 5 MB/s from a local ubuntu mirror03:04
DreamPhysixbut "We are happy to provide hosting for the following projects via the cdimage server. While they are not commercially supported by Canonical, they receive full support from their communities. The cdimage server also hosts other Ubuntu images not found on this server."03:04
DreamPhysixso its the normal cdimage.ubuntu.com mirror03:05
Unit193Well, if it works, it works.03:05
DreamPhysixdownloading it at 12.8 MB/sec from another server, lol03:09
DreamPhysixThanks for the help.  Managed to get it to go faster.03:11
Unit193Sweet.03:17
wxlhey this might be a non-lubuntu question but i just got this free eeepc 1005ha netbook and i have the same problem i had when i had xp on it-- i can't connect to [hostname].local addresses. anyone know what's up with that or anything i could do?05:13
bioterrorcan you connect to ip address?05:16
wxlyep, no problem there05:18
bioterrorwhat if you say05:18

bioterror% nslookup boge05:18
bioterrorName:   boge.sapporo05:18
bioterrorAddress: 10.0.0.305:18
wxlserver is localhost05:19
wxl(127.0.0.1)05:19
wxladdress is localhost#5305:19
wxlserver can't find hostname: "NXDOMAIN"05:19
wxlthose first two lines are the same for an external hostname05:20
wxlthen i get a reasonable non-authoritative answer05:20
bioterrorfix your network then05:20
wxlhah05:20
wxlwell05:20
wxlthis is the strange thing05:20
wxlthis is the only machine on the whole network i have problems with05:21
bioterrorit should not matter, as it gets the same configurations from the DHCP?05:21
wxlit should, right?05:21
bioterroryes it should.05:21
bioterrormy mobile phone doesnt understand hosts neither05:21
wxlthis is a totally new lubuntu install, too-- it shouldn't be some weird configuration05:21
bioterrorstupid  MeeGo05:21
wxlyeah mine doesn't either, (stupid WebOS) but i don't have high hopes there05:22
bioterrorhmmm05:22
bioterrorwhat if you use something else than WebOS, like lubuntu?-)05:22
bioterrorif they have somehow messed up things05:22
wxlwell never tried on the phone05:22
wxlbut like i said i don't care about it05:23
wxlmy other lubuntu machines work great05:23
wxlour imac has no problem at all05:23
wxlshoot, virtual machines have no problem05:23
