[00:04] Im using Ubuntu 12.04 and my compiz desktop cube is not working properly [00:05] can anyone tell me if this is the proper installation method ? [00:05] http://pastebin.com/untJ775S [00:36] do you need emerald to run desktop cube on ubuntu 12.04 ??? [00:40] can someone give me an easy way to remapp my mouse buttons ? [01:11] hello all [01:11] i have a question [01:11] about apache and name based virtual hosting [01:38] O/ [01:41] someone help me [01:41] im using ubuntu 12.04 LTS trying to get compiz to work properly [01:45] 3D windows are not working and the cube only leaves me with a flat screen that flips [01:46] plus group windows and tabs seems to be defective [02:03] DystaN: i would expect breakage [02:03] breakage ??? [02:03] DystaN: compiz is customized for unity.. if you want desktops on a cube and all that, i would consider 10.04 [02:04] OR, try using compiz in XFCE... im just telling you.. at the end of a few days piddling around with getting it all working, im using openbox now [02:04] I had it almost working with 12.04 [02:05] DystaN: i had it fully working [02:05] why is it 10.04 better : [02:05] DystaN: i didnt say it was better [02:05] i implied it would be more appropriate out of the box for the older style of compiz it seems you are looking for [02:06] well [02:06] I just want the cube to be the cube [02:06] and the plugins to work properly [02:06] last instalation I had everything working but "group tabs' [02:06] DystaN: sure.. and they are.. they are working the way unity needs them to [02:06] DystaN: you can "undo" that, and get it back to "normal" [02:07] last time I broke everything down [02:07] and the screen went black [02:07] so I had to reinstall everything [02:07] yup.. i broke it a few times as well [02:07] lemme show you something [02:07] i got it working.. and decided it wasnt worth it.. and now im not doing it.. that doesnt mean you shouldnt [02:07] im just saying, it wont be easy, and you should expect breakage [02:08] http://www.ubuntudicas.com.br/blog/2012/03/compiz-no-ubuntu-12-04/ [02:08] I installed it through terminal [02:08] would that way be the complete one ? [02:09] it was similar to that when i did it.. i just had to tweak a bunch [02:10] thats the hard part [02:10] im a complete beginner on linux and ubuntu [02:10] yup.. id say, install and enjoy the normal 12.04 [02:11] if you want cubes and fire, try the 10.04 CD... you can have that running live with most graphics hardware [02:11] theres no way to enjoy it [02:11] without the cuuube [02:11] i manage... [02:12] i hear you though... i had a simlar conversation with myself about this over a year ago when i saw everything changing [02:12] i just decided to go the other way with it [02:12] hey all [02:12] lol [02:12] hello [02:12] long time no see holstein [02:12] stlsaint: hey buddy [02:12] its all open, you are free to tweak and do what you like.. you might find an ubuntu derivitive with cubes and fire DystaN [02:12] thewrath: o/ [02:13] holstein: i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working is that because i am using name based virtual hosts? [02:14] thewrath: good question... i think thats a good place to start troubleshooting from.. an easier place [02:14] seems plausible [02:18] that is what i figured [02:18] as last night i did not have them [02:19] thewrath: hey man [02:19] how has it been? [02:19] thewrath: chillin man. sup with you? [02:19] i finally installed Ubuntu again in a VM using 12.04 [02:19] busy [02:19] work has been killer [02:19] lost power for 2.5 days after that huge storm that went from ohio beyond to the east coast [02:20] stlsaint: do you if what i said is possible?> [02:20] is what possible? [02:20] i am using ubuntu for a web server and fedora for another. i have port 9000 external going to the ubuntu:80. it is not working [02:20] is that because i am using name based virtual hosts? [02:21] thewrath: why is 9000 going to port 80? [02:22] because i have port forwarding set up [02:22] if you are doing virtual hosting than port numbers should notbe changed [02:22] hmm [02:22] i want to run 2 web servers [02:22] let me remove teh virtual hosting [02:23] thewrath: naw, you should remove the port forwarding [02:24] apache works best when hosting off the same machine, IE: both servers run through ubuntu just in different dirs, and you setup apache vhost [02:24] lol [02:24] i am running fedora because of snort [02:24] i use RH at work so fedora is close [02:25] oh ok, well run servers through fedora [02:26] lol [02:26] but i get better support in here with ubuntu lol [02:26] i feel bad coming in here and talking about fedora [02:26] lol [02:27] suggestions? [02:28] Hello. Does anyone know how to turn off logging in Ubuntu? I'm guessing you have to issue commands for each log, right? (sys, kern, ufw, etc) [02:29] msdaisy: why would you want to do taht? [02:29] to learn how to control logging? To screw with my system? Just for fun? [02:29] stlsaint: i forget do you have your own site? [02:29] ok [02:29] msdaisy: sounds like you ;) [02:30] indeed. [02:30] lol [02:30] thewrath: i was running site for church. server is under maintenance right now though [02:30] running ubuntu? [02:30] thewrath: i would suggest running everything via fedora. Scrap ubuntu all together if you are already familiar with RH [02:30] thewrath: proxmox [02:31] vps some running fedora, some debian, some ubuntu, some centOS [02:31] msdaisy: i actually dont know. I would google it cause ive never turned off logging lol [02:31] so thewrath, do you have any ideas on how to control the logging levels of various logs? [02:31] my google fu is totally broken right now. I'm getting no where. :( [02:32] msdaisy: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/75746 [02:33] msdaisy: maybe that can get you started somewhere [02:33] LOL, I found that thread a little bit ago. It's kind of it but not really. [02:33] But thank you stlsaint [02:34] msdaisy: no as i will not change [02:35] What if you wanted to change the log levels to verbose? [02:35] or uber-verbose? [02:37] msdaisy: have you glanced at logrotate manual? [02:39] yeah stlsaint, I *think* if you change the rotation duration to 0 it will not save any old logs. [02:39] But it will still log I believe. [02:42] msdaisy: we talking ubuntu server or ubuntu in general? [02:42] well both I guess stlsaint [02:42] because I'm certain it's at the command line level. [02:46] msdaisy: lol this is more difficult to figure out than i thought [02:46] I know! It wasn't even my question to begin with, but now it's like a personal thing between me and logging! [02:47] lol same here [02:47] how can I remapp my mouse buttons on ubuntu 12.04 LTS ??? [02:47] From my crappy google skills I have pieced together that I think you need to issue commands to stop each log individually stlsaint [02:48] Screw it- I'll just test logrotate and see what it does. I'll let you know stlsaint [02:48] DystaN: still do not know from the last time you asked ;) [02:50] :D [03:19] There probably isn't a "switch" you can flip to disable logging. Many applications handle it in different ways. Your best bet would be to do something crazy like turning your /var/log directory into a symlink to /dev/null or having it mounted read only. This would most likely prevent logs, but it would also probably cause a LOT of errors to be displayed and many applications to stop working properly [03:23] thanks nhandler [03:27] nhandler, Ok, so all applications need to write to the logs and they all handle it differently. Is that what you're saying? [03:39] stlsaint: what is the link for the church website [03:39] what software r u using [03:42] thewrath: right now site is down, its all done by hand, wife does it, no joomla or nothing [03:43] thewrath: but i use a turnkey linux LAMP template to handle all backend stuff, really nice [03:44] thewrath: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstackhttp://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack [03:44] opps double posted link [03:44] http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack [03:48] out for night, thewrath hit me on email if you have anymore questions [03:49] what is turnkeylinux? [03:51] go to the website he posted ^^ [03:55] i realized after i asked [03:55] silly me that is why i did not follow it up with anything [04:07] has anyone ended up with a flat screen that flips instead of the desktop cube in Ubuntu 12.04 ? [05:14] Hello , im new to linux and ubuntu can someone help me remapp my mouse ? Im using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS === rastamouse is now known as nothingspecial [06:03] stupid question... how do I easily download the whole folder "meetbot" from here - http://anonscm.debian.org/darcs/collab-maint/ [06:03] * not_found fails at basics [06:09] * not_found finds out about darcs [06:12] Why not try meetingology? [08:41] does CreBS still work with Ubuntu 12.04 ??? [08:43] DystaN, in lack of a quick response here, you might better ask in #ubuntu. [08:44] Or research it yourself in the first place, of course. [08:51] I find my questions my be 2 stupid for real Ubunturers [08:51] *might be [08:52] DystaN, as for CreBS, just try it. As for a fancy program for remapping mouse buttons, that's not a stupid question at all. [08:58] krytarik I tried installing CreBS , seemed to install ... cannot start it whatsoever [08:59] DystaN, do you find its launcher then? [08:59] cannot find it [09:01] DystaN, what desktop session option are you using then? [09:01] Ambience if yo urefer to theme [09:02] Nope, I'm meaning Unity, Gnome Classic, Gnome Shell, or something else? [09:02] Unity [09:03] So you don't find CreBS in the Unity Dash? [09:05] gave me 3 lines for terminal so I tried it [09:05] http://www.howtogeek.com/?post_type=post&p=25549 [09:06] Sec. [09:06] IlikeMoose: try lsusb from the terminal. [09:10] DystaN, there are no packages in the CreBS for the latest two Ubuntu versions, incl. Precise 12.04. And the source code hasn't been updated since July 2010 either. [09:10] *Crebs PPA [09:10] *CreBS PAA - :D [09:11] Damn it! :D [09:11] damn [09:11] what in the name of monkey jesus did I install then ? [09:12] Nothing, I reckon. [09:12] :D three lines of nuthing [09:12] nice [09:13] It's not in the official repos of any Ubuntu version either, I should mention. [09:15] DystaN, try searching for an alternative, I think there is one. [09:24] krytarik foudn Wallich :D thanx Krytarik [09:25] You're welcome. :) [10:19] Using SKype , Ubuntu 12.04 , where do you Resize the Font of Chat Window ???? [10:20] * krytarik is not using Skype. [10:20] You should avoid the extraneous question marks. One is enough. [10:21] +1 [10:21] geirha lol [10:29] for remapping mouse buttons, i recommend btnx [10:29] thats what i used in 11.04 [12:46] thewrath: i was saying if you had any questions shoot me an email [15:20] Does anyone have an example of an iptable egress rule (allow to, say, connect to www.server.com:80 from a LAN) for a firewall?
