Laney#topic Ubuntu Contributing Developer Application: Vibhav Pant14:15
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Ubuntu Contributing Developer Application: Vibhav Pant
Laneyvibhav: introduce yourself quickly please14:15
vibhavsure14:15
vibhavI am Vibhav Pant, age 1414:16
vibhavI have been using Ubuntu since the age of 9, and was contributing eariler to Ubuntu by translations14:16
vibhavI was introduced to Ubuntu Development by dholbach by the fix it friday initiative14:16
vibhavAnd immediately fell in love with Ubutnu Community14:17
vibhavI am currently working on NBSes, merges , upstream changes and SRUs14:17
Laneythanks14:17
vibhavMy Application can be seen at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VibhavPant/UniverseContributorApplication14:18
Laneywho wants to go first? I suggest we use "o/" and "..".14:18
Laneyoh yes, I should have linked that.14:18
tumbleweedo/14:18
Laneygo14:18
tumbleweedvibhav: you're a fairly recent contributor, essentially applying for membership through ubuntu development14:19
vibhavtumbleweed: Yes14:19
tumbleweedhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopers describes a requirement for "significant and sustained contributions" which is normally understood as 6 months14:20
tumbleweedhave you been developing on ubuntu for that long?14:20
vibhavnope14:20
tumbleweedwere you aware of that requirement?14:20
vibhavnope14:20
ikoniaI'm sorry that is not true14:20
ikoniaother membership boards have made it clear the "sustained requirements" period minimum14:21
micahgvibhav: I told you about that in #ubuntu-motu14:21
vibhavmicahg: yeah, I forgot14:21
vibhavSo, please continue14:21
IdleOneo/14:21
tumbleweed.. for now14:22
Laneyo/14:23
Laneyvibhav: please explain https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VibhavPant/UniverseContributorApplication?action=diff&rev1=46&rev2=47 and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VibhavPant/UniverseContributorApplication?action=diff&rev1=44&rev2=4514:23
IdleOneI would just like to reiterate my comments that were also made at a precious Regional membership board meeting. I do not think vibhav is mature enough to be considered for Ubuntu membership. He lacks the necessary "team spirit" this community is built on. I strongly suggest his application be rejected until he can show more of the needed qualities. I am also concerned with the recent changes that were applied to the wiki page i.e comments14:23
IdleOnebeing removed.14:23
IdleOnes/precious/previous/14:23
vibhavLaney: restored14:24
tumbleweedIdleOne: thanks for bringing it to our attention14:24
IdleOneMy pleasure.14:24
LaneyI know that micahg put it back again.14:24
LaneyI'm concerned about why you thought trying to hide it from us was appropriate.14:24
vibhavsorry14:24
LaneyWe might have been able to have a discussion about the content of the comment, but that is now overshadowed by this, IMHO.14:26
vibhavI agree, that was really stupid of me14:26
ikoniait's not the first time you've done it14:26
tumbleweedyeah, one of the most important things I'm looking for in a prospective Ubuntu developer is trust from other developers14:26
ikoniathis whole telling lies thing is getting to be a real insult to the constant applications to the community14:27
LaneyI'm also very concerned that you have been to other membership boards and aren't following their advice.14:27
IdleOnevibhav: part of being in a community is being able to accept criticism from your peers and learning from that criticism. Trying to hide it from the DMB was not only stupid, as you put it, but for me it shows a lack of trustworthiness.14:27
vibhavIdleOne: I was never trying to hide it14:28
IdleOnevibhav: I want you to know that I am probably obe of your biggest supporters. The Ubuntu ops team has had more than a few discussions about you.14:28
IdleOnes/obe/one/14:28
Laney..14:29
tumbleweedvibhav: then why remove it?14:29
IdleOneI am always trying to point out that you do have the potential but you don't want to do the work involved. This latest incident has really disappointed me.14:29
IdleOneThanks to the DMB for letting me speak, sorry i took so much time.14:29
tumbleweedIdleOne: the "Things I can do better" paint a similar picture14:30
ikoniaI'm actually considering taking this to the CC14:30
tumbleweedthey are all part of "doing the work involved"14:30
ikoniaI don't find it acceptable that someone who is a persistant liar and trying to trick people into membership be allowed to continue14:30
vibhavtumbleweed: Yeah, but I dont remember that stuff14:30
Laneyikonia: thanks. We'll take it from here...14:30
ikoniasure14:30
Laneyanyone else? micahg?14:31
micahgI think what I wanted to say has been said already14:31
Laneyok, let's vote.14:31

jdstrand[TOPIC] Weekly stand-up report18:01
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Weekly stand-up report
jdstrandI'll go first18:02
jdstrandI'm working on getting oo.o and libreoffice out today18:02
jdstrandI've also got the apparmor 2.8 upload for quantal, but am trying to work out the python3 packaging as libapparmor isn't importable in python3 due to it going to the wrong place18:03
jdstrandthe ufw python3 port should be done, I'd like to get it packaged for quantal18:03
jdstrandI plan to continue working on my assigned updates after that18:04
jdstrandmdeslaur: is off today. he is on triage and I believe has some updates pending18:04
sbeattiejdstrand: do we expect python-libapparmor to only support python3 from a packaging standpoint?18:04
jdstrandjjohansen is also off. I'm not sure what he has planned18:04
sbeattie(hopefully sleep)18:05
jdstrandsbeattie: that was my starting point, since there are no reverse depends. in thinking about it over the weekend though, I think we may want to also export python218:05
sbeattiewould we need a separate package for that?18:05
jdstrandour python tools should be bi-lingual, so it should just be a matter of putting things in the right place18:06
sbeattieokay18:06
jdstrandsbeattie: based on my understanding of the Debian/Ubuntu python packaging guidelines, yes18:06
jdstrandI am going to get some advice on that though18:06
keesit should be possible to just build the python bindings twice18:07
jdstrandthat is what I was hoping18:07
jdstrandthe recent commits make it so that PYTHON* env variables dtrt18:08
jdstrandso I just need to work out how to package that bit18:08
keesyeah. is there a dh_python3, or does dh_python2 handle both?18:08
jdstranddh_python3 isn't being super helpful atm-- it is putting things in site-packages instead of dist-packages so python3 script can't find it18:09
jdstrandkees: both-- I think dh_python2 can be passed --with-python3 and then maybe it will work. I'm kinda in the middle of it, so not sure18:09
keescool18:09
micahghrm, I thought site-packages was deprecated since python 2.6?18:09
jdstrandmicahg: exactly18:09
micahgwell, that sounds like a bug that should be easily fixed, has anyone talked to doko_ about it?18:10
jdstrandanyhoo-- we don't need to bikeshed this-- I'm on it and will work it out. if I need help, I'll holler18:10
tumbleweedjdstrand: site-packages vs dist-packages means you aren't calling setup.py correctly18:10
jdstrandtumbleweed: heh, thanks. I read something on that and thought that might be the case18:11
tumbleweedyou want --install-layout=deb18:11
jdstrandbut haven't had a chance to try it18:11
jdstrandtumbleweed: noted. this may go faster than I thought. thanks! :)18:11
jdstrandsbeattie: you're up18:11
sbeattieI'm in the happy place this week18:12
sbeattieI'm testing the openjdk-6/icedtea-web backport/update; hoping to have that out by the end of this week.18:12
sbeattieI've also got an embargoed issue on my plate18:13
sbeattieI need to catch up on the open apparmor patches for review.18:13
sbeattieand that's pretty much it for me; I'll be off the 4th for the US national holiday.18:13
sbeattiemicahg: you're up18:14
micahgI'll be helping sbeattie test the icedtea backport as it fixes a regression for me, and then working on webkit18:14
micahgI think that's it18:14
tyhicksI'm in the community role this week18:15
tyhicksI'm wrapping up some Mozilla testing as we speak and then my focus will shift to the pidgin update18:15
tyhicksI didn't get much time to work on it last week since I was catching up on the Mozilla pretesting schedule and working through some issues I ran into while doing that18:16
jdstrandtyhicks: did you sort out those issues?18:16
tyhicksI've got a short week. Half a day off tomorrow, the holiday, and then a full day off on Thursday.18:16
tyhicksjdstrand: Yep - it was a problem with our thunderbird config dir tar that we pull out of QRT. I can fill you in after the meeting.18:17
tyhicks(the rest was 'fixed' by filing bugs against ff/tbird)18:17
tyhicksI still haven't gotten to my merges, so any free time will be spent on those.18:17
tyhicksThat's it for me18:18
tyhicksjdstrand: You're up since jj is away today18:18
jdstrand[TOPIC] Highlighted packages18:18
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Highlighted packages
jdstrandThe Ubuntu Security team will highlight some community-supported packages that might be good candidates for updating and or triaging. If you would like to help Ubuntu and not sure where to start, this is a great way to do so.18:18
jdstrandSee https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdateProcedures for details and if you have any questions, feel free to ask in #ubuntu-security. To find out other ways of helping out, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/GettingInvolved.18:19

jdstrand[TOPIC] Miscellaneous and Questions18:19
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Miscellaneous and Questions
jdstrandThere are a lot of merge opportunities for packages listed in http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/d2u/. Performing these updates is a great way to help Ubuntu and bolster your developer application.18:20
jdstrandDoes anyone have any other questions or items to discuss?18:20
keesI've got the xorg update for precise tested, can someone publish it?18:20
keesit's been sitting since UDS :P18:20
jdstrandkees: remind me-- is that >= 1.10 or > 1.1018:22
tyhicksThat probably falls on my shoulders since I'm on community this week, but I doubt I'll be able to get to it with my short work week18:22
keesjdstrand: ?18:23
jdstrandkees: what version of X is affected?18:23
keesjdstrand: ah! introduced in 1.10 (LP: #996250)18:24
jdstrandkees: ok, so that means that natty and oneiric are also affected18:26
keesyeah, I didn't attempt those backports.18:26
jdstrandsure18:26
jdstrandwe have currently prioritized this as 'low' due to our hardening measures18:27
jdstrandwhich is why no one has done anything yet18:27
jdstrandof course, the patch is sitting there, so someone could try to get that going18:27
jdstrandkees: do you feel 'low' is not appropriate for Ubuntu?18:28
keeswell...18:30
keesit's a DoS due to upstart killing the respawn.18:30
keesand since on restart it aborts during video init, the console is unusable after the 1st restart18:30
keesso, it's kind of borderline. anyone can ruin your unsaved-work day by sticking in the evil hid thingy18:31
jdstrandyeah18:31
keesit's also very unlikely. :P18:31
jdstrandyes-- requires physical access18:31
sbeattie... unless you're in the vicinity of kees18:31
kees:P18:31
sbeattie"workaround: avoid kees"18:32
jdstrandI can much less creatively ruin your work if I have physical access18:32
jdstrandanyhoo, it sounds like tyhicks will be looking at it18:32
keescool, thanks18:32
jdstrandhopefully a backport will be straightforward and easy to test18:33
jdstrandanything else to discuss?18:33
keesI *think* the backport of my patch for 1.11 shouldn't be much worse for 1.10. I already hauled in all the new functions for 1.1118:33
jdstrandsbeattie, micahg, tyhicks, kees: thanks!18:41
