govatenthello 01:33
roaksoaxgovatent: when is the ubuntu hour02:03
govatentthe 28th starts at 302:03
govatentI just added it to the loco team page as well as google plus and there is already a facebook event which i am now pushing to friends 02:04
roaksoaxgovatent: cool02:06
roaksoaxremind me02:06
roaksoaxlol02:06
govatentok ill be sure to keep you posted 02:07
govatentadd it to your google cal now that it has a google event 02:07
govatentI would really love for you to be there too 02:08
roaksoaxyeah i'll be back to mia that weekend02:09
govatentSweet 02:10
govatentdid you get jellybean yet? 02:10
roaksoaxgovatent: nah... still waiting for the upgrade02:13
govatentlol I think i just read today it started hitting devices 02:13
roaksoaxreally?02:26
roaksoaxhopefully02:26
roaksoaxgovatent: i'll be getting the tablet02:26
govatentnice if apple does not try and block sells on that too :P02:26
govatentroaksoax, http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/10/android-4-1-jelly-bean-now-available-galaxy-nexus-google/02:29
roaksoaxgovatent: yep,my system is up to date02:35
roaksoaxgovatent: but not with jelly bean :(02:39
govatent:(02:39
govatentI just started running CM 9 ICS 4.0.4 on my sensation. I'm liking it. much better than stock rom 02:39
ShawnRso i'm looking for a new job, any tips on finding a linux/unix type job for entry level (well, at least "no enterprise experience)?03:14
govatentive got nothing. but i guess i want to hear the same info03:15
ShawnRlol03:16
ShawnRi mean, i'd even take a windows/network admin type job... problem is, i have 8 yrs experience of in-home/residential and some commercial experience... but no "enterprise" experience03:17
govatentI would love to be a linux admin and quit my windows life I live now03:17
ShawnRlol03:17
ShawnRi'm hoping that windows 8 might be the "start" of something... moreso with MSFT making their own "surface" tablet... it seems they wanna tell OEMs to kiss their ass, they're going the way of apple03:18
ShawnRif that's the case, then more OEMs might dabble more with linux, making it more mainstream (enough for better driver support from mfgs)03:18
govatentI deal with only windows stuff at the moment and just end user linux things as on my personal time i will not use non open source stuff. The largest network I deal with used to be an AD of 200 people but now is 30. After things started tanking around 2009 03:18
ShawnRthat's my 5-10 yr outlook03:18
ShawnRthat sounds unfun03:18
govatentI don't know if MS is gonna wanna kill off OEM's. Cause people hate them as it is. Their software will still suck. So if they lose the ability to push it on to every machine on the planet they might lose a lot of sells 03:19
govatentUnless MS hardware is in a fair price range then yea i guess that would kill oem's and still allow their crummy product to compete with apple 03:20
ShawnRwell, the reason why apple doesn't "break" so much... is b/c it is a limited hardware base03:20
ShawnRnone of this  100 diff motherboards/NICs/etc03:21
ShawnRso much less issues with driver conflicts (and also OS optimizations are better)03:21
govatentyea. but you could also blame hardware manufacturers for really crummy drivers 03:21
govatentI think apple might do some of the driver development in house 03:21
ShawnRi bet they do03:21
govatentbetter than relying on any of the companies they work with. Intel, AMD , Nvidia and anyone else 03:22
ShawnRbut you think about it, all macbooks have the same mobo03:22
govatentCause the same apple computers run like crap with a linux kernel on em 03:22
ShawnRthe only thing that changes is amt of RAM, HDD space or processor speed (but still in the same family)03:22
govatentyup 03:22
govatentI just sold my macbook pro for a system76 :) 03:22
govatenti get it on Thursday 03:23
ShawnRapple has it going, if you want "hassel free with the only caveat that THEY tell you how to use it" then it is great03:23
ShawnRooh, nice03:23
govatentgetting the mac back in Jan was such a stupid idea 03:23
ShawnRi agree03:23
ShawnRi got an ASUS, kinda not enjoying it as much as i would of liked03:23
ShawnRfor a windows laptop, GREAT03:23
ShawnRbut the webcam and mousepad are off-the-norm and have driver issues with linux03:23
govatentI ordered the 76 last sat but they had a 8 day order to ship time so it shipped yesterday finally 03:24
govatentI was looking at regular computers as well cause 76 does not offer real gpus. just intels ive bridge based HD 4000 03:24
govatentbut i don't do enough gaming to care. the 4000 is fine with me cause it will have full linux support from 7603:24
ShawnRthat's the other thing... my nvidia cuda is doing jack diddly squat for me right now in linux :(03:25
ShawnRyup03:25
govatentdo you have optimus? 03:25
ShawnRyes :/03:25
govatentlulz03:25
govatent:P03:25
govatentsorry im a jerk face 03:25
govatentjk 03:25
ShawnRlol, s'ok03:26
ShawnRi have to lulz at myself as well03:26
govatentI ran a live ubuntu disk on a few optimus systems at tigerdirect and it seems to work fine. but i guess that was using the intel card or something 03:26
ShawnRyeah03:26
ShawnRit just uses the intel card03:26
ShawnRi tried getting it to just use the nvidia all the time03:26
ShawnRbut even not doing optimus, just having it on ALL the time is not really feasable03:26
ShawnRsome ppl say they got it to work like that, but it has a lot to do with adding a virtual screen and having it pipe stuff back and forth03:27
govatentthe reason i got rid of the mac was I could not use the dual gpu. I hated only using the AMD card.  GDDR5 6570 card. killed battery. only was to use intel was efi booting which then does not support dual gpu setup 03:27
govatentalthough in osx with the dual gpu driver setup battery was like 7 hours 03:27
govatenti could use the intel card fire up youtube and without knowing it run flash on the amd card 03:28
govatentother than that ubuntu ran alright on that computer 03:28
govatentthe trackpad also slightly sucked 03:28
govatentwhen did you get your laptop? 03:29
govatentand how much was it? 03:29
ShawnRum... around $800 i think, maybe last feb or march??? i can't even remmeber03:29
ShawnRASUS N53SV03:30
govatentnot a bad laptop 03:30
govatentI'm sure nvidia won't be jerks to us much longer 03:30
govatentI like how they tried to save face after Linus called them out on it03:30
govatentthat made me mad 03:31
govatentI just got this but added 8 GB of ram to it. cause i am an idiot. https://www.system76.com/laptops/model/gazp703:31
ShawnRlol, looks fairly similar (case design) to my ASUS03:32
ShawnRnot totally, but similar03:32
govatentasus tends to have nice designs 03:32
ShawnRi kinda really want that slim ASUS they have in the stores03:32
ShawnRi love the ASUS designs, i'm glad they got in the OEM business03:32
govatenti think system76 buys their laptops from some chinese company 03:32
ShawnRjust wish they'd be more lionux friendly03:32
ShawnRwell, you've got a 95% chance of being right just by guessing that they buy from china :P03:33
govatenti don't blame asus so much as I do hardware makers 03:33
govatentlol03:33
ShawnRtrue03:34
ShawnRis it THAT hard to provide good drivers03:34
govatentalthough asus might have the power to make sure linux gets supported 03:34
ShawnRi'm all about open source and FLOSS stuffs... but i would be OK With proprietary gfx drivers if they made them work well03:34
govatenttrue03:35
ShawnRwell, i'm hoping that with steam coming to linux soon...03:35
ShawnRthat might be more of a reality for gfx drivers with both nv and ati03:35
govatenti've heard good things about the intel hd 4000 linux support . should be interesting 03:36
govatentI hope it will run Amnesia. They say it does 03:37
govatenti was gone from our irc channel for so long 03:39
govatentI really gotta fix up my arm server so i can set that back up03:39
ShawnRi was always in here... but not "really" in here03:40
ShawnRarm server? as in arm processor? what'cha running?03:40
govatentyup. its a very old thing. 03:40
govatentI run Debian on it03:40
govatentIts a linksys nslu2 box with a 300 mhz arm cpu. flashed to run linux 03:40
govatentill link you now 03:40
govatentgot it for free from one of my bosses ages ago cause he does not know about linux and had no use for the box with the standard feature set 03:41
govatenthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU203:41
govatentI think the last supported ubuntu version was like 9.10 or something fairly old and not lts so no longer supported 03:42
ShawnRah, i read of those things03:42
ShawnRi have one of those pogo plug things (got it free from work), haven't even felt like tinkering with it yet03:43
ShawnRdon't have time nor room for another device... haha03:43
govatentoh man you gotta start playing with it. very useful low power devices 03:43
govatentMy desktop is just does not get turned on. 125 watt cpu 6 core clocked at 4 ghz. Amd 1090t black edition. i only turn it on when i wanna use it 03:44
govatenti will say the nslu2 is just slower than a snail 03:44
govatentbut with time always got the job done for me03:44
ShawnRwell, i have this server on a sempron with WD green drives... lol03:44
ShawnRit is just my workhorse "generic" server03:45
ShawnRssh/irc/samba/nfs/www/ftp/"cloud" services03:45
ShawnRi also used to use it as a DVR for a wifi webcam (security) and web portal as well03:46
govatentnice03:46
ShawnRi run subsonic for all my music, which is just really nice for me, and then i used this app on my phone ip cam viewer03:47
ShawnRand i could see my webcam from anywhere... i wanna buy a webcam taht supports pan/tilt/zoom though03:47
ShawnResp omne that has 2 way audio would be nice, as the app supports it03:47
ShawnRbut they aren't cheap :/03:48
govatentyea i used ip cam viewer like mad for a lot of dvr setups i do for people 03:48
govatentsubsonic allow you to sync music? 03:48
ShawnRyeah, it was the first app i actually paid for after i used it so much03:48
ShawnRwell, sync is an interesting word03:48
govatenti own an ipod :P 03:48
govatentold school one though 03:49
ShawnRso subsonic app for android lets you choose how much to cache up03:49
ShawnRmine is set at like 5 or 10 gb03:49
ShawnRand you can tell it to pre-cache up to n songs ahead on the playlist03:49
ShawnRso you load a playlist and it'll start DLing however much at once03:49
ShawnRso you have online and offline play without having to think about it03:49
govatentnot bad03:50
ShawnRnot at all03:50
ShawnRit also does streaming video03:50
ShawnRbuilt in + custom transcoding03:50
govatentoh that's another app i use. I bought a copy of Twonky for streaming stuff 03:50
govatentthat came to my head when you said transcoding 03:51
ShawnRyeah03:51
govatenti run the arm version of it 03:51
govatenti know there is mediatomb for free. but twonky is very nice for me anyways 03:51
ShawnRi used mediatomb to stream to the PS3 for a while03:55
ShawnRit has some issues though... wasn't so grand on updating libraries when you add content, etc03:55
ShawnRwelp, i'm headed to bed, g'nite govatent nice seeing you again04:02
govatentyup. i will to in just a bit04:02
govatentgood night catch ya later04:02

Detox_at_WorkI think the server cd is barebones and has no gui or many other things19:37
