qdbhello . can i install http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/bcmwl-kernel-source ( 5.100.82.112 ) to 10.10 ?07:47
X-tonicisnt quantal shipping with py3? there was a blog post abt it. But packages.ubuntu.com tells otherwise07:51
graingert_ufoheya09:18
graingert_ufohow does one upgrade at this early point in ubuntu+1 history?09:19
graingert_ufothe standard -d does not cut it09:19
brendandgraingert_ufo, the upgrades are being blocked because python3 porting is not done09:38
graingert_ufoic09:38
brendandgraingert_ufo, so to get quantal you must cd install09:38
graingert_ufomakes sense09:38
AlanBellhi all, I am wondering if I can install skype on quantal09:57
AlanBellI am having trouble installing ia32-libs09:58
AlanBellI had it running on precise and upgraded and skype was removed (fair enough) but I can't seem to reinstall it09:58

X-tonicwasnt 12.10 planning on a python 3 shift?10:29
nperryX-tonic, python3 is now in the repos.... The shift hasn't happened yet afaik10:30
X-tonicYes, but I read a blog about it on http://planet.ubuntu.com/ . I cant seem to locate it right now because I cannot see its archives, but it was said that with 12.10 py3 will be the default, and they were speeding up building existing packages with py310:32
qdbnperry, ubuntu 12.10 alpha110:44
brendandnperry, python3 was in the repos even in precise. python3 will be default in quantal, so everything has to work with it10:53
brendandnperry, it's happening (my team is in the middle of converting our packages), but not done yet10:54
nperrybrendand, I'm assuming it is going to be a big task11:00
brendandnperry, it's taken us 3-4 weeks11:01
brendandnperry, many teams working in parallel though...11:01
Varikonniemifunny how a change of language version takes a team of developers many weeks11:21

IdleOnealso when I try to run startx from TTY I see an error about "Unable to load module nvidia" or maybe it is unable to locate module.13:37
bjsniderIdleOne, check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log13:53
IdleOnebjsnider, I looked but I don't know what I am looking for and even if I found it would not know how to interpret it.13:53
IdleOnesuppose I should pastebin it for someone to look at. :)13:54
BluesKaj_IdleOne, i had a partial install happen to me , very similar to yours , and I ran the repair packages option in the recovery kernel in grub , and worked . Or you can run update/upgrade at the tty and restart14:04
IdleOneBluesKaj_, I am not getting any errors about packages that need fixing14:05
IdleOnein windows right now and can't seem to figure out how to access /var/ so i can pastebin the log14:06
BluesKaj_IdleOne, you won't , but they might be there14:06
IdleOneBluesKaj_, I see. I'll give it a try then.14:06
Guest89732bjsnider: paste.ubuntu.com/1054334 Xorg.0 and paste.ubuntu.com/1054337 Xorg.1 logs14:36
=== Guest89732 is now known as IdleOne
IdleOneBluesKaj_: trying to fix the packages from recovery did not help14:37
BluesKaj_IdleOne, was there any update/upgrade activity in the recovery mode?14:39
IdleOneBluesKaj_: I ran upgrade from TTY then rebooted to recovery and tried fixing packages, nothing was done.14:40
BluesKaj_IdleOne, ok , then it's not what i suspected, bummer :(14:41
IdleOnewhat is happening is that when I try to login via the GUI it brings me right back to the login manager14:41
IdleOnevery frustrating seeing how everything was running great till last night14:42
BluesKaj_IdleOne,  I had a partial nvidia install that prevented X from starting , which then had to be finished installing in the recovery kernel14:43
IdleOneBluesKaj_: when I run startx I get Failed to load module "nvidia"14:44
IdleOneI did try uninstalling nvidia-common and reinstalling but no joy14:44
genii-aroundIdleOne: Did you try like apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-current    , then update-initramfs -u    ?14:46
bjsniderIdleOne, ok, your system is installing nouveau14:46
bjsniderusing nouveau i should say14:46
bjsniderit just fails14:46
bjsniderand vesa fails too14:46
bjsniderso you should try using nvidia-current14:46
IdleOnewill give that a try. so I remove nvidia-common first?14:46
bjsnideroh, i see what's wrong14:47
IdleOneinstalling -current14:48
bjsnidernouveau can't work because your kernel command line contains nomodeset14:48
IdleOnehmm14:48
bjsnidernouveau needs kms to work14:48
IdleOnehow that get in there14:48
BluesKaj_keep nvidia-common14:50
IdleOnegenii-around: what does the -u do?14:52
BluesKaj_installing nvidia-current should disable nouveau , probly blacklist14:53
genii-aroundIdleOne: Updates the initramfs for the running kernel14:53
BluesKaj_ah genii-around good to know14:53
IdleOnesuppose I need to reboot now?14:54
bjsniderIdleOne, does your /etc/default/grub file have nomodeset in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT section?14:54
IdleOnelet me look14:54
IdleOneerr no such file14:55
bjsniderit's there, if you have grub214:56
bjsniderif not, what kind of linux install is this14:56
IdleOneI do have grub214:56
bjsniderand why am i trying to support it14:56
IdleOnebjsnider: I only run (K)Ubuntu14:56
IdleOneoh, wait. my bad14:57
BluesKaj_bbl14:57
bjsniderdid you forget the /?14:57
IdleOneI put grub before default :) and I only have quiet splash in that line14:58
bjsnideris nomodeset in that file at all?14:59
IdleOnenope14:59
IdleOnejust checked14:59
bjsniderwait, it says ro recovery nomdeset15:00
bjsniderso that's your log from a recovery boot, not a normal boot15:00
IdleOnepaste.ubuntu.com/1054379 is /etc/default/grub15:01
bjsnideryeah those 2 logs aren't much help15:01
IdleOnepaste.ubuntu.com/1054383 is new Xorg15:02
IdleOneXorg.0.log that is15:02
IdleOneNow when I try to run startx I get Failed to load module "nv"15:05
IdleOnehmm, going to reboot because I am also seeing ro recovery nomodeset when running startx15:06
idleonewow, something has changed because my font is incredibly small now15:10
idleonestill unable to login via the GUI though15:11
bjsnideryou should be axing in #ubuntu-x15:12
idleonefor support with +1 ?15:12

genii-aroundIdleOne: Did you manage to get nvidia-current installed?18:12
IdleOneyes I did and ran update-initramfs -u without any luck18:12
IdleOnestill being sent back to login manager18:13
IdleOneI'm thinking someone did done broke something good18:13
genii-aroundIdleOne: So X starts, but when it tries to load whatever the default DE is, kicks you back to login?18:14
IdleOnecorrect18:15
genii-aroundIdleOne: At login, tried yet ctrl-alt-f1, logged in and tried to see if there's some permissions issue in your home directory?18:17
IdleOneI haven't checked permissions18:17
IdleOneHow do i do that?18:17
genii-aroundIdleOne: ls -la   Will show you all the dot-files as well as the regular ones, along with who owns them. It could be some file like .ICEauthority has bad permissions or so. To get back to login screen after, alt-f718:19
IdleOnegenii-around, ok, so what am I looking for?18:20
IdleOnesometimes I feel like such a beginner18:20
=== jack is now known as Guest29320
genii-aroundIdleOne: Something like -rw-------   1 mike mike      2020 Oct 17  2011 .ICEauthority is fine if your username is mike ( mine is ) but if you see something in the list that has a different owner or group than your username ( might be root root for instance )18:21
IdleOneok. need to reboot again. I really dislike not having a GUI so I keep coming back to windows18:22
=== Guest29320 is now known as wN_
IdleOnegenii-around, what could change the permissions on .ICEauthority?18:23
IdleOneI didn't do anything...I ran an upgrade that installed kernel 3.5.018:24
genii-aroundIdleOne: Doing something like running X as root in a user's home directory for instance18:24
IdleOneI didn't do that18:25
IdleOneanyway, let me have a look at the permissions18:25
genii-aroundIdleOne: Just to ensure everything in there is owned by the user, you could issue like: sudo chown -R username: /home/username18:25
IdleOnesudo chown -R idleone: /home/idleone ?18:26
genii-aroundIdleOne: Yup18:26
IdleOnek18:26
IdleOneif my pc explodes I am driving to TO to slap you with a trout18:27
genii-aroundIdleOne: Then if you return to login with alt-f7 and it lets your desktop load, it was permissions issue of some sort18:27
genii-aroundHeh18:27
genii-aroundIt's also conceivable the default DE it wants to load is missing, or was using some resolution or setting which is now not possible for it to use, etc18:28
IdleOnehmm so I should try installing kubuntu-desktop again18:29
bjsniderdid he try to log in to the guest account?18:37
