=== pangolin is now known as IdleOne [02:43] Should I install Lubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 on my production laptop for computer engineering projects? [02:45] Production laptop? Do 12.04. [02:45] The ISO is downloading at < 100 KB/sec :( [02:45] Tried a torrent? [02:46] My ISP throttles torrents [02:46] or i think they do [02:46] Ah, that's a darn shame. [02:46] and my institution doesn't host for lubuntu, just ubuntu [02:46] hmm.. [02:47] What arch are you getting? [02:47] i was told to try lubuntu because ubuntu killed my battery life apparently because of unity [02:47] amd64 [02:48] i want to test it in a VM first so i suppose x86 is fine [02:48] http://176.31.100.215/iso/lubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso Try that, and you can check MD5sum. [02:48] the ping to that server is 110 ms, probably not gonna be fast [02:50] Bah, http://thesii.org/iso/lubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso is the correct link, and I was just getting 1MB/s + [02:53] meh [02:53] there is something wrong with my network but i can't complain to my ISP because I am getting 10 times the speed I'm paying for [02:53] but i know that's not a discussion for this channel [02:54] can you tell me though if lubuntu would be a good choice for a i5-2410m 8gb ram laptop? [02:54] I'm a computer engineering student and I want to spend more time in the Linux environment since I plan on doing a good bit of programming. I have been running CentOS and Debian servers for years, headless of course [02:55] It'd run on it just fine, if that's what you would like to know. Mine isn't half that powerful. [02:55] I know that Lubuntu is lightweight but will it still take advantage of the power of my system? [02:56] Like can it still handle higher itnensive things or is it only itnended for low ends ystem? [02:56] low end systems*... [02:56] It's generally made for lower end stuff, but it'll take what ever you have. (Unless you're using a non-pae kernel on a 4+GB system) [02:57] Hmm... is there something else more designed for my system? I'm mainly concerned about battery life [02:57] Ubuntu killed my laptop in 1.5 hours even though it lasts for 4+ on win7 [02:58] I'm really nervous about messing up my MBR or Windows stuff though, since awhile ago i installed linux as dual boot and removed it later, and my windows wouldnt boot [02:58] Wow, that's bad. I'd say it's worth a shot at least. [02:58] I heard Unity was a power hog [02:58] It does have compositing, and that will take more. [02:59] Windows 7? You should be able to boot the recovery console and fix startup from that. [02:59] Ah ok. [02:59] I think I'll try to wget Lubuntu to my server and if it gets higher speed ill just download it from my server afterwardzs [03:00] actually it's really slow on my server which is plugged directly into a major internet hub [03:00] so i need to try your mirror again [03:00] it's also slow [03:02] 7% [====> ] 54,447,415 1.30M/s eta 15m 8s [03:02] where are you located? [03:02] i go 60 KB/sec [03:02] Ohio, that server is in France. [03:02] I'm in Atlanta. Maybe there's a network problem at our internet exchange [03:02] sec [03:03] That's really not cool, I've hit 20KB/s with dialup a couple times. :/ [03:04] I'm getting 5 MB/s from a local ubuntu mirror [03:04] but "We are happy to provide hosting for the following projects via the cdimage server. While they are not commercially supported by Canonical, they receive full support from their communities. The cdimage server also hosts other Ubuntu images not found on this server." [03:05] so its the normal cdimage.ubuntu.com mirror [03:05] Well, if it works, it works. [03:09] downloading it at 12.8 MB/sec from another server, lol [03:11] Thanks for the help. Managed to get it to go faster. [03:17] Sweet. [05:13] hey this might be a non-lubuntu question but i just got this free eeepc 1005ha netbook and i have the same problem i had when i had xp on it-- i can't connect to [hostname].local addresses. anyone know what's up with that or anything i could do? [05:16] can you connect to ip address? [05:18] yep, no problem there [05:18] what if you say [05:18] nslookup [hostname]? [05:18] % nslookup boge [05:18] Name: boge.sapporo [05:18] Address: 10.0.0.3 [05:19] server is localhost [05:19] (127.0.0.1) [05:19] address is localhost#53 [05:19] server can't find hostname: "NXDOMAIN" [05:20] those first two lines are the same for an external hostname [05:20] then i get a reasonable non-authoritative answer [05:20] fix your network then [05:20] hah [05:20] well [05:20] this is the strange thing [05:21] this is the only machine on the whole network i have problems with [05:21] it should not matter, as it gets the same configurations from the DHCP? [05:21] it should, right? [05:21] yes it should. [05:21] my mobile phone doesnt understand hosts neither [05:21] this is a totally new lubuntu install, too-- it shouldn't be some weird configuration [05:21] stupid MeeGo [05:22] yeah mine doesn't either, (stupid WebOS) but i don't have high hopes there [05:22] hmmm [05:22] what if you use something else than WebOS, like lubuntu?-) [05:22] if they have somehow messed up things [05:22] well never tried on the phone [05:23] but like i said i don't care about it [05:23] my other lubuntu machines work great [05:23] our imac has no problem at all [05:23] shoot, virtual machines have no problem === IdleOne is now known as Guest52467 === pangolin is now known as Guest94195 === Guest94195 is now known as IdleOne [10:33] hi all [10:34] I have a bit of a silly problem, how do I put a bash script to run on startup/login? [10:38] rc.local ? [11:39] most of the time new windows look like maximized, but really they just have the size of the screen [11:39] is this a known bug? [11:39] or should I report it? [18:38] *searcher [18:41] I use locate, but some may think catfish is good. [18:43] catfish is lightweight enough [18:51] Sometimes I get this error on lubuntu when trying to play sound files "snd_pcm_open failed: No such file or directory." any idea how to fix it? [18:55] How I set the default audio device in lubuntu? [18:59] General volume control is in alsamixer.
