DystaN | Im using Ubuntu 12.04 and my compiz desktop cube is not working properly | 00:04 |
---|---|---|
DystaN | can anyone tell me if this is the proper installation method ? | 00:05 |
DystaN | http://pastebin.com/untJ775S | 00:05 |
DystaN | do you need emerald to run desktop cube on ubuntu 12.04 ??? | 00:36 |
DystaN | can someone give me an easy way to remapp my mouse buttons ? | 00:40 |
thewrath | hello all | 01:11 |
thewrath | i have a question | 01:11 |
thewrath | about apache and name based virtual hosting | 01:11 |
aeoril-mob | O/ | 01:38 |
DystaN | someone help me | 01:41 |
DystaN | im using ubuntu 12.04 LTS trying to get compiz to work properly | 01:41 |
DystaN | 3D windows are not working and the cube only leaves me with a flat screen that flips | 01:45 |
DystaN | plus group windows and tabs seems to be defective | 01:46 |
holstein | DystaN: i would expect breakage | 02:03 |
DystaN | breakage ??? | 02:03 |
holstein | DystaN: compiz is customized for unity.. if you want desktops on a cube and all that, i would consider 10.04 | 02:03 |
holstein | OR, try using compiz in XFCE... im just telling you.. at the end of a few days piddling around with getting it all working, im using openbox now | 02:04 |
DystaN | I had it almost working with 12.04 | 02:04 |
holstein | DystaN: i had it fully working | 02:05 |
DystaN | why is it 10.04 better : | 02:05 |
holstein | DystaN: i didnt say it was better | 02:05 |
holstein | i implied it would be more appropriate out of the box for the older style of compiz it seems you are looking for | 02:05 |
DystaN | well | 02:06 |
DystaN | I just want the cube to be the cube | 02:06 |
DystaN | and the plugins to work properly | 02:06 |
DystaN | last instalation I had everything working but "group tabs' | 02:06 |
holstein | DystaN: sure.. and they are.. they are working the way unity needs them to | 02:06 |
holstein | DystaN: you can "undo" that, and get it back to "normal" | 02:06 |
DystaN | last time I broke everything down | 02:07 |
DystaN | and the screen went black | 02:07 |
DystaN | so I had to reinstall everything | 02:07 |
holstein | yup.. i broke it a few times as well | 02:07 |
DystaN | lemme show you something | 02:07 |
holstein | i got it working.. and decided it wasnt worth it.. and now im not doing it.. that doesnt mean you shouldnt | 02:07 |
holstein | im just saying, it wont be easy, and you should expect breakage | 02:07 |
DystaN | http://www.ubuntudicas.com.br/blog/2012/03/compiz-no-ubuntu-12-04/ | 02:08 |
DystaN | I installed it through terminal | 02:08 |
DystaN | would that way be the complete one ? | 02:08 |
holstein | it was similar to that when i did it.. i just had to tweak a bunch | 02:09 |
DystaN | thats the hard part | 02:10 |
DystaN | im a complete beginner on linux and ubuntu | 02:10 |
holstein | yup.. id say, install and enjoy the normal 12.04 | 02:10 |
holstein | if you want cubes and fire, try the 10.04 CD... you can have that running live with most graphics hardware | 02:11 |
DystaN | theres no way to enjoy it | 02:11 |
DystaN | without the cuuube | 02:11 |
holstein | i manage... | 02:11 |
holstein | i hear you though... i had a simlar conversation with myself about this over a year ago when i saw everything changing | 02:12 |
holstein | i just decided to go the other way with it | 02:12 |
thewrath | hey all | 02:12 |
DystaN | lol | 02:12 |
DystaN | hello | 02:12 |
thewrath | long time no see holstein | 02:12 |
thewrath | stlsaint: hey buddy | 02:12 |
holstein | its all open, you are free to tweak and do what you like.. you might find an ubuntu derivitive with cubes and fire DystaN | 02:12 |
holstein | thewrath: o/ | 02:12 |
thewrath | holstein: i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working is that because i am using name based virtual hosts? | 02:13 |
holstein | thewrath: good question... i think thats a good place to start troubleshooting from.. an easier place | 02:14 |
holstein | seems plausible | 02:14 |
thewrath | that is what i figured | 02:18 |
thewrath | as last night i did not have them | 02:18 |
stlsaint | thewrath: hey man | 02:19 |
thewrath | how has it been? | 02:19 |
stlsaint | thewrath: chillin man. sup with you? | 02:19 |
thewrath | i finally installed Ubuntu again in a VM using 12.04 | 02:19 |
thewrath | busy | 02:19 |
thewrath | work has been killer | 02:19 |
thewrath | lost power for 2.5 days after that huge storm that went from ohio beyond to the east coast | 02:19 |
thewrath | stlsaint: do you if what i said is possible?> | 02:20 |
stlsaint | is what possible? | 02:20 |
thewrath | i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working | 02:20 |
thewrath | is that because i am using name based virtual hosts? | 02:20 |
stlsaint | thewrath: why is 9000 going to port 80? | 02:21 |
thewrath | because i have port forwarding set up | 02:22 |
stlsaint | if you are doing virtual hosting than port numbers should notbe changed | 02:22 |
thewrath | hmm | 02:22 |
thewrath | i want to run 2 web servers | 02:22 |
thewrath | let me remove teh virtual hosting | 02:22 |
stlsaint | thewrath: naw, you should remove the port forwarding | 02:23 |
stlsaint | apache works best when hosting off the same machine, IE: both servers run through ubuntu just in different dirs, and you setup apache vhost | 02:24 |
thewrath | lol | 02:24 |
thewrath | i am running fedora because of snort | 02:24 |
thewrath | i use RH at work so fedora is close | 02:24 |
stlsaint | oh ok, well run servers through fedora | 02:25 |
thewrath | lol | 02:26 |
thewrath | but i get better support in here with ubuntu lol | 02:26 |
thewrath | i feel bad coming in here and talking about fedora | 02:26 |
stlsaint | lol | 02:26 |
thewrath | suggestions? | 02:27 |
msdaisy | Hello. Does anyone know how to turn off logging in Ubuntu? I'm guessing you have to issue commands for each log, right? (sys, kern, ufw, etc) | 02:28 |
thewrath | msdaisy: why would you want to do taht? | 02:29 |
msdaisy | to learn how to control logging? To screw with my system? Just for fun? | 02:29 |
thewrath | stlsaint: i forget do you have your own site? | 02:29 |
thewrath | ok | 02:29 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: sounds like you ;) | 02:29 |
msdaisy | indeed. | 02:30 |
msdaisy | lol | 02:30 |
stlsaint | thewrath: i was running site for church. server is under maintenance right now though | 02:30 |
thewrath | running ubuntu? | 02:30 |
stlsaint | thewrath: i would suggest running everything via fedora. Scrap ubuntu all together if you are already familiar with RH | 02:30 |
stlsaint | thewrath: proxmox | 02:30 |
stlsaint | vps some running fedora, some debian, some ubuntu, some centOS | 02:31 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: i actually dont know. I would google it cause ive never turned off logging lol | 02:31 |
msdaisy | so thewrath, do you have any ideas on how to control the logging levels of various logs? | 02:31 |
msdaisy | my google fu is totally broken right now. I'm getting no where. :( | 02:31 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/75746 | 02:32 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: maybe that can get you started somewhere | 02:33 |
msdaisy | LOL, I found that thread a little bit ago. It's kind of it but not really. | 02:33 |
msdaisy | But thank you stlsaint | 02:33 |
thewrath | msdaisy: no as i will not change | 02:34 |
msdaisy | What if you wanted to change the log levels to verbose? | 02:35 |
msdaisy | or uber-verbose? | 02:35 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: have you glanced at logrotate manual? | 02:37 |
msdaisy | yeah stlsaint, I *think* if you change the rotation duration to 0 it will not save any old logs. | 02:39 |
msdaisy | But it will still log I believe. | 02:39 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: we talking ubuntu server or ubuntu in general? | 02:42 |
msdaisy | well both I guess stlsaint | 02:42 |
msdaisy | because I'm certain it's at the command line level. | 02:42 |
stlsaint | msdaisy: lol this is more difficult to figure out than i thought | 02:46 |
msdaisy | I know! It wasn't even my question to begin with, but now it's like a personal thing between me and logging! | 02:46 |
stlsaint | lol same here | 02:47 |
DystaN | how can I remapp my mouse buttons on ubuntu 12.04 LTS ??? | 02:47 |
msdaisy | From my crappy google skills I have pieced together that I think you need to issue commands to stop each log individually stlsaint | 02:47 |
msdaisy | Screw it- I'll just test logrotate and see what it does. I'll let you know stlsaint | 02:48 |
stlsaint | DystaN: still do not know from the last time you asked ;) | 02:48 |
DystaN | :D | 02:50 |
nhandler | There probably isn't a "switch" you can flip to disable logging. Many applications handle it in different ways. Your best bet would be to do something crazy like turning your /var/log directory into a symlink to /dev/null or having it mounted read only. This would most likely prevent logs, but it would also probably cause a LOT of errors to be displayed and many applications to stop working properly | 03:19 |
msdaisy | thanks nhandler | 03:23 |
msdaisy | nhandler, Ok, so all applications need to write to the logs and they all handle it differently. Is that what you're saying? | 03:27 |
thewrath | stlsaint: what is the link for the church website | 03:39 |
thewrath | what software r u using | 03:39 |
stlsaint | thewrath: right now site is down, its all done by hand, wife does it, no joomla or nothing | 03:42 |
stlsaint | thewrath: but i use a turnkey linux LAMP template to handle all backend stuff, really nice | 03:43 |
stlsaint | thewrath: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstackhttp://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack | 03:44 |
stlsaint | opps double posted link | 03:44 |
stlsaint | http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack | 03:44 |
stlsaint | out for night, thewrath hit me on email if you have anymore questions | 03:48 |
thewrath | what is turnkeylinux? | 03:49 |
msdaisy | go to the website he posted ^^ | 03:51 |
thewrath | i realized after i asked | 03:55 |
thewrath | silly me that is why i did not follow it up with anything | 03:55 |
DystaN | has anyone ended up with a flat screen that flips instead of the desktop cube in Ubuntu 12.04 ? | 04:07 |
DystaN | Hello , im new to linux and ubuntu can someone help me remapp my mouse ? Im using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS | 05:14 |

DystaN | hello everyone | 08:29 |
DystaN | is there any program to make remapping mouse buttons easier in Ubuntu 12.04 ??? How about a slide show for wallpapers ???? | 08:31 |
DystaN | does CreBS still work with Ubuntu 12.04 ??? | 08:41 |
krytarik | DystaN, in lack of a quick response here, you might better ask in #ubuntu. | 08:43 |
krytarik | Or research it yourself in the first place, of course. | 08:44 |
DystaN | I find my questions my be 2 stupid for real Ubunturers | 08:51 |
DystaN | *might be | 08:51 |
krytarik | DystaN, as for CreBS, just try it. As for a fancy program for remapping mouse buttons, that's not a stupid question at all. | 08:52 |
DystaN | krytarik I tried installing CreBS , seemed to install ... cannot start it whatsoever | 08:58 |
krytarik | DystaN, do you find its launcher then? | 08:59 |
DystaN | cannot find it | 08:59 |
krytarik | DystaN, what desktop session option are you using then? | 09:01 |
DystaN | Ambience if yo urefer to theme | 09:01 |
krytarik | Nope, I'm meaning Unity, Gnome Classic, Gnome Shell, or something else? | 09:02 |
DystaN | Unity | 09:02 |
krytarik | So you don't find CreBS in the Unity Dash? | 09:03 |
DystaN | no sir | 09:03 |
DystaN | it might be krebs | 09:03 |
krytarik | No, it's really CreBS. | 09:03 |
DystaN | hmmm | 09:03 |
krytarik | How did you install it then? | 09:04 |
DystaN | found a tutorial for making wallpaper slideshows | 09:04 |
krytarik | Link? | 09:04 |
DystaN | gave me 3 lines for terminal so I tried it | 09:05 |
DystaN | http://www.howtogeek.com/?post_type=post&p=25549 | 09:05 |
krytarik | Sec. | 09:06 |
matt_symes | IlikeMoose: try lsusb from the terminal. | 09:06 |
krytarik | DystaN, there are no packages in the CreBS for the latest two Ubuntu versions, incl. Precise 12.04. And the source code hasn't been updated since July 2010 either. | 09:10 |
krytarik | *Crebs PPA | 09:10 |
krytarik | *CreBS PAA - :D | 09:10 |
krytarik | Damn it! :D | 09:11 |
DystaN | damn | 09:11 |
DystaN | what in the name of monkey jesus did I install then ? | 09:11 |
krytarik | Nothing, I reckon. | 09:12 |
DystaN | :D three lines of nuthing | 09:12 |
DystaN | nice | 09:12 |
krytarik | It's not in the official repos of any Ubuntu version either, I should mention. | 09:13 |
krytarik | DystaN, try searching for an alternative, I think there is one. | 09:15 |
DystaN | krytarik foudn Wallich :D thanx Krytarik | 09:24 |
krytarik | You're welcome. :) | 09:25 |
DystaN | Using SKype , Ubuntu 12.04 , where do you Resize the Font of Chat Window ???? | 10:19 |
* krytarik is not using Skype. | 10:20 | |
geirha | You should avoid the extraneous question marks. One is enough. | 10:20 |
krytarik | +1 | 10:21 |
DystaN | geirha lol | 10:21 |
Boogeyman | for remapping mouse buttons, i recommend btnx | 10:29 |
Boogeyman | thats what i used in 11.04 | 10:29 |
stlsaint | thewrath: i was saying if you had any questions shoot me an email | 12:46 |
raubvogel | Does anyone have an example of an iptable egress rule (allow to, say, connect to www.server.com:80 from a LAN) for a firewall? | 15:20 |
escott | raubvogel, don't know if you have looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo | 15:35 |
raubvogel | escott: I need something a bit more complex | 15:36 |
raubvogel | But thanks | 15:36 |
