DystaNIm using Ubuntu 12.04 and my compiz desktop cube is not working properly00:04
DystaNcan anyone tell me if this is the proper installation method ?00:05
DystaNhttp://pastebin.com/untJ775S00:05
DystaNdo you need emerald to run desktop cube on ubuntu 12.04 ???00:36
DystaNcan someone give me an easy way to remapp my mouse buttons ?00:40
thewrathhello all01:11
thewrathi have a question01:11
thewrathabout apache and name based virtual hosting01:11
aeoril-mobO/01:38
DystaNsomeone help me01:41
DystaNim using ubuntu 12.04 LTS trying to get compiz to work properly01:41
DystaN3D windows are not working and the cube only leaves me with a flat screen that flips01:45
DystaNplus group windows and tabs seems to be defective01:46
holsteinDystaN: i would expect breakage02:03
DystaNbreakage ???02:03
holsteinDystaN: compiz is customized for unity.. if you want desktops on a cube and all that, i would consider 10.0402:03
holsteinOR, try using compiz in XFCE... im just telling you.. at the end of a few days piddling around with getting it all working, im using openbox now02:04
DystaNI had it almost working with 12.0402:04
holsteinDystaN: i had it fully working02:05
DystaNwhy is it 10.04 better :02:05
holsteinDystaN: i didnt say it was better02:05
holsteini implied it would be more appropriate out of the box for the older style of compiz it seems you are looking for02:05
DystaNwell02:06
DystaNI just want the cube to be the cube02:06
DystaNand the plugins to work properly02:06
DystaNlast instalation I had everything working but "group tabs'02:06
holsteinDystaN: sure.. and they are.. they are working the way unity needs them to02:06
holsteinDystaN: you can "undo" that, and get it back to "normal"02:06
DystaNlast time I broke everything down02:07
DystaNand the screen went black02:07
DystaNso I had to reinstall everything02:07
holsteinyup.. i broke it a few times as well02:07
DystaNlemme show you something02:07
holsteini got it working.. and decided it wasnt worth it.. and now im not doing it.. that doesnt mean you shouldnt02:07
holsteinim just saying, it wont be easy, and you should expect breakage02:07
DystaNhttp://www.ubuntudicas.com.br/blog/2012/03/compiz-no-ubuntu-12-04/02:08
DystaNI installed it through terminal02:08
DystaNwould that way be the complete one ?02:08
holsteinit was similar to that when i did it.. i just had to tweak a bunch02:09
DystaNthats the hard part02:10
DystaNim a complete beginner on linux and ubuntu02:10
holsteinyup.. id say, install and enjoy the normal 12.0402:10
holsteinif you want cubes and fire, try the 10.04 CD... you can have that running live with most graphics hardware02:11
DystaNtheres no way to enjoy it02:11
DystaNwithout the cuuube02:11
holsteini manage...02:11
holsteini hear you though... i had a simlar conversation with myself about this over a year ago when i saw everything changing02:12
holsteini just decided to go the other way with it02:12
thewrathhey all02:12
DystaNlol02:12
DystaNhello02:12
thewrathlong time no see holstein02:12
thewrathstlsaint: hey buddy02:12
holsteinits all open, you are free to tweak and do what you like.. you might find an ubuntu derivitive with cubes and fire DystaN02:12
holsteinthewrath: o/02:12
thewrathholstein: i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working is that because i am using name based virtual hosts?02:13
holsteinthewrath: good question... i think thats a good place to start troubleshooting from.. an easier place02:14
holsteinseems plausible02:14
thewraththat is what i figured02:18
thewrathas last night i did not have them02:18
stlsaintthewrath: hey man02:19
thewrathhow has it been?02:19
stlsaintthewrath: chillin man. sup with you?02:19
thewrathi finally installed Ubuntu again in a VM using 12.0402:19
thewrathbusy02:19
thewrathwork has been killer02:19
thewrathlost power for 2.5 days after that huge storm that went from ohio beyond to the east coast02:19
thewrathstlsaint: do you if what i said is possible?>02:20
stlsaintis what possible?02:20
thewrath i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working02:20
thewrath                  is that because i am using name based virtual hosts?02:20
stlsaintthewrath: why is 9000 going to port 80?02:21
thewrathbecause i have port forwarding set up02:22
stlsaintif you are doing virtual hosting than port numbers should notbe changed02:22
thewrathhmm02:22
thewrathi want to run 2 web servers02:22
thewrathlet me remove teh virtual hosting02:22
stlsaintthewrath: naw, you should remove the port forwarding02:23
stlsaintapache works best when hosting off the same machine, IE: both servers run through ubuntu just in different dirs, and you setup apache vhost02:24
thewrathlol02:24
thewrathi am running fedora because of snort02:24
thewrathi use RH at work so fedora is close02:24
stlsaintoh ok, well run servers through fedora02:25
thewrathlol02:26
thewrathbut i get better support in here with ubuntu lol02:26
thewrathi feel bad coming in here and talking about fedora02:26
stlsaintlol02:26
thewrathsuggestions?02:27
msdaisyHello. Does anyone know how to turn off logging in Ubuntu? I'm guessing you have to issue commands for each log, right? (sys, kern, ufw, etc)02:28
thewrathmsdaisy: why would you want to do taht?02:29
msdaisyto learn how to control logging? To screw with my system? Just for fun?02:29
thewrathstlsaint: i forget do you have your own site?02:29
thewrathok02:29
stlsaintmsdaisy: sounds like you ;)02:29
msdaisyindeed.02:30
msdaisylol02:30
stlsaintthewrath: i was running site for church. server is under maintenance right now though02:30
thewrathrunning ubuntu?02:30
stlsaintthewrath: i would suggest running everything via fedora. Scrap ubuntu all together if you are already familiar with RH02:30
stlsaintthewrath: proxmox02:30
stlsaintvps some running fedora, some debian, some ubuntu, some centOS02:31
stlsaintmsdaisy: i actually dont know. I would google it cause ive never turned off logging lol02:31
msdaisyso thewrath, do you have any ideas on how to control the logging levels of various logs?02:31
msdaisymy google fu is totally broken right now. I'm getting no where. :(02:31
stlsaintmsdaisy: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/7574602:32
stlsaintmsdaisy: maybe that can get you started somewhere02:33
msdaisyLOL, I found that thread a little bit ago.  It's kind of it but not really.02:33
msdaisyBut thank you stlsaint02:33
thewrathmsdaisy: no as i will not change02:34
msdaisyWhat if you wanted to change the log levels to verbose?02:35
msdaisyor uber-verbose?02:35
stlsaintmsdaisy: have you glanced at logrotate manual?02:37
msdaisyyeah stlsaint, I *think* if you change the rotation duration to 0 it will not save any old logs.02:39
msdaisyBut it will still log I believe.02:39
stlsaintmsdaisy: we talking ubuntu server or ubuntu in general?02:42
msdaisywell both I guess stlsaint02:42
msdaisybecause I'm certain it's at the command line level.02:42
stlsaintmsdaisy: lol this is more difficult to figure out than i thought02:46
msdaisyI know! It wasn't even my question to begin with, but now it's like a personal thing between me and logging!02:46
stlsaintlol same here02:47
DystaNhow can I remapp my mouse buttons on ubuntu 12.04  LTS ???02:47
msdaisyFrom my crappy google skills I have pieced together that I think you need to issue commands to stop each log individually stlsaint02:47
msdaisyScrew it- I'll just test logrotate and see what it does.  I'll let you know stlsaint02:48
stlsaintDystaN: still do not know from the last time you asked ;)02:48
DystaN:D02:50
nhandlerThere probably isn't a "switch" you can flip to disable logging. Many applications handle it in different ways. Your best bet would be to do something crazy like turning your /var/log directory into a symlink to /dev/null or having it mounted read only. This would most likely prevent logs, but it would also probably cause a LOT of errors to be displayed and many applications to stop working properly03:19
msdaisythanks nhandler03:23
msdaisynhandler,  Ok, so all applications need to write to the logs and they all handle it differently.  Is that what you're saying?03:27
thewrathstlsaint: what is the link for the church website03:39
thewrathwhat software r u using03:39
stlsaintthewrath: right now site is down, its all done by hand, wife does it, no joomla or nothing03:42
stlsaintthewrath: but i use a turnkey linux LAMP template to handle all backend stuff, really nice03:43
stlsaintthewrath: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstackhttp://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack03:44
stlsaintopps double posted link03:44
stlsainthttp://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack03:44
stlsaintout for night, thewrath hit me on email if you have anymore questions03:48
thewrathwhat is turnkeylinux?03:49
msdaisygo to the website he posted ^^03:51
thewrathi realized after i asked03:55
thewrathsilly me that is why i did not follow it up with anything03:55
