MakMamHi00:31
MakMamJust installed Kubuntu 12.10 today, love it so far00:31
hellslingerhi guys, are there any rekonq users in here who use lightspark and know of a set of directions for making that work02:31
=== vorian is now known as v
Daskreechhellslinger: what's lightspark?02:59
hellslingerreplacement for flash03:00
hellslingerflash 11.2 crashes rekonq and firefox sometimes03:00
Daskreechhmm not heard of it03:07
Daskreechhellslinger: did you install the PPA Or some other means?03:10
hellslingerI'm not really sure what I'm doing... I installed the browser plugin via apt, but I don't see it as an  option in the application/MIME configuration dropdowns for shockwave flash03:13
hellslingerthat is in firefox03:13

L3top:)03:16
hellslingerL3top, ubottu, how do I tell firefox or rekonq to use lightspark?03:17
L3tophellslinger: You don't. It simply exists in its place... probably through simlink. Chances are if you are using KDE that the problem exists between your GPU/driver/flash03:18
L3tophellslinger: please give me the output of lspci -nn | grep VGA03:20
* Daskreech hugs L3top and heas off to munch on cake and cream03:20

hellslingerso L3top, I've installed browser-plugin-lightspark, yet when I'm on youtube and right click the player, it still says Adobe Flash player etc.03:23
L3topthat is likely because you did not remove/purge flash03:23
hellslingerI was afraid you would say that :)03:23
hellslingeroh well no big deal03:23

rafaelHello!03:27
rafaelHi!!!03:28
hellslingerhowdy03:28
genii-aroundHi rafael ... do you have some question about your Kubuntu?03:29
* L3top is in the US... is just insane.03:29
hellslingerso I even dpkg-reconfigure'd the lightspark plugin package to see if that would make it work after purging flash.. no such luck. Next stop: lightspark ppa03:30
L3tophellslinger: I do not believe the ppa will fix your issue03:30
L3topI would purge the lightspark, then reinstall... then hit youtube.03:30
L3topif it is telling you that it is flash...03:31
L3topit may be indentifying itself as such03:31
hellslingerI should have been more clear, so it purged flash correctly, no trace of it after restarting firefox03:31
hellslingerbut no sign of lightspark03:31

hellslingerbrowser-plugin-lightspark should be what I'm looking for riught?03:33
L3topI am not really sure hellslinger. I barely use desktop, and I dont tube.03:33
L3topJust trying to help.03:33
hellslingerthe help is much appreciated, thanks03:34
hellslingerbarely use desktop?03:34
L3topI live in a different x environment03:34

L3topI have access to kde but rarely see it03:35
L3toplinuxmce03:35
hellslingeri3?03:35
hellslingerhaha03:35
hellslingerdo you not go to youtube out of principle or never have a reason to?03:36
L3topI guess... I just don't care in general... and if it is of any relevance... we use adobe due to hulu anyway... so I have access to it... without conflict.03:38
hellslingerahh, just curious03:39
L3topOur environment does not harbor anything which causes problems with hulu, unlike most DEs... unity/compiz especially.03:39
L3tops/hulu/flash/03:40
hellslingerno compositing?03:42
L3topHeaps of it.03:42
hellslingerI said composite, not compost     j/k03:43
L3topThis is a bit off topic for kubuntu support though.03:43
L3topcompositing is not an issue which interferes with flash on its lonesome... it is the implementation. Yes, I have alpha overlays on top of hulu without issue. But please... continue to denegrade the project I develop for while I try and troubleshoot your issue... :P03:46
hellslingersorry if I offended you, what project do you develop for?03:47
L3topI wasn't offended... I was being lighthearted. LinuxMCE.03:48
L3topI misunderstood your compost joke.03:48
L3topif you have to ask03:48
L3toplol03:48
hellslingerhaha oh you said heaps when I asked about compositing, which I didn't understand so I cracked wise03:48
* L3top took it to mean my favorite project was poo.03:49
hellslingermaybe it was just a programming joke...03:49
hellslingerso linuxMCE does compositing differently03:49
L3topI would say we do it as directly as possible... and DEs have a lot more to deal with than we do. We are not a desktop. We are a home automation appliance with a media center.03:50
L3topagain though... this is off topic.03:51
L3topI am not here to promote... was just explaining why I don't deal with these issues.03:51
L3topI troubleshoot here and in #ubuntu to learn and better our project... but I don't try to recruit.03:52
hellslingeris anyone really going to get upset that you're telling me about your dev project because I asked? if so I'll shut up03:52
hellslingerI'm genuinely interested though03:52

oneadvent_phoneCan someone let me know when gimp will be updated?15:04
ikoniaoneadvent_phone: it won't15:05
oneadvent_phoneEver? I'm just looking for single window mode15:06
oneadvent_phoneThere is a python hack but I figure eventually it'll be there. Why never update?15:08
ikoniabecause packages don't get version bumps until a future ubuntu release.15:09
oneadvent_phone...well that is what I'm asking, will a gimp bump happen next round? Kubuntu doesn't have to follow exactly Ubuntu anymore either15:11
ikoniaoneadvent_phone: yes it does15:11
ikoniaoneadvent_phone: it's built off the same base15:12
ikoniasame repos15:12
oneadvent_phoneI think I'm in 2.6 and 2.8 us with single window mode15:12
oneadvent_phoneIs not us15:12
oneadvent_phoneAnd I see...15:12
oneadvent_phoneIs there a milestone log that would show it for 12.10?15:13
ikoniaI don't think it's targeted for 12.10 (I don't know for certain though)15:15
oneadvent_phoneYea ok, I might just do their repo...I hear it is a bit unstable though15:16
oneadvent_phoneThanks ikonia15:16
ikoniaI wouldn't do that15:16
ikoniathe dependencies will conflict with your base components15:16
ikoniabut that's up to you to decide15:16
oneadvent_phoneHmmm...figured their repo would would include dependencies15:17
OerHeksikonia, oneadvent_phone , see this packagelist, 2.8 will be in QQ 12.04 >> https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/gimp/2.8.0-2ubuntu115:17

OerHeksehhh 12.10*15:18
oneadvent_phoneOh ok that makes sense15:19

oneadvent_phoneLol I was trying to figure what you meant :P15:19
oneadvent_phoneso I'll just wait then. Nothing pressing15:19
oneadvent_phoneThanks15:19
OerHeksyw15:19
ikoniaI wouldn't be %100 sure that will make it in15:20
oneadvent_phoneWell if not there will be a good reason maybe15:21
OerHeksTrue, still a lot of issues to solve.15:21

Joitdjbadboy:  probatly your front plug is crap?17:07
Joiti got that once, that the connectors there did not work all17:07
djbadboyokay and what can i do for that problem ?17:08
Joitopen your case frm your computer and fix it for yourself :P17:08
Joitwhen you connect your headset at the backside it works?17:08
djbadboyat backside from computer works sound17:09
djbadboyonly at front will the speakers dont work17:09
Joitdid you plug it into the green box?17:09
djbadboyyes  have the green plug at the green box17:11
Joiti know that you can turn it seperate on or off, windows had such a button17:11
djbadboythe green front box works at win717:11
Joitprobatly you should look at sytemsettings then, if you can turn it on  or align it to speaker out17:12
djbadboyich habe meine systemeinstellungen überprüft aber hinten am pc wird mir im system als kopfhörer nur ausgegeben, wenn ich standert mäßig einschalte dann kommt nix weder headset noch über die boxen17:14

BarkingFishEvening all. Can someone please remind me how to file a bug against something which hasn't physically crashed, but which needs checking for a problem please?  I know there's a tool to do it with, but I can't recall how to use it.17:19
Joitprobatly you can find more at systemsettings -multimedia- phonon17:20
BarkingFishI've discovered a bug in Plasma or one of its components - when you have the Delete option enabled in the right click menu, and you select it to take out a file, a little box pops up asking you to confirm.17:20
Joiti can find there more at 'einrichtung der audio Hardware'17:20
BarkingFishUnderneath it is a checkbox which states "Do not ask again" - you check it, and go through with the procedure - but every time you delete something else, even in the same dolphin session, it still asks you to confirm, regardless of whether you've told it not to.17:21
BarkingFishit even does it outside of dolphin, if you delete stuff off of your desktop17:22
Joitfeel free to fill a bug at bugs.kde.org :)17:22
Joithttp://bugs.kde.org17:23
szals/fill/file/17:23
BarkingFishYes, that's what I want to do. But I want to collect the system information and bug data first :)17:23
BarkingFishI know I can do it with apport, but I can't remember how to do it for a specific program17:23
=== ronnoc_ is now known as ronnoc
Joiti think you can describe it with the delete method, only copy some files over what you can delete17:24
Joitor simple write the never ask again checkbox dont work17:25
BarkingFishJoit - I don't know how long you've been on KDE or Kubuntu, so I won't be patronising - but it's always best to collect as much data as possible to attach to a bug report, it helps the developers to figure out what the heck is wrong :)17:26
Joitbut i still have 2 bugs open there, and dont see a lot going on with it17:26
BarkingFish<  11 years on linux, 10 of those on KDE :)17:26
JoitBarkingFish:  sure, but when you cant replicate it, or only have a vage clue, you have to use what you can remeber. btw how long does the bug exist? Allready since 10 years? :P17:27
Joitvague even17:28
Joiti can remeber having a similar issue17:28
Joitbut not sure if that was at debian once17:28
BarkingFishi can replicate it - every single time, and the bug has existed (as far as I can tell) only on 4.8.2 thru 4.8.417:28
DaskreechBarkingFish: What data are you going to collect?17:32
BarkingFishVersion, system information, and any data I can manage concerning whichever program it is which is being silly :)17:33
BarkingFishyou used to be able to grab stuff with ubuntu-bug, but this isn't an ubuntu bug, it's a kde issue17:33
BarkingFishif the program or command had physically crashed, i'd have included whatever kcrash generated - Backtrace, etc17:34
BarkingFishbut it hasn't - all that's happening is that KDE is ignoring or not storing a specific custom setting17:34
DaskreechWell when you file a bug manually it will ask you all of that17:34
djbadboyJoit: cant find that problem .....17:35
BarkingFishok Daskreech - i don't usually file manually, i normally submit the automatic reports from kcrash/drkonqui17:35
BarkingFishso this is going to be fun. I don't even know where on the bugtracker to file it - there are so many categories, i can't even figure where to start. Is it a menu issue, a UI issue, a plasma issue, or what? :P17:36
DaskreechBarkingFish: well to file a bug via drkonqui you need an account right?17:37
Daskreech So login with your account17:37
BarkingFishyep, have done.17:37
Daskreechok17:37
BarkingFishI click "File a bug" and get a whopping great list from which I have to pick one to file it under...17:38
DaskreechRIght :)17:38
DaskreechWhere are you seeing the bug?17:39
BarkingFishin KDE's "right click" menu - I have the Delete command enabled. You click and it asks you to confirm deletion - and under it is a checkbox you can mark which says "Do not ask again" - the problem is, even with that set - it asks you every single time, even in the same session, regardless of where you use it (dolphin, direct from the desktop, etc)17:40
DaskreechOk so it's either dolphin or kdelibs you want to fiel against17:42
Daskreechfile17:42
BarkingFishi'd go with kdelibs then, it's happening even outside dolphin17:42
DaskreechYou can choose one or jump into either #dolphin or #kde-devel to query further before filing the bug17:42
DaskreechIf you think it's  kdelibs lets go to #kde-devel shall we?17:43
BarkingFishyeah, that would be good.17:43
BarkingFishI'll /part #kde and head there17:43
DaskreechAs an aside if you are really confused about where it should go #kde-bugs is a good channel to hang out in. #kde-quality might work as well17:45
qbitI do not see this behavior here, e.g. when I delete it just deletes - no question asked17:45
Roeyhello17:46
Daskreechqbit: after checking do not ask again?17:46
Daskreechhi Roey17:46
Roeywhy do I see apt-get wanting to install i386 packages like libusb-0.1-4:i386 on my 64-bit arch?17:46
Roeyhey Daskreech!17:46
qbitin general tab of dolphin settings  I have all 3 "Ask for confirmation" empty17:46
qbitDaskreech: I never get the box or the question in the first place because I already had it turned off as described17:47
DaskreechRoey: You are installing a 386 package I would assume17:47
BarkingFishqbit, which version of KDE?17:48
qbitBarkingFish:  KDE 4.7.417:48
BarkingFishyeah - I'm on 4.8.417:48
qbitopps - I meant 4.8.4 - can't seem to quite hit the '7' key17:48
Daskreech:-)17:48
BarkingFishI've been seeing this since ±4.8.217:48
BarkingFishDo you mind a screenshot of what I get?17:49
RoeyDaskreech:  yeah but I don't know why17:49
DaskreechBarkingFish: Alright. can You check to see if the relevant confirmation buttons are unchecked after you make that selection ?17:50
RoeyDaskreech:  I was just doing apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade..17:50
qbitstil it shouldn't ignore the 'don't ask again' checkbox - it should be recording that as a preference, and probably in the same xxxxrc file that the Dolphin General settings is stored17:50
BarkingFishJust filing a quick screenshot of what I get :) With you in a sec17:51
Daskreechqbit: Yes but if it's not unchecking it is a different problem than if it is unchecking it and it's still not working17:51

BarkingFishphoenix_firebrd, long story cut short, kde is ignoring my request from the checkbox to "not ask again" when I delet something.17:58
BarkingFishi know. i'm supposed to be able to - that's the bug. I can't.17:58

phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: and try the deleting something again and see if it works18:03
BarkingFishNope. It didn't.18:03
BarkingFishI deleted a photo, and ticked the Do not ask again, deleted it - went to delete another photo, and it promptly asked me again18:04

BarkingFishno sudo or anything?18:05
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: ya no sudo18:05
qbitI bet the setting is stored somewhere else18:05
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: after that check with dolphin18:06
BarkingFishrunning, and done.18:06
BarkingFishstill didn't work18:06
BarkingFishnext? :)18:06
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: check18:07
BarkingFishi just did18:07
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: not working?18:07
BarkingFishDeleted a photo, marked do not ask, deleted it - lather, rinse, repeat, etc. You know the drill :)18:07
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: is this a live session?18:08
BarkingFishqbit, they should be under a part marked [Notification settings]18:08
BarkingFishphoenix_firebrd, no, it's running from a fully installed setup18:08
qbitBarkingFish: no 'Notification settings' at all anywhere present in my dolphinrc18:09
BarkingFish0.018:09
qbitBarkingFish: my guess is these are leftovers from really old KDE earlier versions that have been updated over time with cruft left in18:11
BarkingFishSorry, qbit - it should be [Notification Messages] - apologies :)18:12
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: have you tried purging and reinstalling dolphin?18:12
BarkingFishi'll pastebin up the current config, as it's set now, see if you can spot any cockups in it.18:12
BarkingFishAnd yes, phoenix_firebrd - twice18:12
qbitBarkingFish: doesn't matter - a search in kate with just 'Notification' returns nothing - not found18:13
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: is your home directory is at a separate partition ?18:14
BarkingFishphoenix_firebrd, yes18:14
BarkingFishBoot & Root on /dev/sda1, swap on /dev/sda5 and /home on /dev/sda618:14
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: sda6 is ext4?18:15
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: what is your kde version18:16
BarkingFishi have no idea what it is. Hold on a mo and I'll find out18:16
BarkingFishphoenix_firebrd, 4.8.418:16
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: "sudo fdisk -l" will five you the details18:16
BarkingFishand dolphinrc for you - http://pastebin.com/KzxDQ8E818:17
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: for me?18:17
BarkingFishyep - that's after the backup of the file, and the restart, and the marking the checkboxes, and so on18:18
BarkingFishthat's the regenerated version18:18
BarkingFishand according to sudo fdisk -l ,  sda6 is  "Extended"18:19
BarkingFishi'll check it with the partition manager18:19
qbitthese confirmations are now stored in file kiorc -> ConfirmDelete=false and ConfirmTrash=false under a section titlesd: [Confirmations]18:20
BarkingFishapparently, it is ext418:20
BarkingFishWell that's gonna be fun then. I don't have a file named kiorc in the config area, unless it's somewhere else :)18:21
qbitBarkingFish: lol - og grok18:22
BarkingFishoopsie - yes I do. It is right down the bottom of the window :P18:22
BarkingFishsize is 35 bytes, and it's absolutely and totally empty18:23
BarkingFishi just opened it in kate, and it's blank.18:23
BarkingFishbrb18:23
phoenix_firebrdqbit: i think thats the pROBLEM FOR BarkingFish18:25
phoenix_firebrdqbit: IT SHOULDN'T BE EMPTY18:25
phoenix_firebrdoops18:25
qbitwhat I'm thinking is I have these entries because I turned off these things when I originally configured Dolphin, and the check box that is supposed to remember these entries is putting them in the wrong place18:25
phoenix_firebrdqbit: but he should be having the same entries18:26
qbitthey don't belong in dolphinrc any longer but rather kiorc and checking that check box is not doing this18:26
BarkingFishtell you what - how about I try this... Copying the contents of dolphinrc into kiorc, saving it, and seeing what happens?18:26
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: no no18:26
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: delete kiorc and try the process again18:27
BarkingFishok, i'll have another shot.18:27
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: this time rinse properly18:27
BarkingFishdo you want me to rebuild the ksyscoca thingy too?18:27
BarkingFishor just try deleting another file?18:27
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: if this does not work then18:27
BarkingFishok18:28
BarkingFishMy God, Holmes. It's bally well worked :P18:29
BarkingFishI just deleted a photo, confirmed not to ask anymore, deleted another one and it didn't ask :)18:29
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: nice18:29
BarkingFishAND... it's regenerated kiorc with readable contents this time :)18:29
phoenix_firebrdqbit: thats a good info, ty18:30
BarkingFish[Confirmations]18:30
BarkingFishConfirmDelete=false18:30
qbitthis old cruft thingy in kde rc files is an old long standing problem18:30
BarkingFishso now.. .what do I do with dolphinrc? Is that redundant then? or can i just take out those bits which actually don't work?18:30
BarkingFishqbit, the biggest issue is that KDE simply overwrites old stuff with new stuff - when it should be changing the old stuff so that it works.18:31
BarkingFishleaving all these artefacts behind frankly, is bloody annoying :P18:31
qbitfor comparison purposes: http://pastebin.com/kU6pys5W18:32
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: the actual problem might have been file permissions for the kiorc file18:32
BarkingFishi don't see how it could have been, I never changed them, and it had the same perms as everything else in that folder18:33
BarkingFishall the config files in that folder have the perms set as 600, owner = thor18:34
phoenix_firebrdBarkingFish: then it might have been something else18:35
BarkingFishwell, whatever it was, it's working now.  So no need to file a bug on it - unless that would be helpful in case others experience the issue?18:36
BarkingFishin fact, I might just do that anyway, and note that it could be an artefact from previous versions18:37

BarkingFishWell i'd like to say thank you guys for the help in getting that issue fixed - I didn't realise checking through the scrollback, but that took well over an hour to sort out.  If you don't mind, I'm gonna take a breather, drop out and get some dinner since my blood sugar's on it's way down :)18:47
BarkingFishI'm gonna mark as away, but I'll still be about - so I'll see you in about 30 minutes18:48

freeman__sure is busy here :)21:07
BarkingFishhi freeman__ :)21:08
freeman__hello :)21:08
BarkingFishIt never is that busy in here. Only when people actually pop by in need of help, and then only if someone is about to assist them :)21:08
freeman__oh, then this is some kind of serious channel? well, i just poped to say hello21:09
freeman__:)21:09
freeman__actualy, i have a question for an audience here. has anyone tried kde 4.9 rc2?21:10
freeman__none of u?21:16
BarkingFishI don't think so, not unless they're using one of our pre-release testing repositories21:19
BarkingFishAll the current normal users will be on 4.8.4 afair21:19
freeman__4.8.4 has been a setback for me so crossed my fingers and went to 4.9rc221:20
BarkingFishwhat was wrong with 4.8.4?21:23
freeman__kwin would hang no matter what driver i would use21:24
BarkingFishThat doesn't sound good by any means. kwin is good here and I'm on 4.8.421:27
freeman__well, it was strange for me to. never had a problem with my propriety nVidia driver and kwin until 4.8.421:29
BarkingFishAh. One second then and let me go check if any bugs are filed against this21:29
freeman__ok :)21:29
BarkingFishok - there have been no bugs reported against kwin hanging (in conjunction with an nVidia driver) since 2010 - so you may be wise to make an account at https:.//bugs.kde.org and file a bug to make people aware of the issue.21:31
BarkingFishthe last bug filed was https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257850 in November 201021:32
ubottuKDE bug 257850 in scene-opengl "KWin hangs from time to time, no keyboard input possible, GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY" [Wishlist,Unconfirmed]21:32
BarkingFishthe affected user there was also running an nVidia driver21:33
freeman__will it have any affect to report a bug for 4.8.4 if development has been forwarded for 4.9 and i have no issues with it (with 4.9)?21:34
BarkingFishfreeman__, it may be wise - i have no idea how long it will be before 4.9 goes live to the network, so there may be users with 4.8.4 who have problems with it, and need a bugfix21:35
freeman__ok, will do then, cause the bug was really strenuous21:37
BarkingFishcool. Thanks for doing that.  If nobody knows that the bug exists, then it could potentially carry forward to another version :)21:38
freeman__well, i thought it was a more general problem cause i run pretty clean system, no exotic settings. 4.9 feels snappier then ever, one could feel that real work has been put in to it...21:45
elvenfighterHello everone. About that post "Switching to KDE telepathy in 12.10". I've faced very annoying bug of ktp-contactlist: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292719 . Can anybody confirm/investigate this?21:46
ubottuKDE bug 292719 in text-ui "Conversation messed up" [Normal,Unconfirmed]21:46
dumnut_hi, i have 2 ubuntu 12.04 computers. iwant to access the other's files. i went to wireless icon on top left and edited it, but still no connection. what more must i do?21:57
BarkingFishdumnut_, if you're on ubuntu 12.04, this would be the wrong channel to ask in :)  Try #ubuntu - this channel is for the KDE version, the other is for the Gnome / Unity version21:59
dumnut_hi BarkingFish, thank-you for direct22:00
dumnut_will do22:00
BarkingFishno problem, you're welcome :)22:00
javier_hola a todos22:10
javier_alguien me puede decir como hago en kubuntu para ver los videos en vista preeliminar cuando abro una carpeta'22:12
freeman__has anyone reported a bug in task manager, when it fails to refresh (suppose that's the problem) when one of the windows is closed? it leaves the gap and doesn't realign the rest of  the windows...22:12
nstiurcahey guys, I can't seem to log in to my account on fully upgraded kubuntu 12.04. As soon as I hit enter after typing my password, a black window (I think an instance of Konsole) briefly flashes, then the whole screen goes black for a few seconds and I find myself back at the login screen. My only hint so far as to what is wrong is the .xsession-errors file (http://pastebin.com/L7M5t4p6). KDE install seems ok since I can log in as an22:14

BarkingFishnstiurca, it sounds to me like x is failing to start.22:15
BarkingFishCan you manually start an x session?22:15
freeman__login,  then type startx22:16
BarkingFishfreeman__, yep. That's the idea :)22:16
freeman__:)22:16
BarkingFishnstiurca, press CTRL+ALT+F1, login with your username and password, and simply type startx  to check if you can manually start an x session.22:17
BarkingFishThe alternative is to go into the terminal and after login, type service kdm start  and see if launching a fresh kde session will help22:18
nstiurcaI got a black screen with a window telling me "failed to start session gnome" :-S22:18
nstiurcabtw i already have one KDE session running. as I said, I can log in as another user22:19
nstiurcaservice kdm start -> start: Job is already running: kdm22:19
nstiurcait might say something different if i were to log out of my alternate user account, but then i'd have to figure out how to connect to IRC from terminal...22:20
BarkingFishSo if you have Kubuntu - how come it's trying to start a gnome session?22:21
BarkingFishor do you have both desktops installed?22:21
nstiurcanot sure... i used to have gnome installed, but i uninstalled that ages ago22:21
nstiurcai guess some config file is still out of whack22:21
BarkingFishyeah, definitely22:22
freeman__have you upgraded kubuntu trough apt? is /home still pointing to your home directory?22:22
nstiurcawhat's very strange is that everything was working fine until a few days ago when my house lost power during the night, and upon restart of my computer i couldn't log in anymore22:22
nstiurcayes to both22:23
freeman__nstiurca, sudo apt-get check22:27
nstiurcaReading package lists... Done Building dependency tree        Reading state information... Done22:28
freeman__sudo apt-get -f22:28
freeman__sorry22:29
freeman__meant: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade22:30
freeman__any new packages?22:30
nstiurcayeah, looks like a kernel security patch (3.2.0-24 -> 3.2.0.26)22:31
freeman__worth a try22:32
nstiurcai upgraded before heading to the IRC :)22:32
freeman__:)22:32
freeman__no clue22:33
freeman__sorry22:33
nstiurcai've been trying to track down why X is trying to start gnome session... i haven't been able to find anything through either grepping around in /etc/X11 or looking at the files referenced in man startx22:34
nstiurcaany ideas where that might be set?22:34
Daskreechnstiurca: prefdm?22:35
nstiurcaDaskreech: not sure what you meant... if that's supposed to be a command, not found22:36
freeman__nstiurca: can you reach .xsession-errors in your home dir?22:36
nstiurcahttp://pastebin.com/L7M5t4p622:37
Daskreechnstiurca: btw you can connect to irc from terminal if you like22:37
nstiurcaDaskreech: I know, I did it before one time when I first got Linux years and years ago and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to uninstall X11... it seemed easier to just log in to my other account for now22:38
Daskreechnstiurca: :) Ok just letting you know that's an option if you like22:39
Daskreechelvenfighter: would you like me to try out with you?22:40
Daskreechnstiurca: can you change your login session?22:41
nstiurcaDaskreech: yes, if I go to the K menu, Leave, Switch User, New Session, I end up at a login screen. The slight difference from what I reported in my first post is that after KDE crashes, instead of ending up at the login screen, I end up in my (locked) session I have running now with my other user account22:45
Daskreechah22:46
nstiurcathe .xsession-errors is the same, except in that case an empty .xsession-errors-:1 is also created22:46
nstiurcaat any rate, I don't think there is anything wrong with my KDE installation at the system level since I can log in as a different user. so I tried deleting (backing up actually) ~/.kde and /var/tmp/kde-<username>, and I still can't log in22:49
nstiurcadoes KDE keep any config files elsewhere which may be causing problems?22:50
nstiurcahmm, renaming my home directory, then creating a fresh, empty home directory allows me to log in, although at the login screen I had to explicitly select KDE as my session to avoid it trying to start a Gnome session22:56
nstiurcaI guess I can start moving things back a piece at a time from my backed up home into my new home22:58
BarkingFishthat's a good idea - just don't copy anything from your old .kde folder on the backup, it may contain the configuration which messed your other set up :)22:59
nstiurcameh.  that means I lose all my KDE settings. also, i tried removing just .kde, which din't help so i think the culprit is elsewhere. still, I will tread carefully23:00
BarkingFishyeah, better to be safe now that you have your sessions working23:01
Daskreechmv ~/.kde ~/.kde_bkup23:08
nstiurcahmm, my .Xauthority in my old home folder is owned by root... wtf? I bet that was it...23:19
Daskreechnstiurca: that would probably help23:20
