KM0201how do i get pulsaudio to start automatically i boot my server?  i've installed pulse audio, if i log into the server locally, type startx, then pavucontrol, make any adjustment i want ( just folume or whatever) hit escape, hit startx, audio is fine... but i don't have audio "automatically" (the server is hooked to my TV)03:28
RoyKKM0201: dunno - does pulseaudio run under X? if so, it's not really an ubuntu-server thing04:53
KM0201RoyK: the weird thing is, when i start X, and i get the terminal window, if i type "pavucontrol".. audio works fine when i start xbmc04:54
KM0201dunno, can't figure this one out.04:54
KM0201not really a big deal though04:54

acidflashhello all07:55
acidflashI am seeing a phenomenon using ubuntu-server07:56
acidflashI have ubuntu-server installed on a http squid proxy07:56
acidflashoutside of my proxy, my latency is 160 ms, but INSIDE of my proxy, even if I am alone, there is no one else on the proxy other then myself07:57
acidflashmy delay will increase to 305-325ms07:57
acidflashis this linux related, or is it squid related?07:58
Jeeves_I think it's infrastructure-related07:58
acidflashaha... so neither ?08:00
acidflashprobably due to loss and other stuff on my network?08:00
Jeeves_I'd say so, yes.08:00
acidflashare there any rules or guidelines which i can apply to test this scenario: ie: natting = XXX ms loss, etc.08:01
Jeeves_natting should not introduce latency nor packetloss08:02

SC-RMHi, I'm trying to set up a maas controlled server farm, and I have followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure but all my nodes have "instance-state: unknown" any help on to make it go into running state. I have successfully deploy openstack on top of it, and it's running, but this lack of correct message here bugs me, because, what is wrong?09:25
SC-RMOr some log where I could look into to see, what is the cause of it09:28

Pupeno_WHello. In my own computer I have Host *, ForwardAgent yes. I do ssh pupeno@b1 (b1 is a local virtual machine I'm using to test some stuff). If I do ssh pupeno@b1 inside b1, shouldn't I log in straight away due to the ssh forward? or am I missing something?14:05

KristianDKPupeno_W, maybe the config file is somehow not loaded? Otherwise, try setting this for the specific host. If you have other settings for this host, I'm not sure how the override works - try putting it together in one section, e.g. Host b1\n    ForwardAgent yes14:10

asbyHi, I have an issue with ubuntu-server 12.04 (minimal install, fully updated) where I can only reboot a server using a power cycle. With a shutdown -r now (or -h and power on) the server just hangs just after init-bottom.15:33
asbyWhat are the differences between booting with a shutdown -r now and a power cycle?15:33
asbySince the server hangs before starting the syslog daemon I can't find anything what will cause this problem.15:34
asbyIs there any documentation what explains the complete boot sequence of ubuntu-server? So I can find where it goes wrong?15:39

SaerI was doing a backup of my server via rsync/ssh when it locked up, after reboot I'm left with the error: Init: Failed to spawn friendly-recovery post-stop process: unable to execute: permission denied  (This occurs even in recovery mode) I've tried several things to troubleshoot and searched a bit with no luck, anyone have a suggestion on where to go from here?22:33
escottSaer, can you boot init=/bin/bash?22:33
Saerfrom the installation cd I can boot22:34
escottSaer, if you have physical access I would chroot in22:34
Saerok I'll give that a shot22:35
=== Aaton_off is now known as Aaton
Saerhrm it says "chroot can't execute '/bin/sh' permission denied22:38
Saerbut it seems to have mounted the array on /target and I can see all of the files there22:39
escottSaer, what are the permissions on /bin/sh?22:45
Saerlet me check22:45
Saerroot/root22:46
escottSaer, but is it marked executable?22:49
Saeryes22:50
Saerinfact I can type sh and it runs or I can type chroot and it runs, but if I do chroot /target it errors22:51
=== jetole_ is now known as jetole
escottso why would chroot say permission denied when trying to execute it22:51
escottwhat is the exact line you are running when you try and execute sh22:52
Saerjust /bin/sh22:52
escottyou mean /target/bin/sh?22:52
Saerno just the /bin/sh I'm in the recovery shell (busybox)22:53
escottwhen you try to chroot to /target it will exec /target/bin/sh not busybox sh. so you need to be looking at /target/bin/sh (that which becomes /bin/sh after chroot)22:53
Saerpermissions on /target/bin/sh are some numbers22:55
Saerread/write/execute all set on though22:55
Saerowner is 100222:56
escottthats clearly wrong.22:56
escottSaer, maybe you did something that ran a root chown on the /22:56
escottSaer, ls -l /target/bin/sh should say lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 May 28 18:04 /bin/sh -> dash22:57
Saeryep that's wrong, it says  lrwxrwxrwx 1 1002 10513 root 4 Jul 3 xx:xx:xx /bin/sh -> dash22:58
Saerprobably screwed up something with rsync, not sure, but what do you suggest for repairing the permissions22:59
escottyou could maybe chown it back to root:root, but thats not going to correct for every executable. i would suggest reinstalling23:00
Saerwell I did chown root:root /target/bin/sh and it's still showing the same permissions from before23:02
Saerno error message, looks like the chown completed without an issue23:02
Saeralso looking at my other files, it's ONLY /bin and the vmlinuz file that have the permissions wrong23:03
SaerI dont mind reinstalling as you suggest, just wondering why chroot isnt working23:05
Saerchmod rather23:06
escotti dont know what to make of that. lrwxrwxrwx 1 ok up to here. 1002 >>user 1002 owns /bin/sh???<< 10513 >>unlikely you would even have a group with that number<< root >> this should be the timestamp now, WTF is this<< Jul 3 >>ok<< xx:xx:xx >>are you suppressing the hh:mm:ss??<< /bin/sh->dash ok23:06
SaerI will type it exactly, one sec23:07
Saerno copy and paste :p23:07
escottSaer, if its just you typoing a few things its not a big deal, im just wondering why there was something after the gid before the timestamp23:08
Saeroh it was just lost in manual copy/paste im sure, the formatting looks normal, permissions are as you say, followed by the userid, gid, timestamp and then sh->dash23:09
Saerok also the user and group23:09
Saerthose are user/groups from the other machine I was doing the rsync backup to, rather trying to setup it up23:09
escottok.23:09
Saerno idea why they changed the user/group on this machine, but obiously I'm an rsync noob and will read more on it before messing my filesystem up more lol23:10
escottSaer, well (on my machine) root owns everything in /bin so chown root:root /bin/* should be ok-ish. id still be worried the only way rsync should touch the permissions is if it replaces the file in which case you have to ask where did this binary come from?23:11
escottSaer, you generally want the -a flag when doing rsyncs to preserve permissions23:11
escott-aAX might even be better23:12
escottanyways you did "chown root:root /target/bin" and it completed silently, but the permissions were unchanged?23:13
Saeryeah I dont think I used a I just used -ve23:13
SaerI did it and yes, the permissions didnt change :(23:14
Saeralso tried chrown root:root /target/bin/*23:16
escottwhat does echo $? say immediately after the chown?23:16
Saernothign at all23:16
escottreally confused23:17
Saerme too 0.o23:17
escotthow is /target mounted? read-write? can you touch /target/test23:17
Saerit was mounted by the ubuntuu install disk, so I'm not sure, how do I check?23:18
escottjust type "mount"23:19
Saerrw, relatime, user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered23:20
escottwhat about touch /target/test.txt; and touch /target/bin/test.txt23:24
Saerboth of those didnt return anything23:24
escottbut do they create the files /target/test.txt and /target/bin/test.txt23:27
Saeryes the files are there23:27
Saerthis is so weird -_-23:28
escottSaer, so things to check "touch /target/bin/sh; ls /target/bin/sh" and verify the modified time changes. "chown root:root /target/bin/*; ls /target/bin/sh" and see if it becomes root owned23:30
Saerok so touch /target/bin/sh did not update the file time23:32
lifelessits probably a symlink :)23:33
lifelesswhat does 'stat /target/bin/sh' show ?23:33
Saerit's a link to /target/bin/dash owned by an unknown uid and gid23:33
Saerthe last access does appear to have been updated from the touch command in stat23:34
lifelessif you chroot /target /bin/sh, then stat /bin/sh, does it show a uid and gid ?23:35
Saerwhen I try to chroot /target I get permission denied23:35
Saercan't execute /bin/sh23:36
Saerok also /target/bin everything is owned by root:root now23:37
Saerexcept for the symlinks23:37
Saerthey are all still owned by the unknown uid23:37
lifelessit would be "chroot /target /bin/sh" or perhaps "chroot /target /target/bin/sh"23:40
Saeryep it worked, but now all my commands like chroot/chmod/ls are access denied lol, rebooting to switch ownership of those and I think i'll have some progress23:41
lifelessas for the link itself - "The permissions of a symbolic link are irrelevant; the ownership is ignored when following the link, but is checked when removal or renaming of the link is requested and the link is in a directory with the sticky bit (S_ISVTX)23:41
lifeless       set.23:41
lifeless"23:41
lifelessgood luck23:41
Saeryes I did a chown on dash and sh started working23:41
Saerwas able to mount23:41
Saerthank you both for you assistance23:41
