=== Derek____ is now known as Strategist
jonn10cI am having trouble installing ubuntu. I want to dual boot with windows 7. Whenever i partitioned up my hard drive the free space became unusable.02:16
Strategistjonn10c: You don't need to partition it.02:18
StrategistUbuntu will do that for you when you get ready to install.02:18
StrategistIt would be best for you to delete the partition you made for it, then just use the Ubuntu installer that's on the live cd.02:19
StrategistIt will let you divide the harddrive up however you like during the install process.02:19
StrategistGiving you more room for Win7 or more for Ubuntu etc.02:19
jonn10cmore room for ubuntu02:20
jonn10cim using the live cd on a usb drive and this happened when i was in the installation process02:20
jonn10cwhen i partitioned what i think was my C drive on windows to free up space, it left me with a lot of free space that i am not able to access for ubuntu02:21
jonn10calso this is my first time on IRC02:22
jonn10cIt wont let me delete the partition. the only option available is 'revert' im not sure what that does02:27
Strategistjonn10c: What program did you use to partition the harddrive?02:37
jonn10cjust the usb live cd.02:39
jonn10cwhere do i go to find out which program it uses?02:40
Strategistjonn10c: I use the free version of Easeus Partition Manager.  It's really good, and you can use it in Windows 7.  Download that, and you can fix your partitions usually just by right clicking on them and reading the options.02:40
StrategistDelete the parition you made, and merge the free space back with your Windows7 partition.02:41
StrategistThen proceed with installing Ubuntu.02:41
StrategistIt will let you choose how much space to give to each operating systems.02:41
jonn10cthanks! i will try that02:41
StrategistNo problem :)02:41
Strategisthttp://www.filehippo.com/download_easeus_partition_master_home/02:42
jonn10cso i should get out of ubuntu? because im in the live right now02:43
StrategistI'd recommend so, yes.  Don't install anything yet.  Go and fix the partitions.02:44
StrategistOnce you have your partitions straight, then you can install it.02:44
StrategistJust delete the parition you made, and merge the empty space back with Windows702:45
jonn10ccan you tell me what revert does?02:45
StrategistThen when you have all the space back, you can run the Live cd and install Ubuntu.02:45
StrategistNot 100% sure myself, so don't want to be telling you wrong.02:45
jonn10cok thankyou. so download Easeus, get out of ubuntu. then fix partitions. then try again?02:47
StrategistNo problem :)02:48
StrategistChange the order up a bit lol02:48
Strategist1. Get out of the Live cd02:48
Strategist2. Login to Windows and download the Easeus Partition Manager02:48
Strategist3. Fix partitions02:48
Strategist4. Install Ubuntu02:49
Strategist5. Enjoy Linux! ;)02:49
jonn10cok i guess that means i have to leave this. thanks for the help!02:49
StrategistOh, one more thing..02:49
jonn10cwhats that?02:49
StrategistKeep in mind, when you get ready to install Ubuntu, when the partitions come up the largest partition is the Windows one, and the smaller one is where Ubuntu will be installed to.02:50
StrategistHere, this pic will help you understand what I mean...02:50
Strategisthttp://www.techotopia.com/images/2/29/Ubuntu_10.10_dual_boot_disk_space.jpg02:50
jonn10cok. so any ideas on how to keep this from happening again? i read about computers not being able to have more that 4 partitions02:51
StrategistNot 100% sure about that.  I only have two partitions installed.02:52
StrategistHow many do you have already?02:52
jonn10cbefore i started this there was a sda1 sda2 sda3 and sda4. all are ntsf except 4 whish is fat3202:53
StrategistHmm, I don't really have alot of experience with working with more than 3 partitions, so I wouldn't be able to tell you anything concerning that for sure in good faith.02:56
StrategistBut I don't see why it wouldn't work.02:56
jonn10calright thank you again.02:58
StrategistNo problem :)02:59
StrategistGood luck :)02:59
