ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/02:45
holsteinthis channel usually has decent traffic though.. a few hours wait maybe sometimes02:46
Elesawell, I can’t give many details since I'm not at my friend's side, but he tried to install Xubuntu 12.04 and so far everything is good, except that the installer just closes when progress is about 30-40%, and returns no errors or messages, it just closes02:47
holsteinid try the other installer02:47
holsteinid test the ram and hard drive and any other hardware02:48
holsteinid confirm the sum of the iso02:48
holstein!md5 | Elesa02:48

Unit193That doesn't sound good, maybe a bug unless low spec.02:48
Unit193!alternate02:48

Unit193Either way, but you can run the "Check CD" when booting if you hit shift.02:48
holsteinyup.. and test the memory there :)02:49
Elesawell, I don't think his PC is weak to run Xubuntu  but still xD, thanks, I'll tell him.. he won't like that the Alternate CD is text-based though02:50
holsteinhe might apreciate it more when it installs02:50
Elesais there any way to get any information of what's going on during the installation?02:51
holsteini know how from the alternate02:51
Elesahmm.. and if he runs ubiquity from the terminal? (is that even possible?) can he see what's going on, like when you start Synaptic from a terminal?02:55
Elesahe probably doesn't know how to use a Terminal02:56
holsteini would try a few tricks if i were in front of it.. but firing off a bunch of options to try 2nd hand is really not constructive for you or i02:57
holsteini would suggest the alternate, and try and come back with your friend if that doesnt work :)02:57
Elesaokay, I think I'll tell him (we don't live in the same country so I can't really help him)02:58
Elesaoh02:58
Elesais that Alternate CD hard to use?03:00
Elesaalso, how can he set up his Wi-Fi connection on it?03:00
holsteinits easy.. quite clear.. i would install *then* set up wifi03:00
holsteinthat could be the issue with the current live installer03:00
Elesao.o that's actually a good idea03:02
ElesaI'll tell him to try once more without Wi-Fi up03:02
Unit193But, you may want to have him lspci to see what type of card it is.03:03
Elesaif that doesn't work, then I'll tell him to download the Alternate one03:03

Elesauhm, well, everything seemed to.work well, Firefox and stuff03:03
Unit193Great, not one of the cards that needs additional fixing so it seems.03:04
Elesahe has an old ATI Radeon graphics card but I doubt that's the issue since everything else is working smoothly03:04
Elesano graphics problems or something03:04
ElesaI told him to install without Wi-Fi up and without the desktop session03:28
ElesaThe Installer encountered an unrecoverable error. a desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again03:28
Elesaunrecoverable error.. very helpful.. -_-03:29
holsteini would try the alternate Elesa03:31
Elesayup03:31
Elesahow is the Alternate CD better at supporting hardware?03:39
holsteinits not03:39
holsteinthe alternate CD has lower requirements...03:40
urgodfatherwill someone running 32 bit convert a driver for me?03:41
Elesaoh.. D:03:45
Elesabut like, why would it be better to use as a means of installation, apart from not being another alternative?03:46
holsteinElesa: i have installed with the live CD.. had issues... and used the alternate with success03:46
holsteinElesa: i have just used the alternate because there are other options in there that are not in the live installer03:46
holsteini have used the live installer and all has been fine... its really up to you03:47
holsteinthe difference is the process.. the end result should be the same, or able to be the same03:47
astraljavaurgodfather: Are you saying a driver is missing from the amd64 side? Which driver is this?03:49
ElesaI hope, thanks.. but what if that goes wrong too?03:50
ElesaI guess everything can be resolved?03:51
urgodfatherastraljava: yes, but not due to ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu etc.... more or less from the oem03:51
holsteinElesa: sure... AFAIK, the hardware has not been tested03:51
astraljavaurgodfather: Ok. What driver would you like to see? Or for which devices?03:53

urgodfatherhere is the link for the download for a synaptics touchpad v. 15.x.x. its the closest i can find to be truely l100% functional03:55
urgodfatherits for SuSe though... im simply asking someone to use alien and convert it for me03:56
astraljavaurgodfather: Alright. Well I'd appreciate if you could take the time and file a bug against linux for inclusion of that in the kernel. It'll be a slow process, and I'll look in a minute whether I can convert it for you meanwhile.04:22
urgodfatherastraljava: how to?04:22
urgodfatherastraljava: never actually filed before, and what exactly is the bug?04:23
astraljavaurgodfather: The bug would be that the current synaptic drivers don't work 100%, and then you'd specify the reasons why they don't work 100% in your opinion. You could then link to that location and explain what the drivers there fix considering that bug.04:28
astraljavaurgodfather: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs is the link that guides you in reporting bugs.04:29
urgodfatherastraljava: that bug is already open04:29
astraljavaurgodfather: Oh ok, that's good.04:30
astraljavaThen you could hit the 'Affects me too' button on it.04:30
urgodfatherastraljava:  there are several for the same issues which im not satisfied with... no need for redundancies04:34
astraljavaurgodfather: What do you mean by that? The 'Affects me too' button should just add some heat to the bug, meaning there are better chances for the bug to get resolved.04:37
astraljavaurgodfather: Have a try: http://astraljava.kapsi.fi/synaptics-touchpad_16.0.0-1_i386.deb04:37
urgodfathersorry, i tend to overlook bug reports when im looking for a solution04:37
astraljavaUnderstandable. I just to help people keep that process in mind. :)04:38
urgodfatherastraljava: installed beautifully04:57
urgodfatherthanks a million04:57
astraljavaNo probs. As a returned favor, please hit the 'Affects me too' button on a bug that matches your issues. :)04:57
urgodfatherthe question is, do i need to restart to take effect04:57
urgodfatheryou got it, for now on i will take the time to do so04:58
astraljavaurgodfather: Possibly, or at least rmmod/modprobe.05:03
